Application Method Many veterinarians recommend testing dogs for the
MDR-1 gene, especially affected breeds. The Washington

1. Oral: Chewable tablet that your dog ingests test your pet.
2. Topical: Liquid that is spread between the

should blades or down the back of your dog

Topical flea and tick preventatives are a great option for
pets that are picky eaters or have sensitive stomachs.
However, if you have small children or other animals,
you need to be careful that they don’t touch or lick the
product before it has time to dry.

Spot-on flea and tick options may have a medicinal
smell or cause transient itching/irritation or even hair
loss. Topical treatments are also not a great option for
dogs that like to swim a lot or dogs that need frequent
baths. Water can affect the efficacy of the product.

Oral treatments can be an easy and convenient option
for dog parents because they can be given like a treat. If
you use oral treatments, it’s best to monitor your dog to
make sure they have eaten the entire tablet and do not
throw it up before it can be absorbed into their system.

If your dog vomits after eating an oral flea and tick pre-
ventative, call your veterinarian for instructions on re-
dosing, as well as to report a potential reaction to the
product. Feeding oral preventatives with a meal may
help decrease upset stomach as well as help with prod-
uct absorption.

Geography

Different geographic locations have different local
parasite populations, including fleas and ticks, as well
as other parasites such as heartworms and intestinal
worms.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council is a helpful
resource to identify the parasites in your area so that
you can make sure whichever flea and tick product you
choose keeps your dog fully protected.

Access to Outdoors

Consider the types of outdoor areas where your dog
spends time. Dog parks, hiking trails, parks, and back-
yards can all be homes to fleas and ticks. If your dog
spends a lot of time in wooded areas or spaces where
other animals and dogs spend a lot of time, their risk of
exposure to parasites goes up.

Even if your dog doesn’t spend a lot of time outside,
fleas can easily come in through window screens, on
other pets who go outside, or even on a human’s pants
and shoes. That’s why veterinarians will always recom-
mend flea and tick prevention regardless of how much
time a dog spends outdoors.

MDR-1 Gene

Some breeds (such as Collies, Australian shepherds, and
Shetland Sheepdogs, etc.) carry a genetic risk factor for
a mutated gene that causes drug sensitivity. These dogs
cannot safely process certain drugs, including some
ingredients in preventatives.

Over-the-Counter vs Prescription Flea and

Tick Medicine

As you browse your flea and tick prevention options,
you will notice that some products require a prescrip-
tion from your vet while others do not.

Over-the-Counter Flea and Tick Products

Over-the counter (OTC) flea and tick preventatives do
not require a relationship with or prescription from a
veterinarian. They are typically available for purchase
online and in many retail pet stores.

If you decide on an OTC flea and tick preventative,
always check in with your veterinarian to make sure it
is a safe option for your pet. Your vet can advise you on:

• Potential adverse drug interaction with one
of your dog’s current medications

• Potential adverse reaction to your dog’s cur-
rent medical condition

• Potentially provide a recommendation for a
broader spectrum product for your dog

• Whether you should consider testing
for genetic conditions before starting a
preventative

• Any signs or symptoms of an adverse reac-
tion to the medication

MEET GRANT GOODING
JUNIOR EXHIBITOR

BY: CARLY SUTHEIMER

Grant grew up watching his dad train dogs, from
basic obedience to field training hunting dogs. Grant’s
parents run a dog boarding and training facility in
Baldwin, Wisconsin. His family breeds, raises, and
trains English Pointers, Labradors, and English Setters.
Over the past year, Jami Meath & I have had the plea-
sure of helping expand Grant’s world of dogs beyond
the normal.

Grant has always loved German Shorthaired
Pointers. When he found out that Beau and
Milly (Jami’s dog & my girl) were going to have
puppies, he so wanted one!! When the puppies
were born, Grant was there! He helped through-
out the process and was given the opportunity
for one of the puppies to be his. “Prince” was
the last puppy born in the litter of ten and was a
liver roan male that he quickly fell in love with.
The journey begins! Grant has done almost all

of Prince’s train-
ing. Grant earned
a Junior Hunt
title on Prince and his NAVHDA Natural Ability Test,
receiving a Prize 1 score. With our encouragement
and assistance, Grant vastly expanded his dog show
involvement to include exhibiting in Conformation,
Rally, and Obedience this past year!! Prince earned
his first Championship first point this past July. This
summer, Grant also tried his hand at dock diving and Fast cat, putting a Dock Diving
Senior Title and BCAT title on Prince! This team is on fire!

Grant is one of those kids who truly has a gift when it comes to dog training and han-
dling. His calm demeanor and patience really show when he is competing.

This spring, he was given the opportunity to run Milly
and Addie (my GSP girls both finished Master Hunt
titled dogs) to gain experience at the Master Hunt Test
Level of Competition. Over the few weekends he ran
them, he put two qualifying passes on each dog. It was
great to see him honing his skills and gaining experi-
ence to train and run Prince next year in Master.

Grant also started showing his dog’s sire, Beau, in
Rally, in the Advanced B & Excellent B classes, work-
ing toward an RAE title. He and Beau earned 8 RAE
qualifying runs in a few short months! At one trial,
they received Highest Combined Scoring Dog with
a perfect score of 100/100. Together, this team only
needs one more pass to achieve his RAE title!

What’s next? Grant wants to go for Beau’s Rally Master title. Grant also showed
Beau in Junior Showmanship, earning multiple 1st places, and has won Best in
Show Junior twice at our German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Minnesota Specialties
Shows. Grant also shows Beau as a Special in the Breed ring!

For this young man, the sky is the limit!! We are so proud to be part of his launch!

Congrats buddy!! Carly and Jami

GSPCA HALL OF
FAME RECIPIENT

SUE CLEMONS

At the last board meeting, Sue Clemons
was approved for the club’s most pres-
tigious award as a Hall of Fame mem-
ber. She has been a member of our club for
49 years.

Sue has been involved with Shorthairs since
she and Ken (also a Hall of Fame Member) got
their first hunting dog in 1970. She trained
GSPs for hunting and hunt tests. She appre-
ciates the beauty of a dog working at what
it was bred to do and looks for a dog with
the conformation and condition to perform
those duties easily. As an exhibitor, a breed-
er, and a judge, Sue has spent her life for the
betterment of the breed. Being involved with
the breed for as many years as she has, the friendships made are numerous, and the mentoring of
new people into the breed has benefited multiple exhibitors, owners, and breeders. Sue has been
the ultimate lifetime working member. Without people like Sue Clemons, clubs simply do not exist.
They falter and fail due to a lack of encouragement and of setting an example of what needs to be
done. Sue and her husband, Ken, recruited people to be on the GSPCA Board of Directors as well as
other positions of leadership. She has always been available to answer questions from the newbies
and experienced members as well. Her contributions are instrumental in ensuring the future of
the clubs and the breed she serves. She was one of five members of the GSPCA Illustrated Standard
Committee. Her insight and wisdom provided valued input toward the final product, the GSPCA’s
first printed Illustrated Breed Standard. She was Secretary for the GSPCA, first elected in 2000 for
multiple terms. Sue was approved to judge Shorthairs in 2004. She has judged several times for the
National Specialty and as a Breeder judge for the Top 20.

Her service and accomplishments include:
• 1987 - NSS Show Secretary - assisted with catalog and merchandising
• 1993 - Editor of GSPCA Yearbook
• 1993 - 1995 - NSS Executive Committee
• 2000 - 2008 - GSPCA Secretary
• 2001 - 2002 Secretary NSS Executive Board & Judges Hospitality
• 2006 - 2008 - NSS Ribbons and Advertising
• 2009 - Top Twenty-five Breeder - Judge
• 2011 - NSS BOB and Bitch Classes - Judge
• 2021 - 4-6 months Beginner Puppy Competition – Judge

Sue has been involved with local clubs (GSP Club of WI, GSP Club of Northern AZ, Desert GSP Club,
and the GSP Club of CO). She has served as show chairman and secretary for the parent club and
the local clubs. She has served as an officer, show chairman, field trial secretary, hunt test chair-
man, and cook for the various local clubs. Sue also enjoyed working water tests in Wisconsin. She
has also spent multiple hours stuffing envelopes sending out ballots for the GSPCA, and many other
tasks over the years that assisted the club where needed. She is a lifetime volunteer for the GSPCA
and still is an excellent source of information about all things GSP. Congratulations to Sue Clemons
in appreciation of your service.

2022 OUTSTANDING
SPORTSMANSHIP
RECIPIENT

SCOTT PHIPPS

The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America
has participated in the American Kennel Club’s
Outstanding Sportsmanship Award program
since 2015. The GSPCA is pleased to announce that
Scott Phipps is the recipient of the 2022 Outstanding
Sportsmanship Award. Scott has been involved with
GSPs for over 25yrs and, along with his wife, Marla
Faver, have bred, raised, shown, and hunted GSPs
under the Painted Sky kennel name. Scott is a licensed AKC judge for hunt tests and field trials. He judges
for his local club’s events when needed and often judges at events in the southeast as well. He’s often
found filling in for many needed positions at a field trial or hunt test. He spends hours of his own time
helping prepare for local club events. He always offers his horses or responds to the request for the use
of his horses for other judges and individuals apprenticing. He spends hours in the saddle scouting for
anyone who needs a scout (new members, individuals at a club event for the first time, and old friends)
and will serve as a gunner as needed. He always responds to everyone’s questions about training advice
positively and constructively. After each run or placements, he is there to offer congratulations for a
good run or the milestone. He’s even there for the handler to provide a word of encouragement when
the run does not go as they hoped. He never misses an opportunity to offer congratulations for support
when needed. On top of all his work and support of local and out-of-town events, he helps with rescue
when needed and has cared for many club members’ dogs during illness and hurricanes. His experience
with the sport and his caring nature for the dogs, horses, and people shows in his actions at trials, tests,
and training days and his support for the clubs hosting those events.

Additionally, Scott will go out of his way to help fellow competitors to ensure they have the support they
need, even at the sacrifice of the dogs he and his wife are trialing. Whether he is a judge, scout, acting
as a gunner, or a competitor, he puts the competitors first. Scott Phipps is an outstanding sportsman,
representative of our sport, and a role model to follow.

How to Stop Reverse Sneezing
in Dogs
There are a variety of different
tricks to try to get the episode
of reverse sneezing to stop.

Some suggest briefly covering
the nostrils to cause your dog to
swallow, which then helps get
rid of the irritant that caused
the episode.

You can also try massaging
your dog’s throat, which could

What Is the Treatment for Reverse Dog
Sneezing?
Reverse sneezing does not require medication or
treatment and is typically a fairly benign process
in your dog—as long as it is infrequent.

If a dog has never had an episode before, they
should see a veterinarian to ensure that it is actu-
ally reverse sneezing and not something else, such
as coughing or choking.

If the episodes become more frequent or severe,
consult a veterinarian to evaluate the underlying
cause. They will likely perform chest x-rays and

UPDATE FROM THE STATE VETERINARIAN ON
CANINE PARVOVIRUS CASES IN
NORTHERN MICHIGAN

AUGUST 24, 2022 | MICHIGAN.GOV
FORWARD BY BUNITA EICHELBERGER, DVM, MS, DACVR

As many veterinarians in the community, I followed the developing news of the dogs
in Michigan that had clinical signs consistent with parvovirus infection but had
negative point-of-care tests. Further diagnostic testing for these cases confirmed
most of the dogs were positive for parvovirus infection. The negative point-of-care
testing for these dogs was intriguing and a good reminder that further testing may
be warranted to confirm a diagnosis. The dogs in Michigan that were negative for
parvovirus infection, after additional testing, had other common pathogens associ-
ated with gastrointestinal disease (including Giardia). Gastroenteritis is common
in dogs and the clinical signs can be similar regardless of the underlying cause
(including infectious agent, parasites, dietary indiscretion, and toxin). The cases
in Michigan reiterate the importance of obtaining a good clinical history. The dogs
that tested positive for parvovirus, in Michigan, did not have a history of complete
vaccination. There are several reasons why a dog would not be considered fully
vaccinated. And it is common for a veterinarian to not consider a dog vaccinated
unless the vaccines were administered by a veterinarian/under the supervision of a
veterinarian. For a variety of reasons, dogs that are vaccinated by a source other
than a veterinarian may not be truly vaccinated.

FOCUSING ON THE WIN

BY: SANDY WEAVER

USED WITH PERMISSION FROM THE CANINE CHRONICLE, AUGUST 2022

When you show your dog, do you know the most important thing for the judge to see, and do you know
how to showcase it? Most non-professional handlers don’t, and that’s why they don’t win as much as
they could.

In my recent article (Inside the Mind of a Judge, The Canine Chronicle, June 2022), what judges are look-
ing for was highlighted. Not one judge said they were looking for faults–that’s because every dog has
faults, and it’s not the faults that define the breed. They talked about looking for points of excellence in
the dogs and weighing those points against the inevitable faults. There’s no such thing as a perfect dog,
so finding the ones with lots of virtues and with faults that don’t impair their ability to do that breed’s
job is the art and essence of judging.

As the owner, handler and perhaps even breeder of your dog, what does this mean for you if you want
to win more? It means that you need to know what “excellent” is in your breed. You learn that by visiting
long-established, successful breeders and taking a tour of their kennel, and picking the brains of those
breeders about the dogs you are seeing. Ask them where each dog is strong–based on the standard and
in comparison with what’s being shown in the ring currently. You learn that by sitting ringside at large
shows, regional specialties and national specialties, asking yourself the same question. Do this with a
catalog in your lap, studying the dogs you see in the ring and noting in the catalog the ones you consider
above average. Analyze the notes you take–how many relatives did you make note of? When you see one
or two kennels producing what look like excellent dogs to you, those are the people you want to learn
from, and maybe get a stud service or a dog from in the future.

Now, watch the professional handlers who show your breed. First, assess the dog the handler is show-
ing based on what you’ve learned from successful breeders and your own ringside studies. What are
that dog’s points of excellence? Ignore the faults for now–where is that dog especially strong? Now,
watch the professional handler. How does that handler showcase the points of excellence? Here are a
few things you might see:

1. The dog has a stunning headpiece – the handler may use their hands to subtly
frame the head as the judge approaches for the individual exam. The handler may
finish the down-and-back with the dog facing the judge, not pulled to the side. The
handler will bait the dog with the head facing in the direction of the judge and with
no part of the handler in the way of the judge’s view of that pretty head.

2. The dog has a beautiful neck – the handler will bait the dog so that the muzzle
points down a bit, showing off a well-arched neck. The handler may run their hand
over the neck as the judge is standing back looking at the dog’s outline. The han-
dler may bring the dog back to the judge from the down-and-back and let the dog

PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

32

self-stack sideways, maybe even dropping a small toy or piece of bait so the dog
arches the neck in the free stack.

3. The dog has a wonderful front assembly – the handler will be sure the front is
always showcased. It will be stacked first, the head will be up and out of the way of
the judge’s view of the front, and at the end of the down-and-back, the handler will
stop the dog a bit farther back with the front feet pointing directly at the judge so the
judge can’t miss that lovely front.

No matter what it is, the professional handler knows how to showcase each dog’s most excellent point,
and they do it subtly and well. One thing to look for when watching the pro is where their eyes are
pointed when the judge is looking at their dog. It’s human nature to see another person looking at some-
thing and to look there, too–professional handlers use this knowledge to entice the judge to notice and
focus on their dog’s strengths.

Now it’s time for you to honestly assess your dog’s strengths. Ignore the weaknesses for the moment–
you’re not planning a breeding, you’re planning show ring presentation. Be brutally honest with your-
self, and if you can’t be, ask the breeders that you admire and have learned from to honestly assess your
dog. Don’t put your feelings into the mix–this is about learning to win more with your dog; it’s not a
personal indictment of your dog or of you.

Where is your dog strong, based on the Standard and in comparison with what’s being shown in the ring
currently?

That’s the question you need to ask about every dog you ever think of entering in conformation. It’s the
first question you need to ask about every puppy you think of purchasing, and also the first question you
need to ask about any stud dog you’re thinking of using.

Where is your dog strong, based on the Standard and in comparison with what’s being shown in the ring
currently?

Answer that question, showcase those strengths and be prepared to smile graciously as you win more
with your dog.

The GSPCA encourages our members to participate in the
CHIC program. The Canine Health Information Center,
also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health data-
base jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Founda-
tion (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Ani-
mals (OFA).

Effective May 1, 2014 the required tests are:

Cardiac: Exam (auscultation or echo) by a Board Certi-
fied Cardiologist at the Minimum age of 24 months, with
results posted to the OFA site. The age of 24 months is a
change to this requirement. In addition, the exam must
now be performed only by a board certified cardiologist.

Hip Dysplasia: OFA Evaluation at Minimum age of 24
months or PennHIP.

Elbow Dysplasia: OFA Evaluation at Minimum age of 24
months. This is a new requirement based on the rising in-
cidence of elbow dysplasia in all sporting breeds including
GSPs. Previously elbow dysplasia had been an optional
test. Elbow Dysplasia is a crippling hereditary disease.

Eye Exam: Eye examination by a Board Certified ACVO
Ophthalmologist annually until Age 6. Results registered
with OFA. There is no recommended age to start as long
as the eyes are open.

Cone Degeneration: Optigen test results registered with
the OFA. Only one subsequent generation of two CD tested
dogs may be cleared by parentage. The following genera-
tion will have to be tested.

Optional Tests:
Autoimmune thyroiditis: Evaluation by an OFA ap-
proved laboratory with results posted to the OFA site. It is
recommended that the test be repeated every two years.

Von Willebrands Disease: Clearance using the vWD Type
2 genetic test from an OFA approved lab. (Genetic Test) Re-
sults to be posted to the OFA site.

A special note about Lupoid Dermatosis (LD). In June
2013 the GSPCA Board of Directors reviewed information
from a retest of dogs previously tested for LD by cheek
swab. Because some of the different results obtained from
the blood sample retest have not been explained and be-
cause the results of the LD research have not been pub-
lished in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Board has
taken a neutral position on this test at this time. Breeders
need to consult with PennGen at the University of Penn-
sylvania to determine the usefulness of this test for their
breeding programs. (Please see the Members Section of
the GSPCA web site for more information.)

*Note – In addition to the breed specific requirements above, a
CHIC requirement across all participating breeds is that the dog
must be permanently identified via microchip or tattoo in order to
qualify for a CHIC number.

FIELD TRIAL RANKINGS Thru July 2022
Compiled by: Ryan Carson, [email protected]

Competition rankings are complied by Volunteer Contributors using information supplied by the AKC which can lag behind or fail to cap-
ture certain wins because of their timing. Rankings only include dogs whose owners and co-owners are all GSPCA Members. If you have a
question please contact the named Volunteer with the dog’s full name, registration number and the names of all of its owners. If errors are
found they will be corrected as soon as possible in a future issue.
