Higher Studies – University of Sri Jayewardenepura / CIMA
Job – Accountant – IFS R&D International (Pvt) Ltd
Hobby – Netflix / Reading / Gardening / cooking

Daughter – Mikaela Muthuthanthri (2 years old)

Let us know what makes you become a Leo and how did your Leo journey
start?

It was all started because of my father. He is a member of the lions’ club of Piliyana-
dala. So, I ended up as one of the charter members of Leo club of Piliyandala
when they inaugurated the club in 2003 when I was in Grade 8. Initially it was
all about meeting different people and networking. Because at that time we did
not have face book or any other social networks. So, this was the only opportuni-
ty to go out and meet friends and to organized service projects and to have some
fun actually.

Things you achieved in life during the Leo
Journey?

Well I think its courage to speak in front of peo-
ple (Public Speaking) I was a very introvert so
becoming a Leo change the way I talk to peo-
ple and it was a good platform to associate
different sort of people where you need that
experience and exposure especially when you
are working for a company and to associate
with the people surrounded by you.

Importance of good
health for youth

Health living is an essential component By: Leo Vinoma Caldera

living and breathing. Making good decision
on what you eat, drink and how often you
exercise and whether you wear your seatbelt
when you drive ultimately affects your
health living bubble. Healthy living is a very
broad category, and there are a ton of things
that fall under it. It is important that youth
understand what healthy living is all about
so that they get into a habit of making sound
decision when it comes to choices surround-
ing health living.

The top killers of young adults are road acci-
dents, unintentional injury, homicide and
suicide. Cancer and heart disease are un-
common for teenagers, but can affects at
this young age. Unplanned pregnancy and
sexually transmitted infections can also
harm young peoples’ health. They can also
cause social and personal problems.

Young people should be mindful about what
they put into and how they treat their bod-
ies. we should educate ourselves on what
food are good for us and which ones are
harmful. As an active youngest we should
start cooking at home sourcing organic pro-
duce from a farmers’ market, get outside
more, watch less television, limit social me-
dia, learn to manage stress and be mindful
about our bodies. As a Leo if we stay healthy
we can serve more to society.

The United Nations’ (UN) International Youth

Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to rec-
ognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing
global society. It also aims to promote ways to
engage them in becoming more actively involved
in making positive contributions to their commu-
nities.

Many activities and events that take place
around the world on International Youth Day
promote the benefits that young people bring into
the world. Many countries participate in this
global event, which may include youth confer-
ences on issues such as education and employ-
ment. Other activities include concerts promoting
the world’s youth, as well as various sporting
events, parades and mobile exhibitions that
showcase young people’s achievements.

The UN defines the worlds’ youth as
the age group between 15 and 24
years old, making up one-sixth of
the human population. Many of
these young men and women live in
developing countries and their num-
bers are expected to rise steeply.

INSPIRE ISSUE 02 LEO CLUB OF PILIYANDALA 20

The idea for International
Youth Day was proposed in
1991 by young people who were
gathered in Vienna, Austria, for
the first session of the UN’s
World Youth Forum. The forum
recommended that an Interna-
tional Youth Day be declared,
especially for fundraising and
promotional purposes, to sup-
port the United Nations Youth
Fund in partnership with youth
organizations.

The theme of International
Youth Day 2020, “Youth En-
gagement for Global Action”
seeks to highlight the ways in
which the engagement of young
people at the local, national
and global levels is enriching
national and multilateral insti-
tutions and processes, as well
as draw lessons on how their
representation and engagement
in formal institutional politics
can be significantly enhanced.
