Another reason to buy a young bitch from proven female lines is that many of the traits we most desire
in our brood matrons are nonquantifiable. The ideal brood bitch is easy to breed, easy to carry, and
easy to whelp. She feeds her puppies well and has good maternal instincts that include being protective
of her puppies without being overly aggressive toward her human family. Thankfully, most bitches
enjoy raising their puppies, but the canine world still has its share of bitches with fertility problems and
poor mothering skills. You may not know any of this about your chosen bitch, unfortunately, until she
has actually produced a litter. You can minimize the possibility of potential reproductive problems or
mothering concerns if you examine her dam’s and grand dam’s breeding histories.
A bitch with a winning show record will always be a strong selling point for her puppies until a few of
these are old enough to carry the torch for their siblings. These bitches are frequently very expensive, so
the next best thing is to find a younger full or half sister of a bitch whose bloodline and show record you
admire. Although it can be frustrating if you have to wait for a young bitch to mature to breeding age,
you can use the time to good advantage by showing her to her championship and possibly performance
titles so that by the time you choose to retire her to the whelping box she will have a successful record
of her own.
It is sometimes possible to find an older bitch whose owner has already kept good daughters to carry
the bloodline into the next generation of an established breeding program. When convincing the owner
of the strength of your good intentions, it will be helpful to have an idea of which stud dog you would
like to breed to. Maybe you have access to a stud dog that the owner would have loved to have used if
he had been available. If you happen to own a very nice stud dog yourself, another successful option
is to lease the bitch you covet for a certain number of breeding seasons and keeping one or two of the
best puppies from each litter. If you feel confident in your instincts that something else will work, by all
means, take the chance, but back it up with thorough pedigree analysis to ensure the odds are in your
favor. The research involved may sound like it is more trouble than it is worth but compared to the
energy you are going to put into breeding, whelping, feeding, handling, and marketing, it is well worth
the effort. And there is nothing more discouraging than starting off with sincere enthusiasm and being
faced with the difficulty of trying to sell disappointing puppies.
Address Potential Concerns
Finally, have your foundation prospect examined thoroughly by your veterinarian not only for basic
health and fitness and freedom from disease but for any potential breeding problems. A veterinary
exam will make sure that her reproductive tract and ovaries are normal for her age and stage of
development. If she is an older bitch that’s been bred before, a thorough veterinary exam is a must.
Nothing is more discouraging than purchasing or leasing a nice brood bitch, only to discover that her
uterus is so scarred from infection or whelping difficulties that her chances of maintaining a pregnancy
are tenuous at best. Try to get a complete medical and breeding history on the bitch to see whether
she has had any problems showing heat, conceiving, and carrying a litter to term. These are necessary
attributes for any brood bitch, and all of these are legitimate concerns for every breeder. Sometimes,
despite your best information and experience, you are going to wind up with a bitch that just simply
doesn’t fit in your breeding program. When this happens, you have to be realistic. Be prepared to spay
and keep her as a pet or cut your losses and sell her unless your breeder’s contract prohibits this option.
If you are like most breeders, you are short on time, money, and space, and she will be an emotional
drain.
Takaway
There is incredible satisfaction in seeing a good
bitch’s look stamped on her descendants and
in watching their successes in the show ring
mount as they mature. The pleasure is made
more personal by the fact that each of your
foundation bitch’s progeny is a special edition.
Of course, the better the puppies are, the more
credit the sire will likely get. However, the
breeder knows down deep that the youngsters
are so very successful because of the quality of
the lovely bitch playing with the children in the
backyard. She will prove her value many times
over throughout the course of her life.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
BY: SHERRIE MOSELEY & SHARON FITZPATRICK
Gene Moseley, Jr.
Gene is a native Houstonian. Gene started out hunting quite a bit in
his early years and continues to enjoy hunting whenever he gets the
opportunity. In the early ’70s, he spent several years working with Re-
trievers. His first pointing dogs were Brittany’s. In the late ’70s, Gene
was a member of the Texas Coastal Brittany Club (TCBC”) and the Gulf
Coast German Shorthaired Pointer Club (“GCGSPC”), and then he sub-
sequently became a member of the German Shortaired Pointer Club
of America (“GSPCA”). He is presently a lifetime member of both the
GCGSPC and GSPCA. Gene has been an extremely proactive member
of each club for which he was and is a member. In 1983, he bought
his first German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), and when he lost his Brit-
tany’s, he eventually transitioned to GSPs only and was no longer a
member of the TCBC. Over the past 44 years, Gene has either served
as President or 2nd Vice President, which is the role of the Field Trial
Chairman or in some other capacity in the GCGSPC. The influence he
has had on chairing the many events run by the GCGSPC has been significant, including but not limited
to the GCGSPC’s annual de-snaking program.
Gene was very instrumental in working with AKC in the initial stages of hunt tests and was the person
who advocated for the gallery wagon at the hunt tests. He believes that every handler should be able to
witness each brace to give them a better understanding of the sport.
Gene has competed in and continues to compete in AKC and NGSPA field trial events. He has earned
numerous wins throughout the years with his dogs and dogs he has handled for friends. Since 1997 he
has competed in the GSPCA Amateur Championship and Futurity. Over his GSP career, he has finished
15 FC/AFC along with myself, Sherrie Moseley, and continues to compete in the sport with continued
success. Gene is a dedicated lifetime amateur and trains his own dogs. He has only sought help from
a professional twice in his career with force breaking to retrieve. He co-owned the #4 GSPCA All-time
Field Producing Dam w/Sherrie Moseley: FC/AFC Laski’s Dandi Dixie Darling F-ROMXX 1994 - 2006. The
positive influence of dogs he has bred continues to make a lasting contribution to the GSP breed.
Gene served as the South Central Regional Director of the GSPCA for ten years, from 2001 to 2011. Dur-
ing his tenure on the board, he was instrumental with the following programs:
• ROM Program: The ROM Program was initially only representing conformation dogs, and the pro-
gram was modified to include performance dogs. The program changed many times over, but to
date, all dogs are represented;
• Yearbook committee. Assisted in bringing back All-Time Top Producing Database to GSPCA and
found persons to help keep this program current in the year-
book;
• GSP Bronze Committee Chairman: Two-year program to get
the GSPCA represented at the National Bird Dog Museum w/
outside life-size GSP bronze and inside smaller replica thank-
ing Purina and other donors of the project;
• GSPCA National Field Trial Clothing Project: With help from
the President of the Club started GSPCA online clothing pro-
ject; and
• Liaison from Board to GSPCA National Field Trial Committee
for ten years.
Gene serves as the Chairman of the GSP wing at the National Bird
Dog Hall of Fame, where he has several ongoing projects, including
the GSPCA/NGSPA National Wall Presentations.
Gene has been judging AKC field trials since the early 80s and has had the honor of judging numerous
regional and national championships for the GSPCA, NGSPA, and other pointing breeds, including the
AKC. The following are some of the National Championships he has judged:

Gene has spent, and continues to spend, countless hours over the past 35 years or so sharing his
knowledge and mentoring numerous newcomers to the sport of hunt test and field trialing as well as
educating newcomers of the GSP breed in general. Gene Moseley has significantly contributed to the
GSP Breed, the hunt test and field trialing sport, for 44 years. In more ways than one, he has contrib-
uted in assisting in the history and betterment of the GSP breed with the GSPCA and his chairmanship
of the GSP Wing of the National Bird Dog Hall of Fame. He is most deserving of being elected to the
GSPCA Hall of Fame. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Sherrie Moseley

Joe Vicari
Joe Vicari began field trialing German Shorthaired Pointers over 45 years ago and has spent this time
dedicated to training, handling, breeding, competing and helping others.
Joe started in the German Shorthaired Pointer breed in 1971 and
was active until his death in 2020. He had the good fortune with
his first GSP to win the National Amateur Field Championship and
having that dog end up in the GSPCA hall of fame. That dog’s name
was PJ Wildfire.
To prove it wasn’t just luck - as an Amateur, Joe has 4 dogs in the
GSPCA hall of fame – currently more than anyone else in the breed:
NAFC/FC/AFC PJ Wildfire 1991
NAFC/FC/AFC Wildfire’s Angel 2006
FC/AFC Nicky Von Blitz 2009
FC/AFC PJ Wildfire’s Super Sport 2011
Two of the dogs won the National Amateur Field Championship -
PJ Wildfire and Wildfire’s Angel.
PJ Wildfire was also inducted in the Bird Dog Hall of Fame in 2009
in Grand Junction, TN and Joe himself was inducted in 2014. Joe
was inducted into the Field Trial Clubs of Illinois Hall of Fame in
2020.
Joe’s influence on the German Shorthaired Pointer breed has been significant. Joe owned and trained
over 24 AKC Field Champions and over 17 AKC Amateur Field Champions. His four dogs in the Hall of
Fame speak to his everlasting impression.
Over the years, his influence of dogs on the German Shorthaired Pointer gene pool includes not only
dogs he bred and competed with. The number of dogs out of his Wildfire breeding owned and handled
by others is myriad and these dogs continue to be a strong influence in the genetic pool of the breed.
They have earned Hunt Test, Obedience, Show and other titles.
Joe served in numerous official capacities with the Fort Dearborn German Shorthaired Pointer Club,
German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Illinois, Rock River German Shorthaired Pointer Club and NGSPA
Region 5. He served on the Board of Directors of the NGSPA, the National German Shorthaired Point-
ing Dog Association (NGPDA), and the Field Trial Clubs of Illinois. In addition, Joe served as Field Tri-
al Chairman, Secretary and committee member for numerous field trials, ensuring smooth running
events. At events he always said to club committees - “Just tell me what you need me to do and I’ll do it.”
Contributing to every aspect of bird dogs and field trials through the years, Joe judged numerous Field
Dog Stud Book (American Field) and AKC field trials for a number of different pointing breeds, includ-
ing weekend, regional and National Championships.
Joe conducted many seminars by himself and along with Delmar Smith, Bob West and Bob McKowen.
These seminars assisted newcomers to the Bird dog sport in the development of their dogs. He also pro-
vided bird dog demonstrations for Midwest Outdoors. He generously helped out with many local clubs
“training days” and local demonstrations.
Joe was most proud of helping introduce newcomers to this sport by assisting them with training, ques-
tions and any other way that he could. His knowledge and assistance was offered not only to those who
had his breeding but anyone who needed advice and was open to listen. Joe has also brought his son,
daughter and grandson to this sport.

IN MEMORY
GERALDINE A. IRWIN
Geraldine A. Irwin – Hall of Fame Inductee
passes away at 89 years of age
The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America mourns the loss
of a member of our Hall of Fame. Our condolences to her family and
friends.
Geri was part of the group of initial inductees when the Hall of Fame
was created by the Board in 2001. The following comments were
made as part of her nomination:
“Very few people have made such monumental contributions of
time, leaving a lasting impression upon many aspects of the German
Shorthaired Pointer and the organizations responsible for perpetuat-
ing this breed. In the archives of the history of the GSPC of Colorado
and the GSPCA the name Geri Irwin is associated as an officer and a
member of nearly all of the committees for the past 35 years. She was
one of the hardest working and most dedicated individuals working
toward the advancement of the German Shorthaired Pointer. It is
doubtful that anyone has contributed more time and energy to the
administration of the GSP world than she has.”
Her obituary reads:
Geri Trumbo Irwin Shultz, daughter of James F. and Blanche Trumbo of Bedford, Iowa, died on Jan. 8, 2021
at her home in Sedona, AZ. Geri grew up on the family farm southeast of Bedford, Iowa. She attended rural
schools before graduating from Bedford High School. She married Doyle W. (Buck) Irwin and had a son,
Richard. They lived in Bedford until moving to Colorado.
Geri was proud of climbing several 14,000 ft. mountains, including the formidable Long’s Peak.
Interest in bird dogs led to kennel ownership and breeding a line of German Shorthaired Pointers. Years of
work with the breed led to positions in the National German Shorthaired Pointer Club and being granted
honorary life membership.
After Buck’s death, she moved to the Sedona, Arizona area where she lived until her passing. While there
she married Gene Shultz. She is survived by her son, and daughter-in-law, Richard and Julia, her stepson
Randy Shultz, many friends and her beloved cat.
Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa. At her request, no services will be conducted.
(Bedford Times Press, Bedford, Iowa, Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, page 2)
Geri married Doyle “Buck” Irwin April 9, 1950 and he passed away in 1993.

AKC CODE OF SPORTSMANSHIP
PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC’s birth.
Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sec-
tors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsman-
ship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful
to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.
• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.
• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as
winning and losing with grace.
• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by inject-
ing personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior.
• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.
• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.
• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that
the judge’s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs.
• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.
• The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred
dogs.
• Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the
merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.
• Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.
• Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.
• Sportsmen are willing to share honest & open appraisals of both the strengths & weaknesses of their breed-
ing stock.
• Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them.
• Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.
• Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the
sport.

THE BLACK GSP - ORIGIN AND HISTORY
SUBMITTED BY PATTE TITUS, BREED EDUCATION / HISTORIAN
One hundred and fifteen years ago the color black was introduced in the GSP breed.
Ideally, the AKC standard was to be an evaluation in the conformation ring for breeding stock but it has
never carried any restrictions as those applied in Germany. The German dogs must pass the conforma-
tion requirement prior to being tested for performance. They must gain a rating high enough in both
to be certified as “breeding stock”.
Often, the question is asked - “How can a black GSP be registered if the color is listed as a disqualifica-
tion in the breed standard?” The answer is; AKC has an open registration for the GSP breed and if an
applicant meets the AKC registration requirements the dog can be registered.
With the first cross, the German breeders learned the color black was dominant to brown, but with suc-
cessive breedings back to the established GSP lines they also learned to use a black dog or bitch if they
wanted the black coat. Two brown dogs could not produce the black coat.
If we only consider coat color as a reason for health, temperament or other issues in our Breed, then we
really need to think about the predominance of brown dogs that have been in the gene pool since Doc
Thornton imported Senta in 1925.
It also defies logic that in a litter with a mix of liver coats and black ones that only those with black coats
would have health, temperament, etc. issues. Today we have genetic testing for recessive genes and
other means to test for health issues.
Abbreviated chronology:
To understand the development of the various dog breeds in Germany in the 1800’s one needs to be
aware there was more than one Studbook. The Deutsch Hundestammbuch (D.H.St.B) set up like the
British Kennel Club Studbook included all breeds.
There was concern that the D.H.St.B. couldn’t do justice for each of the breeds being developed because
there wouldn’t be enough individual space for good physical descriptions or pertinent information
about genealogical problems peculiar to each breed to help guide breeders. Those involved with de-
veloping the German Shorthaired Pointer agreed the breed specific studbook (Zuchtbuch) would better
serve the purpose than the all-inclusive Hundestammbuch.
1890 - The Brauntiger Club, subsequent Parent Club for the Breed is founded in Berlin. Ernst v. Otto, Th.
Stockel & Friedrich v. Witzleben created the first guide for a pedigreed German Shorthair.
The first three breed books that mark the beginning of recording the foundation stock.
1897 - The first Studbook “Shorthair”(S.tK.) published list 1-1074 entries. Hektor 1(wh. 1872) was listed
first followed with several other dogs recorded posthumously because of their influence on the early
development of the breed.
1898 - Volume 2 - list entries 1705 to 3408 and contains 5 Weimaraners.
1899 - Volume 3 - list entries 3409 - 5112 and contains 19 Weimaraners
With these three volumes published, a new period of development for the breed arrived. They con-
tained multiple illustrations, abridged pedigrees of the most outstanding dogs and detailed contribu-
tions by the most prominent Shorthair experts of the day. It was not just a pedigree register but also an
annual chronicle.
In addition to the 5112 entries that listed all German Shorthairs two other developing breeds, the “Wur-
temberger” and the Weimaraner are found.
1900 - Volume 4 - list entries 437 of which 62 were Weimaraner.

1902 - The German Shorthair Standard authored by Ernst v.Otto, Stockel & Witzleben is printed in Herr
Seiger’s 1951 book, The Complete German Shorthaired Pointer and is the basis for the 1946 AKC Stand-
ard. (the first black GSP was not whelped yet)
1903 - Volume 7 - list new entries - 906
1907 - Beechgrove Bess, a solid black 7th generation Arkwright Pointer bitch is imported to Germany
by Christian Bode and Dr.Waechter. Bess was mated to GSP Treu Schmarsow and produced Wach-
Luna(#1Pr. K.) first registered Prussian. Luna was half GSP and half Arkwright Pointer. She was then
bred to GSP Treu II v. d. Maylust and produced Wach Freya(#2Pr.K.). With this mating the resultant
litter would now be three quarters German Shorthair and one quarter Arkwright pointer.
1908 - Nine clubs made up the German Shorthair Association with two notable names among the nine
chairmen, Dr. Paul Kleemann and Dr. Max Waechter, breeder of the black(Prussian) Shorthairs.
1913 - Wach Tell(Pr. K. #6) owned by Herr Bode was registered and the grandsire of Arko Kothenwald
(Pr. K.#49).
Based on the quality and field performance of get from these litters other breeders began to incorporate
them in their breeding programs.
1924 - Dr. Kleeman in an effort to keep the peace and probably to withhold judgment proposed a section
in the Studbook Shorthair to register the black German Shorthair with the designation Pr.K. “Prussian”.
At the time, Prussia was the largest and most influential state in Germany - the dogs were being bred in
Germany using the existing German stock and like the Prussian flag they were black and white.
1925 - Dr. Thornton of Missoula, MT responds to an article by Austrian breeder Edward Rindt and sub-
sequently imports Senta von Hohenbruck to the United States.
1930 - The AKC recognized the German Shorthaired Pointer breed.
1933 - It was Angus v. Schwarzatal (Pr.K. #102) qualities that persuaded the German Club members for
the black dogs to be registered in the same manner as the brown ones. It was not the color but confor-
mation and performance that was of utmost importance.
1934 -The previous registration system was discontinued with both the black and brown dogs recorded
in the Zuchtbuch.
1935 - Zuchtbuch - entries - 2091 - Pages 56 - 201 record both black dogs and brown dogs under the title
Kurzhaarige deutsche Vorstehunde. At the time there are 254 Prussian dogs registered.
1935 - The AKC official publication, “Sporting Dogs” The breeds, origin, history and standards recog-
nized by The American Kennel Club, Group 1, 19 breeds. The German Shorthair Pointer standard ap-
proved in April of 1935 is courtesy of the National German Shorthaired Pointer Dog Club. Unknown if
this organization is the same group of individuals that subsequently petitioned AKC in 1938 to be the
Parent Club for the breed, but Dr. Thornton is referenced as being honorary President.
According this standard the acceptable color was - Solid liver, liver and white spotted, liver and white
spotted and ticked, liver and white ticked. Any colors other than liver and white not permitted. Listed
in Faults: a black coat or tri-colored. Any color except liver or some combination of liver and white. (This
is the first use of “liver” instead of brown)
This quote by Dr. Thornton might provide some insight to these additions. “I was once asked what we
could do to improve the G.S. Pointer. That is a good question. It is a crime the way this breed was abused
in their early history here in the U.S.” He stated the early imports were crossed with Wires, Springers, and
other hunting dogs and sold with papers as purebred GSPs. He continued on to say, “Also had pictures of
some beautiful pups sent me by one of the early officers of the breed here in the U. S. that were half Spring-
er. Fact is they registered them falsely from Chesapeak(sic) to every traveling hound that happen along.”
One might deduce that the basis for the 1935 Fault section referencing black or tri-color is a result of the
coat variations of the crossbred pups Dr. Thornton refers to being registered as purebred.
1938 - German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America petitions to become the Parent Club for the breed
and on May 7, 1946 AKC approved their first breed standard. The acceptable color section is almost
verbatim to the one printed in the 1935 AKC publication with exception of the addition, liver roan, and

gray white which is found in the 1902 German Standard. No change to the colors listed as Faults,
“...black coat or tri-colored, any color except liver or some combination of liver and white.”
1939-1945 (WW II) - The Zucthbuch was not published for several years.
1949 - first post war issue published - Volume G - list entries - 1572 encompassed 1941 to 1949 indicated
a significant drop in the number of dogs/bitches being registered.
What does this have to do with the black GSP? They were fewer in numbers to begin with, all of the
breeders and their dogs suffered hardships associated with the War in addition to a concerted effort
by the fascist government to get rid of all but the dark brown roan dogs. In an effort to protect their
breeding stock owners hid or sent them to neighboring countries. As the War expanded into the sur-
rounding areas even some of those efforts failed.
1967 - Quell Pottmes, whelped - the first black and white Kurzhaar Sieger then in 1970 a Kleeman Sei-
ger. Out of a solid black sire and black ticked mother, Quell was a heavily ticked and patched black
and white dog that was a very influential stud only to be surpassed by his grandson World Seiger Ciro
v. Bichtelwald a black ticked dog.
The Stramanns of Hege-Haus kennel purchased Ciro to improve the head and hindquarter confor-
mation of the inbred Hege-Haus dogs. Ciro was a superb producer not only for the Hege-Haus and
Niestetal kennels but also for a range of breeders throughout Germany. Ciro’s influence was not only
in Germany but also Scandinavia, United States, England and Australia through his get and grand get.
Dogs bred down from Ciro continue to influence the GSP breed we know today.
60 years earlier the Breeders concern was conformation and performance that was important. With so
many of the breeding programs decimated by the war years, they looked to bloodlines to help rebuild
their kennels. If the pre-potent sire was black and white or brown and white the coat color didn’t mat-
ter.
After WW II more Shorthairs began to find their way to the United States. Because of the concerted ef-
fort during the war years to rid the breed of anything but the dark brown road coat, it stands to reason
most of those imported were this coat pattern.
1962 - AKC directs the Parent Club to reorganize, at which time a Breed Standard committee is estab-
lished to review the 1946 version.
1967 - Concern that GSP’s were being bred to field Pointers and Setters to enhance their field trial abil-
ity a Breed integrity committee was established to document litters and pedigrees. Also a discussion
about the study of blood types and sub-types specifically related to Shorthairs to potentially identify
other breed crosses.
1976 - AKC Standard - Based primarily on the 1902 German Standard with more detail than the 1946
version. The process began in 1968 and culminated with a vote of the membership in 1974. In some
parallel to the 1935 “fault section” the 1976 version adds an expanded color disqualification section,
“a dog with any area of black, red, orange, lemon or tan or a dog solid white will be disqualified”. This
might more accurately reflect a growing concern that the German Shorthairs was being bred to field
pointers and setters.
1992 - the GSP Standard is formatted according to an AKC directive with no changes to the section on
color or disqualifications.
The chronology was abbreviated to stop with the 1992 AKC Standard because it is still in effect today.
The black GSP has accomplishments in AKC’s performances events as does their sire/dam and litter-
mates.
Performance is predicated on correct conformation. The color of a dog’s coat is not a factor when it
comes to performance.

THE RESCUE STORY OF BUBBA GUMP
BY: JINNY NEALON
In September 1996, our “Lucy” (CH Rosecommon’s I Love Lucy) presented us with four lovely puppies. Lucy had
been bred to a very handsome champion from Maryland who was a solid liver. We received two liver dogs from
this joining, a ticked dog and a ticked bitch. As the weeks went by, we chose a solid liver male that we named For-
rest as our keeper. (Rosecommon’s Destiny)
Our Forrest grew into a very handsome boy as the months went by! We had very high expectations for him. Not only
was he handsome, but he was birdie and a very special boy. He and I were together every day as I worked at home.
We took long walks in the woods, went down to pick up the mail, went for rides in the car, and just had a lot of fun
together. He was my constant companion and my buddy. Although I have had other dogs, Forrest crept way into my
heart, and I loved him very much.
When Forrest turned six months old, the unbelievable happened. Forrest became very ill right out of nowhere. My
healthy, robust puppy had to be put to sleep as there was no hope. I was devastated! I took him to the vet and held
him in my arms as I had held all my dogs when it was their time to go and watched and cried as the life passed from
him. It is always difficult to lose a dog you love at any stage in their life, but when you lose one so young with so much
promise, it is a feeling that no one can understand unless they have been there.
Several weeks went by, and I received a call from Peg Gagnon. The Framingham Massachusetts Dog Officer was holding
a GSP puppy. Peg asked if there were any chance that I would transport the dog from Massachusetts to New Hampshire
to be fostered. Since I had plans to go to the Boston area that week, I told Peg that I would be more than happy to help
rescue out. I called the Framingham dog officer and made arrangements to meet her after my appointment in Boston.
The Framingham dog officer told me that the dog in question was a six-month-old male GSP puppy. This pup had been
taken from its owners because it had been abused and neglected. He had been tied to a tree for the entire winter,
never brought into the house, regardless of the weather. He had no shelter, not even a blanket on which he could
sleep. A 40-pound bag of dog food was opened and left outside by the dog for him to eat. The food was wet and rancid.
The dog officer finally got a court order to remove the pup, but she wanted to get him out of Massachusetts as soon
as she could so that there would be no way that these people could ever get him back. She said he was sweet, and a
vet had checked him out.
We made arrangements to meet on Route 9 to transport the pup to New Hampshire. I got to the agreed-upon location,
and the dog officer was waiting in her Van. I pulled in and greeted her. Then she opened the back of her Van. And
in the crate was a wiggly, happy GSP pup. At first glance, he looked like a handsome pup; then, she opened the crate
door. Out bound a solid liver male puppy! I started to cry. I explained my story of Forrest to her as the puppy kissed
and jumped on me with gusto. Neither of us could believe the coincidence. On my ride back to New Hampshire, I
called my husband, Jack, on my cell phone.
I told Jack that this could not just be a coincidence, that I genuinely believed that in some way Forest had intervened
and that it was destiny that brought me to help out this pup at this particular time. Jack said to me, “since we lost our
Forrest, named after the character Forest Gump, why not call this rescue pup after Forrest Gump’s best friend? And
so it was that we named him Bubba.
Bubba was right at home in our kennel. He picked up training very quickly for a dog who had lived outside his entire
young life. He was crate trained and house trained in 2 weeks. Jack took him out and put birds out for him. He pointed
birds! We worked him on walking on a leash, taught him to come, and played ball with him every day.
Then that inevitable day came. A phone call from a young man from Candia, New Hampshire; he was referred to me
for a rescue dog. This man had owned sporting dogs in the past and wanted a dog that could be a family companion
and a hunting companion. I told him about Bubba, and he was very anxious to meet him. He told me about his wife
and baby daughter and wanted to know if Bubba would like children. We made an appointment, and I told him to
come and meet Bubba for himself. I told him that I didn’t think there was anyone that Bubba wouldn’t love.
It was love at first sight for both this young man and Bubba. It was also a love story for the entire family. Bubba is liv-
ing with his new family and loving every minute of it. His name has been changed, but he’s still the same lovable guy.
I didn’t have Forrest for very long, but I think of him every day that passes by. What he could have been and all the
fun I missed out on with him. Then I think of Bubba and the joy he is giving his new family, and I thank Forest for
ensuring that the stars were just right the day Peggy called. I got to have a little bit of him back, if only for a short time.
And that another loving GSP can have a wonderful life with people who will truly love him.
