PawPADS Youth Service Project
Have a love for animals and want to make a difference? Spend a few hours getting your
hands a little dirty and maybe receive a few licks along the way. Lakeville Area Community
Education offers a special Youth Service Project each season during the school year. The
first service project this 2016-2017 school year will give ISD194 middle school students a
very unique opportunity to help out at Pawsitive Perspectives Assistance Dogs (PawPADs),
a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization headquartered in Lakeville. The mission of PawPADS
is to “enrich the lives of people with disabilities by providing them with exceptionally skilled
assistance dogs....” PawPAD’s primary focus is on training service dogs for people with physical mobility disabilities.
Their dogs can also be trained as Diabetic Alert dogs (trained for detecting changes
in blood sugar levels), Autism Support Dogs, Home Help-mate Dogs, and Facility/
Animal Assisted Therapy dogs
on a case-by-case basis.
Volunteers will be helping with many tasks which will help this
amazing organization operate throughout the year. Volunteers
will be working around dogs, but not directly with the dogs.
Transportation to and from MMS will be provided. CMS and
KTMS students can take the activity bus to MMS to participate
in this trip, or parents can drop them off at MMS at 3:10 pm.

Early Childhood Family Education
ECFE Welcome to ECFE
Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a Lakeville Area School District Community Education program that
strengthens families with young children through education and support.
The components of most classes are:
1. Growing Together: For You and Your Child
The first half of each class is devoted to activities planned by a
licensed early childhood teacher for parents and children to explore
together. Together you can enjoy learning through art, music, stories
and a variety of developmental activities. It is an opportunity to
learn new ideas, games and activities that you can do at home.
2. Growing Independently: For Your Child
The remaining portion of each class is for children to have fun
learning through play using art, movement, games and stories with
the early childhood teacher, the classroom assistant and the other
children. New friendships are formed and children discover new
aspects of “me” while they learn apart from you. The goal of the
children’s program is to develop a healthy self-concept and a joy of
learning.
3. Growing Confidently: For You
While children take part in the children’s program, parents join with
other parents in an informal group setting for discussion time led by
a licensed parent educator. The challenges of being a parent are enjoyable, complex, and at times, stressful. Parents
have the opportunity to choose and discuss current family topics, share ideas and concerns and feel encouraged by
the support of others.

Early Childhood Family Education
Sept. 2016-17 School Year
Stepping Stones - transition to preschool
Preschool ages 3 & 4 years
Welcome to your child’s first preschool experience!
This class combines the best of both worlds: Traditional ECFE and Preschool.
Tuesday afternoons are a typical ECFE class. During parent/child interaction
time, the early childhood teacher will set up fun activities that encourage
emerging literacy and mathematical thinking skills. Parents will meet with a
parent educator and other families to discuss a variety of topics that relate to
parenting a preschooler. Parents meet with the early childhood teacher twice a
year to evaluate your child’s progress.
Thursdays you will drop your child off for their preschool experience.
Children will practice social skills by sharing, taking turns, using manners,
pretending, following directions and listening…all in a play-based
environment.
Not potty trained? No worries. Children are not required to be potty
trained to attend this class.

Early Childhood Family Education
ECFE Advisory Council
By Melissa Lockman, Advisory Council Chair
Welcome to Early Childhood Family Education
(ECFE)! The Lakeville Community Education
Department offers this incredible program to
families with children ages birth to five. There are
a variety of classes offered that focus on valuable
parent-child interactions, structured classroom
learning through play, and small group parent
education.
I first learned of ECFE when I was looking for
something to do with my sixth month old. At
the time, I was not aware how greatly the classes,
teachers and new friendships would impact my life
for the better.
The amazing teachers and staff share their energy
and knowledge to create a welcoming environment
for you and your child to learn and grow together. I The Lockman family
