• This question paper has two parts, Part-A (multiple choice) and Part-B (descriptive).
• You have a max of 45 minutes to answer questions in Part A & B.
• Please do not make any markings on the question papers. Use the answer sheets for all your workings
and your responses.
• There are 40 problems in Part-A. Correct answer will get 3 points and wrong answer will get -1 point.
You have to answer at most 20 questions of your choice. You may answer any 20 of the 40 problems.
• You may answer more than 20 questions. However, only your best 20 questions will receive a score.
• There are 8 problems of which you must answer 2 in Part-B. Only your first two problems will be graded.
You must show your work to receive credit.
• Make and necessary assumptions wherever required. Please don’t ask for any clarifications on questions.
• Write your name, FAN and question numbers clearly on your answer sheet.

1. A vendor has 6 different boxes which weigh 8, 16, 12, 20, 10 and 18 kg and cost Rs. 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and
60 respectively. As a business (wo)man, you always try to get more quantity in all deals that you finalize.
What will your purchase plan be if you have a capital outlay of Rs.190.
2. A miner is trapped in a mine containing three doors. The first door leads to a tunnel that takes him out
to the surface after two hours of travel. The second door leads to a tunnel that returns him to the mine
after three hours of travel. The third door leads to a tunnel that also returns him to his mine after three
hours. Assuming that the miner is at all times equally likely to choose any one of the doors, (irrespective
of previous choices) what is probability that he will reach to the surface within 24 hours?
3. It is drizzling outside and you have to carry a cardboard box over a certain distance without cover or
umbrella etc. You can either walk slow to avoid the rain hitting the box from the front, or run fast to
spend least time in the rain. Which strategy out of these two will you choose to protect the box from
getting wet. Is there an optimum speed that you should go at?
4. Does eating fat make you fat? Justify your answer.
5. Munna Bhai is playing carrom, and wants to pocket the queen. The position of queen (φ = 2, mass=m),
cover (φ = 2, mass=m) and the hole for pocketing (φ = 2 + δ) is shown in the diagram below. The striker
(φ = 3, mass=2m) has to be put on the line A-B, without moving the cover. Choose the position of the
striker, and determine the velocity vector with which Munna has to release the striker to pocket the queen
in the hole.
6. Explain why black coloured dress is not preferred in summer season in plains.

7. Two balls are thrown simultaneously from a same point. One is thrown vertical, and other at an angle of
θ to the vertical. Initial velocity of the bodies is v. Neglecting the air drag, and assuming gravity due to
acceleration = g, find the distance between the bodies at time t.
8. Write a pseudo-algorithm to sort 5 numbers. Give output of each step of your algorithm. Please assume
any non-negative integers.
