Honouray Banquet 2b

Honouray Banquet 2b

St. John’s Anglican Church In Celebrating 250th Years

Message By The Bishop

I take great pleasure in greeting Father Julian Campbell, Priest-in-Charge, the Catechists, Wardens,
Vestry and people of St. John‟s Parish, Harbour
Island/North Eleuthera, as you celebrate the
250th Anniversary of the Parish.

This is a tremendous anniversary that ought to
be celebrated with pride and jubilation as St.
John‟s Parish is the third oldest Parish in the
Diocese, having been established in 1768
following St. Anne‟s Parish, New Providence,
that was established in 1750, and Christ Church
Parish which was established as a
congregation in 1670 but given parish status in
1734. Your Parish has witnessed almost the
entire span of Anglican history in these
islands.

The Church has not only stood as a testament
to the power of the Gospel but also as a
monument to the strength of Anglican
influence. In every generation, it has been a
focal point of worship, bible teaching, moral
direction and community fellowship.

As we thank God for all of the above, we
commit ourselves to the ongoing work of
ministry. We pray that we would be as faithful
as the men, women, boys and girls of times
past, and that we would allow the Gospel to
transform our lives and our world forever.

My wife, Joann, and I are delighted to share
this Banquet Event and to spend the entire
weekend with you. We look forward to being with you on 10th June for the Special Anniversary Service,
which concludes your celebration.

Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev‟d. Laish Boyd

BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF THE BAHAMAS
AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

St John‟s Parish celebrates 250 years= It is a time when the parish looks back and give
the Creator gratitude for these many years of service to His people. Indeed, we are
following in the steps of all past priests and lay people. They have given gallant service

for the Lord. However, we must not stop at nostalgia but pick up the baton and
continue to build on the goodly heritage. We must always seek new and creative ways

of doing ministry.
At this time we give God thanks for all those persons currently being honoured. In
their generation, they too have built upon the foundation of their ancestors. You are a
toast to this parish and the wider community of St. John for the sterling commitment

to the church and community.
Not only do we have homegrown honorees but there are honorees who have graced
our presence for many years from afar. They too have given their time, talent and
treasure for the work of the Lord. Truly, you are now bona fide family members of this

parish.
Congratulations to all of you and may the Lord grant you continued strength in His

vineyard.
Blessings,
Fr. E. Julian Campbell
Priest-in-Charge
St. John‟s Parish

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY UNDER THE STARS

FAITHFUL EAGLES

MRS. LOLA VERNA SAWYER-MAJOR-
SAUNDERS

Lola Verna Sawyer-Major-Saunders was born, March 14th 1932 to the parents of
Gladys and Henry Sawyer in Harbour Island, Bahamas.
“Miss Lola” as she is affectionally called was educated at the Harbour Island Public School.
She was such good student that she was asked to be a class Monitor. She was later sent to Nassau to
sharpen her skills. Upon her return she continued to work for the school but the pay was so little she
could not even buy a pair of shoes. As a result, she decided to work for Pink Sands Hotel as a waitress
and later worked as a seamstress.
There was a time when the Church had to raise money for the Parish Hall. Lola was on the fundraising
committee and there was an American priest named Father Rolle serving the parish. Father Rolle would
send envelopes around the island for guests to make a donation. One night there was a play for the
Parish Hall and Lola sang a song, “I ain‟t got nobody and nobody cares for me. I sing love songs; won‟t
somebody dance with me.” Her singing was so captivating that it brought in a lot of money for the
Parish Hall.

Miss Lola was a member of the ACW, a Sunday School Teacher. She was on the Church Fundraising
Committees and she cleaned the Church. Her hobbies are sewing but due to eye sight deterioration she
no longer sews.

Miss Lola is married to the handsome Joseph Saunders Sr. This union produced 3 Daughters: Jilly,
Eartha and Cora. 5 Sons: Mark, Quinth, Joseph “Rocky” Harry and Oliver of London, England and
numerous Grandchildren.
Lola is now a sick and housebound member. However, she is still a faithful and supportive member of
her church. She loves visits from the priest-in-charge whom she loves a lot.

She is a Believer of Psalm 1: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take, or sits in the company of mockers,” and Psalm 23: “The LORD is my
shepherd; I shall not want.”

To God be the Glory, great things He has done.

MRS. ROSALIE BARRY STEWART

Rosalie Stewart was born on Harbour Island, into the Anglican Church at St. John‟s Parish in
North Eleuthera. I went to school on Harbour Island and later went to Nassau with my uncle
and his wife. I attended school St. Agnes Anglican Church, Grant‟s Town, Nassau for a while
and further studied St. Barnabas.
I returned to Harbour Island in 1949, where I married the love of my life in 1952. The wedding
was performed by Father D. Lamber. I love my church and I truly enjoy being a part of this
great parish.
In 1957 I took care of a priest from England and in 1960 I was honoured to have assisted
Reverend Canon Irvin Johnson, Father Lightbourne, Father Roberts and Father Samuel
Sturrup and Archdeacon Murillo Bonaby who at one time or another were priests of this
parish.
I was the first A.C.W. President, representing the chair I travelled to Grand Bahama and Abaco.
In 1967 I became the church organist and continued playing until early 2000.
I have served as a vestry member and on various boards in my beloved church.

MRS. SHEILA FRANCIS

Sheila, was born on August 9th, 1939, to the proud parents of Mr. Hartman Saunders & Ms.
Mary Johnson (Who were lifelong member of St. John‟s Anglican Church).
After being educated on the island, Sheila moved to Nassau in the early 1950's to pursue
work. It was at that time that she met and married the handsome Mr. Wendell Eugene
Franklin Francis, now deceased. Their union was blessed with 7 beautiful children.

While living in Nassau, she was a member of and faithfully attended St. Matthew‟s
Anglican Church. She was a part of The Good Shepherd Ladies Ministry. They were
responsible for the undertaking of many of the Church's calendar events, which included
cleaning of the church and food preparation for the Annual Bazaar.

Sheila returned home in the early 1980's and continued the nurturing of her faith at the St.
John‟s Anglican Church, where it all began for her. Until this day, she is a devout and
dedicated member of the Parish. Always volunteering when asked upon for support,
especially when it comes to food preparation for the annual Church Thanksgiving Day

BLESSINGS

MRS. ROSETTA HUDSON

A Native of Bluff, Eleuthera
A Mother of 4 (1 deceased)
Wife of the late Bert Hudson
Former Librarian1977-2010

I thank the Almighty God for bringing me this far. It is only by faith that I stand here
today. I have exemplified with it means to be a community-minded individual,

representing The Bluff as a Local Government Councillor for 3 terms; a total of 9
years.

Interest is what I have shown in my community and trust played a pivotal role. I had
the honour of being a part of the Social Advisory Committee for the Department of

Social Services for 14 years.

Being a go-getter is what I love to do; I love blessing others and it is shown in my
day-to-day operations as a business owner. I have been an entrepreneur for many

years.

In addition, I have also shown that I am a proud and true Anglican, for all of my days.
Offering service to the St. Paul’s Anglican Church, The Bluff, is what I loved to do,
especially serving on the Vestry.

I also served in the capacity of President for the A.C.W, for 13 years and for this, I say
to God be the Glory, great things he has done.

her husband took Eleanor to Nassau as their daughter where they
moulded her into the young woman she is today. They always reminded
her that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. May the souls of these
beautiful people in the name of Edward and Francine Butler rest in
eternal peace.

Sixty attended St. Frances Xaviers School, Aquinas College, Miami Dade
Junior College and returned to Nassau where she attended St. Agnes
Church. She was confirmed and received her first holy communion there
under the leadership of Canon Cooper, the rector at that time.

Sixty has always been community-minded and wanted the best for the
youth of the island, so she took part in Brownies, Gril Guide, Rangers, the
Youth Group at the church. She was also a part of the Sunday School
Program.

Upon returning home to Harbour Island after the death of her adopted
mother in 1969, she joined the employment field of Harbour Island. The
Dunmore Beach Club was one of her first jobs and later she moved on to
building a career with the telephone company Batelco ( as it was called)
for 36 years.) There is a time and a season for everything and as the season
of retiring drew near, Sixty closed that chapter of her life at Batelco and
retired in 2001 as Senior Supervisor of the Front Desk Office.

Eleanor is a faithful and dedicated member of the St. John‟s Anglican
Church on Harbour Island and it is here where she worships and is a
member of the ACW where she once served as president. There is nothing
that she would not do for her church from cleaning and preparing church
for Sunday morning service to singing in the choir.

Eleanor is the proud mother of five (5) children: Adrianna Sweeting,
Janeen Mather, Kavaughn Cleare, Nicoya Mather and Dwayne Cleare.
Sixteen (16) grandchildren and mine (9) great grandchildren.

It is indeed joy to serve at St. John‟s Anglican Church.

MR. RALPH SAWYER

Aka Uncle Ralph

Ralph Allen Sawyer was born on Harbour Island on September
5th 1953. He received his early education at St. Benedict‟s Catholic
School, Harbour Island.
Mr. Sawyer attends St. John‟s Anglican Church, where he‟s an
active member of the Anglican Church Men (ACM). He‟s very
helpful.
Mr. Sawyer is a painter by profession. He enjoys fishing and
feeding the chickens.
Mr. Sawyer‟s favourite phrase is “Poor, Black and Famous”.

COURAGEOUS EAGLES

MRS. CHERYL DARVILLE

Cheryl was born in Nassau to the late Albert and Frances Newbold of Harbour Island. As a
young girl she was awarded a scholarship to attend Queen‟s College in Nassau, where she
competed high school and stayed in the hostel where she met many wonderful friends who
she still has to this day.
It was also in Nassau where she met her husband Charles. They will be celebrating their 40th
year anniversary in July. It was upon marriage that she became an Anglican and was confirmed
into the Anglican Church by Bishop Michael Eldon. After marrying the love of her life, she
moved to Freeport and attended the Pro-Cathedral of Christ the King, up until they relocated
to Harbour Island in 2009 and began attending St. John‟s Anglican Church.
They have been blessed with three wonderful children. Candice, Chad and Christina who were
brought up in the Anglican Church and were taught by their example the way of Christian
living.
She is an avid gardener with a green thumb and loves all of God‟s creatures especially dogs
and chickens. She is kind, caring and always smiling and willing to help where needed. Cheryl
always recited Psalm 23 which is her favourite hymn is actually and Easter hymn “Up from the
Grave He Arose (Low in the Grave He Lay) as t is a lively hymn that rejoices that Jesus has
risen.

MR. PAUL & MRS. SHARON FARQUHARSON

Paul Farquharson, Q.P.M, Commissioner of Police (Retired) and Former
High Commissioner to the Court of St. James, United Kingdom and Sharon
Major-Farquharson, Director of the Department of Rehabilitative Welfare
Services (Retired) are the proud parents of three adult children and eight
grandchildren.
Mrs. Farquharson is a native of Harbour Island. Leaving at age 11 to pursue
further education in Nassau where she currently resides. In 2012, after
completing almost five years in the United Kingdom, a decision was made
to reconnect with the Island of her birth.
With St. John‟s Anglican Church being Mrs. Farquharson‟s childhood place
of worship, it was obvious that joining the congregation whenever visiting
the Island was common knowledge.
The Award came as a surprise to them because they supported the Church
without expecting anything in return. It was all done to the honour and
glory of God. They are happy to be included in the Church family and will
continue to make a difference to sustain St. John‟s Church for generations
to come.
On the occasion of your 250th anniversary celebration, the Rector, Vestry,
Organizations and members of the Church are to be congratulated.

Judith & Peter Stanton

Judith was born and raised in San Francisco, and Peter grew up in coastal
Massachusetts. They met as students in graduate school at Stanford University, and
their first date was attending Easter Sunday services at St. John‟s Church (Episcopal) in
Ross, California. They have been married for fifty-five years and have two children,
Peter and Nell.

Long-time members of St. John‟s Anglican, they have spent every Christmas in
Harbour Island for the past fifty-four years and have been full-time winter residents
since they retired in 2004 (Peter from Fidelity Investments and Judith from Harvard
University). They both serve on the Vestry of St. Aidan‟s Chapel (Episcopal) in
Dartmouth, MA, where Peter has overseen its investments for many years.

KATHRYN “KATHY”

WOODARD

Kathyrn Woodard was born in Montreal,
Canada enough years ago to be a senior
citizen. Music and singing have always been
a big part of her life, as has the Anglican
Church. At age 7 she joined the church
choir and it was there that she met her
husband, John, in 1975 when he became the
Choirmaster. They honeymooned at The
Current Club in 1978, fell in love with
Current and its people and vowed to return
every year. They did, and after retiring from teaching primary school and music
for 33 years in Montreal, Kathy fulfilled her dream of teaching in Eleuthera,
where she spent 2 years as the Grade 6 teacher at P.A. Gibson Primary School in
Hatchet Bay, retiring fully in 2003. She and John then became winter residents
in Current. John passed away in 2013 but Kathy continues to spend 4 months
here with wonderful friends made over the past 40 years. She feels she is home
when she arrives in Eleuthera.

Kathy and John both loved Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, singing with
Montreal‟s Lakeshore Light Opera for over 35 years. Although no longer
performing on stage, Kathy is still an active member of the group.
In Montreal, Kathy attends the Church of St. John the Baptist, a traditional
Anglican Church using the Book of Common Prayer. She considers St. Joseph‟s,
Upper Bogue, to be a very special place – her family. St. Joseph‟s may be tiny but
it is huge in heart and in the presence of God. Kathy says, “I feel so moved and
touched during services at St. Joseph‟s. The sandbars of Current are Kathy‟s
other special place where she feels He truly “walks with me and talks with me”.
