As we welcome the arrival of fall, our pets are likely relieved to escape the sweltering heat of summer. While the cooler weather is a welcome change, it brings with it a unique set of hazards for our furry friends. This article aims to remind you of these fall-related dangers and provide essential tips to ensure your pet's safety and well-being during this season. Secure School Supplies: With the return of the school season, households often have an abundance of school supplies such as glue sticks, pencils, and markers. While these items are generally considered to have low toxicity for pets, ingestion can lead to gastrointestinal problems or blockages. To prevent such mishaps, keep these school supplies out of your pet's reach. Beware of Rodenticides and Cold Weather Poisons: As the temperature drops, rodents seek refuge indoors, leading to increased use of rat and mouse poisons in the fall. These products are highly toxic to pets and can be tempting to them. If you must use these poisons, exercise extreme caution and store them in places inaccessible to your pets. Engine Coolant Safety: Fall often prompts car owners to change their vehicle's engine coolant. It's crucial to note that ethylene glycol-based coolants are highly toxic to pets. To keep your furry companions safe, store these coolants away from them and promptly clean up any spills. Consider switching to propylene glycol-based coolants, which are less toxic. Watch Out for Wildlife: During the autumn season, snakes prepare for hibernation, increasing the risk of snake bites to curious pets in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a responsible pet owner, familiarize yourself with the types of venomous snakes in your area and where they are likely to be found. This knowledge will help you keep your pets away from danger zones. FALL SAFETY FOR YOUR PET ALOE VERA - Symptoms: Vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea BIRD of PARADISE Symptoms: Mild nausea, vomiting, drowsiness CARNATION - Symptoms: Mild gastrointestinal signs, mild dermatitis Submitted by S. Correction: CH Geselle N Ghostmar 9 - V Phat Onyx, was missing the CH before her name in the Eastern Futurity on the inside front cover in the October issue. CAMOMILE - Symptoms: Contact dermatitis, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, allergic reactions. DAISY - Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, incoordination, dermatitis HYDRANGEA - Symptoms: Vomiting, depression, diarrhea IVY - Symptoms: Oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing. SAGO PALM - Symptoms: Vomiting, melena, icterus, increased thirst, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, bruising, coagulopathy, liver damage, liver failure, death. TULIP - Symptoms: Vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation. Mushroom Awareness: Fall marks the season for mushrooms. While the majority of mushrooms are harmless, a small percentage can be highly toxic and pose a serious threat to pets if ingested. Since distinguishing toxic from non-toxic mushrooms can be challenging, it's safest to keep your pets away from areas where mushrooms are growing. For more information, refer to resources on poisonous plants. These safety tips aim to raise awareness and provide practical guidance to pet owners for protecting their beloved companions from the unique hazards of the fall season. Being proactive and taking appropriate precautions will ensure that your pets enjoy a safe and healthy autumn. 53

Thank you for asking me back as the Weimaraner Club of America Breeder’s Education Chair. Previously, along with my co-chair, the BEC developed and produced the following presentations which are all available on the WCA website under Breeders Education www.weimaranerclubofamerica.org • The Breed Standard Presentation, which is also used for Judges Education • The WCA Illustrated Standard • The Art & Science of Breeding • Whelp Help • Creation of the Breeders Briefcase with monthly articles Having accomplished that, I was hesitant to accept this position, feeling the climate in the dog world had changed as well as being able to garner any information needed on the internet. I wasn’t sure if this committee was warranted any longer. However, here I am. It is my hope to bring forward the benefit of mentorship so that we can all become preservation breeders. My goal at this point is to bring you articles of interest relevant to you as breeders. I would also like to build the committee over time so that it can continue into the future. I welcome the opportunity to serve in this capacity. You can reach me at [email protected] with any suggestions and/or questions. WCA Breeder Referral Expecting Puppies? by Billie Thompson A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service. A few things you might like to know about this service. • I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies. • The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and some have also done a little research on the breed. • The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup, though I encourage them to consider greater distances. • The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder. • If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for any local clubs nearby as well. This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed on the list. Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed! Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state, email and phone number. Please send this information to [email protected]. Thank you, and best of luck with your litters! Billie Thompson WCA Breeder Referral • [email protected] 58

Marshall’s Law is the creation of Tomoyo Pitcher and her husband Roger. The inspiration for Marshall was their beloved Weimaraner Hunter, who lived a long and happy life until almost 16 years of age, with his Boston Terrier little brother Oscar and big sister Nemo. Life with a Weimaraner is a never-ending source of great comic material but also plenty of touching moments as well. Tomoyo draws the strip, comes up with the ideas; Roger suggests a punchline now and again and also makes lunch. Tomoyo is also an internationally licensed artist, her artwork appearing on products such as jigsaw puzzles, garden flags, mugs, signs and other giftware. Samples of art can be found at WWW.TOMOYOPITCHER.COM 74
