The American Kennel Club (AKC) published a bro- www.protecttheharvest.com
chure titled, “Be Your Dog’s Owner, Not its Guard-
ian”. The article outlined four main challenges that
bolster their viewpoint against classifying animal
owners as guardians:
1. Owners have personal rights to protect their
property (dogs) from undue restrictions and
the term guardian represents a first step
in eliminating an individual’s right to own,
breed, sell and participate in events with
dogs.
2. Regarding public safety, the declassifying of
dogs as property could result in numerous
legal challenges. Veterinary and health care
challenges include the fact that if people
don’t “own”: their dogs, then who can make
decisions involving veterinary care, sterili-
zation, or euthanasia.
Most importantly, the AKC states changing the clas-
sification of dogs as property sets a very danger-
ous legal precedent. By declassifying animals as
property, it raises their legal status. Many extrem-
ist groups seek to convince the courts that animals
have rights and should have the same status as hu-
mans.

OBITUARY: CHARLIE BLACKBOURN
FORMER GSPCA PRESIDENT & BOARD MEMBER, PASSES AWAYS
AT 86 YEARS OF AGE.
Charlie Blackbourn – Former GSPCA President and Board Member, passes
away at 86 years of age.
The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America mourns the loss of one
of our Life-Time Members and a great contributor to our organization. Our
condolences to his family and friends.
Charlie was instrumental in the development of our Hall of Fame for Peo-
ple. He also played a significant role in establishing the National Amateur
Gun Dog Championship. His GSPs under the kennel name of Cebourn had
accomplishments in the field, show, and other events. He and his wife Lynn
had two Dual Champions - DC Cebourn’s Hotrod Harry and DC AFC Cebourns
Erick of Hustleberg, JH.
His obituary reads:
Dr. Charles “Charlie” E. Blackbourn, DVM, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022, in Winter Haven, Flor-
ida, at the age of 86. Dr. Blackbourn was born on March 24, 1936, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Lisle and
Myrl Blackbourn. He did his undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin and studied Veterinary Medi-
cine at the University of Minnesota. Although his fondest childhood memories were on the family farm
in Beetown, Wisconsin, he spent his early school years in Milwaukee, where his father coached high
school football. After graduating from veterinary school, he became a large and small animal veterinar-
ian in Southern Wisconsin, establishing Rock Veterinary Clinic in Janesville, which ran for over 30 years.
Dr. Blackbourn was an avid sports fan with an undying devotion to the Badgers, Brewers, Bucks, and of
course, the Packers. He was also an avid sportsman with many celebrated fishing trips to Canada with
friends and many early mornings in duck blinds or pheasant hunting with his German Shorthair Point-
ers. He had an adventurous spirit and brought that on all his travels - leaving the beaten track as soon
as he got wherever he was. His happiest years were on his Edgerton farm, with his wife Lynn and their
dogs and horses and sporting life. He participated in field trials with the dogs and horses and eventually
judged and served on the boards of multiple Field Trial and Kennel Club organizations. In his later years,
after Lynn’s death, he enjoyed many sunny days and good friends in his adopted home of Swiss Village in
Winter Haven, Florida. There you could find him with his nose in a book, watching ESPN or winning at
Euchre with a brandy Old Fashioned.
Dr. Blackbourn is survived by his sons, Charles Joseph “Joe” (Terri) Blackbourn of Scottsdale, AZ, and Da-
vid Blackbourn of Scottsdale, AZ; daughters, Linda Blackbourn of Silver Spring MD, and Heather Massey-
Jones of Janesville WI; 6 grandchildren: Rachel Blackbourn, Zoe Blackbourn, Alessandra Mantovani,
Matteo Mantovani, Lindsey (Connor) Preston, Bayly Jones and “adopted family” Tim and Erica Zick and
their 3 daughters.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lisle and Myrl Blackbourn; his brother, Lisle Blackbourn Jr. and
his wife, Shirley; and by his loving wife, Lynn (Huschka) Blackbourn.
The family received guests from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on June 4, 2022 (Saturday) at SCHNEIDER
FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Charlie’s in-laws,
Brad and Sally Huschka, who became very close to Charlie the past year. If desired, memorial donations
can be made to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, 8051 Arco Corporate Dr. Suite 300,

GSPCI 2022 SPRING HUNTING TESTS
SUBMITTED BY: PERRY DLUGIE
GSPCI 2022 Spring Hunting Tests, April 2 and 3, 2022
The members of the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Illinois rallied together to host both of our
spring hunting tests on a single day. With unusually low handler participation plaguing the area clubs
this spring, GSPCI decided that it would be more efficient for everyone to hold Saturday’s test in the
morning followed by Sunday’s in the afternoon.
Adding to the challenge was our decision to use
a continuous course for our seventeen gunning
braces. However, even with a midday period
of rain, our judges and team of gunners kept
everyone moving along and completed both
tests by late afternoon.
Congratulations to all the handlers, judges and
club members for putting together another
successful weekend’s worth of hunting tests.

AKC COMMUNICATIONS
CHANGES TO AKC POINTING BREED FIELD TRIALS - MAY 2022
Performance Events Department
Date: May 18, 2022
To: All Clubs Licensed to Hold AKC Pointing Breed Field Trials
Subject: Changes to AKC Pointing Breed Field Trials
This communication is to inform your club of several changes impacting AKC Pointing Breed Field
Trials. Not all these changes will be of interest to all clubs but you should be aware of the options that are
available. Please note that the effective dates vary depending on the change.
1. FDSB Registration Papers
The AKC Board reviewed its policy on dogs registered by the Field Dog Stud Book (FDSB), which
has been purchased by the United Kennel Club (UKC). Since the AKC does not register pointing
breeds based on their UKC registration papers, the Board in November 2021 voted to stop registering
dogs based on their FDSB registration papers effective July 1, 2022. At their April meeting, the
Board agreed with a staff recommendation to refine this policy to state that the AKC will not register
dogs based on their FDSB registration papers if the registration papers are issued after July 1, 2022.
2. 60 Minute Derby Stakes
This is a change to allow 60-minute derby stakes at the option of the host club. The length of the
derby stake must be stated in the premium. Previously derby stakes could not be run longer than 45
minutes. This change becomes effective June 1, 2022. (Procedure 1-B, Derby Stakes)
3. Roading Behind the Gallery
This is a change to allow roading of dogs behind the gallery at the option of the host club. Previously
roading was allowed at the option of the host club if the trial lasted more than three days. Clubs that do
not want to allow roading shall state this in the premium. This change becomes effective June 1, 2022.
(Procedure 6-Q, Roading Behind the Gallery)
4. Grand Field Champion Titles Followed by a Number
This is a change to provide for a number to be added after the Grand Field Champion (GFC) title or
the Grand Amateur Field Champion (GAFC) title indicating the number of times a dog has met the
GFC or GAFC criteria. Grand points earned back to the introduction of Grand stakes in 2014 will be
credited toward this title. This change will become effective September 1, 2022. Updated title
certificates will be issued at that time. (Chapter 14, Section 7. Grand Field Championship)
5. Regional Championship Stakes and Titles
This is an expansion of AKC’s Pointing Breed Field Trial program to provide Regional
Championship stakes. The highlights of the Regional Championship stakes are –
SHORTHAIR JOURNAL PAGE
14
• A Regional Championship must be run as a Grand Limited stake. This means each brace must be
run for a minimum of one hour and all dogs entered must meet the Limited stake qualification.
• There must be a minimum of 13 starters for the stake to count as a Regional Championship. If
there are less than 13 starters, the stake reverts to a regular Grand Limited stake.
• The winner (1st place) of a Regional Championship stake will earn a Regional Champion title.
• There shall be four Regional Championship prefix titles – Regional Field Champion (RFC),
Regional Amateur Field Champion (RAFC), Regional Walking Field Champion (RWFC) and
Regional Amateur Walking Field Champion (RWAFC). Dogs that win more than one Regional
Championship of the same type shall have a number added after the title (RFC#).
• Dogs that place in Regional Championship stakes shall earn points under the regular point
schedule. If a dog is not a FC or AFC, the points shall be credited toward these titles. If the dog
is a FC or AFC, the points shall be credited toward the Grand Field Champion or Grand Amateur
Field Champion titles.
Scheduling and Applying for Regional Championship Stakes
• Each Parent Club that has been approved to hold a National Championship Field Trial will be
granted the right to hold Regional Championship stakes, with the number indexed off the breeds
participation in the sport. The Performance Events department will determine the number of
Regional Championship stakes per Parent Club.
• Parent Clubs may hold Regional Championship stakes under their name or may designate local
specialty clubs to hold Regional Championship stakes. Parent Clubs are not obligated to utilize
all their Regional Championship stakes.
• Regional Championship stakes hosted by a Parent Club or a local specialty club may be open to
their breed, or it may be open to all breeds. Host clubs may not open the event to a select group
of breeds unless permission is obtained from the Performance Events Department.
• Each Regional Championship stake will have its own event number. A Regional Championship
may be held in conjunction with a local field trial, in which case the club shall submit two event
applications – one for the local trial and one for the Regional Championship stake.
• Regional Championship stakes must be applied for on a special application form which can be
found on the AKC website.
• It is expected that Parent Clubs will provide for Regional Championship stakes that serve all
segments of the sport – All-Age/Gun Dog; Open/Amateur; Horseback/Walking; and all regions of
the country where practical.
• Clubs may submit regional championship event applications after July 4, 2022.
More complete details regarding Regional Championship stakes can be found on the AKC website.
6. Gunners Can Ride ATVs/UTVs at Field Trials & Hunting Tests
This is a change to allow gunners to ride ATVs/UTVs when gunning on course is required. This
change applies to both Field Trials and Hunting Tests at the option of the host club, provided land use

IN ACTION!
BY: BECKY FEIGH
In 2022 AKC will hold 5 AKC Meet The Breed events across the US. The first one of the year was located
in Tampa. Florida. On Apr. 23 & 24 a dedicated group of GSP owners descended on the Tampa Conven-
tion Center to represent the breed at the AKC Meet The Breed Event. The event was open to the public to
come see and learn about over a 100 breeds that were represented at the event. The event also featured
various dogs in action demonstrations. The GSPs attending did not disappoint their adoring fans. Lots
of free kisses were given out in exchange for back scratches and belly rubs. The GSPCA would like to
thank GSPCA Members Diann Fisk, Steve Herman, Bonnie McLaurin, Carrie Morris, and Greg Sorrell,
Ward Myers- president of the Central Florida GSP Club, Pearce Daley and Kimberly Boyette for taking
time out of their busy schedules to bring dogs for the event. If you are a interested in bringing a great

New Puppy Buyer Program
Are you planning to have puppies? Then
this may be a program you would like to
participate in!
The GSPCA Board of Directors approved
a membership initiative for new puppy
buyers. GSPCA Member Breeders have
the opportunity to provide their new puppy
buyers a complimentary year of a GSPCA
Membership!!
Here are a few guidelines, which we wanted
to keep fairly minimal to keep the program
easy to administer and offer:
All Breeders must be a GSPCA member in
good standing. The new owner must not have
been a prior member of GSPCA.
To participate in this program, breeders
should submit the application(s) which can be
downloaded on the website and submitted by
mail to the membership chair.
Applications must be submitted by mail by
the breeder within six months of whelp date.
Applications must be accompanied by a
copy of the puppy’s AKC litter registration.
All breeders listed must be members of the
GSPCA to participate in this program. Program
effective September 1, 2016.

AKC CODE OF SPORTSMANSHIP
PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC’s birth.
Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sec-
tors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsman-
ship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful
to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.
• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.
• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well
as winning and losing with grace.
• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by inject-
ing personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior.
• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.
• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.
• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that
the judge’s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs.
• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.
• The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred
dogs.
• Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the
merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.
• Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.
• Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.
• Sportsmen are willing to share honest & open appraisals of both the strengths & weaknesses of their
breeding stock.
• Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them.
• Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.
• Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in
the sport.

ON POINT – CONVERSATION ON DEVELOPING
OUR COLLECTIVE EYE FOR OUR BREED
RECONCILING THE LINES OF THE TOPLINE.
BY: CHAR RUTAR
As ‘Conformation Contributor’ I enjoy asking questions that hope-
fully spark conversation. Ideally conversation through which we
mentor each other and all learn something in the process. In this
issue we focus on the mainstay of a dog’s structure – in many ways
the cornerstone of the breed’s silhouette and thus Breed Type1 – the
topline. It’s impossible to write a word picture, i.e. a Breed Standard,
that produces an identical picture in every observer’s mind leaving
nothing open to question and interpretation. There are always terms
that can be perplexing. I’m constantly curious to learn how others
resolve confusing descriptions pertaining to what a German Short-
haired Pointer should look like. So in the Neck, Topline, Body section
of our Standard; how do GSP breeders and exhibitors put their ideal
dog together despite terms some may find contradictory? Our illus-
trated Standard2 is a great help, and I’ve gathered comments from
GSP fanciers to help flesh out the words.
It is easy to understand that the topline, or more Underneath it all every canine has the tendency for

hips should fall slightly in a graceful curve toward
the tail, yet the tail is set high and firm?
The goal here is not to criticize our written Stand-
ard or call for it to be changed. Rather we want to
develop some common understanding of canine
anatomy, how it affects physical ability and perfor-
mance. We are training our eye to appreciate the
written word as it applies to our Breed Type.
We might think the arch over the loin comes from Our Illustrated Standard2 has the answer very sim-

balance, and no excesses or extremes. Yes, there
is a rise over the loin caused by underlying bone
structure but driven by good quality muscling. This
may cause a deviation in a line drawn by a sharpie
along the topline, but not detract from slight rise in
a straight line drawn from the root of the tail to the
top of the withers. Some might consider this un-
attractive, and it certainly should not evolve into a
roached back. The rise over the loin is slight and
created more by muscle than bone.

the tail. We seem to have the greatest difference of
opinion here at the set of the tail. Funny, but there
may be two very different reasons for this. Field en-
thusiasts who prize a “12 O’Clock tail” on point, and
show exhibitors who prize the flash and elegance of
the high set tail agree on preferring the tail higher
with the croup flatter.

natural pH or flora. If used on an irritated or dam- ritation to healthy skin cells. Ears contain very
aged ear, it could cause excessive pain and possi- sensitive tissue, and extended use of hydrogen per-
bly more severe damage to sensitive tissues and oxide could eventually lead to damage of the ear
the ear drum. itself. Stick to veterinarian-approved cleaners.
