/rəˈzilyəns/
the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
We returned to the North River School building in September for the first
time in nearly 6 months, armed with an entirely new set of guidelines and
protocols to follow. The excitement of seeing friends, teachers, and others
we had only seen on Zoom was overshadowed by the restrictions we were
forced to follow to maintain safety. Every single day was a challenge.
As the days and weeks passed, we got more comfortable with the different
restrictions we were now living with. Just about the time we thought things
were going smoothly, we’d find out someone had to quarantine and we had
to shift our plans, change the way we attended class, and remember that it
was just a temporary situation.
Regardless of the challenge, we, as a school, have shown incredible
resilience. We have bounced back from not only last year’s school closure,
but also all of the other obstacles we’ve faced this year as we navigated
through ever-changing guidance and restrictions for schools. While the past
year has not been what anyone would consider a “normal” school year, it
showed us, better than ever, that we are not a “normal” group of
individuals. What it showed us was that we are an extraordinary group of
students wanting to learn and teachers wanting to teach. We have shown
creativity and ingenuity in our problem solving and we have come through
this year and this experience as stronger and more determined individuals.
We are not certain what next year will look like but I am confident that
whatever it brings, North River School will be ready to tackle any of the
challenges that come along with it. We are stronger for what we’ve
accomplished and more appreciative of each other. Despite it being a tough
year on so many levels, it has also been one of the best for individual
growth and determination. I am confident that the lessons we’ve learned
over the past year will serve all of us well in the years to come.
While this school year could have been a completely different experience, I
am grateful for the support everyone has provided to make it a great year
for all of us. I look forward to reflecting on this past year with the positive
memories of a time when we realized just what we were all capable of
2 when given the chance to excel.
Wishing you a happy, safe, relaxing, and well-deserved summer!
PHIL 1B9U8N9C.-KRL2.SE0.Y21
He’s the first person every student sees upon arriving each morning at
North River School. Phil Buckley is oftentimes the first person many of
us talk to each day. The welcoming and easy way he greets us and says
hello sets the tone for the day.
For 32 years, Phil has been a fiber of our school, always the first to
arrive, responding to any need - great or small - from student, staff, or
parent. He willingly rises to any occasion, even when it is something as
unpleasant as fixing a clogged toilet. Phil consistently delivers his very
best - be it writing a letter on behalf of a student, contributing to a lively
classroom debate, or simply letting someone know he is there to support
them.
His quiet demeanor and dry sense of humor are often exactly what is
needed to defuse a sticky situation. His immense intelligence is second
to none and his vast array of interests appeal to a large audience. Phil
will be missed by the many who have passed through North River
School, but hopefully, he knows just how much his time here has
influenced us all.
Wishing you a wonderful retirement!
