The Weimaraner Magazine ▬ 5 ▬ wca breeder referral A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service. A few things you might like to know about this service. I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies. The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and some have also done a little research on the breed. The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup, though I encourage them to consider greater distances. The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder. If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for any local clubs nearby as well. This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed on the list. Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed! Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state, email and phone number. Please send this information to [email protected] Thank you, and best of luck with your litters! Billie Thompson WCA Breeder Referral • [email protected] Expecting Puppies? Please contact me and I will verify the email address we have on file. Remember, if you have any questions let me know – I’ll be happy to help! 830-624-9699 wcaexecsec.gmail.com futurity corner BY CINDY JAMES-MOORE It is that time of year again - time for the breeders to receive their status forms letting them know which puppies are eligible or not and why. The notifications went out in January via email. Please take the time to look at the status of your litters. If you did not receive yours, please let me know. The first field futurity is in March and the first show futurity/maturity is in April. Just a few reminders as to why your puppies many not be eligible: 1. The owner’s and/or breeder’s membership in the WCA has lapsed. Remember that it takes 2 months for membership to be (re) established, so please keep that in mind when planning on attending a Futurity/Maturity event. 2. Lack of AKC registration form on file. A copy of the AKC registration must be on file with the Futurity Administrator. Also, if ownership has changed since a copy had been provided, a copy of the new registration must be sent to the Administrator. Once again, all owners must be current WCA members. If you have any questions on eligibility of your puppies, please contact me as soon as possible. The more time we have to work on the problem the more likely a solution can be found. Please take the time to look over your information. Thanks, Cindy DeTails from the Office BY CINDY JAMES-MOORE The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 6 ▬

CCL Injuries in Dogs: What They Are, How to Fix Them Pet Pulse | By Alaina Lamp | May 2023 Cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) is caused by a gradual degeneration of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), which results in a partial or complete ligament tear. Tear or rupture of the ligament allows excessive movement in the stifle, causing lameness and pain. CCLD is the most commonly diagnosed disorder of the canine stifle joint. Dogs may present with a variety of clinical symptoms. CCLD can occur in dogs of all sizes and age but dogs that are female, obese or older are at higher risk. A genetic link has been documented in the Newfoundland and may be present in other breeds. According to Dr. Hadley Gleason, a board-certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries are the No. 1 reason pet owners see her for surgical consultations. The CCL in dogs is analogous to the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in people. This ligament connects the femur, the bone in the thigh, to the tibia, or shin bone, in the dog’s hind leg. It is located in the “knee” joint (called the stifle in dogs) and prevents the tibia from sliding forward. “Unlike in people, CCL injuries are usually due to degeneration of the ligament over time and can result from normal daily activity,” notes Dr. Gleason. In people, ACL injuries are often related to sports or other high-intensity activity. Because this injury is degenerative in dogs, it is common for injuries to occur in both hind legs around the same time. DIAGNOSING CCL INJURIES The first sign that owners may observe when their dog has a CCL injury is the dog being lame all of the sudden, according to Dr. Gleason. “The dog is not using the leg or is limping, and that is because of pain,” she says. “I recommend checking with your veterinarian, especially if the limping lasts longer than 24 hours. There are many causes for limping and pain medication is always appropriate.” Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose a CCL injury by manipulating the joint to check for instability. If the tibia can move independently of the femur, a CCL injury is confirmed. While this process can be done awake, it may be better for your dog to be sedated, especially for dogs that are anxious or painful. CCL TREATMENT OPTIONS There are two treatment methods for CCL injuries. Medical management, including anti-inflammation and pain medications, along with physical therapy is a reasonable option if your dog is older, has a high risk of complications with anesthesia, or has a chronic disease that could interfere with their recovery. Medical management is also okay if surgery is not financially or logistically an option for your dog. However, most patients will have better outcomes with surgery. The standard surgical procedures used to treat CCL injuries fall into two categories: extracapsular repairs and biomechanical repairs. The phrase “extracapsular repair” refers to a fix that happens outside, or external to, the “capsule” of the stifle joint. It involves placing a special type of suture material outside the join “to mimic the function of the cranial cruciate ligament,” according to Dr. Gleason. “This procedure does not require significant special training or equipment, but it does not provide as much stability as other methods.” HEALTH The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 8 ▬

Biomechanical repair involves opening the stifle joint and rotating and reshaping the tibia to neutralize the compressive forces. Dogs that are larger or more active typically recover better and do better in the long term with biomechanical repairs than extracapsular repairs. However, these methods are more expensive because special training and equipment is required. The tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) are both biomechanical repair procedures. POST OPERATIVE CARE “The goal after surgery is to allow time for healing. That means creating scar tissue for extracapsular repairs or allowing the bone to heal for biomechanical repairs,” says Dr. Gleason. Uncomplicated healing can take 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the patient. During this time, your dog will require cage rest and leash walks only. They must also avoid jumping, running, and playing so the work done by your surgeon is not damaged. They should wear an e-collar to prevent them from removing their sutures or licking the incision site, typically for about two weeks. After the rest period, rehabilitation therapy may be helpful for your dog. Additionally, Dr. Gleason says maintaining your dog at a healthy weight is important for preventing pain and lameness. HOW TO CHOOSE A TREATMENT Many factors go into deciding how to treat CCL injuries. For example, smaller dogs may do better than large dogs with medical management or extracapsular repairs. In older dogs the impact of the injury on the dog’s quality of life must be weighed against the risks involved with surgical procedures. The owners of the dog play a big role in determining what is the best course of action for their pet and their family. Those who choose the specialized surgery for their pet may discover that many veterinary specialty practices currently have waiting lists for patients seeking orthopedic surgeries. Dr. Gleason assures her clients that waiting a few months to see a surgeon will not significantly change your pet’s surgical outcome, if surgery is the best solution for your dog. Inbred Linebred and Outcrossed THREE METHODS FOR BLENDING CANIINE BLOODLINES Written by William Given | February, 2024 INBREEDING, LINEBREEDING AND OUTCROSSING ARE TERMS DESCRIBING THE THREE METHODS FOR BLENDING CANINE BLOODLINES TO ACHIEVE A DESIRED CONSISTENCY OF GENOTYPE AND PHENOTYPE. Used wisely, they provide enlightened breeders with an array of valuable systems to aid you in determining the direction and control of a well-planned breeding program. Each plays a vital role in meeting the needs of the small breeder. And, in the larger scope, of the preservation and maintenance of the breed and it’s most desired characteristics. Defined briefly: INBREEDING is the breeding of two dogs that are very closely related to one another, a sister to a brother, sire to a daughter, dam to a son, and in some cases the mating of half-siblings or of aunts and uncles with nephews and nieces. Because inbreeding amplifies the genes for weaknesses as well as those for strengths, inbreeding can be either highly successful or a dismal failure. Its use thus necessitates the ability to accept the disappointments that are mathematically certain to occur and the willingness to cull frequently and even heartlessly to make certain that those failures are not repeated. LINEBREEDING is a much more conservative form of inbreeding. It usually involves the breeding of more distant relatives in the interest of concentrating the genetic code of a specific stud dog and brood bitch, thereby intensifying the probability of developing prepotentcy for many of the superior traits of the two dogs. The more often the bitch’s or stud dog’s name appears on the pedigree, and the closer to the front it is, the more tight the linebreeding has become. OUTCROSSING, as you might expect, is the mating of two dogs that are not related to one another. It is also a term used for breeding away from certain families and bloodlines that have become too tightly bred and need an infusion of “outside blood.” Outcrossing is generally used to reestablish overall health and fertility that might have been lost through inbreeding or extended linebreedings. BASIC GENETICS On the simplest level, genes are bits of DNA molecules that cause certain proteins to be created within a cell and dictate every heritable trait (traits that are passed on rather than those that are impacted by environmental factors) that make a dog all that he is. Genetic information is carried in the cell nucleus by chromosomes. Diverse compositions of genes control everything from color and length of coat, to conformation and overall well-being, and to intelligence and temperament. Genes carry pairs of alleles that modify their given traits to a lesser or greater extent. When paired, these alleles are said to be dominant if the traits they express override other traits found on their corresponding allele. They are said to be recessive if these traits are unexpressed due to the presence of other overriding dominant alleles. A gene is said to be homozygous if the paired alleles are both dominant, in which case the dog will always pass on a dominant allele to its offspring, and the offspring will always show that dominant trait. It is said to be heterozygous if its paired alleles contain one dominant and one recessive component. In this case, the dominant allele will be the one that is expressed, but the recessive allele is still present, and could be passed on to the offspring. Each parent of a dog contributes 50 percent of its genetic material to each one of its offspring. And, 25 percent of which material was received from each of its parents in turn. Say you are breeding two dogs that have nothing in common. Depending on what 50 percent of genetic code was contributed from the sire and dam, all of the offspring of this particular mating could conceivably look quite different. If this is the case, the good news is that no major weaknesses are turning up. Weak breed characteristics The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 14 ▬

are very frequently recessive traits and are thus unexpressed unless concentrated in a manner that makes them homozygous. Therefore, your puppies should be relatively free of congenital health concerns, and should achieve (at a minimum) average conformation, overall health and well-being, and fertility of their breed. The bad news is that the lack of dominance for certain traits that you think are important may be keeping you from getting the consistently good quality puppies you really want. This is a classic outcrossing dilemma. The results are safe, but not necessarily spectacular. SELECTING FOR A DESIRED TRAIT Here is how the theory works in practice. Say your bitch has a grandsire that you particularly appreciate because of a certain set of traits that he passed on to many of his get with great regularity, (We will use the stud dog for our example, but it could just as easily be the brood bitch). Maybe he possessed an incredibly nice head and rock solid topline, or had great reach and drive, or a remarkable temperament. Maybe he had a combination of these desired breed characteristics. His granddaughter, if you have been lucky in your choice of bitches, might have inherited some of these qualities from him, but she would not have gotten more than 25 percent of his genetic material, and that will have been altered in some way by the presence of the other 75 percent of the genes that she has inherited from other ancestors. If you breed her to an unrelated dog, the contributions of her superlative grandsire will become even further diluted, until the qualities you wished for from that individual become all but negligible. To ensure that the inheritance of that lovely bitch will be passed on with increased probability, you may choose to breed to another son or grandson of his that expresses his same strengths to a large degree. You might even go back so far as to flirt with inbreeding, and breed your bitch back to her grandsire or an equally handsome full brother of his. The goal of the mating is that the resulting offspring will have a greater concentration of the desired genetic material, and thus a greater likelihood of possessing the same superior breed characteristics. This concentration of genetic material also results in a higher incidence of homozygosity for certain heritable traits, and thus may actually become dominant for them. If this occurs, the puppies that result from the breeding may have a prepotency for those desirable traits. If that is the case, it means that he or she will tend to pass them on to subsequent offspring with a great deal of consistency due to the dominance of the alleles concerned. If you have been in sport long enough, you have had to hear breeders talk about a dog that “stamps his get” (or “her produce”), this is what they mean. By now, you may well be wondering, if inbreeding and line-breeding have the result of creating superior show dogs by intensifying all that great genetic code, why are we not doing it all the time? Well, there are, of course, several reasons. The single greatest reason is that when certain genetic information is being combined in a highly concentrated manner, it also magnifies whatever weaknesses have been masked by the dominate genes even in an outcrossed milieu. Back to our example, although the grandsire possessed many absolutely outstanding qualities, he also had very bad feet. Perhaps bad feet are almost unknown in your breed, so this aberration went all but unnoticed as long as the stud dog in question was bred to bitches whose feet were at least as good as the breed average. The bad feet in this case remain recessive, masked by the breed’s dominant genetic inclination toward good feet. When you start experimenting with inbreeding and linebreeding, whatever genetic combination occurred to give the grandsire dog bad feet will be made stronger by the concentration of that trait. It is thus possible that when you breed your bitch to a related stud dog, and both have decent feet, and you may not even be aware of the “bad feet problem” that existed in the grandsire, you may be shocked when you are presented with a litter of puppies that typifies everything you wished for, except for having terrible feet. A large breeder with time and money to spare may look at this situation as a learning experience, cull the litter from his or her breeding program, and breed the bitch back in hopes of getting a litter of puppies with better feet. If the second attempt succeeds, and it could, the pick puppy can be kept for the future and the other puppies may be placed in good show or pet homes. The unexpressed tendency to bad feet will remain recessive unless a future breeding with another dog with the same genetic concentration brings it out again. However, a small breeder will not have the luxury of trying that breeding a second time and culling the less-thanperfect puppies, and may feel forced to keep one or two puppies as show prospects despite their feet. In this case, the genetic code for bad feet will be passed on yet again, perhaps now as a dominant trait. And so, the unweary Geneticists readily admit that they are not quite sure why it is that hybrid vigor works, but there is no arguing with the fact that in certain circumstances the breeding of two unrelated lines will result in the genesis of a litter of dogs that are far superior to their parents. The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 15 ▬

breeder has unintentionally loosed a heritable defect into the gene pool of a breed that before this time had not been known for bad feet except in very rare instances. THE SHRINKING GENE POOL The other drawback of consistent inbreeding and linebreeding is that, over time, if you continue to breed close relatives through a number of generations, it decreases the gene pool to the extent that many good qualities will be lost in the shuffle. By definition, inbreeding reduces the numbers of gene pairs that can be inherited by any offspring, which is why inbred dogs have such a high prepotency for certain traits. The process of inbreeding has simply eliminated a wide variety of alleles from the genetic code of those dogs. It is thus quite true that inbred systems, over time, will suffer from a general loss of size, fertility and vigor. These things are improved by heterosity (the presence of a large variety of genes). The more inbred a dog is, the more homozygous its genotype, and the less access is available to traits that are dependent on a variety of alleles for their expression. This loss of vigor, and the resulting genetic weaknesses that occur with it, are not solely created by inbreeding. These can be traits that may have existed in a recessive state and have been expressed due to the consistency of their concentration by breeding back into the line of dogs that carry them. Or it may just as easily be that traits that include vigor, fertility and freedom from genetic weaknesses rely on heterosity to be expressed and maintained in a healthy state. THE RIGHT BALANCE Inbreeding and linebreeding should always go hand in hand with judicious outcrossing to ensure the continued overall health, fertility, intelligence and temperament of your dogs. Inbreeding and linebreeding can certainly produce the spectacular individuals that you have long dreamed of, but Mother Nature has proven over and over again that the greatest “meshes” (breeding that consistently produce outstanding specimens) are often those that occur between two unrelated (though possibly linebred within themselves) individuals whose genes combined to produce what is commonly referred to as hybrid vigor. Geneticists readily admit that they are not quite sure why it is that hybrid vigor works, but there is no arguing with the fact that in certain circumstances the breeding of two unrelated lines will result in the genesis of a litter of dogs that are far superior to their parents. This is especially true in the context of traits that are controlled by a number of different genes, rather than those that are expressed very specifically. Two examples of the latter would include working ability and intelligence. The former consists of a variety of alleles controlling traits such as conformation and movement. Size, which is genetically programmed, can be affected strongly by environmental factors such as the lack of proper nutrition. Bone is generally considered to be moderately heritable, and along with substance seems to rely in part on its genetic dominance in certain breeds or bloodlines. Thus it is that increased heterosity, or the exposure through breeding to a broader array of genetic material, increases the chances of a given dog inheriting the combination of genetic code that will result in superior show dogs. THE MAGIC MESH If the genetic code passed on by your dog has an affinity for that of its mate (more correctly put, if the alleles concerned combine in a way that produces dominance in certain important respects while masking any recessive traits that would be undesirable), then you have the puppy of your dreams, and not just once but repeatedly. The discovery of these nicks is, of course, 75 percent pedigree research and hard work, 20 percent intuition and five percent sheer dumb luck. Even geneticists freely admit that luck, chance and happenstance play a major role in the final genetic inheritance of full brothers and sisters. For this reason, you are likely, in a single litter of dogs, to get one superstar, a couple of above average performers, one or two strictly average, and a sire and dam both worth their weight in pure gold. Unfortunately, the top ranked dogs of today may not even pass their outstanding qualities on to the next generation with anywhere near the consistency of their parents. The variety of combined attributes that has made them great can combine with the next generation’s breedings in ways that are varied and erratic. It depends greatly on the genetic code added by the brood bitch and the selected stud dog. And so, the cycle begins again. The question of whether to linebreed and how much, or of whether to inbreed and to whom, when to outcross and which lines will provide the needed “punch” to create the next generation of superstars. Again, it is your knowledge and intuition that will increase your chances of succeeding. reprinted with permission from: https://caninechronicle.com/?p=57107 submitted by Bonnie Lane, Breeders Education Chair The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 16 ▬

The Weimaraner Foundation Fund (often abbreviated as the WFF) is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed to benefit the Weimaraner breed. The WFF works quietly behind the scenes to help fund education, Weimaraner health research, and many Weimaraner rescue organizations from all over the country. In the past 2 years alone, we have donated: • $30,000 to the Morris Animal Foundation to help fund three health studies that would benefit our breed (Drug Therapy for Heart Disease, Blood Disorder Treatment, and Wobblers Syndrome). • $62,800 to various reputable rescue organizations from all over the country that have taken in Weimaraners with large vet bills/health costs In the past 5 years, the WFF has donated more than $65,000 to health research, and over $130,000 to Weimaraner rescues. Throughout the years the WFF has also donated funding for many other causes, such as: • AKC Reunite Fund following several hurricanes • Funding for health seminars and presenters at our National Specialties • Paid for the restoration of the National Field Trial trophy • Donated to the National Field Trial building • Funded the building of cabinets for our Weimaraner display at the National Bird Dog Museum • Helped fund various AKC “Meet The Breeds” Weimaraner displays • Donated funding to several AKC CHF and Morris Animal Foundation health studies that were relevant to the Weimaraner breed The WFF operates as a lifeline for many rescue organizations across the country that take in Weimaraners. When these organizations take in a Weimaraner for rescue, often the WFF is contacted for support in medical/veterinary bills and costs associated with care and rehabilitation. This is a major part of our mission: “To further the advancement of the Weimaraner by providing funds for education and health research; fund requests associated with the adoption of homeless Weimaraners; and to help fund other projects that will assist Weimaraners and their owners in advancing the unique qualities of the Weimaraner.” While we are a separate entity from the Weimaraner Club of America, we stand firmly behind the WCA and all decisions made by the Board of Directors for the betterment of the breed. Where Does The Money Come From? The WFF operates a small number of fundraisers throughout the year, including the WCA Top 20 Competition and Banquet and raffles at the National Specialty. The bulk of our foundation money comes from YOU, the Weimaraner owner! Most of our funds come from generous bequests from the estate of Weimaraner lovers, or in memory of special people or dogs that have passed. These donors have left a legacy of generosity behind that ensures the Weimaraner breed is taken care of well into the future, be it health research for the breed or individual rescues to help Weims that have not had the best life. You can help us and help the breed by remembering the Weimaraner Foundation Fund when you donate to charities, or plan your estate. I frequently see posts on social media from dog owners requesting advice on becoming involved or getting started in field events. It is possible, but it will take some leg work and time on the road. However, it is totally worth the effort if you enjoy being outdoors and watching your dog do what it was bred to do. Starting Field Events I became involved in field events when I owned my first Vizsla. I had a Weimaraner before the Vizsla, but when my Weim passed, my husband and I could not replace our special boy at that time, so we chose a similar breed. When our Vizsla pup was about three months old, the breeder wanted to see how he was maturing and asked us to meet her in the middle of what seemed like nowhere! I did not ask what type of event; I merely agreed, and off we went. Upon arrival, I was surprised at the number of people, dogs, and blaze orange I saw! I asked the breeder what was happening, and she explained it was a hunt test. Well, what is that? I questioned. It is an event where upland game, usually quail here in the south, are planted, dogs are released in pairs to hunt for those quail in 30-minute braces, and judges rate their performance based on the level they are entered: junior hunter for young, inexperienced dogs and up to master hunter for well mannered, experienced dogs that you would enjoy taking on a hunt. Our dog’s sire was entered, so I asked if we could watch him. The breeder gave my husband and me some blaze orange vests, and off we went, walking behind in the “gallery” to watch the sire. The first time my dog’s sire went on point, it took my breath away. I was in awe. At the end of the brace, I was hooked and asked how I could become involved. Becoming involved in field events when you have no clue what you are doing is the hard part. Note, this is where you have to put on your big girl pants (or big boy pants) and get past your fear of trying something new or embarrassing yourself and seek out mentors or a club willing to help. My journey began with NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association). They were the only group locally that helped you train your dog. The group met one weekend per month. I sent out some emails, found my local chapter, and asked for advice on what I needed to bring and what was expected. Then, I showed up in clean clothes with “newbie” written all over me. At the end of the first training day, I was ordering birds for training the next day. My dog did not point a bird the By Tammy Richmond The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 18 ▬

first time out, nor the second. But I persisted, and before I knew it, he was entered in his first junior hunter hunt test. As time passed, I made friends, engaged training partners, found other places to train, went to seminars and clinics, read books, and went to hunt tests to watch what was expected. I then became involved in field trials. The most challenging part was finding people willing to mentor me and help me train my dog and me. I was not interested in sending my dog off to a trainer. I wanted that partnership and wanted to train my dog myself. I had been riding and training my horses for quite a few years and enjoyed creating the bond and relationship it takes to compete as a team. So, I kept at it and made so many mistakes but continued to watch, try, and learn. My recommendation to you, if you want to create a partnership with your dog and try your dog on some birds, is to reach out to your local club and find a member willing to guide you in the right direction. You can also attend a hunt test. This is a great way to meet people and learn the ropes. In all likelihood, you will find information on where people train, with whom they train, places to train, places to find upland game to purchase for training, and training partners. Social media is a great place to find game birds. While at the hunt test or field trial, step out of your comfort zone and ask questions. Walk up to someone you do not know and introduce yourself. Watch which people are involved and ask the event coordinators questions. If they are volunteering to run the trial or test, you know they are passionate and willing to help. If you want to find an event to attend, you can go to the AKC website and look up events by state or date. You want to look for a pointing dog field trial or hunt test. The date and city will be noted. Once you find an event, click on the event and look for something called the premium. This will show the exact location and give directions to the event’s location. It will also provide an email address for the secretary for the event. You can reach out to the secretary to ask questions. You need to keep several items in mind before heading out for your first event. Be prepared to drive, sometimes a really long time. Grounds to hold events are becoming increasingly scarce, so I have to travel farther and farther to attend events and train. I am fortunate as in my area, I have a couple of places to train within a 3-4 hour drive. So yes, I drive 3-4 hours every weekend to train and condition my dogs. Once you have contacted the secretary, be sure to ask if it is wise to bring your dog along. Why, you ask? Depending on the type of event, there WILL BE gunfire. The question is how close the gunfire is to the parking area. If shotguns are being used and are going to be close to the parking area, DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG if your dog has not been gun acclimated. You do not want your dog to become fearful of gunfire before you have ever even started your journey to have a gun dog. Wear comfortable shoes and plan on walking in heavy cover and in wet conditions. Tennis shoes and shorts are probably not the best attire. Watch handlers (the people competing with their dogs) and how they handle their dogs. This is a good indicator of someone you want to befriend. Walk some braces and see the difference between a junior hunter and a master hunter or a puppy stake versus a gun dog stake, so you know what you are training towards. Most of all, head out with determination and make yourself some bird dog friends, and remember, we have ALL been beginners. You will not embarrass yourself or ask a dumb question. We all remember those beginning days and are thankful to someone else who helped us along the way. Most of us are willing to pay it forward. How much do we love our pets? So much, that 90.5 million families share this adoration of animals! That’s upwards of 70 percent of U.S. households owning a pet of some sort! Dogs are in the majority, about 69%, but cats are a close second at 45.3%. Living with pets makes us more happy. And we want to up that happiness-quota by offering tips about how to make your home joyous, beautiful, cozy, luxurious – all the good things – for you and your pet alike. Here’s how. CHOOSE FURNITURE THAT IS RESILIENT TO PETS Sofas, chairs, rugs – they can look gorgeous, but how’s the functionality? We pet parents need that ying/yang, starting with choosing fabrics and materials that won’t harbor smells and are also stain and scratch-resistant. These days, furniture companies like Burrow and Floyd are catering to pet households, designing with smart, pet-friendly materials. In high-traffic areas like living rooms, it’s a good idea to choose furniture with easy-to-clean fabrics such as microfiber, microsuede , and other game-changing synthetic fabrics that resist scratches and stains. We know that removing pet hair is part of our routine, when we can. We’ve found microfiber cloths, a pet sponge, lint brush, or tape best for removing stubborn pet hairs. We relish in cushions with removable covers that can go in the washing machine – so easy! Faux leathers make wiping furniture even easier, plus we love that their kind to animals when they’re made thoughtfully. What doesn’t work? Furniture that becomes a scratching post or wears down easily. Avoid buying furniture with wicker, rattan, or sisal elements. That Frank Gehry Wiggle Chair is absolutely iconic, but unless you want to invest in a $1,500 scratching post, you might want to avoid it. PROTECTING FURNITURE JUST IN CASE Even when all the above is ticked off the to-do list, there may still be the chance that pets will be destructive to a living space. Attractive faux-fur throws or other blankets are stylish and can be washed and changed frequently. Spraying the legs of furniture and other wooden areas with bitter apple spray does a good job of repelling pets from chewing. Just be sure to test the material before using in full. Other common sense approaches include keeping cat and dog nails trimmed, as well as brushing pets on a regular basis. DISHING ON THE PET DISH For dogs that are big enough to reach them, installing these elevated dog bowls that have been purposefully attached to the side of the kitchen cabinets, is a great way to prevent them from being kicked about on the kitchen floor. We love this functional solution to feeding smaller dogs and this classy wall mounted feeder that is sure to keep any cat happy. If you don’t have the room to slide the pet bowls underneath the toe kick of your kitchen cabinetry, this stylish Turning your home into a pet-friendly sanctuary Reprinted with permission Author: Wondercide, wondercide.com The Weimaraner Magazine ~ February 2024 ▬ 22 ▬

dresser with a pull-out drawer for pet bowls is another great alternative to keeping your home stylish. One more alternative is to choose a cabinet drawer at the bottom of the kitchen cabinets and use it as a designated pet food station. Line it with a mat or something else waterproof to protect your cabinets. KEEPING PET ACCESSORIES, DOG CRATES AND PET TOYS OUT OF THE WAY Keeping a home stylish is often difficult for pet parents who tend to have more than their fair share of pet accessories, including leashes, toys, and grooming supplies. Organizing cat and dog supplies is doable if you follow our smart storage solution tips. But first, it’s important that you designate one area of your home for these items, be it an entryway, a mudroom, a kitchen, or a laundry room. If additional cabinet space is not an option, choose a shelf in the pantry for pet supplies. Adding a stand-alone storage unit in an empty corner of the room where your pets sleep is an effective way to store pet accessories too. Adding hooks, baskets and bins will make it more efficient and stylish. It’s easy to attach sturdy command hooks or a functional shelf with baskets on the wall to hang the dog’s leash and harness. The baskets can be used for toys and can also serve as a space for waste bags and dog-friendly wipes, in addition to grooming supplies. While we admit that keeping a dog crate out of the way is almost impossible for some pet parents, there are ways to get around that, too. We suggest you look online for the multiple ways that dog kennels can double as attractive end tables, coffee tables, even credenzas. With a little creativity and know-how, we believe that all pet parents can turn their homes into stylish sanctuaries that keep them and their pet companions happy.
