MANAGING AN EPILEPTIC PERFORMANCE DOG

A SUCCESS STORY.
BY ©PAMELA K SILVERMAN JULY 2022

When my beloved German Shorthaired
Pointer, Wyatt, was diagnosed with
idiopathic epilepsy several months shy
of his third birthday I was devasted.

This is the story of my journey with Wyatt who is a
very successful performance dog notwithstanding
this awful disease and the medications he needs
to control his seizures. I am delighted to report
at the outset of this narrative, that Wyatt will be
competing for his Utility Dog Excellent Obedience
Title (UDX) and an Excellent Agility Title in the
coming months. I write this story to encourage
others with a beloved epileptic performance dog
to keep going so long as your dog’s seizures are
somewhat controlled. Do not give up as I almost

the obedience ring, we came back to try again. This
year Wyatt finished his Utility Title (UD) and we
plan to go on for a UDX. We continue to compete in
agility because it makes Wyatt so happy.

What a dog! My beloved partner works with glee
almost every day and he continues to stay fit and
happy as a six year old. We run three miles togeth-

joy when I put on my running shoes. His seizures
are extremely infrequent for the time being and
maybe we will be lucky, and Wyatt will live out a
full and happy life. If you have an epileptic per-
formance partner who loves to work and you are
able to control his or her seizures with the right
balance of medications , then do not give up. Keep
working and give your partner a full and active
life. I am so glad I did not give up and give in to my
worries and fears.

for social media, we asked Emma what she uses

post about wins. Being young, we were interested
in what she thought was the most important thing
about the GSP; Emma advised that she thought
temperament and health testing were the most
important.

To conclude our chat, I wanted to know what more
information she wanted to learn about GSPs. Emma
indicated that she wanted to know more about
hunting and tips and techniques for training. She
also was hoping that the GSPCA could do more post-
ing that would be juniors oriented. (Note taken!).

NATIONAL SPECIALTY WEEK:

LEARN . . . LOVE . . . LAUGH

BY: CHAR RUTAR

There are winners and losers every
year during GSPCA National Specialty
week. Contrary to popular belief, there
are actually far more winners than los-
ers, and it has little to do with ribbons

The winners come with open minds because they
know they will never learn all there is to know
about the GSP breed and its world. Winners are
wise enough to realize some of their store of breed
knowledge may be out of date. The winners are
‘glass half full’ folks who absolutely know they will
experience moments that expand their already
considerable love and admiration for the breed.
Winners look forward each year to the chance to
laugh out loud at the amazing crazy things our
dogs and the people who adore them can get up to.

We won’t dwell too much on the losers; some of said enrichment. We hand out our ‘Veteran’ and
