WCA Breeder Referral
Expecting Puppies?
by Billie Thompson
A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to
take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service.
A few things you might like to know about this service.
• I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders
have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies.
• The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and
some have also done a little research on the breed.
• The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup,
though I encourage them to consider greater distances.
• The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a
reputable breeder.
• If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for
any local clubs nearby as well.
This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on
the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed
on the list.
Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed!
Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state,
email and phone number.
Please send this information to [email protected].
Thank you, and best of luck with your litters!

Gross - My Pet’s Got Ringworm!
What Do I Do?
March 26, 2020 / MORRIS Animal Foundation - Used with permission
Ringworm is a common skin infection in both dogs and cats. The name is a bit
misleading since ringworm is not caused by a worm but by a common fungus found
everywhere in the world. And, many times, the infection is not ring-like at all but can
take on a variety of appearances.
Ringworm infection, or dermatophytosis, can spread from pets to their human
companions. The good news is that ringworm rarely causes serious problems in
animals or their people, and it is both treatable and preventable. As pet owners, it’s
important to know the common signs of ringworm infection as well as understand the
facts about this disease.
Ringworm isn’t just one fungus
Several species of fungi can cause ringworm in pets. In dogs and cats, the majority
of cases are caused by Microsporum canis. Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton
mentagrophytes are responsible for the rest.
Infected pets are generous and like to share with others
Infected pets can transmit ringworm to people or other pets. There have even been
reports of cows, goats, pigs and horses passing ringworm to people!
Many studies have shown that children are most likely to get ringworm from a pet, due
to a combination of closer contact with their pets and hygiene.
Pocket pets also can get ringworm, with Trichophyton mentagrophytes responsible for
almost all documented cases. Known species infected include guinea pigs, gerbils and
hamsters.
The literature is sparse about potential transmission between pocket pets and dogs and
cats, but given that the most common organisms responsible differ between species,
it’s unlikely transmission occurs.
Some breeds of cats and dogs may be more susceptible
Although there is no sex or age predisposition to infection, Persian, Himalayan and
Rex cats, and Yorkshire and Jack Russell terriers, are overrepresented in published
studies looking at the dynamics of ringworm infections.
Although ringworm fungi are everywhere, there are conditions that predispose a
pet to infection
Page 11
These include:
• Dogs used for hunting and working dogs
• Stress and concurrent illnesses in adult animals
• Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in the home
• Microtrauma to the skin for any reason
• Group housing situations
Interestingly, in cats, many studies have shown that infection with feline
immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline leukemia virus (FeLV) alone does not increase
risk of disease.
Skin lesions mimic other diseases
A good medical history for your pet can help your veterinarian make a diagnosis of
ringworm. Skin abnormalities in a newly acquired pet, especially if accompanied by
skin lesions on a pet owner or other member of the household, are common historical
findings.
Common physical examination findings include:
• Areas of hair loss
• Areas of scaling and crusts (in cats it can take the appearance of cigarette ash)
• Broken hairs
Itchy skin is not a common feature in cats and dogs but can occur.
Some infected cats and dogs have no clinical signs but can spread the disease to other
pets. Your veterinarian might advise testing asymptomatic pets sharing an infected
pet’s space, particularly if the disease recurs.
Unfortunately, similar signs are seen with other common skin diseases of cats and
dogs, such as superficial bacterial skin infections, mites and allergies. Additional
testing is needed to sort through all these potential diagnoses.
Diagnosis requires specialized tests
Once a veterinarian suspects a pet might have ringworm based on history and physical
examination, a few specialized tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
One common test is to use a specialized type of UV light called a Wood’s lamp. M.
canis glows when exposed to the particular wavelength of UV light produced by a
Wood’s lamp.
Another test that your veterinarian can do in their clinic is examination of hair and skin
under the microscope. Studies suggest that 85% of ringworm infections, regardless of
which type of fungus is present, can be confirmed this way.
In cases where a diagnosis is not confirmed by either of these tests, a fungal culture
is needed to definitively diagnose ringworm. Results can take from a few days up to
four weeks.
Treatment includes both the pet and the environment
Although the vast majority of ringworm infections resolve on their own, most
veterinarians recommend treatment to decrease duration of infection and to reduce the
chance of spread to other pets and people.
Page 12
Therapy for pets includes topical therapy and oral medication. There are lots of
treatment options and your veterinarian will work with you to decide which medications
are best for your pet.
Diligent and thorough environmental decontamination is a crucial part of treatment.
Without adequate cleaning, reinfection can occur and the disease can spread further.
Your veterinarian will work with you on specific measures but keeping areas hair-free,
washing areas frequently, deep cleaning carpets and washing a pet’s bedding daily are
essential. Many owners find it easier to keep an infected pet in an area that is easy to
clean. However, simply keeping a pet in a kennel is not recommended.
Many pets respond to treatment quickly, sometimes within a week or two. Your
veterinarian can monitor therapy using a Wood’s lamp or fungal culture. Most pets are
completely cured in four to eight weeks.
The good news is that almost all pets and people recover completely with no long-term
effects. People who have any skin lesions they think could be ringworm should seek
advice from their doctor about treatment.
Recurrent or lingering infections are usually due to treatment failure, either through
inadequate duration of therapy or failure to properly decontaminate the environment.
Is prevention possible?
Although it can be difficult, there are steps pet owners can take to prevent an infection
from getting a foothold in their house. Having a thorough physical examination,
including a Wood’s lamp evaluation, on all new pets can help. Isolating new pets added
to a home (but again, not kenneling them) can help not only prevent ringworm from
spreading but also allow time to detect other diseases. As always, practicing good
hygiene when interacting with a new pet is essential.
Morris Animal Foundation is dedicated to improving animal health
through science and also by providing resources for pet owners to learn
more about important diseases that can impact health and well-being.

Holiday Human Foods Dogs
Can & Can’t Eat
Original Article found at Purina.com
The holidays are a time to celebrate with family, friends and lots of delicious food.
Some of the ingredients in your favorite holiday meals are safe for dogs to eat, but
others pose a threat.
Whether you’re wondering “Can dogs eat turkey?” or “Are cranberries bad for
dogs?” our experts have you covered. They explain exactly which human foods your
dog can eat and how to feed them to him.
Onions are Bad for Dogs & So are Other Human Foods
Many seasonings, spices and other ingredients we add to dishes to add flavor aren’t
good for dogs. Onions are bad for dogs, and so is garlic, salt and pepper.
If you plan to share any of the below dog-safe holiday ingredients, make sure they’re
plain and unseasoned. It may sound boring to you, but it will be just as tasty for your
pooch.
There are a couple other holiday foods to avoid besides seasonings and spices. One
of the most popular is the honey baked ham. If you’ve wondered “Can dogs eat
ham?”, the answer is no. Deli hams contain a lot of salt and most baked hams are full
of sugar, neither of which is good for dogs.
You also want to keep raisins and any baked goods containing them out of reach.
Items containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener, are toxic. Read all your food and
medication labels and keep those items put away.
Holiday Human Foods Dogs Can Have
Although dogs can’t have onions and the other items mentioned above, there are
plenty of holiday foods they can eat.
• Turkey: Yes, dogs can eat turkey. They can have chicken, too. Give your dog
white meat, free of any salt or other seasonings. Don’t give them the skin or
bones, though. The bones may sound like a safe and fun treat, but they can do
real damage.
• Green Beans: If you think green beans will make a good dog treat, you’re
right. You can feed Spot raw, steamed or canned green beans. Just make sure
they’re plain and free of any oil, spices or seasonings, such as salt. Other green
vegetables like broccoli and spinach are also safe for dogs, but may cause gas.
• Carrots: Not only can dogs eat carrots, but most also love the crunch and the
flavor. Although dogs can eat raw carrots, you can also try giving your dog
cooked varieties. The green tops are also edible.
• Cranberries: There are several fruits and berries your dog can eat throughout
the year. Cranberries are popular in holiday dishes and you can share them with
Page 16
your dog. He may not like the tart flavor, though. Keep sugary cranberry sauces,
relishes and similar dishes out of reach.
• White Potatoes: Yes, dogs can eat mashed potatoes, but they can’t have the salt,
pepper, garlic, milk, butter and other ingredients added to them. The skin isn’t
good for them either, so peel the potatoes before cooking and mashing if you
plan to feed some to your dog.
• Sweet Potatoes: Dogs can also eat cooked and mashed sweet potatoes, but the
same advice stands. Keep them plain—make sure he doesn’t get his paws on the
yams covered in marshmallows and sugar.
• Pumpkin: Pumpkin is a tasty, healthy treat for dogs and many love the flavor.
When feeding your dog canned pumpkin, read the label carefully. You want to
avoid giving him canned pumpkin pie mix, which contains sugar and spices he
can’t have.
Treat in Moderation
Although dogs can eat the above human foods, remember treats of any kind (people
food or regular dog treats) should only make up 10 percent of their daily caloric
intake. The other 90 percent should come from a complete and balanced dog food.
Don’t overwhelm your dog with a bunch of new foods, either. Even though foods like
turkey and carrots are safe, too many new things at once could result in an
upset stomach.
Festive Dog Food Recommendations
If your dog loves getting holiday ingredients like carrots and sweet potatoes as a
treat, try feeding him a dog food that incorporates some of his favorite flavors into
his everyday diet. Explore all our dry dog food products to find one your pup
will love.

Pet Loss and Grief
Used with Permission from Morris Animal Foundation
Updated May 20, 2021 – As human beings, we have a unique capacity to love. But
with that love inevitably comes grief. Because of how we come to love our pets, we
experience profound loss when one of them becomes ill or dies. Everyone mourns in
their own way and there is no timeline or formula for processing loss.
FACTORS THAT COMPLICATE GRIEVING
According to the Argus Institute at Colorado State University, there are several
factors which can complicate an already difficult process. This list includes:
• No previous experience with significant loss, death or grief
• A personal history involving multiple losses or other recent losses
• Little or no support from friends or family
• Societal norms that trivialize and negate the loss
• Insensitive comments from others about the loss
• Feelings of guilt or responsibility for a death
• Untimely deaths like those of a young companion animal
• Deaths that happen suddenly, without warning, and those that occur after long,
lingering illnesses
• An unexplained disappearance
• Not being present at death
• Witnessing a painful or traumatic death
• Deaths that occur in conjunction with other significant life events like birthdays,
holidays or a divorce
TOOLS TO HELP
There are some strategies we can use to help ourselves, and those we care for, during
the grieving process.
TIME
No one grieves on a prescribed timeline. Everyone is different and some losses take
longer than others to move through to a place of acceptance. Be gentle with yourself
and honor the time it takes to heal.
STORY
Share the story of your loss with those you care about and who care about you, but
also share your joyful memories.
CONNECT
Find and make use of your support system. Understand that not everyone knows how
to support someone in grief.
If there are other pets in the home, they may grieve too. Some may need to connect
while others may need to retreat to process the loss of the companion animal that
shared their home.
RETREAT
While connections are helpful, also recognize there will be times you need to retreat
and recharge. Grieving drains your energy, and you may need more quiet time to
recharge than you normally take.
Page 24
LISTEN
Pay attention to your self-talk. If your emotions are spiraling out of control, you may
need additional support.
SUPPORT
If you know someone who is grieving the loss of a pet, the best thing you can do is
be a good friend. You can’t fix it for them, but you can help them heal by being there
for them. Let them know you are thinking about them.
MEMORIALS
Memorials are a beautiful way to honor the memory of a beloved pet. At Morris
Animal Foundation, our memorial card program provides an easy and thoughtful way
to memorialize a beloved pet while supporting science that advances animal health.
It’s another way to create a living legacy in your pet’s name. A memorial card also is
a heartfelt way to reach out to a friend or family member who has lost a pet.
RESOURCES
Sometimes we all need additional support when moving through a loss. Many
veterinarians have materials they can give you to help with the grieving process, and
they also may have suggestions regarding a memorial or other tribute for your pet.
Local animal shelters often have pet loss groups based out of their facilities or know
of other groups that can provide needed support.
Recommended online resources or help lines include:
• The ASPCA Pet Loss Helpline (877.474.3310)
• The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement
• Colorado State University Argus Institute
• Dumb Friends League
• Human Animal Bond Trust
• Tufts University Pet Loss Support
There also are excellent written resources to help both children and adults dealing
with grief and loss. Recommended readings (adapted from the Dumb Friends League)
include:
For children:
• “When a Pet Dies” by Fred Rogers
• “Dog Heaven” and “Cat Heaven” by Cynthia Rylant
• “The Tenth Good Thing About Barney” by Judith Viorst and Erik Blegvad
• “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White
For adults:
• “Coping With Sorrow on the Loss of Your Pet” by Moira Anderson Allen M.Ed.
• “To Dance with the White Dog” by Terry Kay
• “Animals as Teachers and Healers” by Susan Chernak McElroy
• “It’s Okay to Cry” by Maria L. Quintana
• “The Loss of a Pet: A Guide to Coping With The Grieving Process When a Pet
Dies” by Wallace Sife
Losing a beloved pet is difficult, but knowing there are resources available, and
realizing you’re not alone when it comes to pet loss and grief, can make the process
just a little easier.

Leo started off with a bang in conformation getting a BOB and Group 3 in the 4-6
month puppy group, followed by 3 nice majors from the puppy class. Shows were
put on hold due to COVID, but he did not stay idle. At barely 6 months old he
earned a 103 Prize II in NAVHDA Natural Ability, and in four straight legs in a
single weekend earned an AKC JH title. WCA NSD was next and then in October
2020, he filled an opening in a NAVHDA Utility Test at the last minute with very
little training, earning a Prize II, including a 4 in duck search (his 3rd search ever).
April 2021 he received his 4th conformation major which earned him a new
Champion title and eligible for a Dual Weimaraner award. Leo is a goofy fun-loving
boy who loves to perform!

He’s back! Leo has certainly lived up to his name! After earning his first Dual

AKC CH/SH title. Leo is certainly a go-getter and we look forward to working
toward a NAVHDA UT Prize I and AKC MH, along with more WCA ratings titles
with our boy. Having just turned 2, we will be performing all WCA recommended
health testing so we can hopefully sire many more Dual Weimaraner Versatile

What Makes Him Unique
By: Carole Lee Richards | [email protected] | for the AKC Gazette July 2021
If you breed Weimaraners for any length of time you quickly realize that novice
owners come in all shapes, sizes and motivations when it comes to raising their
brand new Weimaraner puppy. One of my favorite types of new owner is the overly
conscientious one who dotes on their Weimaraner puppy, has a million questions, and
needs reassurance that they are doing everything absolutely right when it comes to
rearing their puppy. These folks come up with some of the most amusing and startling
questions about our breed.
For example, I had one of these wonderful “worry warts” call me in a panic. She
blurted out, “I don’t know how I missed it, but there’s something wrong with my
puppy. He has growths in both of his ears!” Her words came out with machine gun
rapidity, punctuated by gulps for air. The tone was a combination of panic and guilt. I
tried to calm her and get more information about what was happening with her puppy.
She described a couple little flaps of skin around the edges of the puppy’s ears, some
on the outer edge and one on the inside of the ear. I asked if she would take her phone
and send me a picture. Moments later I had multiple pictures and another anxious
phone call. The pictures confirmed my suspicion that her Weimaraner has Harrasburg
horns. Trying to calm her, I explained that these little skin tags occur in many dogs and
that they were harmless. In Weimaraners we call them Harrasburg horns after the name
of very early imports from Germany that hailed from the Harrasburg Kennels.
This was not the only question that I’ve fielded about Weimaraner markings and coat
characteristics. Our standard says that the Weimaraner’s coat is, “Short, smooth and
sleek, solid color, in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray, usually blending to lighter
shades on the head and ears.” While that is a good general description there are nuances
that the standard does not address. Sometimes the coat color along the spine is a darker
shade of gray that gradually blends into lighter gray on the sides. This pattern is called
an eel stripe since it mimics the coloration of darker on top/lighter on the bottom seen
in many types of eels.
Along with coat color variation is the not uncommon cowlick. It’s just a section of hair
that grows in a direction different from the rest and resists being combed flat. It can
occur in any part of the body but common sites are along the top of the muzzle and on
the back of the neck. I’ve heard them discussed in judging seminars and the bottom
line is that they are such a minor variation that they are pretty much ignored. In the
show ring, I’ve successfully shown dogs with cowlicks and been questioned about it
only once. The question surprised me but I recalled someone once referring to them
as “God’s thumbprint.” I used that line and got a laugh out of a usually solemn judge.
My personal experience with cowlicks is equally amusing. I owned devilish little bitch
who had matching cowlicks on her shoulder blades. We called her “Angel Wings”
which matched her temperament not at all.
Who would ever think that there were so many exceptions and footnotes possible in
describing a smooth coated, gray dog? The more you know about Weimaraners, the
more you appreciate their uniqueness.

Garden State Weimaraner Club Specialty
September 11, 2021
Respectfully Submitted by Michelle Ostrander, President
The Garden State Weimaraner Club held its Fall Sweepstakes and Specialty on
Saturday, September 11th in conjunction with the Somerset Hills Kennel Club all-
breed show at North Branch Park in Bridgewater, NJ. This specialty was dedicated to
the memory of our long time member, friend and supporter, Dorothy Heinz. We could
not have asked for nicer weather for the club’s return after the Covid interruption last
year. It was our pleasure to host this specialty and to spend time on this historic day,
the 20th anniversary of 9/11, with exhibitors and friends.

Delaware Valley Weimaraner Club
Fall 2021 Sweepstakes and Specialty
Submitted by: Sue Ramspacher
The Delaware Valley Weimaraner Club held its Fall Sweepstakes and Specialty on
Sunday September 12th in conjunction with the Westchester Kennel Club all-breed
show at North Branch Park in Bridgewater NJ.
Weimaraner breeder Mrs. Suzanne Burns kicked things off by judging the Puppy
and Veteran Sweepstakes. Mrs. Vicki Seiler-Cushman presided over the impressive
Regular and Best of Breed classes. The beautiful weather and lovely park setting
provided an excellent venue for exhibitors to proudly showcase their entries and
spend time socializing.
Congratulations to all ribbon recipients and winners! Thanks to DVWC members
and all the exhibitors who contributed to the show’s success.
