THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 8 ▬ MONTHLY CONFERENCE MINUTES WCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS | Weimaraner Club Of America Zoom Board of Directors Meeting | Wed. Executive Secretary- Cindy James-Moore, AKC DelegateJennifer Martin Absent: Treasurer- Robbe McAlexander Motion made by Sarah Chvilicek to approve the February Board Meeting minutes as corrected. 2nd by Jill Paige. Motion passed. SECRETARY REPORT The April board meeting will be during the week of the National. Some of the Board members will be traveling to, or participating at the events leading up to the National. It was suggested the meeting could be changed if pressing issues need to be addressed, or postponed/cancelled if there are no pressing issues. Email received from the health committee with requests from members and non-members regarding breeders not abiding by the COE. The Board advised the Health Committee to inform those with complaints against members of the procedure outlined in the By-laws to file formal complaints. TREASURER REPORT Financials were given and reviewed. CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS Approve 60-Day Extensions: Names of members late on renewing, who are asking for the 60-day extension to renew their memberships. Clifford Goodman According to the By-Laws, Section 4.B., Termination of Membership: “By lapsing. A membership will be considered as lapsed and automatically terminated if such member’s dues remain unpaid 30 days after the first day of the fiscal year; however, the Board may grant an additional 60 days of grace to such delinquent members in meritorious cases. In no case may a person be entitled to vote at any Club meeting whose dues are unpaid as of the date of that meeting.” Motion made by Sarah Chvilicek to approve the Consent Agenda. 2nd by Wayne Cowles. EXECUTIVE SECRETARY REPORT submitted by Cindy James-Moore Received the check from Nestle Purina PetCare Company for the sponsorship agreement. Received the below from AKC. It is the balance in the AKC Canine Health Fund. They are asking if the WCA would consider directing a portion of the DAF to support ongoing research projects at CHF. There is a link to visit their research studies included. Weimaraner Club of America Donor Advised Fund 4th Quarter 2023 Statement (1/1/2023 - 12/31/2023) 1/1/2023 Balance $8,254.32 Contributions $0.00 PPCPP Contribution $520.91 Investment Earnings/(Losses) $1,174.70 Research Support* $917.77 12/31/2023 Balance $9,032.16 Liaisons will ask the Health Committee’s opinion if they wish to continue keeping those funds in holding to be used for health-related research involving issues specifically affecting Weimaraners. TREASURER REPORT Robbe submitted the financials for review. DELEGATE REPORT submitted by Jennifer Martin Please see above data from AKC with color breakdown. The # of blues is down, but the % of blues are up due to less decline since 2000. The use of silver gray has dropped by the same % that blue has increased. The color gray has remained at the same % of the total. Earlier this month, I shared the AKC advancements in the registrations. We hope to expand the statement to include a reference that “blue is a breed non-regular/disqualification.” COMMITTEE REPORTS Legislation Committee submitted by Christine Boldrick Activity Summary: Our committee is monitoring all legislation at the state and federal levels regarding breeding, importing ownership, licensing, health and any other topic that might affect dog owners. Attached is a chart of the legislation that was reported on for the month of February (through 2/26/2024). Planned Activities: Most sessions are in right now and there are a lot of re-introduced bills and new bills to monitor. We are in close contact with AKC, NAIA and other sources that report and monitor legislation. We will continue to update the chart of monthly of legislation actions and if anyone has a question regarding same, we are available to assist. Recommendation: We recently prepared a small article explaining the difference between the AKC PAC and the AKC CLSF. Our committee is happy to prepare articles that may be of interest to try to involve the membership in actively opposing or supporting certain legislation in their states. Ideas are always welcome. National Field Trial Report submitted by Jeff Brown Activity Summary: The first 2024 NFT Committee meeting was held by Zoom call on February 26th. Attendees: Jeff Brown, Justin Buehring, Chip Glennon, Esteri Hinman, Carey Killion, and

THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 9 ▬ MONTHLY CONFERENCE MINUTES April Mallon. We discussed four topics: 1. Stake manager assignments: • Open – Kim Fowler • Amateur –Carey Killion • Walking puppy – Chip Glennon • Futurity – April Mallon • Derby – John Bonner 2. Process for identifying judges: We discussed a short list of candidates that have judged AKC National Championship stakes for other continental breeds over the last several years. Jeff will do preliminary calls in March to test interest and availability. 3. Banquet – the Committee is exploring alternatives to holding the NFT Banquet at the Lake Murray Lodge. 4. Reviewed 2023 financial results. We basically broke even. Planned Activities: The next monthly meeting is planned for March 20th. During March Jeff will do preliminary calls of judging targets to test interest and availability. Field Committee submitted by Mary Brown Activity Summary: 1. National Bird Dog Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony 2.10.24. Dick Wilber, Tom Hansen, FC/AFC Outdoors Tony Lama and FC/AFC Qizef’s Grau Geist Marlene were inducted into the HOF. Mary & Dick Wilber, Kevin & Hannah Jahr, Diane Vater & Chuck Cooper, Leslie Like and Mary Brown attended the event. The committee identified a few dogs and people to consider for nominations in 2025. 2. Discussed board approved changes to language in the rules for Regional Classic events in December. 3. Fund raising options for the Derby stipend was discussed. Members encouraged to brainstorm what items might raise money in an online auction that is targeted for August or September. 4. Concern re: storage of WCA rotating trophies was raised. Trophies that are not accepted by the winner of a stake at Classic events have been stored by the committee chair or member of the field committee who has local (home) storage space, which has been free of charge to the WCA. Planned Activities: 1. Submit article for magazine on 2024 National Bird Dog Hall of Fame and remind members that they can submit nominations to the field committee. 2. Identify at least two dogs for nominations in 2025 that meet criteria for the National Bird Dog Hall of Fame no later than September 2024. Submit to board or consideration by September/October meeting. 3. Review Regional Classic rules and make a recommendation on flexibility re: required stakes to support clubs who want to incorporate the AKC Regional OGD or AGD stake within the classic. Susan and Mary will draft language for further discussion. 4. Plan fund raising for derby stipend. Recommendation: Investigate costs for WCA insurance, or alternative fundraising options, to cover replacement of rotating trophies if/when a trophy is lost or destroyed in an earthquake, flood, fire, theft, or other natural disaster vs. negligence. This is urgent due to current rules leaving the chair of an event or owner of a property storing the trophy responsible to replace a trophy when negligence is not an issue. Rationale: A natural disaster such as an earthquake, flood, fire, or theft that would result in the loss of a trophy is hopefully a rare event. By history it has been… Recent events have heightened awareness of the financial risk faced to replace trophies that WCA club members volunteered to store when negligence is not an issue. It is unreasonable to expect club members to continue to store or transport without having access to WCA insurance coverage to help with replacement costs. A cost comparison with shipping trophies, storage costs within a region etc. needs to be explored. The Executive Secretary will look into the insurance policy to determine if WCA property is covered for loss due to fire, flood, earthquake, etc. Requesting a decision on whether the owner of a dog is or is not eligible for a 2023 derby stipend due to submitting a membership application in November and then becoming a member in January 2024. The NFT was held in December 2023 during which he was not yet a WCA member. The Board determined the owner was not yet a member of the WCA when the dog ran the 2023 Derby stake at the WCA National Field Trial, therefore not entitled to the derby stipend. Article 1 Section 3: Applicants will become members 30 days after the mailing of the Club magazine in which their name, address and sponsor were published unless objection shall be received in writing by the Executive Secretary. Futurity Report submitted by Cindy James-Moore We have two different people who did not renew their 2024 WCA Membership by December 31, 2023 or the 60-day extension period which ended February 29, 2024. Asking for clarity from the board regarding a person applying for membership and entering their dog at a futurity/maturity the same month that their name appears in the Weimaraner Magazine. As with the derby stipend, the Board determined the owner(s) will not yet be members of the WCA when the 2024 Eastern Bench Futurity/Maturity is held. Article 1 Section 3: Applicants will become members 30 days after the mailing of the Club magazine in which their name, address and sponsor were published unless objection shall be received in writing by the Executive Secretary. Juniors Program Committee submitted by Barb Taylor Activity Summary: The Willamette Weimaraner Club, is requesting that if in the future any Scholarship winner that reaches age 25 and have not claimed their scholarship then, that the money won from WWC’s donation be returned to their club instead of back into the WCA Junior Fund. Scholarship Policy On occasion members of the WCA, or the WCA itself, may offer scholarships to Juniors meeting certain criteria. Criteria necessary to win will be detailed when the scholarship is announced. Scholarships will be held by the WCA for the winning Junior until

THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 1 0 ▬ MONTHLY CONFERENCE MINUTESit is requested by the Junior. Scholarships will be paid to the degree program college or trade school the Junior is attending, not to the Junior. A Junior has until the age of 25 to claim their scholarship. After the age of 25, scholarships will be forfeited and the unclaimed funds will be put back into the Junior program to fund new / additional scholarships. The scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies or equipment required by the study. Juniors may obtain the form to request their scholarship(s) from the current WCA Executive Secretary. The Board does not feel it is in the best interest of Juniors, the Juniors Program, the WCA or the future of the sport of dogs (Weimaraners specifically) to change the Scholarship Policy. Membership Committee submitted by Julie Aune Activity Summary: Scheduled first Zoom meeting for Thursday, March 7 @ 8-9pm Planned Activities: Review Charter, non-renewals, assign committee members to regions for gathering information on local club activities (upcoming and reports on past), consider suggestions. Recommendation: Add WCA member/volunteer Meredith Wadsworth to committee Rationale: Adds additional perspective, varied experiences and contacts. Motion made by Frank Sommer to add Meredith Wadsworth to the Membership Committee. 2nd by Billie Thompson. Motion passed. Nominating Committee submitted by Vickie Margolis The committee met via Zoom on March 5. Introductions and review of charter. Discussion of the qualifications of prospective candidates for specific positions. Christine and Brenda will create an email blast and ad for the magazine to recruit members for open board positions. The committee will meet again on April 30 to discuss candidates and assign interviews. Judges Education Committee submitted by Linda Bailey Judges Ed presented by Derek Beatty at the National on Friday morning. Mary Ellen Macke, Suzanne Burns, and Linda Bailey will be assisting. Ringside mentoring will be Friday afternoon, during the CWC Specialty and again on Sunday during the CWC Specialty. Communications Committee presented by Sarah Chvilicek and Frank Sommer Sarah and Frank are working with Bonnie Hill (Communications Committee Chair) to assess ways to reduce the costs of the magazine. Under review: • Reducing postage costs • Asking members to receive only digital magazine • Revisit the Magazine Cover Policy and reduce the free covers and pages given away. Many National Club magazine policies do not give free covers/ads to members. • Sarah will work with Julie Aune to review AKC’s Club Bylaws Services regarding allowing the WCA to adopt electronic mailings and balloting. Sarah will invite Bonnie Hill to the next board meeting to answer questions the board may have. To prevent duplication of questions, all questions from board members should be sent to Sarah for Bonnie. OLD BUSINESS • Nominating Charter update– Julie Aune reported the committee met and the proposed changes will be sent to the board when completed. • AKC Meet the Breeds, Jan. NYC – Jennifer Martin The breakdown of the reimbursements for the January AKC Meet the Breeds was given. AKC will be sending the check to the Executive Secretary. Jennifer requested reimbursement from the Weimaraner Foundation Fund to help with the costs associated with attending this public education event WFF Response: The WFF can pay for things like booth space rental, electrical hook ups and printing materials for handouts. We have this done several times in the past. We would just need receipts for our records. The WFF cannot pay for travel expenses for volunteers. We can’t even reimburse trustees for travel expenses per our constitution. • 2023 Natl Rosettes update – Jill & Sarah reported that all but 2 have been ordered and sent to the winners. • Committee Chairs and appointees Public Education Members: Alyse Henderson, Gretchen Jungermann, Tanya Rowan, and Ann Johnson. Acting Chair: Billie Thompson. Motion made by Frank Sommer to approve the Public Ed committee as submitted. 2nd by Sarah Chvilicek. Motion passed. Liaison to Germany – Thom Koehler to remain Webmaster – Jan Hare to remain • WCA banning dogs with DQs from entering WCA National events, submitted by Sarah Chvilicek, Jill Paige & Billie Thompson DQ’s at National Events - Recommendation: Require print on all Premiums: “Dogs with disqualifications are not eligible for competition” “DQF not applicable” COLOR – is generally obvious HEIGHT – This can be accomplished using a WCA Rep as we do for WCA Ratings. Example: If it is a Nat’l field event with the San Fran club then the field committee for that particular event appoints a WCA Rep for that event. That Rep is responsible for overseeing that the rules are followed. If one enters a dog with a questionable height then one takes their chances on being called out. We do not measure dogs before they enter the conformation ring. Dogs would not be measured before running a field event, obedience etc. Unless a height check is called by the WCA Rep or another entrant. If they enter the ring in conformation with a dog that is DQ for height it is possible they will get measured and excused. It’s also possible the judge rather than

THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 1 1 ▬ MONTHLY CONFERENCE MINUTES go through the wicket process may choose to ignore the height question but not use that dog for any awards at all. • In Conformation the use of a wicket is determined by the AKC licensed judge at judge’s discretion or by ringside request. • In Ratings it can be determined by the WCA Rep at the Reps discretion or other entrant or the committee • In Field it can be determined by a WCA Rep at the Reps discretion or other entrant or the committee Approved Wickets should be a requirement for clubs putting on any of our National events. If a wicket is present that might make people aware that the height issue is as important as color/coat type These are ideas to start the process hopefully by the later part of 2023. This would give the membership an opportunity to acclimate. Also giving the board time to identify clubs that have wickets presently or to secure approved wickets and address how to properly wicket. The use of Height Cards, DNA etc. can be left for investigation in the future if wanted. As Sarah pointed out, the Vizsla Club has a very good plan in motion. Before moving forward, the board needs more information and discussion as to whether or not AKC would even allow such wording as “Dogs with disqualifications are not eligible for competition” on a premium list, and what measures and what AKC would require be taken to taken to ensure the rule was followed. NEW BUSINESS • Judges’ selection proposal from Melissa Hampton Dear Sandy, John, and Billie, I am writing once again to request the National Show Committee consider updating the criteria regarding the Judging Selection for WCA Bench events judges’ eligibility. I am proposing the moratorium period be increased for both National and Futurity/Maturity to eight consecutive years from five for National judging and two for Futurity/Maturity assignments. With the current terms, we are seeing the repeated elections of the same judges as reflected for the last 13 years on the chart attached. When one can be elected to judge a F/M event and then a National two years later they are evaluating the same dogs - at our largest events - and we can predict the outcome before arriving onsite. I don’t believe the addition of the member’s opinion messages on the judges they nominated has been as supportive as initially suggested given the generic and uneducated statements about them. There are very few members voting annually compared to the size of our membership, which is compounding the repeated result. We are also seeing a decrease in the overall entry at these events compared to the dogs eligible, which may be an effect because of those elected to judge. I would also be in favor of an online voting ballot system that is submitted through the WCA member portal or another source to collect the data securely. I think the convenience of that modality would significantly increase the participation rate. Judges Eligibility 1. Any Judge who has judged at a National Specialty will not be eligible to judge another WCA event for five consecutive years. As an example, the 2015 Judge will not be eligible to judge the National Specialty or Futurity/ Maturity until 2021. These judges will be removed from the ballot once they have accepted an assignment. 2. Any Judge who has judged at a Futurity/Maturity event will not be eligible to judge another WCA bench event for two consecutive years. As an example, the 2015 Judge will not be eligible to judge the National Specialty or Futurity/ Maturity until 2018. These Judges will be removed from the ballot once they have accepted an assignment. The Board will appoint an ad hoc committee to review the proposal with past and present NSC committee chairs. The ad hoc committee will then present their findings/recommendations to the board. Idea for National Specialty/Futurity starting in 2027, submitted by Jennifer Martin. A) National held for the next 5 years at Purina. B) One Fut/Mat held at the National. Pro: • Expenses • Fewer judges, ribbons, and trophies. • NSC can groom a follow up. • Central, always our largest. • Larger Fut/Mat entry and it is an event, not giving participation prizes. • Negotiate dates years in advance. • Host clubs are folding. • Similar to Ardmore, same location, planning easier. • Membership knows exactly where and when and can budget accordingly. 2 weeks ago, we had a major snowstorm, roads closed and dangerous conditions. Weimaraners were judged at 8am. THE ENTIRE ENTRY WAS PRESENT! They WILL attend! I have spoken with NSC Sandy West and CJM. Both in FAVOR. MUST act soon. Con: Complaint’s initially, will accept the change of the BOD makes the changes. No polling, no survey monkey, but a move to save the club and its events. A proactive BOD. I do not think the field side will have an argument? Not my wheel house, so do not feel comfortable making statements or Assumptions. One location and the greatest number of entries? National Walking Gun Dog Championship sponsorship presented by Frank Sommer In the past AKC hosted and put on the National Walking Gun Dog Championship event, and has charged the WCA a $750 donation that was to pay for a sponsored dinner. This year the AKC has relinquished all responsibilities to a local club to host the AKC NWGDCH. The local club would like to use the WCA donation for expenses other than a dinner. The board determined that the WCA has no issue with the donation to be used as needed to hold the event. There being no further business, president John Bonner entertained a motion to adjourn. Motion made by Sarah Chvilicek to adjourn. 2nd by Wayne Cowles. Meeting adjourned at 9:52pm MT Respectfully Submitted, Vickie Margolis WCA Secretary

Motion passed. Because the WCA monthly Board meeting falls during the week of the National, it was decided to only attend to matters that need immediate attention/decisions made before the May meeting: Performance Committee submitted by Jill Paige From: Jill Paige To: [email protected] Cc: Breeder Referal- Billie Thompson; Cindy Moore - Exec Sec; Frank Sommer - Director; John Bonner - Pres; Julie Aune - Director; Robbe McAlexander - Treasurer; Sarah Chvilicek - VP; Susan Wallace; Wayne Cowles - Director I responded to a request that we received from Tina Poach about the WCA having an agility trial in OK in June. She has a committee, a trial secretary, and a judge. The trial secretary is with an organization called Red Dirt Agility Club which is also a non-profit. Here are some of the organizations that benefit from them - “ RDAC has made donations to some of the student organizations at the OSU Vet school, Boy Scout troops, FFA groups from local schools, and a junior ROTC group.” RDAC will provide the equipment and workers in exchange for half of the profits from the trial. Tina is a WCA member and is asking that a trial be held as a WCA agility trial since we currently only hold one, maybe two trials a year (clubs are allowed 12/year). Can we do a UR to approve this request so that Cindy can process the AKC application since waiting until the May board meeting means any application will be late (and getting a premium together, etc. will be almost impossible)? Thank you. --jill Because the deadline for submitting a request for a June trial has passed, Red Dirt Agility Club is asking for approval to hold an All-Breed Agility trial in June or July of 2025 under the WCA’s AKC events license. The Executive Secretary provided some history of the WCA allowing other organizations with WCA members to hold Agility events under the WCA umbrella. The Executive Secretary will provide the form for a formal application to Red Dirt Agility for completion to be submitted to the Board for approval. Field Committee submitted by Mary Brown The field committee met 4.1.24 at the request of the board to respond and provide recommendations on changes to the rules for holding classic field events. 1. WCA Field Classic Events With the introduction of AKC Regional Championship stakes, only a handful of clubs willing to host a Classic, and the declining entry in Classic events it was determined that increased flexibility in identifying stakes to hold during the event is essential. This is relevant to the Open All-Age, Amateur, and Open Gun Dog stakes, in particular. Please review the recommended changes to the Classic rules. Planned Activities: 1. If rule changes are approved by the board, provide education to clubs who may serve as host clubs for Classic field trials, as well as participants, and monitor whether this change increases entries or clubs willing to host events. The Board discussed the proposed changes and believed there were changes made that were not reflected in the document submitted. The liaisons will gather questions from the board and submit them to the Field Committee for clarification and request a complete marked-up document be submitted to the board for approval. All board concerns must be to the Liaisons and or John no later than Friday, April 19, 2024, so they will have time to give the comments to the Field Committee. Earlier this week, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a new rule for the importation of dogs into the United States. The rule, which becomes effective on August 1, 2024, will require all dogs to be at minimum six months of age prior to import into the U.S. The American Kennel Club (AKC) supports the aims of import regulations that seek to protect pet and public health, including those that seek to protect the United States from reintroduction of DMRVV (canine rabies). However, AKC is disappointed that the new rule is overly broad and disparately impacts purebred dog enthusiasts who import a personal animal or collaborate internationally, or dog event competitors that travel internationally. AKC will continue to share our concerns with CDC, and encourages those who believe they will be impacted negatively by the rule to share concerns with CDC at [email protected]. WHY IS CDC DOING THIS? Through its new rule, CDC is seeking to prevent and deter the importation of dogs carrying DMRVV (canine rabies) and other diseases or pathogens that threaten public health. Recent cases of such imports have been associated with falsified or fraudulent rabies vaccinations and/ or other required health and import documentation. In 2020, CDC observed a 52% increase in the number of dogs that were ineligible for admission into the U.S. due to falsified or fraudulent documentation. The CDC’s new rule cited several cases of rabies-positive dogs being imported into the U.S. by, or on behalf of, animal rescue groups that presented with documentation for those dogs that had been falsified. Unfortunately, many of the dogs with falsified paperwork were claimed as personal pets (not for transfer/resale), to fraudulently exploit a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) exemption that allows personal pets with demonstrated immunity to canine rabies to enter the U.S. before six months of age. Except for this exemption and several others, current law requires all dogs entering the U.S. for transfer (sale, adoption, etc.) to be at least six months of age. In the final rule, CDC estimates that, in addition to the human toll, the importation of one rabies-infected dog costs federal, state, and local governments $270,000 for conducting public health investigations and administering rabies medications to exposed persons. That number jumps to $11.6 million if an exposure results in one human death. UNDERSTANDING THE NEW REQUIREMENTS The new requirements are not legislation. Legislation requires passage in Congress and being signed into law by the President. Instead, the requirements are part of a final administrative rule promulgated under the CDC’s existing legal authority to take administrative action to protect public health. There are numerous examples of this type of action in recent years, including the establishment of bans on imports from certain countries during the COVID-19 crisis. Here is a one-pager explaining the key differences between the legislative and regulatory processes. The CDC considered two factors to be of utmost importance for protecting public health as related to importing dogs into the U.S.: The dog’s vaccination status and its country of origin. EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2024, ALL DOGS IMPORTED INTO THE U.S. ARE REQUIRED TO: 1. Appear healthy upon arrival, 2. Be at least six months of age, 3. Have an ISO-compatible microchip implanted for identification purposes, and 4. Be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form online submission receipt (no cost). THERE ARE ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FOLLOWING: • A dog entering the US from a rabies-free or low-risk country may enter the U.S. at any U.S. port. It also must be accompanied by written documentation that the dog has resided or otherwise been only in rabiesfree or low-risk countries for the six months before attempted entry into the U.S. • A U.S.-vaccinated dog entering the US from countries considered high-risk for rabies must be accompanied by a Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination form, and may enter the U.S. at any U.S. port. AKC Delegate Report Jennifer Martin Friday, May 17, 2024 www.akc.org/legislative-alerts/understanding-cdcs-new-rule-bringing-dogs-united-states/ THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 14 ▬

• A foreign-vaccinated dog from a high-risk country must have a reservation with a CDC-registered Animal Care Facility, be accompanied by a Certification of Foreign Rabies Vaccination and Microchip form and a CDC Dog Import Form online submission receipt, and titer results from a CDC-approved laboratory. Dogs without titer results will be required to quarantine. These dogs may only enter the U.S. at airports with a CDC quarantine station and a CDC-registered Animal Care Facility. • A U.S.- or foreign-vaccinated dog from a rabies-restricted country must be accompanied by a completed Certification of Foreign Rabies Vaccination and Microchip form and a CDC Dog Import Permit, and enter the U.S. only at airports with a CDC quarantine station and a CDC-registered Animal Care Facility. This is a limited exception for service and government-owned animals; otherwise dogs from a rabies-restricted country are not permitted to enter the U.S. AKC CONCERNS: DISPARATELY IMPACTING PUREBRED DOG BREEDERS AND COMPETITORS Rabies is a devastating virus that is nearly 100% fatal once clinical symptoms appear. AKC recognizes and supports the vital importance of protecting U.S. public and animal health, including our status as a DMRVVfree country. AKC also recognizes CDC’s goal of reducing opportunities for fraud that threaten this status, and the need to improve efficiency for the importation of dogs. AKC appreciates that the rule does improve and streamline some import documentation. Unfortunately, CDC’s approach does not recognize that law-abiding importers importing only a personal-owned dog represents a different risk profile than those importing dogs intended for transfer. The cases of rabies-positive dogs that have been imported into the US (as cited by CDC and noted above) were all related to fraud associated with the importation of dogs for resale. In developing its new rule, CDC did not differentiate between the public health risks represented by a law-abiding dog owner importing a personally owned animal that will reside with and be cared for by a documented individual, versus entities importing large quantities of dogs for unknown final consumers and that are already violating certain import requirements. CDC’s new rule also neglects to recognize the value of international collaboration among sportsmen and breeders of purebred dogs, particularly in preserving breeds at risk of extinction. For example, under the rule in effect through July, puppies that have reached four months of age and were vaccinated at three months of age, therefore considered fully vaccinated against rabies, may be imported by U.S. dog enthusiasts to begin training and assess future breeding quality. It also fails to recognize that some event competitors may temporarily travel between the U.S. and Canada, both of which are canine rabies-free countries, to compete with their dogs at events sanctioned by AKC or the Canadian Kennel Club. Problematic international animal rescue importations that were based on falsified or fraudulent documents resulted in the importation and distribution of rabies-positive dogs among the general population of the U.S. Conversely, purebred dog enthusiasts who import a personal animal or collaborate internationally, or dog event competitors that travel internationally, were not responsible for those importations and are not proven to create similar threats to the health of either the American public or our animals. CDC’s new rule nevertheless imposes new requirements and restrictions on these breeders and competitors, which AKC views as disparately impacting them. NEXT STEPS AKC will continue to share our concerns with CDC about the disparate impact that will be experienced by purebred dog enthusiasts who import a personal animal and by owners who travel internationally or regularly transit land borders with their dogs, and continues to encourage those who believe they will be impacted negatively by the new CDC dog import rules to express their concerns directly to CDC at [email protected]. AKC will also continue to provide updates on federal regulatory actions as developments warrant. For more information, contact AKC Government Relations at doglaw@ akc.org. HEARTWORM LIFECYCLE 101 Until recently, people thought that mosquitoes transmitted heartworms directly into the pet’s bloodstream via a bite. We now know that heartworm larvae (microfilariae) are deposited onto the surface of a dog or cat’s skin when the mosquito feeds. The larvae continue to mature on the skin, sometimes for several months. If male and female heartworms are present in an infected dog, they can mate and produce offspring. These tiny microfilariae release into the dog’s blood system. Female mosquitoes then ingest microfilariae during feeding, undergo further maturation in the mosquito and pass on when the mosquito feeds again. The transmitted larvae enter the dog’s or cat’s body and finish maturing in their pet host. Adult heartworms eventually reach the blood vessels of the heart and lungs. Microfilariae can be found in the blood of infected pets as early as six months post-infection, although, in most dogs, microfilariae appear seven to nine months post-infection. Adult heartworms have a life expectancy of five to seven years in dogs and up to two to three years in cats. Unlike dogs, most worms in cats do not survive to the adult stage, and infected cats are less likely sources of additional infections. Two factors influence larval molts and maturation: ambient temperature and Wolbachia pipientis, a bacterium that lives within the heartworm and is needed for normal maturation of heartworm larvae. The discovery of Wolbachia was crucial in improving heartworm treatment efficacy and successfully eliminating D. immitis. UNDERSTANDING HEARTWORM DIAGNOSTIC TESTS Even among heartworm experts, recommendations for diagnostic testing vary. We know that the earlier heartworm infections are detected in your pet, the better the chance of recovery with fewer complications. The current guidelines from the American Heartworm Society recommend antigen and microfilaria testing be performed annually on all dogs, regardless of geographic location. This might be new information for some pet owners located in areas that historically had low heartworm infections. These tests also help diagnose heartworms in cats. Veterinarians categorize diagnostic tests for heartworm in pets into two main categories: • Primary diagnostic tests include microfilaria and antigen tests. • Secondary diagnostic tests involve imaging and clinical pathology. Primary testing for microfilaria includes wet-mount direct examination and the modified Knott test or millipore filter test. It is essential to look for diagnostic purposes and assess microfilaria burden. In addition, some heartworm-infected pets can make antibodies that result in false negative antigen tests. Microfilaria can help confirm a diagnosis of heartworm infection in these patients. Heartworm antigen tests are the most sensitive method for diagnosing heartworm disease in dogs. Antigen tests detect the actual presence of adult worms and are almost 100% specific for infection. They’re also crucial in identifying dogs that have heartworms but don’t have circulating microfilaria. The tests are sensitive enough to detect one female worm! Antigen tests are more challenging in cats. That’s because cats tend to have far fewer worms in their systems, sometimes as few as one or two, compared to 30 or more in dogs. A positive antigen test in cats confirms heartworm infection; a negative test only lowers the possibility of infection but doesn’t 100% rule out infection. Other diagnostic tests include imaging such as X-rays and heart ultrasounds. Although neither test can definitively diagnose heartworm infection, veterinarians find radiography and echocardiography extremely useful for diagnosing heartworm infection and assessing its severity once diagnosed. Heartworm Disease Is Found In All 50 States Submitted by Debra Konkol, WCA HEalth Chair | Morris Animal Foundation | Updated March 21, 2024 Over 400 years ago, researchers first identified heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) in animals. For more than 100 years, veterinarians have known that D. immitis causes heartworm disease in dogs and cats. Despite advances in our knowledge of heartworm disease, including improved diagnostic tests and safer, more effective treatments, heartworm remains a significant health threat for pets. HEALTH THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 16 ▬

Further diagnostic tests, such as a complete blood panel, biochemistry profile and urinalysis, are essential for evaluating a patient before treatment and detecting underlying diseases that could affect treatment. However, the intention of these tests is not to diagnose heartworm disease. BEST FRIENDS - WOLBACHIA AND D. IMMITIS In the 1970s, scientists discovered bacteria living in the bodies of both adult and immature heartworms. It took another 20 years for scientists to understand that Wolbachia are not just passive passengers but play a crucial role in a worm’s survival. Due to this co-dependency, the discovery of Wolbachia has changed how veterinarians treat heartworm disease in dogs. The American Heartworm Society recommends that doxycycline, an antibiotic that kills Wolbachia, be given for one month before treatment for adult heartworms in dogs. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, regulatory agencies have not approved any drugs for treating adult heartworms in cats. However, antibiotic therapy directed against Wolbachia leads to decreases in all stages of immature heartworms. It might decrease the number of adult heartworms in dogs and cats and reduce the potential for respiratory complications. TREATMENT CONCEPTS Although living heartworms can trigger a significant immune response and damage blood vessels, dead and dying worms are even more destructive. Veterinarians need to customize the treatment of heartworms for each patient based on the presence or absence of clinical signs. We can simplify our understanding of heartworm treatments by breaking it down into three categories: • Adulticide treatment (including antibiotics against Wolbachia) • Microfilaricide treatment • Adjunct therapy Melarsomine is the only adulticide approved by the FDA. Although other treatment regimens have been described, the American Heartworm Society (2018) recommends a three-dose protocol as the most effective drug for eliminating adult heartworms in dogs. In contrast to older protocols, therapy aimed at killing microfilaria is initiated before adulticide therapy. Before starting therapy, veterinarians must determine the microfilaria burden, and for dogs with large numbers of microfilaria, they recommend pre-treatment with steroids and antihistamines. The use of adjunctive therapy with prednisone and antihistamines, as well as supportive care measures, are dictated by pre-treatment diagnostic tests, clinical signs and worm burden for dogs. One month after completing adulticide therapy, veterinarians should resume appropriate heartworm chemoprophylaxis for dogs and retest them for microfilaria. Another antigen and microfilaria test should be performed six months after the last dose of melarsomine to monitor treatment success. If this seems complicated, it is! That’s why the prevention of infection is so important. TREATMENT FOR CATS IS DIFFERENT As noted, the FDA has not approved any drugs for heartworm infections in cats. Heartworm-positive cats with mild symptoms respond well to small doses of prednisone to reduce inflammation. Cats with more severe infections will require supportive therapies, including intravenous fluids, drugs to treat lung and heart symptoms, antibiotics and, in some cases, surgical removal of the heartworms. PREVENTION IS KEY Although treatment of heartworm disease in dogs and cats has come a long way in the last 30 years, prevention is still best. There are many choices when it comes to heartworm preventives. Working with your veterinarian to decide which is best for your pet is essential. Have your pet tested annually to ensure the heartworm preventives work and provide optimal protection against infection. As a bonus, many heartworm medications may also prevent other parasites. You can find more details and strategies for treating heartworm-infected dogs and cats at the American Heartworm Society. Science to Save Pets with Heartworm – What’s New at the Foundation? Researchers recently discovered some mosquito species naturally carry Wolbachia bacteria, making them less likely to transmit viruses like dengue fever and Zika. Ongoing Morris Animal Foundation-funded research looks at the possibility of the same being valid for mosquitoes that transmit heartworms. They hope infecting mosquitoes with naturally occurring bacteria will help reduce the mosquitoes’ ability to spread heartworm disease. Another ongoing study examines which mosquitoes can harbor and successfully transmit the larval parasite that causes heartworm disease in dogs in the United States. Together, these studies are valuable to heartworm disease’s long-term regional management. No vaccine is commercially available to prevent heartworm disease in dogs or cats. However, this is a focused area of heartworm research today. Foundation-funded researchers are working to identify antigens needed to develop a vaccine against heartworm disease in dogs. If successful, this vaccine will protect against multiple D. HEALTH THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 17 ▬

immitis strains. Vaccination against the disease could also address another pressing problem – drug resistance to available heartworm medications in North America. A vaccine would provide an alternate way to protect your pets and reduce the growing threat of heartworm drug resistance. Lastly, a new paper published this past year using data from the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study showed some startling findings about heartworm preventive use in the Study cohort. The researchers found less than 40% of dogs in the Study were on heartworm-preventive medications at baseline. The team also reported that dogs were less likely to be on preventive if they were sexually intact, larger in height or receiving supplements. Conversely, if dogs had received vaccinations, been diagnosed with an infectious disease (other than heartworm), or had an ear, nose, or throat condition diagnosed at their last wellness check, they were more likely to be on preventive medications. The team’s findings are surprising since heartworm infections are spreading to new areas of the country, putting more dogs at risk for infection. Early detection can be lifesaving when it comes to heat injury and heatstroke! Watch for Signs of Heat Distress Recognizing the signs of heat distress is your first line of defense. Cool your dog down immediately if you see these signs! There are a lot of misconceptions on how to properly cool your dog. Cold water or even giving your dog ice water to drink is not bad! Using slushy ice water to wet your dog down with a towel can also help. Overheating can start subtly: your dog’s tongue lolls a bit longer and wider as the sides of their mouth pull back widely. You might notice your dog panting more than normal, stops paying attention to you, and/or starts to seek out shade. Pay attention to these changes! As the condition escalates, you might notice the following: • Excessive drooling • An unusually wide or flat tongue • Gums that have turned too red (or too pale) • Glazed eyes and unfocused attention • Unsteady or wobbly on their feet Heatstroke pushes a dog into the danger zone. It can also present as confusion, weakness, vomiting, or diarrhea. The most dangerous signs are the ones you can’t see — the internal body temperature soaring to levels that can damage organs. This is a medical emergency; if you suspect heatstroke, your immediate priority is to get to a veterinary hospital as quickly as possible. Shared from: Erica C. THE FOUNDATION STOCK OF A BREEDING PROGRAM By Dr. Carmen Battaglia This article first appeared in The Canine Chronicle, August 2009, and is reprinted with permission. Adversity does not build character, it reveals it. When it comes to the animals that make up the foundation stock of a breeding program and the plan for a particular individual, the dog world is chock full of folklore, rumors and general opinion. This mix of ideas confirms there is a general lack of agreement about the planning needed to find the best dog(s) in order to eliminate unwanted diseases and correct certain traits of conformation (Brackett, 1960). Such an approach requires planning and the willingness to think smarter using new ideas. With new ideas and improved management, breeders can make better selections and reduce the confusion caused by the uncertainties surrounding the risk of producing the unwanted traits and disorders that lie hidden within the pedigrees of the breeding stock. FOUNDATION STOCK The building blocks of a breeding program are called the foundation stock. These are the dogs whose traits and pedigrees serve as the base from which future generations will be produced. Therefore, these individuals should be healthy and as close to the breed standard as possible. Finding those who are best suited for this purpose must be done with care and study. Without a good understanding about the strengths and weaknesses of their pedigrees and how to manage risk, frustration becomes the inevitable. A few examples illustrate this point. Let’s begin with one of the most popular myths found among those who are the least skilled in selecting foundation stock. It is the notion that one breeding to a superior animal can be used to eliminate health problems. Occasionally this seems to work, but only because most litters do not show health problems by the time they are sold. This is what leads many into believing they are on the right track. Not seeing their pups after they have been sold misleads many breeders about the health and quality of their litters. Too often breeders rely on buyer feedback as the primary means by which they determine if they are making progress. If all of the pups from each litter were evaluated at maturity a different story might be told. In a mobile society that relocates with regularity it is less likely that puppy buyers will take the time to give breeders feedback. This causes much information to be lost particularly if there are health problems that have a late onset. In a majority of these instances, what a breeder could learn will go unnoticed. Another myth about selecting foundation stock is the folklore that surrounds the use of outcross breedings. In the past, the outcross was thought to be a useful breeding method for hiding or protecting breeders against recessive traits. This method was thought to improve risk aversion. Misguided about the outcross, many breeders used this method in an attempt to avoid genetic disorders. Others simply excluded those found to be affected or known to be a carrier. Neither of these approaches have proved to be very effective. Time, experience, and science have demonstrated that those who repeat outcross breeding in an attempt to dilute the detrimental effects of the recessive genes might hide the carriers, but only temporarily. The risk of producing them and their unwanted traits does not diminish because the recessive genes cannot be diluted; they are either present or not (Bell, 2000). Today we know that the principles described by Mendel (1850’s) can be used to make improvements. He discovered that the recessives can skip one or more generations before they reappear (Battaglia, 2009). This means that breeder should not rely on the rumor and folklore that surrounds many stud dogs. Instead they should do their own homework and learn about their direct ancestors (14) and the littermates of these ancestors. As the number of relatives studied increase, so do the opportunities to understand the complexities of the problems to be solved (Felix, 2005). Therefore, when pedigree analysis is coupled with breeder tools, the odds begin to shift in the direction of the breeder. The most successful breeders are central figures in their breed because they are the individuals who select the stud dogs, choose the method of breeding (outcross, inbreeding, and line breeding) and provide advice to the buyers about puppy management, AKC registration and micro-chipping. In short, they have distinguished themselves as being “in the know”. Seasoned breeder THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 24 ▬

understand that the job of making improvement is never done and that the process is not straightforward or easy. It has its ups and downs and a sampling of the unexpected. One of the challenges facing most is to understand the real meaning behind the time tested principle that “the strength of ones breeding program is based on the quality of its bitches.” Over the years this popular phrase has been passed down from father to son as folklore. The rationale and data necessary to support it did not surface until researchers interested in this subject began to study why this principle worked in practice. Hedhammer (1979) led the way when he conducted a longitudinal study using 401 litters (or approximately 2,500 German Shepherd Dogs). His study also demonstrated the importance of the dam’s role for improving structural soundness. He found that the dam’s influence on her offspring was greater than that of the sire by as much as ten percent. His study supports the notion that the dam is central to making improvements, particularly in the muscular skeletal areas. Hedhammer was not alone in his efforts to uncover the usefulness of this idea. Hutt (1979), a famous geneticist, in his book, Genetics for Dog Breeders, also refers to research that supports placing emphasis on quality dams in the breeding program. After years of effort, five principles have been associated with the selection of foundation stock: 1. Use only quality bitches. 2. Remember that the traits and characteristics seen in a puppy may change by the time it becomes mature. 3. Outcross breeding do not necessarily produce dogs free of recessive traits or lessen the risk of producing carriers. 4. One breeding will not concentrate enough genes to produce a litter of superior animals. 5. Success requires the combination of quality animals, good management and proper nutrition. The decision to select certain individuals as foundation stock begins with a careful study of their traits along with the relatedness of their close ancestors. Included in this process is an understanding of the modes of inheritance. Modes of inheritance are useful because they help in our understanding of how the desirable and undesirable traits are carried forward from parent to offspring. For example, a trait might be produced by breeding two carriers to each other or it might involve only one carrier acting alone. Many of the traits and diseases that are of interest to breeder seem to have a polygenic mode of inheritance (HD, heart disease, etc.) which means that many genes are involved. Without DNA test, managing the recessives becomes a more difficult problem. At the current rate of discovery, it appears that DNA tests for disorders caused by polygenes will be slow in coming. This should not discourage breeders because other protocols such as laboratory results, radiographs, and other phenotypic test, when combined with pedigree analysis, can still produce significant improvements in just a few generations. For purposes of this discussion hip dysplasia (HD) will be used to illustrate the importance of this process and how the quality of information can influence the outcome. HD is a polygenic disease that was first discovered in 1935. As the popularity of the working dog increased in the late 1940”s it became evident to breeders, dog owners, and veterinarians that the frequency of this disease would only be reduced when breeders learned how to manage the carriers in their pedigrees (Battaglia, 2009 a,b). Knowing that a dog has a defective hip based on a radiograph is only the beginning. The key to producing dogs with better hips involves an analysis of the fourteen ancestors in a three-generation pedigree along with the littermates of these ancestors. To help in this process, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has provided information about the hip status of animals and their offspring through a database search option (www.offa.org). They have also published the following guidelines and recommendations (Keller, 2007) for those interested in producing dogs with normal hips: THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ JULY 2024 ▬ 25 ▬

GUIDELINES AND RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Breed normal dogs that come from normal parents and grandparents. This recommendation places emphasis on the immediate three generations (50% genetic contribution from each parent, 25% from each grandparent and 12.5% from each great grandparent. 2. Breed normal dogs that have more than 75% normal siblings. This recommendation is more difficult because most animals in a litter become pets and are not radiographed. 3. Select dogs for breeding that have a record of producing a higher than breed average percentage of normal progeny. A stud dog with a superior track record (90%) normal progeny is a better choice than another with only 50% normal progeny. The OFA database can be used to search the records of stud dogs. 4. Choose replacement stock that exceeds the breed average. This recommendation assumes that either the breed club or the breeder collects this kind of data and can calculate the breed average. CONCLUSION In summary, three major considerations apply to the selection and use of foundation stock. First, their identification must be based on the quality of their conformation, health, and temperament. Second, the information collected about their ancestors should serve as convincing evidence that quality is present. Third, breeders must have the courage to use the new techniques and guidelines that have been developed. When these efforts are combined with pedigree analysis, the results will yield quality foundation stock whose offspring can be saved to further improve a breeding program. In a perfect world each breeder would have all of the information needed about all of the ancestors in their pedigrees and they would have a DNA test for each trait and disease. This is not yet possible; however there are more than 60 DNA tests available. For specific diseases and laboratories go to: www.breedingbetterdogs.com/articles. REFERENCES: Battaglia, C., 2009 a. Those interested in learning more about his articles and seminars should visit the website www. breedingbetterdogs.com wca breeder referral program A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service. A few things you might like to know about this service. I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies. The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and some have also done a little research on the breed. The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup, though I encourage them to consider greater distances. The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder. If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for any local clubs nearby as well. This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed on the list. Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed! Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state, email and phone number. 2024 WCA Western Field Classic & Field Futurity March 8 - 10, 2024 | Host: San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club Jones Corral, Spenceville Wildlife Area, Marysville, CA Chair: Sarah Chvilicek | Secretary: Kelly Bagley The San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club was proud to host the 2024 Western Field Classic at Jones Corral in the beautiful Spenceville Wildlife Area. The three-day event kicked off March 8th with our Grand Open Limited All-Age and Derby stakes, followed by the Field Futurity and Amateur Gun Dog stakes on the 9th, and ended with the Open Gun Dog and Open Puppy stakes on the 10th. We had a nice sized entry in each stake that allowed us to begin our days in the cool morning air and finish prior to the late afternoon sun. Our Open Gun Dog stake had the largest entry with 13 entries to make it a major! Many of the participants camped on site and we ended our days by the campfire with stories of the adventures that day accompanied by some delicious dinners prepared by one of our club members. Events like this would not be possible without the support of the Club Members, the Judges who give their time in the saddle, and all the volunteers who chip in to help things run smoothly. Many thanks to the gunners, bird planters, and to Amy Carpenter who fed all of us as if we were at a 5-star resort! Grand Open Limited All Age Winners GRAND OPEN LIMITED ALL AGE (4 Starters) Judges: Dominic Pettinato & Aaron Fausett The 2024 Western Classic kicked off bright and early with the Grand Open Limited stake. The weather was overcast with a nice breeze, perfect for these all-star dogs to show us their chops. The course began in the meadow and then up a steep incline to the tree line. There were several deadfall trees along the way, perfect for bird finding. Although the entry was small, these four did not disappoint. Brace 1: AVY - Stacie Roberts & ZUMA - Todd Yamamoto Both dogs had a clean break-away and had a nice forward movement pattern. Avy applied steady and intelligent application to hunting the course that produced 5 finds, all well mannered. Zuma also applied herself with purpose and had 2 clean finds of her own. Avy finished the course clean and Zuma was picked up after a stolen point. Brace 2: THOR - Todd Yamamoto & BYE Thor had a magnificent start with excellent forward movement. His run of the course had true all age gun dog range. Unfortunately, after a wild flush, he self-released and was picked up. Brace 3: RADAR - Todd Yamamoto & BYE Radar had a snappy start and began working the course quickly. His range was of special note and he had 4 solid finds as proof. He finished the hour with ease. OPEN DERBY (9 Starters) Judges: Terry Zygalinski & Dominic Pettinato After watching the Grand Open stake, the energy was high to start the afternoon with our Derby stake. We had a nice line-up of eager participants and the afternoon kicked off using the second half of the GOLAA course. The weather remained overcast and fairly cool. The course had a quick warm up across nice green landscape and up into the tree line for some bird work. Brace 1: DYNA - Esteri Hinman & BYRDIE - Dan Smith Both dogs had a nice forward start. They started out close together, but eventually that turned into working well together, ranging further, and covering different terrain. Byrdie had nice stamina and produced the first find. Dan fired his blank pistol and Byrdie was well-mannered. Both dogs finished the brace well. Brace 2: EMZ - Stacie Roberts & BYE Emz had a nice start and began working the course in a nice fashion. Due to being in season, she slowed a bit and Stacie decided to dismount her horse and walk the remainder of the course. Even though she applied herself well, it was a bird less effort for Emz. Brace 3: GERRY - Sue Fox & SODA - Shirley Nilsson Both dogs launched into action showing great energy and range. The smart application of the course by both dogs was impressive. Gerry had a nice find around 15 minutes in. Soda also had a nice find and held steady through the flush. Both finished the brace nicely and with energy. Brace 4: RONON - Stacie Roberts & TECATE - Shirley Nilsson It was a quick start for these young dogs. Both showing nice forward movement and ground speed. Both had moderate range with good application. Ronon had two finds but failed to establish point. Tecate showed wonderful ambition but had a birdless effort. Brace 5: LUCY - Sue Fox & TESS - Shirley Nilsson This brace started with lots of energy, but both dogs settled in and got to work. The speed and range of both dogs was impressive, and both hunted well. Tess had two solid finds and held through the flush. Lucy picked up the second of those finds and otherwise went birdless. FIELD FUTURITY (10 Starters) Judges: Aaron Fausett & Nick Shanto Day two began under overcast skies and cool temperatures. We had a stellar line up of young dogs eager to show their talents. The course had a fairly flat loop around to the tree line where plenty of tree deadfall gave the birds great cover. The cattle on the grounds also enjoyed the cover and many of the dogs had some great encounters with cattle for the first time! Brace 1: CLEARLY - Rachel Vitorelo) & KATIE - Kelly Bagley Both dogs broke away with excitement. They stayed rather close at first, but eventually started ranging a little further. Clearly had a wild flush that she did not chase but failed to point. Katie found three birds and also did not chase them. Both dogs ended the brace with nice energy. Brace 2: TESS - Shirley Nilsson & RONON - Stacie Roberts This brace started off with lots of energy. Tess was all business off the line and immediately began applying her skills to the course. She showed great independence and had 4 solid finds where she held through the flush. She also had lovely intensity on point. Ronon also had a solid find showing staunchness and great style. He had a strong finish to boot. Brace 3: BROOKLYN - Shiffra Steele & SODA - Shirley Nilsson Both dogs had a clean breakaway. Brooklyn staying a bit closer to her handler and Soda showing more independence and range. Brooklyn had a find early on and a second find near the end of her run. She was steady through the shot. Soda also had an early find followed by 3 additional finds showing steadiness and style on point. Brace 4: TECATE - Shirley Nilsson & MILES - Kelly Bagley Both dogs had a clean start and began showing independence. Miles had the first find of the brace but was out of sight of the handler and judges. Tecate had a find shortly after and was steady through the flush. She had a second find a bit later and showed high style on point. Miles had an athletic run and a strong finish but did not have additional bird contact. Brace 5: RAFFI - Kelly Bagley & EMZ - Stacie Roberts Both dogs had a decent cast off and began exploring the new terrain. Emz had the first find of the brace showing nice steadiness. She followed this nice bird work with the second find of the brace as well, showing the same steadiness. Raffi, not wanting to miss out on the fun, found the next bird and was steady through the flush and showing high style on point. She followed with a second and third steady find to finish the brace. Still fairly cool temperatures, but these dogs know how to heat things up with their enthusiasm to run! The Amateur Gun Dog stake proved to be one of the most fruitful stakes with lots of successes for the dogs. The Futurity dogs had moved most of the cattle out of the tree line so the focus was on birds, birds, birds! Brace 1: ONYX - Esteri Hinman & BRIAR - Kelly Bagley This brace started out with a bang. Off the line the energy was high and Esteri elected to pick Onyx up for interference. Briar continued at a slow pace at first, but quickly hit the tree line and began to hunt. She had three solid finds showing steadiness and an eager attitude to hunt. She finished the brace clean. Brace 2: KENNI - Shirley Nilsson & WYATT - Brandie Krein Both dogs got off the line clean with forward application. They continued to work the course with gun dog range and nice stamina. Kenni had two finds on course and showed nice staunch style on point. Wyatt had the opportunity to show his backing skills on one of her finds. Wyatt applied intelligence in his hunt and had his own steady find. Both finished the brace strong. Brace 3: RAFFI - Kelly Bagley & SINGAS - Keri Cassinelli Both dogs had a wonderful start showing independence and thoughtful application. Singas worked the tree line to produce 2 steady finds showing nice style. Raffi found a small covey that wild flushed giving her the opportunity to show her steadiness. Both dogs came upon a log on opposite sides for a divided find that each of them handled with steadiness. They finished strong by working the meadow once again as a team. Brace 1: ZUMA - Todd Yamamoto & WYATT - Brandie Krein) Both dogs had a snappy break away and hit the course with excitement. Zuma applied herself with long gun dog range that produced two finds in which she showed style and steadiness. Wyatt also showed long gun dog range and applied intelligence in seeking objectives. Unfortunately, Wyatt’s efforts did not produce any birds. Zuma finished her run with continued strong effort. Brace 2: CARMEN - Esteri Hinman & RADAR - Todd Yamamoto This duo had a clean break away and hit the ground with purpose. Radar took the lead with Carmen following close behind. After the first 15 minutes, Todd noticed Radar didn’t have his usual pep in his step and elected to pick him up. Carmen had a nice well-mannered find and Esteri decided to end her run on a high note and pick her up as well. Brace 3: SOBA - Beth Worrell & AVY - Stacie Roberts This was a fun duo to watch. Both dogs showed smart application of the course and great energy. Soba had two finds while on course that were described as rock solid with tons of style. During one of those finds, Avy failed to honor, and Stacie picked her up. Soba finished the brace with the same steady energy he started with. Brace 4: ONYX Esteri Hinman & THOR Todd Yamamoto This was an exciting brace to watch! Both dogs laid down a fantastic run with athleticism and thoughtful course application. Thor remained forward throughout the brace and was described as being at the extreme of gun dog range. He had two finds. On one find, the bird flushed right at him, and he took a snap at it. Onyx had a well-mannered find of her own and then took her hunting to the extreme. Esteri had to pull her tracker to locate her. Brace 5: KENNI Shirley Nilsson & BRIAR Kelly Bagley These two hit the ground running with lots of energy. Kenni had the first find and handled it with steadiness and style. She continued on to find two more birds and had nice clean work. Briar hit the tree line for her first find. Nice steady work there. On her second find, Briar decided to relocate herself as Kelly looked for the bird. Brace 6: BOOKER George Hinman & RAFFI Kelly Bagley It was a clean breakaway for these two. Both dogs had a short gun dog range at first, but opened up once they moved through the meadow and into the tree line. Booker had the first find, but it was out of sight of the judges. His second find was in order, but George ended up sending Booker in the wrong direction and he had to be scouted. Raffi worked the deadfall up in the tree line and had a stylish find. Kelly approached to flush the bird and it wild flushed instead. This proved too much for Raffi and she chased. Brace 7: SINGAS - Keri Cassinelli) & BYE Singas was in season, so she ran this brace solo. She had a nice forward cast off and began her hunt. While in the meadow area, she found her first bird. It flushed over her head and Singas remained steady. She moved down the slope and encountered her second bird. As Keri flushed and fired her blank gun, Singas broke for the chase. OPEN PUPPY (8 Starters) Judges: Nick Shanto & Aaron Fausett The last stake of the day was our Open Puppy. These young dogs did not fail to impress! Even though the temps were cool, the clouds disappeared, and the temperature began to rise. The pups ran in the heat of the day, but all handled it like champs. This was a challenging course for these young dogs, and it was super fun to see them having so much fun. Brace 1: DYNA - Deanna Acevedo) & RONON - Stacie Roberts Both dogs had a snappy break away and covered lots of ground quickly. Dyna worked high in the tree line and handled like a mature broke dog. Her movement was sleek and effortless. Ronon moved out to the front nicely and worked objectives well. Ronon did have bird contact and showed high style on point. Both pups finished strong. Brace 2: TESS - Shirley Nilsson & GERRY - Sue Fox This duo had a strong start and showed lots of energy. Gerry had nice forward movement and showed maturity with her course application. Tess, not to be outdone, had bird contact and handled it with maturity as well. Both dogs showed wonderful independence and finished with just as much energy as they started with. Both judges remarked that this was one of the best puppy braces they had ever seen. Brace 3: GOOSE - Corey O’Brien & GINGER - Esteri Hinman This was a fun duo to watch. Goose and his handler Corey were first timers and settled in nicely. Goose stayed fairly close but ventured out eventually and had a ton of fun. Ginger applied herself well and hunted steadily through the brace. Ginger had a nice roll in some fresh cow manure and then finished strong! Brace 4: LUCY - Sue Fox & TECATE - Shirley Nilsson This brace was off to the races from the start. Both pups hunted well and remained focused.
