Expecting Puppies?

by Billie Thompson

A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to
take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service.
A few things you might like to know about this service.
• I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders

have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies.
• The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and

some have also done a little research on the breed.
• The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup,

though I encourage them to consider greater distances.
• The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a

reputable breeder.
• If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for

any local clubs nearby as well.
This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on
the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed
on the list.
Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed!
Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state,
email and phone number.
Please send this information to [email protected].
Thank you, and best of luck with your litters!

From the beginning, I was drawn to this lovely boy ....and I kept thinking I shouldn’t
keep a boy, but it was LOVE.. Flash finished his AKC Championship at 6 months
and 3 days of age in one show! We continued onto his GCH and showed at the
Western Regional going BOS Specialty. All five days with five, 5 point major wins
over many well established specials and a OHRBIS at 9 months old (Owner
Handler Reserve Best in Show). At 9 months, Flash ran his NAVHDA Natural
Ability and received a max score of 112 points with ease. Both Flash and I loved
field work, so we immediately started working towards his Senior Hunter and
NAVHDA Utility Test. We are thrilled with what this young boy has accomplished
and continues to do.

Flash was invited to the esteemed Royal Canine as well as Westminster dog shows
and was awarded BOS (Best Opposite Sex) over top nationally ranked
Weimaraners. In 2019, Flash finished in the “Top 20” in All breed and Breed, as well
as “Top 10” Owner Handler Series and was exclusively Breeder/Owner handled and
trained. Flash finished 2020 #4 Breed and All Breed, shown by Susie and Jorge

A technique borrowed from human medicine allows veterinarians to
save damaged corneas in pets and horses

“If we use crosslinking, we can stabilize those corneas quite nicely and stop that process in its
tracks,” Stephanie Pumphrey said. “It helps us save eyes that we’d otherwise be unable to.”

Photo: Ingimage
The cornea—the clear lens at the front of eye—is the part of the eye most vulnerable
to trauma in animals. Dogs with flat faces and bulgy eyes, such as bulldogs and pugs,
are especially prone to bumping into things and accidentally scratching their corneas.
Corneal injuries and disease can escalate quickly, often leading to the loss of the eye
or the need for extensive and possibly scarring surgery in animals. Recently, though,
veterinary ophthalmologists at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center have started
using corneal crosslinking—a treatment borrowed from human medicine—to help
spare animals’ eyes or avoid surgery.
Corneal crosslinking was developed to treat a condition called keratoconus in people,
said veterinary ophthalmologist Stephanie Pumphrey, V08, an assistant professor
at Cummings School. In this condition, the cornea is not quite rigid enough, so it
droops—changing the cornea’s shape. This affects a person’s vision because the
cornea no longer focuses light the way it’s supposed to, said Pumphrey.

Page 16

A corneal transplant was once the only way to restore sight in people with
keratoconus. Then researchers discovered that they could bolster a sagging cornea by
applying eye drops of riboflavin—a bright-yellow B vitamin—and then exposing the
eye to ultraviolet light.

“The riboflavin absorbs the light and produces energy,” Pumphrey said, “and that
energy affects the surrounding collagen, which is the protein that makes up most of
the cornea.” Collagen fibers in the cornea end up binding to the ones next to them,
“forging these strong crosslinks”—hence the name of the therapy.

The result is that the cornea becomes a lot more rigid, said Pumphrey. “If you take
a piece of cornea that’s not crosslinked, it’s floppy—like a boiled spaghetti noodle,”
she said. “But a crosslinked piece becomes stiffer, like an uncooked noodle.”

Animals don’t get keratoconus, but a handful of veterinary practices across the
country are using the crosslinking approach to treat animals with corneal ulcers or
infections.

The only veterinarians offering the therapy in New England, Tufts ophthalmologists
use corneal crosslinking most often in treating dogs and horses with “melting” ulcers.
In this eye condition, a wound to the cornea ends up causing the surrounding tissue
to start to break down. “There’s usually a green or yellow look to the cornea and the
tissue is just sort of dissolving in front of your eyes,” Pumphrey said.

“If we use crosslinking, we can stabilize those corneas quite nicely and stop that
process in its tracks,” she said. “It helps us save eyes that we’d otherwise be unable
to, and it also can get pets off medications sooner, which can be a big help for pet
owners.”

Crosslinking may also improve surgical options for some animals. A severe ulcer
usually requires surgery to patch the cornea. Typically, grafts are taken from the
opaque whites of the eyes. That’s because, unlike corneal tissue, it has lots of
blood vessels, which a transplant needs to successfully integrate with a cornea
under the assault of a melting ulcer. But since crosslinking helps makes the corneal
tissue resistant to degradation and has antibacterial and antifungal effects, it allows
veterinarians to use more desirable, transparent grafts instead.

Animals undergoing crosslinking usually only require sedation, although some are
briefly put under general anesthesia, particularly if there’s damaged tissue that needs
to be removed. Pumphrey reported that this aspect of crosslinking can especially
improve care for eye problems in Cummings School’s largest patients.
“With horses, we worry a lot about anesthesia because things can always go wrong
when you’re dropping a horse and having it get back up again,” Pumphrey said. “But
we often can do crosslinking as a standing procedure in horses, which eliminates
those risks.”

A rescue Story

submitted by Becky Weimar | [email protected]

On August 26, 2021, the SPCA in Dallas contacted Weimaraner Rescue Texas to ask
for assistance in placing 46 Weimaraners that a breeder had surrendered. Several
rescue groups took in the dogs for placement: Weimaraner Rescue Texas, Arkansas
Weimaraner Rescue, Mile High Weimaraner Rescue, Grey Ghost Weimaraner Rescue
and Oregon Weimaraner Rescue. The Weimaraner Foundation Fund was glad to be
able to assist with the large expenditures needed for veterinary care. The following is
the story of one Weimaraner who was cared for by the Weimaraner Rescue community.

LUNA & Her Puppies

As we were on vacation, we were asked if we would be able to foster a pregnant female
from a Texas Breeder shutdown. We said yes and Luna joined us on the very day we
returned home. Before the puppies arrived, Luna lived with us for about a month.

10/4/2021 the babies arrived (prematurely)!
During her labor of 10 hours, Luna gave
birth to 6 beautiful puppies (2 males, 4
females). They came out weighing 5-8oz.
After delivery, Luna had a tough time
drinking and eating, so we took turns
staying up with her. Momma Luna was
unable to produce enough milk for her
puppies on her own due to her "eating
strike" for about 60 hours. We therefore
supplemented the puppies' milk around the
clock for the first five days.

Luna and her babies were rushed to the veterinarian clinic to be checked out. After
getting pumped full of IV, momma pulled through. The puppies did great on their first
big outing and were so happy to be able to nurse on momma Luna 24/7! They grew
like weeds!

Momma Luna and all the puppies have now been adopted into loving fur-ever homes
across America. The litter theme was Harry Potter. We are all keeping up with the
adorable puppies & momma Luna on a private Facebook group.

2021 National Field Championships &

Field Futurity
December 4 to Conclusion
Lake Murray Field Trial Grounds

Ardmore, OK

Hooray, the 2021 WCA National Field Trial is in the books. We have a new National
Grand Champion, Indy and a new National Grand Amateur Champion, Deke. Indy has
been knocking on the door for the past two years and broke through in a big way in
2021. Hearty congratulations to owner John Bonner and handler, Diane Vater. Deke
is rapidly coming into his own for owner/handler Pat Gannon, who at 75 years young
may be the eldest handler ever to win the NAFC, way to go Pat and Deke.

Quality judges give our event credibility. NFC/Field Futurity judges Sherry Ebert and
Chris Corliss along with NAFC/National Open Derby/National Open Puppy judges
Tania Campbell and Tommy Negrete were all attentive and focused on our dogs. A
huge thank you to all four judges.

Our professional trainers and handlers set a high standard for the dogs in their strings
– a standard we amateurs strive to meet. Thank you to Diane Vater and Chuck Cooper,
welcome and thank you to new pro Sean Van Kooten and thanks to Todd Yamamoto
for flying in to handle a few Futurity and Derby dogs. We hope to see you all next year
with even more gray dogs.

The logistics of the National Field Trial are far reaching. From the kitchen to the
banquet, birds, dogs to line on time, and horses. There are a lot of moving parts. Tamra
McGaughy once again kept us well fed, Kory McGaughy shouldered the bird planting
chores single handedly this year – well done big guy! Terry Zigalinski and Lindsay had
horses ready to go mornings and afternoons, thanks for your hard work. Steph Meyer
once again ran the dog wagon, seemingly always nearby when needed and supplied
with beverages and snacks for all riders. Thank you Steph for always being there with
a smile on your face. Betsy Letzo stepped up this year to coordinate the banquet. The
room was ready and the food was good, thank you Betsy. Thanks to Kay Walker for

National Grand Championship (21 Starters)
Judges: Chris Corliss & Sherry Ebert
Stake Manager & Scribe: Jeff Brown

The 72nd running of the Weimaraner
Club of America National Grand
Championship took place on December
4th and 5th at Lake Murray State Park
in Ardmore Oklahoma. The judges were
Sherry Ebert and Chris Corliss and they
watched twenty-one contestants. While
the weather for the stake was forecasted
to be pleasant for humans but a bit warm
for the canines, cloud cover for much of the two days made it more comfortable for
those running. There was no rain either day and the grounds were dry and dusty with
few opportunities for dogs or horses to water. However, there seems to have been
precipitation during the growing season because the grass was unusually high in many
parts of the course making it hard to see dogs off the few mowed paths.

Day 1

Brace 1:

Cage (Diane Vater) & Paxton (Sean VanKooten)

The brace broke away at 8:30 with both dogs working to the front in sight of the

handlers. When they reached the gravel road where the course jogs right, Cage made

a move forward and was out of sight while Paxton established a closer working range.

At the 9-minute mark, the handlers approached a stand of cedars that marks a turn in

the course and a couple of quail flushed followed by Cage, ending his day. Paxton

continued to work around the course until he had a find at the 43-minute mark in the

edge headed back toward the road across from the airfield. Paxton finished the hour

working at his established pace. Page 20

Brace 2: Maga (Sean VanKooten) & Robber (Diane Vater)
This brace broke away at 9:35. Both dogs worked well for the handlers, each making
pleasing casts near the bear claw. After they made the big turn marking the outer most
point on the course, they split up at the landmark huge oak tree, with Maga continuing
on the course with her handler and Robber making a big cast to the right. Robber was
found standing with style at the 12-minute mark, and Diane worked the bird with all in
order. Moving on from that point Robber made a sweeping move through tall grass and
went on point at the 15-minute mark at a brush pile, but Diane was unable to find a bird
and took a non-productive. Maga continued to work ahead and when Robber caught
up to her at the 21-minute mark, she was standing on the trail. Robber’s momentum
flushed a quail, and he was picked up for failing to honor and Maga was awarded a
find. Working alone, Maga continued to work at gun dog range for her handler and
produced another find at 48 minutes.

Brace 3: Deke (Pat Gannon) & Squiggly (Chuck Cooper)
Both dogs worked close to the handlers. At the 35-minute mark, Chuck picked
Squiggly up—not her day. Deke continued on with no action and was picked up by Pat
at the 48-minute mark.

Brace 4: Spur (Wayne Cowles) & Charlie (Sean VanKooten)
This brace featured the most bird contact of the stake up to this point, with both dogs
working at a gun dog pace, and consequently working near one another. Spur started
the action with a find at the popular ‘turning point’ cedars, with Charlie backing, and
all was in order. The brace moved ahead together and crossed the road in front of
the oil tanks, and for the first time, split up. Spur stopped at the edge of a thicket at
18 minutes, but as Wayne attempted to produce a bird Spur lost some intensity, and
Wayne relocated his dog to no avail, and took his first non-productive. Spur caught up
to Charlie at the 25-minute mark, with Charlie standing a bird off the trail just past the
duck pond; all in order with Charlie recording her first find and Spur his first back. That
action was repeated at the 37-minute mark. The brace continued to hunt for the next 15
minutes without result, then split up again and Charlie was rewarded with another find
at the 53-minute mark. As the hour was ending, both dogs went on point in a thicket
above the lake on the way to the bear claw. After Wayne attempted to work the bird,
Sean elected to take the non-productive and move Charlie on before Wayne relocated
Spur. Spur ended up with his second non-productive of the hour just as time ran out.

Brace 5: Bae (Sean VanKooten) & Indy (Diane Vater)
This brace provided the biggest runs of day one. The brace broke away headed toward
the bear claw, and both dogs were very active and out sight for brief spells as the
handlers worked them around the turn. At the landmark oak, Bae continued ahead
through the cut on the left and Indy made a sweeping move to the right, taking him
out of sight for several minutes. Bae stood a bird near the trail at the 23-minute mark,
all in order. Nearly simultaneously, Indy was found standing a bird at the end of his
cast, all in order. Both dogs move ahead at a pleasing pace, and Indy was found at
the 37-minute mark standing a bird with Bae backing. At the 47-minute mark Indy
showed impressive style on his third find, with tail high, once again with Bae backing.
Bae finished at a steady pace but without further bird work. Indy finished the last 13
minutes driving ahead on the course, finishing out of sight, until Diane showed her dog
to the judges just past Weaver’s thicket.

Page 21

Brace 6: Sadie (Paul Guay) & Otto (Diane Vater)
The first day ended with this brace, starting on the portion of course three heading back
toward camp and Sadie had a find at the 8-minute mark. At the 11-minute mark, as the
brace reached course one Diane picked Otto up. At the 16-minute mark Sadie stopped
in the grass just to the left of the trail past the oil tanks, but Paul was unable to produce
a bird. Paul relocated Sadie with no luck and took a non-productive. Sadie ran out the
hour working at a close gun dog pace.

Day 2
Brace 7: Gabby (Diane Vater) & Graf (Sean VanKooten)
Brace 7 broke away at 8 am of the second day. This brace featured a contrast in styles,
with Gabby showing a lot of run and Graf displaying a closer gun dog pace. Graf
started almost immediately going on point at the 5-minute mark beside the break
away trail, but it produced only a dead bird. At the 18-minute mark Graf had a stop-
to flush on a quail on the trail. Then at the 33-minute mark Graf established point but
lost some intensity while Sean attempted to produce the bird. After relocating, Graf
regained staunchness in a very stylish find. Graf had another nice find near the trail at
the 47-minute mark. After laying down a big run, Gabbi finally was rewarded with a
find on the trail at the 49-minute mark and ended the hour with a find in brush at the
57-minute mark.

Brace 8: Lambeau (Sean VanKooten) & Slim (Mike Wiacek)
This brace featured another contrast in styles. Lambeau ran big off the break away and
was in contention for the first 10 minutes but was largely out of sight until the tracker
was pulled at the 20-minute mark. Slim worked closer in and had a find at a popular
spot just before the airfield, then again at the 49-minute mark.

Brace 9: Rhyme (Sean VanKooten) & Turbo (Chuck Cooper)
The third brace of the second morning, ended very similarly to the third brace of day
1. Within the first minute, Chuck picked up Turbo. Rhyme was given more time, but it
was not her day and Sean picked her up at the 20-minute mark.

Brace 10: Dillon (Frank Sommer) & Nitro (Sean VanKooten)
After the lunch break, this brace started out with both dogs working close in front of
the handlers. Dillon had a find at the 10-minute mark at the cedars that mark the first
turn on course 1, with Nitro backing. After crossing the road in front of the oil tanks
Dillon had a find at the 20-minute mark in the brush. Nitro failed to honor and was
dismissed. At this point, working alone, Dillon adopted a bigger run and was out of
sight for a lengthy spell. However, he was found ahead on the course at the 47-minute
mark and handled the bird all in order. He finished the hour resuming his big forward
run.

Brace 11: Lucky (Diane Vater) & Bye
The final brace, Lucky started off putting down a nice forward race. After 30 minutes he
was found standing, but Diane was unable to produce a bird and took a non-productive.
He resumed his big run but was out of sight long enough that Diane pulled the tracker
at the 45-minute mark.
Call backs: The judges asked to see five dogs in no particular order: Indy, Dillon, Gabby,
Graf, and Charlie. All of the dogs completed the retrieve to the judges’ satisfaction.

National Field Futurity (7 Starters)
Judges: Chris Corliss & Sherry Ebert
Stake Manager: Kim Burnell
The Field Futurity was run under cold and windy conditions, with scenting conditions
apparently rather poor.
Brace 1: Claire (Todd Yamamoto) & Temu (Carly Devine)
Both dogs appeared somewhat confused and befuddled by the grounds and conditions.
Neither dog ventured far from the handlers and no birds were produced.
Brace 2: Larkin (Todd Yamamoto) & Talon (Kim Burnell)
Talon and Larkin showed well to the front but neither dog was able to produce a bird.
Brace 3: Sierra (Kim Burnell) & Rhyme (Carey Killion)
Sierra and Rhyme ran well together both making an occasional impressive independent
move. Both dogs had bird contact at 25 minutes, with Sierra first on the scene.
Brace 4: Rubi (Esteri Hinman) & Bye
Rubi was perhaps hindered by the lack of a bracemate and appeared reluctant to get too
far away from Esteri. Rubi was unable to produce a bird in the half hour.

National Grand Amateur Championship (21 Starters)
Judges: Thomas Negrete & Tania Campbell
Stake Manager & Scribe: Chuck Cooper

Thank you to the bird planter. And to the dog wagon and kitchen crew for making sure
the right dogs were in the right places and we had warm drinks and warm biscuits out
on the course.

Brace 1: Charlie (Tom Koehler) & Slim (Mike Wiacek)
Slim was up at 10 for chasing. Charlie had finds at 25, 30 and 40. All with good style.
She ran a short gun dog throughout the brace.

Brace 2: Dillon (Frank Sommer) & Bae (Justin Buehring)
Dillon’s scout found him at 9 on a stylish point. All in order. But he was later lost from
judgement, and the tracker was pulled.
Bae finds at 20 and 38, and an non-productive at time. She ran a big to medium gun
dog race.

Brace 3: Lucky (Chris Meyer) & Robber (Mary Brown)
Robber came with his running shoes on. He was seen little after the breakaway, and
was eventually lost from judgement. Lucky was also running. He was hard driving and
fast, but rough to handle. He had one find at 55 with all in order.

Brace 4: Rhyme (Carey Killion) & Spur (Wayne Cowles)
Spur stopped to flush at 12 with Rhyme honoring. Wayne shot the gun before Carey
was off her horse and the horse reared, causing her to do a premature dismount. Carey
was fine and they all went on. Spur bumped and chased on a relocate later in the brace,
thus ending his bid. Rhyme had a good find a at 32. She hunted at short to medium
range throughout her hour.

Brace 5: Gabby (Frank Sommer) & Lambeau (Justin Buehring)
These two were doing a really good job. Both were hard driving big gun dogs that kept
their scouts busy. Gabby had a stylish find 29 with Lambeau honoring. Sadly, both
dogs were up at 48 for chasing.

Brace 6: Indy (John Bonner) & Graf (Tom Koehler)
This should have been the brace to watch with the first and second place dogs from the
open going head to head. They started well both hunting hard. Indy had a pretty point
at 28. John looked and looked, but could not produce the bird. He relocated and the
bird flew right at Indy’s face and he caught it by one foot. A little further on, Graf also
came to grief on a quail.

The second day dawned more pleasant with sunny skies and a little warmer temperatures.
Brace 7: Cage (Mary Brown) & Otto (Mike Wiacek)
This pair reached out and hit everything. Sadly there were no birds for their efforts.

Brace 8: Paxton (Justin Buehring) & Sadie (Paul Guay)
Paxton ran a medium gun dog race, but only has 2 non-productives, at 5 and 36, to
show for his efforts. Sadie also ran a medium gun dog and had good finds at 34 and 53.

Page 25

Brace 9: Squiggly (Chris Meyer) & Maga (Tom Koehler)
Squiggly ran a medium gun dog race. She had backs at 12 and 19, but no bird work of
her own in the hour. Maga also ran medium race with an np at 12 and stylish finds at
19 and 32.

Brace 10: Turbo (Kim Burnell) & Deke (Pat Gannon)
Turbo was up early for pestering his bracemate. That left Deke with the undivided
attention of both judges for the full 60 minutes. Deke capitalized with finds at 11 and
12 both with great style. He also had non-productives at 22 and 34.

Brace 11: Nitro (Tom Koehler) & Bye
Nitro ran a short and cautious race. He had only a non-productive to show for his
efforts.

National Open Derby (8 Starters)
Judges: Thomas Negrete & Tania Campbell
Stake Manager: Pat Gannon
Scribe: Tom Koehler

This was a near perfect morning for running dogs with temperatures in the low 40’s
under a clear sky.

Brace 1: Lenny (Chuck Cooper) & Clare (Todd Yamamoto)
Both dogs broke away quickly to the front. Lenny produced a bird at 18 minutes but
never pointed. Lenny and Clare worked diligently searching objectives. Clare put up a
bird at 29 minutes but failed to point. Clare worked at fairly short range throughout the
brace while Lenny had the bigger run.

Brace 2: Wyatt (Todd Yamamoto) & B (Mike Wiacek)
This was a productive brace with B pointing stylishly at 5 minutes, Mike produced
the bird. Wyatt had a find at 21 minutes with a very staunch point. Todd was able to
produce the bird. B had a second find just before time and once again Mike got the
bird in the air, all in order. Both dogs hunted and ranged well for the entire 30 minutes.

Brace 3: Forest (Esteri Hinman) & Talon (Kim Burnell)
A strong breakaway by both dogs. Forest and Talon aggressively worked objectives
for the duration of the brace. Forest was found stylishly pointing at 27 minutes. After
considerable hard work, Esteri was able to put the bird in the air. Despite a strong
effort, Talon was unable to find a bird today.

Brace 4: Booker (Todd Yamamoto) & Bye
Booker appeared handicapped by his lack of a bracemate which likely shortened his
run. Booker did pattern well throughout the heat albeit rather close in. No bird was
produced for Booker today.

Brace 5: Onyx (Diane Vater) & Bye
Onyx was clearly the class of this derby. Moving out well to the front with a stylish
find at 19 minutes, Diane easily putting the bird up. Onyx showed excellent range
and efficiently hunted objectives, her efforts were rewarded with a staunch find at 25
minutes and a stylish 3rd point at 27 minutes, birds again in the air in each case.

National Open Walking Puppy (7 Starters)
Judges: Thomas Negrete & Tania Campbell
Acting Stake Manager, Marshall & Scribe: Tom Koehler

The final event of Nationals, Open Walking Puppy was influenced by a very warm day
and tall grass on the out and back course. Some fine prospects put forth tremendous
efforts.

Brace 1: Aspen (Justin Buehring) & Rexx (Marilyn Black)

Both dogs were away strong off the line and showed immediately to the front with
good speed. The cover is tall and these young dogs did what they could with the limited
line of sight. Aspen showing bold left and right opportunities seeking objectives. The
pair finished with a nice showing of boldness and independence.

Brace 2: Silver (Kim Urbani) & Bud (Mike Wiacek)

These two young dogs raced away hard at the breakaway. Each appeared to seeking
opportunities and lines to show their stuff. Bud made casts for objectives and responded
well for his handler. Both dogs finished the brace showing enthusiasm and grit.

Brace 3: Zadarius (Justin Buehring) & Lincoln (Kim Burnell)

Once again both dogs hit the course hard from the breakaway. Zadarius showing early
good ground covering speed. Lincoln handled well for Kim and appeared under control
at all times. Zadarius made multiple casts towards likely objectives.

Page 28

Brace 4: Lancer (Wayne Cowles) & Bye
Today, Lancer was on his own. Early on Lancer showed maturity and independence.
Lancer boldly pushed through the tall grass and blazed paths to likely objectives. This
pup showed a smooth ground covering gait and responded to minimal handling. In the
final seconds of the brace, Lancer executed a very mature stop to flush followed by a
point at nearby cover.

A Message from the

WCA JUNIOR COMMITTEE

Dear WCA members,

The WCA Junior Committee would like to keep a Further Education Scholarship
program going for our Junior members to encourage them to be involved, and to
learn to be the future of our breed.

As some of you may have noticed, the scholarships offered have been provided by
individual donors. Since we no longer have that privilege for the future and the 2022
year coming up, the Junior Committee has been working with the Board of Directors
to develop a Scholarship Fund where WCA members can donate to in order to keep
scholarships sustained in the future. This can be done in a couple of ways. You can
still specifically offer an amount to support a particular category or donate an amount
that would be used over a variety of categories as needed.

So far we do have some areas covered. Field events such as Field Trial Titles, Hunt
Test Titles, and Rating Titles will still have scholarships offered by an individual
donor. $1,000 has been offered to help with Junior Showmanship and Conformation.
We could use some more towards those. $300 has been offered towards Best Junior
Handler at the 2022 National.

We would like to encourage more kids to participate in Obedience/Rally and Agility.
If you are interested in supporting those categories please let me know. If you would
like your donation to go to a specific category please let me know that also.

In addition, our Junior rules provide for a Rosette for year-end top winner and runner
up in Junior Showmanship and certificates to all the other participants. In the last
few years Rosettes have been given to all participants but those were through an
individual’s donations. If you would like to donate to provide rosettes to the other
participants that would also be appreciated but that donation is separate from the
Scholarship Fund. Please do not use the Junior Program Donation button for that, but
contact me to arrange covering those.

Any funds not won during a competition year will be carried over to the next year.

Other Titles for miscellaneous events are covered with certificates and recognition in
the magazine.

To make a Scholarship Donation please go to the WCA Website at https://
weimaranerclubofamerica.org/ and go to the “Make a Payment” box, “Donation”
Box, and then under “Use this donation for” pull down to “WCA Juniors Program.”

Thank you in advance to anyone who would like to support our youth. Please contact
me at my e-mail address for any more information or how to make a donation.

Sincerely,

Barbara Taylor, Chair ([email protected])
and the WCA Junior Committee

REMINDER to local clubs:
We want to see and hear all about your events! Sharing the info with us allows us to
promote it on our social media and in the magazine. Exhibitors and club members also
want to read about your event and see images FROM your events!
When submitting your club's results for any event (field, hunt, show, obedience, agility,
scent etc) please make sure to use the WCA result submission layout and include photos
that are labeled clearly for your event.
There is a results submission flyer to help the club learn what is needed to make your
submissions easy. Email the editor if you need a copy. [email protected]

AKC Scent work
used with permission
akc.org

Fascinating fact: Dogs have a sense of smell that’s between
10,000 and 100,000 times more acute than ours! The sport
of Scent Work celebrates the joy of sniffing, and asks a dog
to sniff to their heart’s content; turning your dog’s favorite
activity into a rewarding game. It is a terrific sport for all
kinds of dogs, and is a wonderful way to build confidence
in a shy dog.

In so many dog sports the handler is in control but this isn’t
true in Scent Work. Neither the dog nor handler knows
where the target odor is hidden. The handler has to rely on the dog, and follow the
dog’s nose to success. In Scent Work, it is the canine who is the star of the show.

The sport of Scent Work is based on the work of professional detection dogs (such as
drug dogs), employed by humans to detect a wide variety of scents and substances.
In AKC Scent Work, dogs search for cotton swabs saturated with the essential oils of
Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress. The cotton swabs are hidden out of sight in a pre-
determined search area, and the dog has to find them. Teamwork is necessary: when
the dog finds the scent, he has to communicate the find to the handler, who calls it out
to the judge.

What is Scent Work?
AKC Scent Work is a sport that mimics the
task of working detection dogs to locate a
scent and communicate to the handler that
the scent has been found. Real-life detection
dogs are trained to search for a variety of
things–drugs, explosives, human remains,
currency, other contraband, living humans
(such as for Search and Rescue), and much
more. AKC Scent Work takes this amazing
working relationship and turns it into a fun
game that any dog can play.

Am I Eligible?
To be eligible to compete in AKC Scent Work, a dog must be:

• Registered with the AKC, or
• Listed with the AKC Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege

(PAL/ILP), or
• Listed with the Canine Partners program, and
• 6 months of age or older.

How a Scent Work Trial Works
Scent Work trials, as with any AKC sport, are organized and held by AKC-Licensed or
Member Clubs. The club is always your first contact regarding specific events.

The official announcement of a club’s event is a called a Premium List. It contains all

Page 47

relevant information regarding the trial, including date, location, classes offered, and
judges–as well as an entry form.

To enter an AKC Scent Work trial, the owner of the dog must submit an official AKC
entry form, which can be found in the premium list. The entry form should be sent
to the trial secretary that is specified in the premium. After the entries have closed,
a program showing the schedule for the judging will be sent to you along with all
relevant information about the trial.

AKC Scent Work Program
The Divisions
AKC Scent Work is broken down into two
divisions. The Odor Search Division, in
which the dog is searching for the odor of
one or more specific essential oils, and the
Handler Discrimination Division, in which
the dog is searching for the scent of their
handler.

The Elements
Searches in AKC Scent Work are completed
in a variety of environments, known as
“Elements.” The Elements in AKC Scent
Work are:

• Container: The target odor is concealed within a container (such as a cardboard
box or briefcase), and the dog must indicate in which container the scent is hidden.

• Interior: The target odor is concealed on or in an object in an indoor search area.
• Exterior: The target odor is concealed on or in an object in an outdoor search area–

this requires the dog to locate the scent despite changing airflow patterns, weather
conditions, and natural distractions.
• Buried: The target odor is concealed within a small container and then buried
beneath sand or water.

The Difficulty Levels
Each element in the Odor Search Division, and the Handler Discrimination Division,
has four difficulty levels: Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Master. Dogs will begin
with the Novice level classes and move up as they earn titles, and may progress through
the elements at different speeds (i.e., a dog may compete in the Novice Interior class
and the Advanced Container class). Factors such as the size of the search area, the
number of hides, whether the number of hides is known or unknown to the handler, and
the maximum height of the hides will change with the difficulty level.

The Odors
The Odor Search Division of AKC Scent Work uses four odors: Birch (Betula lenta),
Anise (Pimpinella anisum), Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), and Cypress (Cupressus
sempevirens). Novice searches are for Birch only, Advanced searches are for Birch
and/or Anise, Excellent searches are for Birch and/or Anise and/or Clove, and Master
searches are for Birch and/or Anise and/or Clove and/or Cypress.

The Detective Class
The Detective Class is the highest level competition in AKC Scent Work–it offers
an integrated search environment with an unknown number of hides in a variety of
elements. The intent of the Detective Class is to emulate as closely as possible the

Page 48

work of a true detection dog. In the Detective Class, the dog is searching for one or
more essential oil odors.

The Qualifying Performance
In AKC Scent Work, handler-dog teams are judged on a qualify/non-qualify basis. The
dog must use their nose to search out the hidden odors, and then alert their handlers
when the odors are detected. Dogs may paw, bark, point with their nose or body, sit, lie
down, or use any other behavior to communicate the location of the odor. The dog is
the star of the Scent Work trial–the handler remains mostly passive, guiding the dog’s
search only when necessary and letting the judge know when the dog has found the
scent.
In order to earn a qualifying leg, the handler-dog team must find and call all hides
in a search area within the time allowed for the class without committing any non-
qualifying faults.

Teams that qualify will then be ranked 1st through 4th, based on fewest number of
faults and then on time.

How Do I Get Started in Scent Work?
Scent Work is a terrific sport, because
you don’t necessarily have to take classes
to become ready to compete at trial. And
because the searches mimic real-life
scenarios, training can be done at home or
in the community. There are many books
and videos to help you get your dog started
in Scent Work.

If you need the discipline of class
environment or a little more expertise, local
Scent Work clubs and many dog training
facilities offer training in Scent Work (or
“Nosework,” as it is sometimes known).
