Welcome to Your Rancho Mirage Library
and Observatory

It gives us great pleasure to introduce our 24th Annual Summer Reading Club – Reading Around
the World. Readers of all ages are welcome to join us for eight weeks of adventure. Each week’s
programs will focus on a different continent (you’ll find a ton of interesting facts right here in this
guide), before our final week, when we will celebrate the entire planet. Our daily programs are
broken down into the following categories:
• Magnetic Monday: STEAM/STEM projects

• Big Show Tuesday: guest performances

• Wacky Wednesday: special projects and guests

• Tropical Thursday: arts and crafts (usually based on the weekly continent)

• Film Friday: recent theatrical releases and more (with popcorn!)

In addition to daily activities, this year’s summer reading club programming offers two exciting
contests. Young library visitors can enter our Library Card Design Contest which will feature the
winning artwork on our new Library cards. They can also enter the Inspire Short Story Contest
for a chance to see their original story brought to life by a group of professional actors this fall.
Participating in summer reading programs increases reading skills and prevents what is often
called the “summer slide” which can occur for students on break. We hope you’ll join us this year
for what is sure to be an exciting “trip around the world!”

Additional Highlights

• Saturday, July 20, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Celebrate
this giant leap for mankind at the Library and Observatory with activities and programs
throughout the day.

• Our Docu-Mondays series starts July 15 and will feature a lineup of nine terrific documentaries
selected and introduced by film historian Jason Bruecks.

• Interested in learning more about connected devices and home automation? Attend one of our
smart device workshops offered on the first four Wednesdays in July.

In addition to the programs mentioned here you’ll find even more opportunities for lifelong
learning and community involvement as you read through this guide. A combination of grants,
sponsorships, and individual donations help to fund a busy program schedule serving all ages
throughout the year. If you like what you see, please keep us going strong by donating to the
Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory Foundation.

See you this summer at the Library,
The Staff of Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory

People of all abilities are encouraged to attend Library programs. If you have special communication or access
needs, please contact the Library at 760-341-7323 four business days in advance of the event(s) you will attend.

Facts About Antarctica
• Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in terms of total area. The Antarctic Ice Sheet is 5.4

million square miles (14 million square kilometers).
• Antarctica does not have a native population. There are no countries in Antarctica;

however, seven nations claim different parts of it: New Zealand, Australia, France, Norway,
the United Kingdom, Chile and Argentina.
• The waters surrounding Antarctica are part of the “ocean conveyor belt,” a system in which
water circulates around the globe based on density and currents.
• McMurdo Station is a US research center on the southern tip of Ross Island. This is the
largest station, capable of supporting 1,250 residents.
• In 1840, it was established that Antarctica is a continent and not a group of islands.

to destroy a seemingly impregnable German fortress that threatens Allied naval ships in the
Aegean Sea.

This series is made possible by a generous gift from the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Foundation.

Mile... Mile & a Half (2013)
Monday, July 22, 2–3:30 pm
In an epic snow year, a group of artists leave their daily lives
behind to hike & record California’s historic John Muir
Trail, a 219 mile stretch from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney.
Their goal—complete the journey in 25 days while capturing the amazing sights and sounds
they encounter along the way.

Eric McLaughlin • Metal Inhabitants Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech
of a Rusty World: The Robotic
Explorers of Mars
Thursday, June 13, 6–7 pm

To travel to the surface of Mars is a harrowing
journey. Few craft have survived and, as yet, none
have returned. However, those craft were only
ever meant to return images and data. In that
mission, those that safely reached Mars have been
profoundly successful. Indeed, we have learned
many things from the landers and rovers on Mars.
Join us as we recount the journeys of some of our
robotic explorers.

Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday, July 20, 10 am–2 pm
This summer marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements of mankind.
Join us on July 20, fifty years to the day from when American astronauts Neil Armstrong and
Buzz Aldrin first walked on the Moon. Both the Library and Observatory will be filled with
activities and experiences for the whole family to enjoy. You’ll be able to take an Observatory
tour, explore the moon in virtual reality, view video clips and documentaries about the Apollo
program, enjoy moon-themed children’s activities, and much more.
Be sure to join us in the Community Room at 1 pm as we use our state-of-the-art audio
video system to transport you back to 1969, recreating the Moon landing with touchdown
at 1:17 pm, exactly fifty years after the first manned trip to the lunar surface. Join your
fellow community members to celebrate this amazing achievement together!
