The American Brittany ▬ 4 ▬ October 2023 OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE: To promote cooperation and friendship among the breeders and owners of Brittanys and to encourage higher standards in breeding, training and showing of Brittanys in the field and in the show ring; to discourage the breed from becoming split into groups of “field dogs” and “show dogs” and to strive to keep it forever a “dual dog”. The American Brittany ▬ 5 ▬ August 2023

The American Brittany ▬ 6 ▬ October 2023 Prologue This series is about the legend of a bird dog named Sparky. Rare Air’s Sparkin’ A Nuclear Blast, (Sparky) was born after years of hearing story after story of bird dogs gone by. The dogs, the titles, the blow ups, the grounds, the weather, the judges, the brace mates, oh… and, of course, the embellishments and tall tales (pun intended). The one-upsmanship, the keeping up with the Jones, the heartaches, the money spent, the pedigrees, accidental breedings and so much more. For years I have taken it all in, not having decades of experience like many of those I listened to. The stories, and the dogs, were often larger than life, so, not to be outdone Sparky came to life. Sparky is no more real or unreal than the dogs in these stories. And might I add, if you are ever offended by what I share in this series, I urge you to look up the term parody, because this is what this is, all in good fun and something so many have laughed about as I shared stories of Sparky. Many urged me to write about Sparky, and after much prompting, the legend of Sparky the bird dog is available for your reading pleasure. Sparky, The Early Days Sparky spent most of his time during gestation feeling confined by the tight space he shared with his 4 brothers and sisters. He wanted nothing more than to get out of that place. He knew how special this breeding was. Both the sire and dam were soon to be hall of famers, due in large part, to the many champions and national placements they threw, but none were ever even close to what Sparky would become and accomplish. The sire and dam were shoe-ins to be first ballot hall of famers based on Sparky’s first year on earth alone. From the very beginning Sparky knew he wanted to be the best bird dog of all time and he wasn’t about to wait until he was born to get things started. To give you an idea of how special Sparky was, let me share with you something that has never been done before or since. Sparky got all his puppy and derby points while still in the womb. That’s right, I know it’s hard to believe but witnesses, judges and competing handlers saw it for themselves. Not having the ability to see or hear at birth turned out to be a major factor in the development of Sparky’s extraordinary nose since that’s the only sense he could use to find birds initially. Out of respect for his fellow competitors Sparky stopped running in those puppy and derby stakes as soon as he had earned the 2 possible points for each group. While he loved blue ribbons, he was nothing if not a good sport. Thankfully, I had first pick of a male puppy from this litter and obviously I chose Sparky. I lived nearby and was there for the birth. We went to work right away. Sparky was broke at two… months that is. It was a long four months for Sparky to have to wait until he turned six months old, the minimum age to enter competition. Sparky spent this time studying and running on different grounds all over the country. East coast, West coast, North, South, Midwest. His sizeable paws touched them all during these four months. Sparky and I wanted to be ready when the time came to enter the “Bigs”. And ready we were. As it turned out, Sparky’s coming out party was an hourlong championship in Oklahoma, the annual Limited, Internationale, Open All-Age, All Breed Steed Crowman Classic. The local club accepted Sparky’s registration and let everyone know that the six-month-old puppy, who The Legend of

The American Brittany ▬ 7 ▬ October 2023 had earned all his puppy and derby points before he was even born, was going to debut at this Classic. Pointing dogs, and their owners and handlers, wanted to see for themselves what this dog named Sparky was all about. Finished champions, national champions, regional stars all showed up to put their best to the test. The assembled throng were surprised to see that Sparky was large for his age, in fact, he was at the breed standard, a size he would remain throughout his career. As it turned out, Sparky drew the last brace. Some great runs had been laid down in the 24 braces before Sparky’s. The competition had been fierce. Now what could this sixmonth old, who had never run on these grounds, really do to compete against such mature, seasoned world-class bird dogs. The answer would be shocking… The breakaway for brace 25 took place on a downhill slope. Sparky’s brace mate was a pointer, a national champion known for his fast starts. The judges indicated they were ready, my fellow handler and I were ready, and the sizeable gallery was ready both on horseback and on the dog wagon. For a moment, everyone held their breath, including the horses. Even the dogs in the dog wagon were quiet, peering out the holes at the spectacle about the unfold. Whistles blew, dust filled the air and when it cleared the pointer was glued to the spot, stunned by the launch of the dog next to him. Sparky was already way out front, working the objectives, at least 400 yards ahead of his brace mate in the first two minutes. Sparky covered the first mile in no time and BAM! He slammed on point for the first time in his adult career. He was so far ahead already that his brace mate didn’t even have a chance to back him. Sparky’s point was high and tight, he didn’t move a muscle. His tail was up and had a slight quiver indicating his intensity. His ears were high and forward, further punctuating his intensity. You couldn’t even see him breathing. I stepped in and put up a covey of 20 quail, with five of them flying directly at Sparky’s face. Would this young pup chase? Not a chance. With nary a flinch Sparky held steady through wing and shot. Success! His first find in an actual competition. The gallery in the dog wagon rose to give Sparky a standing ovation. The judge following the defending national champion stopped watching him and joined the other judge to watch Sparky have six more finds in the remaining time. Even the competing handler picked up his dog and attempted to catch up to see this phenomena for himself. Sparky finished the hour about 500 yards ahead of the cantering handlers and judges, still hunting every objective. The judges reluctantly called time, not wanting this spectacle to end. I hollered “HERE!”, Sparky, under protest, gave up the hunt and returned at a full out sprint back to me, turned sideways so the judges and gallery could see him, and he nailed a perfect free stack. Applause filled the air. Even the judges cheered. When placements were announced Sparky was awarded first, second, third and fourth place. No one complained, Sparky had earned it. And this was just the beginning. The American Brittany ▬ 9 ▬ October 2023 Chris Weatherly Growing up along the TN/MS border in western Tennessee, I cannot remember a time when pointing dogs, quail hunting, and field trials were not a part of my life. I grew up hunting behind my grandfather’s setters and continue till this day behind my own pointers. Through my job at the Ames Plantation, I have been fortunate to intertwine this passion with my career. I have ridden almost every brace of every trial held at Ames for the last 20 years serving as a marshal. I am a member of the Benton County (MS) Amateur FTC and the Wolf River Amateur FTC, and director of the Ames Amateur FTC and Hobart Ames Open All-Age FTC. I have judged Open and Amateur field trials from the northern prairies to the thickets and edge country of the south. I am honored to be asked to judge the ABC National Championship again and look forward to watching your worthy competitors and giving my honest, unbiased, and humble opinion. William Smith I have been involved with Field Trials since 1981 when I attended my first trial on the Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tennessee. Since that time I have been actively involved in the four trials held annually on the Plantation and I am currently a Director of the Hobart Ames Field Trial Club. I was also asked by the National Championship Field Trial Club to report the National Championship which I reported in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. I was invited by the late Ted Gardner to judge the Border International Championship in Stoughton, Saskatchewan and that invitation introduced me to the grandeur of the prairies. Later I was invited to become a member of the board of directors for the Broomhill Field Trial Club in Manitoba, a position I held for twenty years. I was blessed to be able to return to the Canadian prairies for all those years to assist with the running of the Manitoba Championship. I have had the honor of being invited to arbitrate 68 amateur and open championships including: Irish Setter Nationals, Brittany Nationals (2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2020), Red Setter Nationals, German Shorthair Invitational, Border International, Saskatchewan Chicken Ch, Dominion Chicken Ch, Manitoba Ch, Texas Ch, Missouri Ch, Alabama Ch, Kentucky Ch Amateur Quail Ch on the Dixie Plantation in Florida, Western Open Ch, All America Ch, Mid America Ch, Southland Ch, Masters Ch, U S Chicken Ch, Georgia Derby Ch, Midwest Shooting Dog Ch, International Pheasant Ch, Kentucky Shooting Dog Ch, and others plus numerous weekend amateur and open field trials. I sincerely appreciate being asked to return to Booneville and am looking forward to another great experience. ANNOUNCING THE 2023 ABC National Amateur Championship Judges

The American Brittany ▬ 10 ▬ October 2023 ANNOUNCING THE 2023 ABC National Championship Judges Terry Chandler I grew up in Roswell New Mexico and coming from a family of farmers and ranchers I have hunted upland birds all my life. I first became involved in bird dogs when I was a sophomore in high school. My brother gave me my first pointing dog which began my lifelong love of hunting dogs. I began field trialing when I moved to Las Cruces New Mexico to attend College. I finished my first pointing dog as both an Open and Amateur Field Champion. That was in 1975. I have been active in field trialing for 50 years. After working for several Fortune 500 Corporations for several years, I decided to make a major career change and start training dogs full time as a professional trainer. I enjoyed dog training and the sport of field trialing so much that I wanted to participate in both full time. I began that career in 1985 and I have been training professionally full-time since that date, 38 years ago. I met my wife Janet when I bought a puppy from her in 1974. We were married in 1978 and have bred German shorthaired Pointers under the “Rugerheim Kennel” name. We are very proud to say that in the 30+ years of breeding GSP’s we have bred hundreds of Field and Bench champions. We have also trained, bred, and/or finished 27 Dual Champions in GSP’s and Vizslas. As a trainer I have been lucky enough to have trained and finished well over 100 field champions. In my tenure of field trialing, I have judged well over 200 AKC field trials. In addition to that I have judged almost all of the pointing breed Nationals. I have also judged several American Field Championships and National Events. I would like to thank the American Brittany Club for asking me to judge your National Championship. It is TRULY an honor. Justin Crook Justin lives in Jasper Missouri with his wife, Ivy Crook and their children Kaulin, Ellie and Lyla. Justin has trained and handled pointers in American Field competition for twenty years. He has vast amount of experience judging American Field stakes including the NGSPA Championships. Justin looks forward to judging our all age dogs.

The American Brittany ▬ 12 ▬ October 2023 Scott Thielen Council Bluffs, Iowa NAGDC Judge Scott Thielen started field trials in the seventies with English setters and pointers in Missouri. He then joined the service in 1981 and was away from the sport for a few years. After coming back from overseas, he moved to Nebraska and has been active competing and judging ever since. Scott has judged several Mid-western Brittany trials over the last couple of years and has commented on how much he enjoys the collegiality and cooperation amongst the competitors; even attending some events that he wasn’t judging. He has stated publicly how much he’s enjoyed the quality of the competition, sportsmanship and positive nature of the Brittany events and has truly enjoyed his time in the saddle. Scott looks forward to watching and experiencing the best the Brittany community has to offer while in Booneville. Denny Sullivan Laramie, Wyoming NAGDC Judge I got started in the dog world like many of us did. I just wanted a hunting dog. That was 1986 I believe. I had great support through the years from my wife Pat and often had one or both of my two children (Jeremy & Amy) tagging along to a field trial or helping me train our next new dog. I had selected Brittany’s as my breed of choice. I was fortunate to have a number of good dogs to field trial and competed with from Nebraska to Ohio. I have been lucky to have success on the regional and national level in the Brittany world, being able to garner a number of FC, AFC and Nat. Fut. Runner up titles with a few of our dogs. I have held offices of responsibility from the regional club level to the National level with the American Brittany Club. I know how challenging it is to put on a high-quality national event. I have judged more regional field trials than I would care to count, including many of the pointing breeds, Vizslas, GSP, Brittanys, Irish Setters, German Wirehaired Pointers and Weimaraners. I have also been honored to judge the ABC National Am. GD Championship back in 2012, I was honored last year, 2022 to judge the ABC National Open GD championship, The National Red Setter National Am. Championship and a segment of the VCA National Gun Dog Championship twice and the Irish Setter National Am. Championship. I have judged futurities for the American Brittany Club a couple of times, and the Vizsla Midwest Futurity as well. I have been able to judge numerous hour championships in the Brittany world from Mich. to Missouri. I feel honored to be asked to return this year 2023 and judge the National Amateur Gun Dog Championship in Booneville, Arkansas. I look forward to judging a class event, with some of the best Amateurs handlers in the country. See you all in Booneville. Peter Coppens Highland, Illinois NGDC Judge I have been involved with bird dogs from an early age, at one point I discovered that my then-current hunting dog wasn’t much of a hunting dog - but was really a horseback field trial dog! This led me into the field trial world and eventually to a competitive level. My dogs have earned many FC titles and won both Open and Amateur National Championships. I began judging in 2004, and have judged many different breeds, including GSPs, Brittanys, Vizslas, Pointers and Setters. I have ran dogs and judged weekend trials and one-hour stakes in both AKC and American Field trials. I have judged the Vizsla Club of America National Amateur Field Championship, National German Pointing Dog Association Championship as well as the NGSPA Championship. The American Brittany ▬ 13 ▬ October 2023 I, along with my wife Diane, am currently in charge of 4 championships. NGSPA – Region 5, NGSPA – Region 16, NGSPA – Savannah River and the National German Pointing Dog Association. I am married to Diane and live in Highland IL. We are What’s the Point Kennels. I am the supervisor at St. John’s Cemetery in Collinsville, IL. I currently have three GSPs. One is still competing and two old trial dogs. “I look forward to watching a good going dog and spending enjoyable time with folks in the field trial community. I look for the betterment of all breeds in these Championships.” Ken Chenoweth Fair Grove, Missouri NGDC Judge My passion for bird dogs started back in 1974 when I purchased my first German: Shorthaired Pointer. By the early 80s I was training a few dogs for the public and by the mid-80s I had judged some of the local trials. As my passion and experience grew, I began to accept more and more judging assignments. Since that time, I have had the fortune of judging several National events for the German Shorthair Pointer National Championship, Gordon Setter National Championship, Irish Setter National] Championship Vizsla Club of America National Championship; Red Setter National Championship, German Wirehair Pointer National Championship and the American Brittany Club (All Age & Gun Dog) National Championship. I have also judged many regional championships including the Rocky Mountain Championship, Missouri Open Shooting Dog Championship, Hawkeye Shooting Dog Championship, and Missouri Amateur Shooting Dog Classic. I have also had the fortune of judging several Brittany Championships like the Prairie States Championship and Iowa Gun Dog Classic. Besides being busy spending time in the saddle judging, I have had the opportunity of finishing several Field Champions, Amateur Champions, and Regional Champions. I am looking forward to watching fine dogs from across the country compete at the American Brittany Club National Gun Dog Championship. American Brittany Club, Inc. The American Brittany ▬ 15 ▬ October 2023 DIAMOND HILL DAN 2X NFC 15X CH/3X RU CH FC/AFC August 14, 1996 - July 21, 2006 Owner: Paul Pollack Breeder: Allan Dahl Dan was bred by Allan Dahl and whelped on August 14, 1996. He grew up on the East Coast, hardly a place for an all-age dog to get a start. Dan finished his Open Field Championship in March of 2000 at the Susquehanna Brittany Club spring trial. He won a 5-point open gun dog stake and finished second in the open all age stake at the same trial. That summer, owner Steve Glass sent Dan with professional trainer John Kline to summer camp in Montana. Both men recognized Dan’s unique athletic ability and incredible forward hunting style. The prairies were the place to polish these attributes and it paid off! Dan was Runner Up in the Quail Classic and won his first National Championship that fall. He continued his winning ways in 2001, winning the Kasco and Iams Dog of the Year Awards that year; he finished in the top 10 Purina All-Age point standings for five years in a row. Shortly after winning the National Championship, Dan was sold to Lowell and Linda Starner. Paul Pollock became Dan’s third owner a couple of years later continuing his winning ways under John’s tutelage culminating with Dan winning the National Championship for the second time in 2004. A feat that hadn’t been accomplished in 30 years since Ban-Dee won for the second time in 1974. “Diamond Hill Dan ran a true all age race to capture the title of Champion. He appeared in the 11th brace of the stake which was the second brace on Thursday. Dan took his edges and stayed with them. His gait was attractive and ground covering; his pattern kept him forward most of the hour. Dan scored a good find just beyond the 217/109 corner at 25. Point was called for him after most of the gallery had come through the area. He was well behaved and showed great intensity. Dan’s second find came at 37, beyond the pavilion. There was a big covey walking off in front of him; he was stylish and perfectly mannered. He finished the hour with plenty of run remaining. It was a very impressive performance.” Bonnie Hildago..2004 National Championship write-up Dan’s short career was highlighted by 15 American Field Championship wins, and 3 Runner-Ups. Besides winning the National Championship twice, (one of only four dogs to have accomplished this feat), he won the Southern Open Brittany Championship twice, the Region 19 Amateur All Age Championship twice, the Pheasant Classic/ Championship 4 times, and the Region 3 Amateur All Age Championship 5 times. Dan dominated the Pheasant Championship in the early 2000’s. Winning in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Only bested in 2002 by the formidable female Poki Dot. He was inducted into the Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame in February 2007 and into the ABC Hall of Fame in November 2008. “While Dan doesn’t have a huge list of offspring to boast about, his personal accomplishments stand alone. He will go down in Brittany history as one of the best all age dogs to ever run. Dan was one of those dogs that everyone rode to watch – he was sure to put on an eye-popping performance, win or not.” Dave Fletcher BDHOF Many of Dan’s offspring, grand and great grand get have shown their potential to carry on in Dan’s footsteps. The American Brittany ▬ 17 ▬ October 2023 Submitted by Karen Hanson: The year was 1986. This was my first nationals back when it was at Mt Vernon, Il. My mother and I drove out, which proved to be an incredible bonding experience for both of us. My mother smoked and was smoking while I was driving. I started reading a book while driving, which justifiably freaked her out. My response to her was that her smoking would kill her, so what was the difference? Needless to say, she didn’t smoke in the car the rest of the trip, and I didn’t read while driving the rest of the trip. My next Nationals was when Chrissy went BOS to Ollie in Booneville. My mother was there, too. She didn’t smoke in the car there, either. :) If anyone wonders why a National Futurity run off is important, both of these dogs, my mother, and I would not have been at either National had it not been for the Futurity run off. I didn’t think I was a big enough cheese to be noticed at the National, but I went for the Futurity. Hook, line, and sinker, the Futurity, and the National were a catalyst to the breeder I would become. ABOVE: Karen Hanson 1986 Futurity Runoff The dogs are CH Karen’s Triwyn E F Hutton JH, and the bitch is CH Bantoms Molly O’Linwood. The judge was Kitty Murphy, and the trophy presenter was Lucille Sawicki. This was the first National Best in Futurity when the Futurity was restructured. DD was out of Jacques Prince Valliant’s last litter. I think he was 14, and we had to send AKC a photo of the “tie” with no one holding either dog. Looking back, I remember the uncertainty I had going into the event. I am so thankful to everyone who welcomed me into the Brittany family.

The American Brittany ▬ 25 ▬ August 2023

The American Brittany ▬ 26 ▬ October 2023 The Pennsylvania Shooting Dog event has become known as the Mingo Extravaganza. This was because the Pennsylvania Brittany Championship event held at the Mingo Club Grounds has followed three other pointing dog events: Region 4 Amateur All-Age (Brittanys only), Ohio Brittany Club events (including all pointing breeds except the Derby), and the Dixieland Open Gun Dog and Open All-Age (Brittanys only). This coordinated effort by Tony Giovinale, Jack Alexander, and by this reporter was held at the Mingo Sportsman Club grounds. Special thanks to Gene Stewart as the bird planter and the Dog Wagon driver. Also Sherry Stewart, who coordinated all lunch and dinner events; Ray Rush, help with bird planting; Geoff Webb, brought 500 quail from Delp Hatchery in Brookville, PA; Jo and Dan Rein and Chris Rider, coordinating competitors to the “line”; finally and especially to all the Pros for their support. Tom Tracy, Jr., Al and Cindy Cropek, Ben Lorensen, and Kyle and Daci Merrill brought their Brittanys making this event a success. The Mingo Extravaganza started March 16 with Region 4, followed with the Ohio Brittany Club events over the weekend, with Dixieland two events during the week of March 21st. The Pennsylvania Brittany Championship began March 25th. Weather conditions were extreme with rain showers, snow, sunshine and temperatures ranging from below freezing to highs in the mid-60’s. Special thanks to all judges – Pennsylvania’s three events: Amateur, Derby, and Open Grand Gun Dog Classics for Shooting Dogs – to ride and maintain their attention to the performance of all the dogs competing. The judges were Paul Rosevear and Ron Harling, Jr., Grand Amateur Stake – One Hour (19 entries), Paul Rosevear, double duty, and Jim Winnen for the Derby Classic Stake – 45 minutes (10 entries); the final three days for the Grand Open Stake – One Hour (36 entries), Bill Haynes and Stan Williamson. Also thanks to Tom Tracy for use of his truck as the Dog Wagon. A continuous course, which was developed by Tom Tracy couple of years ago, was used again this year. It shortened time between braces. This event would not have taken place without the help of these folks. The Pennsylvania Brittany Championship Association (PABCA) and the American Brittany Club also wishes to recognize and thank Nestle/Purina for their continued support of this ABC Pennsylvania Brittany Classic Championship both with funding and dog food. We recognize their continued cooperation and sponsorship of this American Brittany Club event. While the monetary funds support the clubs; quality of the dog food helps keep our Brittanys in competitive condition. As previously indicated on Saturday, March 25th the Amateur Grand Gun Dog Classic Shooting Dog event start at 8:30 AM EDST. There were 19 Brittanys entered and all went to “the line” for the competition. Throughout the start on Saturday continuing through until completion on Sunday, March 26th, for the Amateur event, which was followed with the derby Classic – 10 entries were all completed that day, Sunday. There were 36 Brittanys entered for the Open Grand Gun Dog Classic, which started on Monday, March 27th and completed on the 29th. With regard to the weather conditions, the judges did a great job evaluating the performance of the 19 Brittanys in the Grand Amateur Classic, 10 Brittanys in the Open Derby Classic, and finally the 36 Brittanys for the Grand Open Classic. Listed as follows are the results from the Amateur, Derby and Open Events indicating the placements, owners, and handlers. Grand Amateur Gun Dog Classic – Shooting Dog Championship Bloomingdale, Ohio, March 25-26, 2023 This year was the second time an Amateur Event was held by the Pennsylvania Brittany Championship Club. Paul Rosevear from Peterbury, KY and Ron Harling, Jr. from Albion NY, were in the saddle to judge the entries. There were Nine Braces and a Bye, with amateur handlers – Brian Riggle, Ray Rush, Dan Dodson, Stan Williamson, Dennis Sloan, Vince Anderson, Samantha Gauthier, Mark Auman, Joe Strzekec, and Jack Alexander. The winner of the Amateur Shooting Dog Championship came from brace No. 8, Over Under Reign The Field (aka Pennsylvania Brittany Championship Amateur Gun Dog, Derby, and Open Gun Dog Classics Mingo Sportsman Club Grounds, Bloomingdale, Ohio March 25 - 29, 2023

The American Brittany ▬ 27 ▬ October 2023 Reign), handled by owner/handler Samantha Gauthier. Reign is a white/orange female, three and a half years of age. Second place winner – runner-up – was the brace mate with Reign in brace No. 8, Sassafras Benellie (aka Nellie) handled by Jack Alexander for owner Geoff Webb. Nellie is a tri-color female, soon to be eight years of age. Third place winner came from the 1st brace, Royal Flush Sir Oliver Twist, (aka Ollie), handled by Dan Dodson, owned by Samantha James and Dan Dodson. Ollie is a soon to be four-year-old white/orange roan male. Fourth place winner came from the 5th brace, Kozy’s Rocky Mountain Gambler, (aka Eli), handled by Samantha Gauthier for owners Joan and Patrick Koszenacz. Eli is a five-year-old orange/white male. Open Derby Classic Bloomingdale, Ohio, March 26, 2023 Judges: Paul Rosevear and Jim Winnen Open Derby Shooting Dog Championship (45 Min Heat) 10 Brittanys The winner of the Open Derby Classic came from the 3rd brace, JacOub’s Pleistarachus (aka Play), handled by Tom Tray for owners Debra and Tom Jagielski. Play is a soon to be two-year-old in April, white/orange male. Second place winner – runner-up – came from the 1st brace, Black Creek Peacemaker, (aka Colt), owner/handler Ron Harling, Jr. Colt is a year and a half old orange/ white male. Third place winner came from the 3rd brace, Far Out Fields Cashed In On The Birds, (aka Cash), handled by Kyle Merrill for owner Lee Mustion. Cash is a nine-monthold orange/white male. Fourth placews ithheld by the judges. Grand Open Gun Dog Classic – Shooting Dog Championship Bloomingdale, Ohio, March 27-29, 2023 Judges: Bill Haynes and Stan Williamson Grand Open Shooting Dog Championship (One Hour Heats) Judges in the saddle for three days to evaluate 18 braces – 36 Brittanys – were Stan Williamson, who traveled from Lewiston, MO and Bill Haynes from Jackson, OH. Except for two Brittanys handled by Vince Anderson and Ray Rush, the remaining 34 Brittanys were handled by pros Tom Tracy, Jr., Al and Cindy Cropek, Ben Lorenson, and Kyle and Daci Merrill. Undoubtedly their participation in the Open Gun Dog Classic is what made the event a success. Thanks to all! There were, for various reasons, three dogs scratched. First place winner, Piney Run Zack (aka Zack), came from the 6th brace. Zack is a three-year-old white/orange male, who was handled by Ben Lorenson for owner Kent Patterson. He made several great casts and his bird work was of the style deserving of being the Open Shooting Dog Champion. Second place winner – runner-up – was Piney Run Samantha of Hybrittin (aka Sammy), came from the 10th brace. Sammy is a four-and-a-half-year-old white/orange female. The American Brittany ▬ 28 ▬ October 2023 Judges Bill Haynes and Stan Williamson, both who have had a lot of experience judging pointing dogs made comments during the presentation of the winners/placements that the entire field/group of Brittanys in this Grand Open Championship was outstanding. Quality of style, run, pointing ability, etc., of all the dogs was the best they have ever judged. In addition, indicating it was difficult to select a winner, because there were several Brittanys that were worthy of being the winner, having a higher placement, or given a placement that were not. These were very positive comments about the Brittanys performance during this event. As a brief summary, even though the weather was often “miserable” with low temperatures, bit of snow, and some rain, with sunshine the last couple of days. Everyone expressed their opinion of having a great time and plan to be back next year 2024. All those attending “pitched in” and help in many different ways. It was series of field trials for pointing dogs with a primary focus on Brittanys. It was all about the dogs, with people enjoying being with other people and having a great time. See everyone next year. The American Brittany ▬ 36 ▬ October 2023 Autumn marks the season for all things pumpkin. Dogs, too, love the taste of pumpkin, and it can even offer some health benefits (like relief from both diarrhea and constipation). Although dogs can’t enjoy pumpkin spice products, we’ve found five pumpkin dog treat recipes you can make this fall. Make sure you offer only canned and pureed pumpkin, not canned pumpkin pie mix, which has added sugars and spices. As with any treat, give your dog these snacks in moderation. Pumpkin Dog Treat Recipes Here are four simple pumpkin recipes for dogs. Each has just a few ingredients, all of which are dog-safe. Frozen Pumpkin Dog Treats Ingredients • 1 cup plain yogurt • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree Directions 1. Mix pumpkin and yogurt together in a bowl. 2. Divide the mixture evenly into an ice tray or molds. 3. Freeze for 24 hours. 4. Pop the treats out of the mold and put into a freezer bag for storage. You can also leave them in the ice tray if you have space in your freezer! AUTUMN TREATS YOUR DOG WILL LOVE Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats Ingredients • 2 cups flour • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree • 1/2 cup dog-safe peanut butter (Make sure it has no xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.) Directions 1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin and peanut butter. 3. Stir in the flour and combine the mixture into a dough. 4. Roll out the dough onto a floured surface. 5. Cut the dough into shapes with your favorite cookie cutter. 6. Place the treats 1/2 an inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. 7. Bake for 12 minutes. Pumpkin and Carrot Treats Ingredients • 1 cup flour (If you substitute coconut flour or potato flour, your batter will be a little more crumbly.) • 1 egg • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree • 1 4-ounce jar pure carrot baby food • 1 4-ounce jar pure green bean baby food (optional) Directions: • Preheat oven to 350°F. • Add all ingredients together and mix. If the batter seems wet and sticky, add a little more flour. If it seems crumbly, add a little water. • Scoop out a spoonful of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. The batter should make around 24 treats. If your batter is relatively dry, then you can try forming the dough into shapes (like a pumpkin). To create a green stem on the pumpkin shape, add the green bean baby food to a little bit of the dough. • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until edges start to brown. • Allow treats to cool completely, and then give them to your dog to enjoy. Banana Pumpkin Dog Treats Ingredients • 3 cups whole wheat flour (and extra for dusting the counter) • 2 eggs • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree • 1 banana, mashed Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Mix together eggs, banana, and pumpkin. Add flour and mix until all the flour is incorporated. 3. Lightly dust the counter and a rolling pin with flour, then roll out dough to approximately 1/8 of an inch in thickness. Cut out the treats with a fun cookie cutter. 4. Lay on a baking sheet and bake for approximately 20 minutes. Let the treats cool completely before giving to your dog. 5. Bake for 12 minutes.
