PEACE IS A GROUP EFFORT
BY: GRACE WAYMIRE
Fair, respectful, polite, these are qualities that describe sportsmanlike behavior. This is the type of behav-
ior that is expected of all our club members at events, meetings, and trainings. I joined this club, like
many of you, to promote our breed and have fun with folks that love GSP’s. No matter our differences
we all have this in common. We, as a club, have a choice to create spaces that are safe and grounded in
trust that we will all treat each other with respect and kindness.
Many people experience abusive behavior, hostility, harassment and intimidation in their workplace,
public and private lives. Anger runs rampant all around us. This behavior is not always intentional.
Often people do not realize their behavior can be harmful to others. As a club we need to be inclu-
sive and encourage all members to not only participate in events but to have the experience of hosting
events. Seasoned members may become impatient and critical, seeing fault, and identifying failure. This
is when it is critical to be supportive, fair, respectful, and polite. The event is never the place to publicly
shame or critique.
This shift begins with a conversation. Share your story and discover your courage. As a club we are
generally fair, respectful, and polite to each other, but I have witnessed abusive behavior between club
members. It takes tremendous courage and vulnerability to take inventory and make apologies for any
behavior that has not been fair, respectful and polite. Discover your courage to stand up when you wit-
ness or are the recipient of harassing behavior. Peace is a group effort.

GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER CLUB OF
ILLINOIS FALL HUNTING TESTS
SUBMITTED BY: PERRY DLUGIE
GSPCI PRESIDENT
After a local spring hunting test season of the lowest number of entries in recent memory it was nice
to kick off the 2022 fall testing season with a healthy number of entries for each day’s tests.
Being the first fall test of the Chicago area predictably yielded a low number of passes, particularly at
the higher levels. Out of 65 entries a total of three master, 8 senior and 10 junior passes were regis-
tered over the weekend.
Thanks go out to our handlers, judges and the 28 GSPCI members who volunteered their time to help
make our tests a success.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE IN MID OCTOBER IS
SOMETHING SPECIAL
SUBMITTED BY: CHAR RUTAR
The GSPC of Middle Tennessee hosted its annual Specialty weekend October 14 – 16, 2022 in
Lebanon, TN with fall color coming on strong and majors on the table for four straight shows.
The party kicked off Friday with a Beginner Puppy Event including entries from 3 different litters.
Alessandra Foltz officiated and got to play with the youngsters. Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes
were judged by Jennifer Murphy, leading up to the Specialty classes and Breed competition under
Ms Foltz’s expert eye. Trophy Chair Angela Still outdid herself this year sending the winners home
with pieces of outstanding breed motif artwork and ribbons anyone would be proud to hang on
their wall. Hospitality chair Cindi Chilbert came up with unique burlap and rope-handled hospi-
tality bags for all exhibitors, who traveled in from 12 different states spanning the country from
Maine to Florida to California.
The Club supported the entries of the Tri Star Kennel Club all breed shows on Saturday and Sunday
ensuring major entry competition for their guests. Then hosted a second concurrent Specialty
Show Saturday afternoon with Jason Hoke passing judgement. Profuse thanks to all – judges, own-
ers, and exhibitors – who rolled with all the delays brought on by emergency adjustments to the
show schedule.

MEET THE BREED
SUBMITTED BY: BECKY FEIGH
On Oct. 15 AKC held another Meet The Breed event at the
Greater Columbus Convention Center located downtown
Columbus, Ohio. The event was open to the public to
come learn about all the different breeds. Once again the
GSPs did not disappoint their fans. Club members pro-
vided breed standard and health information along with
lots of photos of various GSPs. The public asked several
questions about exercise needs and what toys GSPs like
or will not destroy! The GSPCA would like to thank Club
Members Pamela Flores, Kelly Ladrigan, Andrea Quinter,
Melissa Wilde and Brad Dillman for taking time out of
their busy schedules to bring dogs to the event. The next
AKC Meet The Breed event will be Jan. 28-29 at the Jacob
K Javitz Center in New York. If you are interested in vol-
unteering at the next event, please contact Denise Avery –

MASON DIXON GSP CLUB SPECIALTY
SUBMITTED BY: SUSAN MASSART
It’s a wrap on the fall Mason-Dixon German Shorthaired Pointer Club Specialty and Supported Shows held on
November 4th and 5th at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell, VA, birthplace of Secretariat. We had an unusu-
ally mild fall weekend to enjoy being with our dog show friends and their lovely GSPs. A big thank you to all
our exhibitors, trophy donors and those contributing to our Saturday raffle drawing! We were honored to
have Tina Craig and June Cohron, DVM judge our Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes over the weekend. Their
gentle hands and encouraging feedback made everyone feel like a winner! We would also like to thank our
judges -- Kenneth Berg at our Supported Show and Sioux Forsyth-Green at our Specialty Show. Their exper-
tise and well run rings made it a pleasure to watch the beautiful dogs being shown.
This was the inaugural show for our “official” new Show Chair, Raquel Stonesifer. She led a dedicated com-
mittee that organized extensive raffle and trophy tables, which help our club cover expenses and support
other club events such as hunt tests, field trials and water tests. A club cannot survive without active mem-
bers to support these events. So, a very special thank you goes out to Raquel and the Show Committee,
Tiffany Harvey-Cessna, Patti Engle, Barbara Levenson, Jennifer Murphy, Beth Ritchie, and Barbara Cullerton.
They are now busy organizing our spring Supported and Specialty shows to be held at the 2023 Celtic Classic
cluster in York, PA on March 17th and 18th. We hope to see many more of our GSP family and meet many
new exhibitors at that show.
And finally, congratulations to all the winners! – Susan Massart, MDGSPC Show Committee

The GSPCA encourages our members to participate in the CHIC program. The Canine Health Information Center,
also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Founda-
tion (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
Effective May 1, 2014 the required tests are:
Cardiac: Exam (auscultation or echo) by a Board Certified Cardiologist at the Minimum age of 24 months, with
results posted to the OFA site. The age of 24 months is a change to this requirement. In addition, the exam must
now be performed only by a board certified cardiologist.
Hip Dysplasia: OFA Evaluation at Minimum age of 24 months or PennHIP.
Elbow Dysplasia: OFA Evaluation at Minimum age of 24 months. This is a new requirement based on the rising in-
cidence of elbow dysplasia in all sporting breeds including GSPs. Previously elbow dysplasia had been an optional
test. Elbow Dysplasia is a crippling hereditary disease.
Eye Exam: Eye examination by a Board Certified ACVO Ophthalmologist annually until Age 6. Results registered
with OFA. There is no recommended age to start as long as the eyes are open.
Cone Degeneration: Optigen test results registered with the OFA. Only one subsequent generation of two CD
tested dogs may be cleared by parentage. The following generation will have to be tested.
Optional Tests:
Autoimmune thyroiditis: Evaluation by an OFA approved laboratory with results posted to the OFA site. It is
recommended that the test be repeated every two years.
Von Willebrands Disease: Clearance using the vWD Type 2 genetic test from an OFA approved lab. (Genetic Test)
Results to be posted to the OFA site.
A special note about Lupoid Dermatosis (LD). In June 2013 the GSPCA Board of Directors reviewed information
from a retest of dogs previously tested for LD by cheek swab. Because some of the different results obtained from
the blood sample retest have not been explained and because the results of the LD research have not been pub-
lished in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Board has taken a neutral position on this test at this time. Breed-
ers need to consult with PennGen at the University of Pennsylvania to determine the usefulness of this test for their
breeding programs. (Please see the Members Section of the GSPCA web site for more information.)
*Note – In addition to the breed specific requirements above, a CHIC requirement across all participating breeds is that the dog
must be permanently identified via microchip or tattoo in order to qualify for a CHIC number.

WHELPING SUPPLIES - WHAT YOU NEED
SUBMITTED BY: MELISSA CAMPBELL
So, you’ve made the decision to breed your German Shorthaired Pointer, and your girl is pregnant and
expecting very soon. What do you need to make her comfortable and have a successful whelp?
There are some supplies that you will want to have available just in case your girl doesn’t do everything
herself, which is rare. You never know when you need to step in and lend a hand. These supplies will
cover most anything except medical emergencies where your choice is to call the vet.
Dog Breeding and Whelping Supplies: Litter or Whelping Box
This is the actual place where your girl will give birth to her puppies. You will need a litter or whelping
box. This can be as elaborate or simple as you like. The result should be your dam is happy, warm, and
comfortable.
Ready-made whelping boxes come in different sizes and are normally equipped with pig rails and an open-
ing for moms to come and go. The whelping box should always be sturdy, washable, and easy to put togeth-
er and take apart. Some breeders like to use kiddie swimming pools.
You will want to equip your whelping box with comfortable bedding and warmth. Neonates cannot main-
tain the body temperature, so it is up to you to provide additional warmth by way of heat lamps, heating
pads, or heat nests.
Timing the Time of Labor: Thermometer
Your Dam’s temperature will drop to around 98 degrees F about 24 hours before she goes into labor. You
will want to have a rectal thermometer and lubricating gel to take her temperature. A normal dog’s tem-
perature is between 100 and 101. Once the temperature drops below 99 degrees, labor is near. Keep your
thermometer clean and in your dog breeding and whelping supplies toolbox.
Weight Scale: Puppies Weights
A scale is necessary if you want to record the weight of your newborn puppies. This is important because
you will want to assure your puppies are gaining a little weight each day. You can use a postal scale or pur-
chase a scale that will allow you to weigh older puppies and even adults.
Instruments for Delivering Puppies
I keep a tray of dog breeding and whelping supplies ready for
the next litter and stock it as needed. You will want to have the
following on hand:
Sterile Gloves: I like to keep gloves on hand in case
mom is having difficulty and needs a little help bring-
ing her puppies into the world. Never, never pull a
puppy out, but work with her contractions. Breech
births may need a little help from you.
Clamps: You will want to clamp off the cord so you will
be able to cut it and free the puppy from the placenta.
Curved hemostats work best, but you may also want to
consider umbilical cord clamps or even dental floss for
tying it off.
Bulb Syringe: Once the puppy is free of the water sac,
you will want to suction out the fluid in his/her lungs and
mouth. A small infant bulb syringe is the best way to do this. Suction the nose and then the mouth.
Wash clothes and Towels: Your Dam will undoubtedly try to clean up her pups and keep them
warm. If you want to help, you can try to dry off puppies with clean washcloths and towels.
Keeping the whelping box dry and clean is also important, so you will want to provide dry bed-
ding. You can use disposable wee pads or continually replace soiled bedding with clean fresh
towels or blankets. Have plenty of extras available to replace after each puppy is whelped.

Afrin or similar product: Active Ingredients: Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride (0.05 %), Nasal
Decongestant. If a puppy is having wheezing sounds and you are not able to completely clear the
lungs, place 1-2 drops of Afrin or a similar product directly on the puppy’s tongue to help dry up
any fluid from the birthing process.
Colorful Bands will help you identify individual puppies. When the entire litter looks alike, it is
important to identify individual puppies. You can use nail polish, but these bands are just as easy.
Flashlight: For use when taking your mom out at night.
Products to Help Labor Proceed
I keep Ora-Cal on hand to use AFTER the first puppy has been born. Oral Cal works similarly to
oxytocin to increase uterine contractions. Never give this medication until after the first puppy
has been born.
High-caloric nutritional drops are helpful for extra help for both mom and puppies during labor
and delivery and afterward. I like to use Kayo Syrup and the moms love it.
Betadine liquid or swabs: To prevent infection, some type of antiseptic for the umbilical cord
stump is recommended. Betadine liquid can be applied with a cotton ball, or you may choose to
purchase iodine pads to apply to the umbilical cord.
Alcohol, alcohol pads, or another type of disinfecting solution for disinfecting instruments such as
scissors or hemostats
Clock or watch for timing births.
Paper and Pen for Recording Birth Times and Weights. As part of my dog breeding and whelping
supplies.
After the puppies arrive
Puppy Formula
Hand feeding means that you are giving your puppies a canine formula in addition to or in lieu of their
nursing on mama’s nipples using a bottle or syringe. I recommend keeping a can of Goats milk formula on
hand for the possible puppy that needs additional calories or if you feel one or more of the puppies is too
weak to compete for sufficient food from the mother. There are
other times when this formula comes in handy.
If your Dam has a very large litter, you may also want to supple-
ment their feeding just to help mom out until her full milk comes
in. Also, there is the occasional litter when mom’s milk has
not come in and you will need to take over feeding the puppies
entirely. This is a huge job that needs to be done about every 2 to
3 hours around the clock while you wait for your girl to produce
enough milk.
Don’t start feeding your puppies until you know it is necessary.
The first milk that the mom produces is called colostrum and is
rich in antibodies needed for immune support.
Syringes, Bottles, Nipples
You will need a way to get the milk into the puppy and I recom-
mend using a syringe with a rubber nipple top. Small dog bottles
and nipples work well too. Some people use sponges and that is an option too.
Tube Feeding for Extremely Weak Puppies is an option only if you know what you are doing. Do not
attempt to tube feed unless you have been trained by a vet or vet tech.
Now that the puppies are here and are thriving take time to enjoy this special time with mom and that
sweet puppy breath.
