Our breed wouldn’t thrive without so many dedicated Brittany volunteers and enthusiasts. A personal thank you to my family for helping the Minnesota Brittany Club with events over the years – specialty shows, hunt tests, and field trials, it’s truly a family sport for us. Last year we instituted quarterly ABC Board of Directors meetings for the benefit of membership – dealing with issues faster, more efficiently, and with greater transparency, rather than waiting for the Annual Meeting in November. Be sure to check out the ABC March BOD meeting minutes on the ABC website, under Inside ABC, then ABC news.Thank you, ABC Officers and Directors, for your time and support of the American Brittany Club and its members. I would like to thank Mary Brown for her service to the Breed Standard Committee, she was co-chair with Chris Ward-Weber, and took over when Chris passed last year. Thank you, Mary, for your dedication to the ABC. Mary has resigned, and my wife Dawn will take the position of Chairman. Dawn served on the committee for many years under the leadership of Judy Tighe, and continued with Chris and Mary. Dawn, along with her committee, will serve the ABC as guardians of the Brittany Breed Standard. Please join me in a huge Thank You to Julio Rodriguez for his incredible dedication to the website, and all the work he has done with transitioning from the old site, helping members navigate their membership and the website, making revisions to changes due to membership feedback, and moving the website forward into an enjoyable and educational tool for ABC members. HEALTH & GENETICS COMMITTEEINTRODUCTIONLaryngeal paralysis is a condition of growing concern among Brittany owners and veterinarians. Although once considered rare, it’s now recognized that Brittanys, like several other breeds, are predisposed to this disorder, especially as they age. This overview provides essential information on recognizing signs, treatment options, and what families can expect after surgery.BREATHING PROBLEMS IN BRITTANYSBrittanys are increasingly reported to develop breathing difficulties due to laryngeal paralysis. Unlike breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, there is no genetic test for Brittanys, so the condition is classified as idiopathic and considered part of the aging process. Factors like leash-pulling and certain training methods may also play a role in its development.WHAT IS LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS?Laryngeal paralysis (LarPar) is the loss of normal function of the larynx, the structure in the throat that controls airflow. When the nerves and muscles stop working properly, dogs may experience noisy breathing, a change in voice, and difficulty during exercise or excitement. In older dogs, this condition may be part of a broader syndrome known as Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy (GOLPP), which involves degeneration of multiple nerves and can affect overall mobility.RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS• Noisy or raspy breathing• Change or loss of bark/voice• Coughing, especially during eating or drinking• Exercise intolerance or collapse in hot weatherTREATMENT OPTIONSSeveral surgical approaches exist, but the Unilateral Arytenoid Lateralization (“Tieback”) procedure is considered the most effective. This involves placing a suture to hold one side of the larynx open, improving airflow while minimizing the risk of aspiration. The surgery is minimally invasive and should be performed by a board-certified veterinary surgeon. Post-surgical care includes using a harness instead of a collar, minimizing barking, feeding meatball-shaped meals, and avoiding swimming or strenuous activity for several weeks.POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONSMinor complications can include incision infections, fluid buildup (seroma), voice loss, and temporary coughing. More serious risks involve aspiration pneumonia or breakdown of the suture, which may require additional surgery. Careful post-operative protocols, such as fasting and medication, help reduce aspiration risks.QUALITY OF LIFE AFTER SURGERYDespite the seriousness of laryngeal paralysis, most dogs recover well following surgery and enjoy improved quality of life. Even cases of aspiration pneumonia are increasingly treatable, and the majority of Brittanys live comfortably after the procedure. For More InformationFor additional resources, visit: https://www.allaboutgolpp.com/Author, Sandra Sargent DVM DACVDUnderstanding Laryngeal Paralysis in BrittanysDiagnosis, Treatment, and Quality of LifeIllustration thanks to OREV Specialty Vet Care Portland, OregonThe American Brittany ▬ 6 ▬ April 2026
HEALTH AND GENETICSWHAT IS LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS? Laryngeal paralysis, often called LarPar, is a condition where the muscles and nerves that open the larynx (voice box) do not work properly, leading to partial or complete airway obstruction and difficulty breathing.ARE BRITTANYS COMMONLY AFFECTED BY LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS? Laryngeal paralysis is typically associated with larger breeds, but Brittanys can also be affected. Growing awareness has led to more frequent recognition of this disorder in Brittanys.WHAT IS GOLPP AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO BRITTANYS? GOLPP stands for Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy. It describes a syndrome seen in older dogs, involving degeneration of several nerves including those controlling the larynx. While it’s not yet clear if Brittanys with laryngeal paralysis have GOLPP, research continues on the broader nerve involvement in this breed.WHAT ARE THE EARLY SIGNS OF LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS IN BRITTANYS? Early signs can be subtle and include voice changes, noisy breathing (especially when excited or exercising), and exercise intolerance. Because symptoms develop slowly, they are often mistaken for normal aging or other conditions.HOW IS LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS DIAGNOSED? Diagnosis typically involves a detailed history and physical examination by a veterinarian, possibly followed by specialized procedures to visualize the larynx and assess its movement during breathing.CAN LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS BE TREATED? Surgical intervention can significantly improve quality of life, especially if performed by an experienced veterinary surgeon. However, surgery carries risks and is best considered before the disease reaches an advanced stage. There are currently no medical treatments that can restore normal airway function once severe obstruction occurs.WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT MY BRITTANY HAS LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS? If your dog shows signs such as noisy breathing, voice changes, or difficulty exercising, consult your veterinarian promptly. Early diagnosis and intervention can make a significant difference in your dog's quality of life.HOW DOES LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS AFFECT A DOG'S BREATHING? The muscles that open the airway fail to function, causing the airway walls to collapse inward during inhalation. This makes breathing difficult, and in severe cases, can lead to suffocation if not treated.IS LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS PAINFUL FOR THE DOG? The condition is typically not painful, but it causes significant discomfort, anxiety, and distress due to difficulty breathing, especially during activity or in hot weather.CAN BRITTANYS LIVE A NORMAL LIFE AFTER DIAGNOSIS? With timely diagnosis and appropriate surgical intervention, many Brittanys can enjoy improved quality of life. Because Brittanys are smaller than some breeds commonly affected, they may live longer with the effects of generalized neuropathy, but ongoing care and monitoring are important. 2025 ABC National Gun Dog ChampionshipDECEMBER 3-7TH 2025 | BOONEVILLE, ARReported by Dawn Droel | Photos by Flashpoint Photography & DesignThe 2025 ABC National Gun Dog Championship in Booneville AR did not disappoint! What a talented line up of dogs and handlers, from across the country. The grounds were groomed beautifully, and the birds were flying in coveys. The esteemed judges this year were Rodney Albin and Ron Harling Jr. We appreciate Harling stepping up to judge as the scheduled judge had an emergency and couldn’t attend. We so appreciate the continued, unwavering support of Purina and Garmin. Let’s take care of the Thank You’s, you all are MUCH appreciated – Thank you to the Trial Chairman Bob Bakas, Trial Secretary Teresa Richmond, and the Trial Committee Members – Teresa Richmond, Richard Beaver, Darlene Dow, Rebecca Walters, and Trophy Coordinator Linda Thomas. Thank you Dog Wagon driver Ed Kostka, Dog Wagon Hostess Linda Thomas, Course Marshall Dan Campbell, Gallery Marshalls Teresa Richmond, Bobbie Sigmund, Lisa Pollock (and whoever else wore the orange vest), Rebecca Walters for coordinating Camping and Hay, Matt Weldele for Fundraising Coordinator, Jessica Carlson for photos, Paula and her crew for the food, and Jerry from the Blue Mountain Group for tending to the birds. The schedule was packed with wonderful parties – the evening before the Championship started the Calcutta was held, always a fun event. The next three evenings we spent honoring NGDC GFC7 GAFC4 RFC8 RAFC9 FC AFC My Lil Classic Mercedes, AKA“Cedes” – we started with a truly wonderful party sponsored by “Cedes’” owners Amanda and Richard Beaver celebrating “Cedes” 2024 National Gun Dog Championship win, the second night “Cedes” was awarded the Magnum Masked Man Award (dinner sponsored by Purina & the Burchett’s was much appreciated), and the third evening “Cedes” was presented with the Garmin Award (fantastic dinner sponsored by Garmin). This year the National Championship stakes were first, with the Gun Dog Championships to follow. The NGDC started on Wednesday, December 3rd, and due to a couple morning fog delays concluded on Sunday, December 7th, with 47 entries, daytime temperatures ranged between low 30’s to high 40’s. Not especially desirable for the spectators, but the dogs and horses enjoyed the cool weather. On a personal note, I’m grateful to Lisa Pollock for filling in for this Reporter the first day, as we were unable to navigate our driveway due to an early season snow. We pulled in at the end of the first day of judging, and I was able to finish up reporting the stake.I enjoyed my first time as Reporter, noting exceptional work from our nations finest Brittanys. Here’s the running:WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3RD, 20251A REBELFLAME BRAZEN DANICA “DANI” H: SCOTT JOHNSON1B BAPTIZED IN BOURBON “FINN” H: MARK AUMANFirst brace broke at 7:46 am under partly cloudy skies, at 33 degrees. There was a good frost on the ground that quickly started melting as the sun got higher in the sky. Both dogs took off nicely and worked the many objectives they were given. At 9, as we headed down the hill before the sharp left, Finn was seen standing in the high cover. Mark flushed a huge covey for Finn who had beautiful style and intensity as birds lifted. At 15, Finn scored his second find on the left before the barking doghouse. We crossed the road at 28, both dogs took to the right edge. Dani appeared to point but moved on. Finn passed by and both dogs eventually were found standing for a divided find. We were halfway through the cotton fields at 40. Scott called point on the left side of the hedgerow just after the island. Meanwhile, Finn returned from a cast on the right. He pointed on the right side of the hedgerow. Birds were produced for Finn, but Dani had no birds after relocation. Both dogs shortened as we headed to the double red gate. At 57, Dani had a find on the cross hedgerow along the river bottom. Both dogs finished the hour.2A ST CLAIR’S PRINCE OF DARKNESS “OZ” H: SCOTT JOHNSON2B MOLLY’S M&M CRUNCH-N-MUNCH “MUNCH” H: DIANE VATERWe broke at 8:53 am, the sun shining brightly and a light breeze picked up. Both dogs took off for the far edges, Munch on the right, Oz on the left. Point was called for Oz on the left edge at 8. Scott seemed to do a complete search for birds, but when none lifted, he decided to relocate a very hesitant Oz. Unfortunately, Oz knocked a couple that were dug in. Meanwhile, Munch was ahead after the road split. He pointed on the right side of the cross hedgerow, but no birds were produced. He was sent on and made a nice forward cast towards old 109. After we crossed 109, Munch was still very forward, headed toward the island along the right side of the road. He was found standing and an enormous covey was flushed as he stood tall. When released he pushed forward again, trying both sides of the road before settling on point at the end of the island on the left. He was well off the edge given the stiff wind coming from the front. Diane moved him up. He took a few steps and locked up tighter. Another covey was produced. Munch was sent into the bowl where he continued his strong forward race. At 41, Munch took the right edge and disappeared. Scout found him standing in the thick brush and another covey was flushed. Munch continued to press forward. Out in the Parish field he had his final find at 57. Time was called as he was released.3A STELLAR FIFTY ONE “STELLA” H: BOB BURCHETT3B KID’S ROYAL CASEY “CASEY” H: BRUCE HEITERThese two 9-year-old littermates broke on to course 3 at 10:20 am. Within 2 minutes, both were found standing at the first mott along the road. All was in order and they were released again. These two seemed to enjoy their family reunion! At 6, Stella pointed and Casey backed at the cover before “Richard’s swimming hole”. At 12, Bob saw Stella pointed on the far side of the ditch before the big culvert. It turned out she was backing Casey who was standing tall on the other side of the ditch. Bruce flushed another big covey. After the short cut turn off to camp, point was called for Stella on the right side before the hairpin turn. While Stella had this find, Casey was just a couple minutes up the road with his own find. Across Lick Creek, both dogs dug on the left after the pavilion. They went missing for a while but were returned to the front at Gas Well Hill. At 41, at the bottom of Gas Well Hill Stella established point and Casey was very quick to back. Unfortunately, Stella lost composure and was leashed. Casey finished the hour at a shorter range. He had a stop to flush at time. The afternoon braces started at 47 degrees, with some sunshine. As the afternoon went on, clouds thickened and temperatures started to drop. 4A TEQUILA CHICA BONITA “CHICA” H: RICHARD BEAVER4B ROYAL FLUSH SIR OLIVER TWIST “OLLIE” H: MARK AUMANBreakaway at 12:46. Chica was on the board first at 5 with a nice covey of birds flushed for her in a thicket just off the right side of the path as we headed to the first oak. Both dogs were in and out of pocket down the hill and toward the barking doghouse. At 19 Ollie pointed on the right before Lick Creek with Chica backing. No birds were produced and dogs were sent on. Ollie went missing again after we crossed the road while Chica continued to press forward. Ollie showed again as we headed east in the cotton fields. Chica showed up and was cast on the left side. She established point in the big island. It took Richard some time to find the birds in this tangled mott, but he did without any bloodshed! While these birds were being worked, Ollie was ahead on the next tree line with his own find. As Chica tried to catch the front, she was stopped by birds at 49, along the left edge before the double red gates. At 57 along the river bottom, Richard flushed another huge covey for Chica at the cross hedgerow. She finished the hour, very strong to the front. 5A BOUDREAUX’S SARATOGA TIPSTER “TIPPY” H: SCOTT JOHNSON5B TURNING POINTS ROLLING IN THE DEEP “HANNAH” H: JULIE NELSONWe broke away at 1:57. Both dogs broke to the front nicely. At 10, both dogs were found standing on the right side of Riblins 2025 ABC NATIONAL GUN DOG CHAMPIONSHIPThe American Brittany ▬ 11 ▬ April 2026
Bottoms. All was in order and dogs were sent on. After crossing old 109, Hannah had a find along the river edge while Tippy was sent straight up the course. Tippy had her own find in the thick brush on the left side of the path. She was sent on and continued her forward progress, using both sides of the course. Hannah pointed again at the island on the right side along the road, but lost composure and was leashed. Tippy had a beautiful covey find on the right side before entering the bowl. In the bowl, Tippy showed well, but was leashed halfway around after knocking a covey on the right side.6A PINEY RUN CANDY “CANDY” H: BEN LORENSON6B STARLIGHT’S IRIS IN MERCURY RISING “IRIS” H:BOB BURCHETTBreakaway at 2:58 pm. Iris’s bid was over quickly as she failed to back Candy at the first mott. Candy pointed again before Richard’s swimming hole. Candy made a few big casts and worked the country hard. At 17, she moved off to the left side of the road and pointed hard. Ben relocated her and was able to flush the running covey. At 38, below Gas Well Hill Candy pointed in open cover. Ben wasn’t able to find birds and relocated. More running birds were flushed and she was sent on. At 51, Candy had another find at the mott on the left where the road splits going back to camp. She finished the hour with a non-productive at 57.DAY 2 – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 04, 20257A TEL TEX CISCO “CISCO” H: SCOTT JOHNSON7B PALMETTO POINTE’S TRU GRIT “ROOSTER” H: BEN LORENSONThe gallery was a bit more sparse than normal as it was a blustery day, 34 degrees, overcast, and damp with almost no wind as we cast away at 7:45am. Dogs broke away and were checking out both sides well to the front. “Rooster” established point at 12min, high and tight, Ben had no problem putting up a nice covey. Cisco had gone on ahead and had his own find at 18 before the turn going to the barking doghouse, no birds were found, Scott relocated Cisco and then moved on. Meanwhile shot was heard up ahead for Rooster at 20, with apparently good manners. “Cisco” didn’t waste any time, and again established point, dead serious with high head and tail, unfortunately it was another non-productive for Cisco and Scott picked him up. While busy with Cisco, Rooster had another find and non-productive. As we caught the front, and were coming to a cut through, a herd of deer was on the other side, Ben wasted no time getting Rooster under control and waited for the deer to clear out. After the double red gates going into the River Bottom Fields, Ben and Rooster headed to the left and Rooster finished Course 1 successfully. BRACE 88A YORK COUNTY SAM I AM “SAM” H: BEN LORENSON Sam was by himself, as Jojo came in season and dropped to the bottom of the stake. Sam and Ben broke away at 9:04 on Course 2, Sam industriously worked the right side taking a nice edge down Riblin Bottoms.“Sam was found on point at 12, standing with nice manners on a small covey. After making the loop by the old iron bridge, Sam hung a right and booked it down the tree line, showing himself periodically. The wind picked up a bit and blew in a nasty wintery frozen mix as we were heading out of the Fish hook. Point was called in Island Field, on a large island to the left, Sam handled a large covey like a pro. Going through the inner loop after Parrish Field Sam was working with speed and purpose as time was called. BRACE 99A WINGRA’S INDY-GO! “INDY” H: ED TILLSON9B WIND MOUNTAIN TEQUILA SENORITA ESPECIAL “RITA” H: STEVE CHANGWe spent the break eating donuts in the sleet and cold and blowing wind, but hey, who can turn down donuts in any weather. We cast off at 10:27, thoroughly wet and miserable as sleet turned to rain. 100 yards off the breakaway, in the gauntlet, Indy had a find to the right, called by Jessica, as Ed had ridden past. Another 50 yards up, Rita had a point on the left, Steve didn’t produce a bird, so he and Rita went on. Another three minutes and Indy again went on point, with Rita honoring. Not finding birds, Ed relocated Indy and Indy stopped again, after a time. Ed grabbed Indy to move on and birds went up. With Indy not at fault, he was released. At 10, both dogs had a find, handlers easily put birds in the air, dogs had good manners, shots were fired, and dogs were released forward. Another 5 minutes along, Indy again went on point, Ed flushed up a small covey, Indy was stellar, and was sent on. Rita came back and had a point in the same location Indy just vacated, and Steve put up 2 more quail in front of Rita. All was well. At 22 “Indy” went on point on the left hand side of the road along the tree line, Ed had trouble producing birds, and attempted to relocate Indy, unfortunately no birds were found. Meanwhile, Rita had a successful find up ahead on Mario’s Hill, while Indy caught the front and both dogs went on. Going along the bottom of Gas Well Hill, Rita went on point to the left and Indy on point to the right. Steve got his birds up first and grabbed Rita, Ed put up birds in front of Indy. The pair shot off together, being released after their finds, with 18 minutes left in the race. Dogs hunting nicely together, taking the right hand side of the road down the tree line past the rock pile. Unfortunately, Indy was seen under birds with 5 minutes left in the run. Rita finished up the hour with no mishaps. BRACE 1010A PINEY RUN GEM “GEM” H: BEN LORENSON10B MK’S MY LIL CLASSIC “NOVA” H: SCOTT JOHNSONThe precipitation stopped before the afternoon braces, however it was still overcast and humid/damp, still not reaching 40 degrees. At 12:45 the dogs were released on Course 1 and shot out strong to the right, working edges nicely. Nova went on point by the big cedar tree on the right at 13, Nova’s manners were a bit lacking while Scott flushed, but she held tight when birds flew, one going The American Brittany ▬ 12 ▬ April 2026
right over her head. Gem had a find at 18, handling nicely the small covey Ben put in the air. Dogs continued forward on the right-side heading to the Cotton Fields, and both slammed on point at 28 under some cedar trees, birds flushed easily and dogs had great manners. Gem went on point in-between the cotton fields, tail high. Gem was relocated by Ben and unfortunately got under a bird on her relocation. Meanwhile up ahead, Nova had a clean find, and was released by the scout to go on. Nova was working methodically, Scott chose to leash her with 8 minutes remaining. BRACE 1111A PINEY RUN RUBY “RUBY” H: BEN LORENSON11B FIRESTARTER BORN AMONG THE STARS “GLORY” H: SHAWN MACLEOD We broke away at 2:00 on Course 2, dogs hit the course hard and to the front. Glory went on point at 6, Shawn wasn’t producing birds, and after relocating “Glory” with no success, they went on. Ruby went on point at 10 with head and tail high, Shawn thought he had a handle on Glory but she doubled back and failed to back Ruby. Ben struggled with producing a bird, so relocated Ruby, she immediately dug into the scrub and re-established point, Ben going in and easily producing birds this time. On the Fish Hook, just past the Old Iron Bridge, at the edge of the emerald green turf grass, Ruby established a lovely point, again head and tail high, all went well. Ruby was through the Fish Hook, and heading through Island Field on the right-hand side before we crossed the road in the tree line Gem went on point and Ben flushed a small covey. At 45 going around the Horse Shoe, towards the backside, Gem went on point. Judge cautioned Ben to watch his dog as Gem moved herself forward a bit. Ben made the decision to pick her up. BRACE 1212A SARADAC’S TEQUILA SHOOTER “JIGGER” H: SCOTT JOHNSON12B SOVEREIGN’S HANKY PANKY “OLLIE” H: BOB BURCHETTLast brace of the day, on course 3, broke away at 3:11 after a short break, with very few people in the gallery on this dreary afternoon. Dogs got through the Gauntlet with no foul and found their rhythm going forward. Coming up to the Pavillion, while Jigger was taking a nice line on the left, we saw deer to the right side. Ollie established stylish point at 24 near the pavilion where the deer went through. After much flushing by Bob no birds were produced, and “Ollie” was moved on. Ollie had a nice run forward taking the lead down lines, handling easily. Ollie went on point near Lover’s Bend and once again birds couldn’t be produced, and his run ended. Scott elected to pick up Jigger shortly after, ending our day at 3:55. Turns out Jigger had an injury from getting tangled in the vines. 3RD DAYBRACE 1313A CRACKER JAX II “JAX” H: BEN LORENSON13B ASTRA LUCKY PEPPER SEVEN “GHOST” H: SCOTT JOHNSONWeather was a balmy 37 degrees, very damp and humid. But off we went with a breakaway at 7:43 on Course 1. Both dogs shot off and were content being far to the front, taking some great edges on both sides of the road. Just before the Barking Dog House, Jax had a find at 12, a beautiful covey went up as Ben got off his horse. Immediately after Jax’s release, Ghost went on point in a group of cedar trees. Ben took Jax on, 150 yards on the other side of “Ghost’s” clump of cedars, established point, but ultimately was a non-productive. Meanwhile, Scott was attempting to flush for Ghost, when the judge pointed out a dead bird, Scott moved Ghost on from the situation. At 25, Ben picked up Jax after a questionable bird situation. At 32 just beyond the curve before the Old Cotton Fields, Ghost had a lovely find with great manners. At 41, Scott spotted Ghost under a bird on an island of trees to the left before the River Bottom Fields, ending her run. BRACE 1414A SOVEREIGN’S LEGENDARY RASCAL “ALVIN” H: BOB BURCHETT14B SIGBRIT’S DREAMS OF GROUSE “WHITEY” H: RICHARD BEAVERThere was a mishap before the official breakaway on Course 2, and the wrong dog was released by Richard’s scout. Richard made the decision to scratch the dog, and Alvin broke away by himself at 8:47. Alvin went on point at 11 in the woods on the right-hand side, no birds were produced and Alvin was moved on. Alvin went on point again at 15, just before the Fish Hook, a single bird was produced, with Alvin having flawless manners. At 20 Bob elected to pick up Alvin as he wasn’t running his normal race. BRACE 15 15A RU-JEM’S GRAND TOUCH BOURBON “TOUCH” H: REBECCA WALTERS15B SOVEREIGN’S CROSSCREEK LEGENDARY LRRP “RANGER” H: DIANE VATERDogs were released on course 3 at 9:33, with a find for Touch just 30 seconds into the run. He handled his bird well and caught the front. Ranger went on point at 4 minutes in, no birds produced, and he was moved on. Both dogs got out of the Gauntlet with no harm done. Touch was out of pocket for an extended period of time, and the judge gave Rebecca her Receiver so she could locate Touch. Diane elected to pick up Ranger at 22, ending our morning early. BRACE 1616A CAMPBELL’S WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU “BUBBA” H: BOB BURCHETT16B BOURBON ON THE ROCKS “ROCKY” H: BRUCE HEITEROur first brace of the afternoon breaking away at 12:44 had a warmer temperature of 45 degrees and a 5 mph wind. These dogs broke away well to the front, working one side and then the other like pros. They made big casts but continued to show themselves to the front. Just before the Old Cotton Fields in a cedar tree line, at 29 Bubba went on point, birds flushed easily, and Bubba went on to catch the front. The judge told Bruce that in an island off to the left in the Old Cotton Field Rocky was under a bird, ending his run early at 36. Bob and Bubba took off to the left entering the River Bottom Fields, with 3 minutes left Bob elected to pick up Bubba as he ran out of gas. BRACE 17 –17A SARADAC’S DANGEROUS DIAMOND CAPER “CAPER” H: LISA POLLOCK17B YORK COUNTY CRUIZER “CODY” H: BEN LORENSONDogs broke away at 1:55, heading out on Course 2. Caper went on point 9 minutes in, birds weren’t produced so she was relocated and after a short trip down the hedge row she pointed, and a small covey of quail was produced by Lisa. On their way to catch the The American Brittany ▬ 13 ▬ April 2026
front, Caper slammed on point at 16, with Lisa easily lifting a small covey. Again, catching the front, we all went screaming around the Fish Hook only to find Ben electing to pick up Cody, he’s still figuring out the grounds as this is his first time here (Cody, not Ben). Caper established point at the end of the Fish Hook at 23, as Lisa couldn’t produce any birds she relocated Caper, but Caper made the decision to go on, Lisa complied. A minute later, Caper establishes point on a well-known bird hot spot. Unable to produce birds, Lisa relocates Caper, a few times, and up comes a bird ending Caper’s run. BRACE 18 18A SIGBRIT’S NOT A TRACE OF RUST “RUSTY” H: SCOTT JOHNSON18B AK’S COLOR IN DISGUISE “ELI” H: MARK AUMANDogs broke away at 2:49 from the Bridge. They ran through Course 3 running and hunting with enthusiasm, sometimes together, other times independently. Despite the sun making a brief appearance, the birds were aloof. At 40 Rusty had a stop to flush in an island just before the Beaver Dam. Eli had his own stop to flush at 47. Mark elected to pick up Eli. Scott and Rusty finished the hour, without a find. 4TH DAY (Morning braces were canceled due to fog delay)BRACE 1919A TURNING POINTS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS “SAMMY” H: JULIE NELSON19B DIAMOND HILL DANGEROUS BIG BANG “LEONARD” H: LISA POLLOCKThe sun took it’s time burning off the fog, our first brace of the day didn’t break away until 11:51. It was full sun and the temperature near 50 degrees, a lovely afternoon ahead. Sammy and Leonard hit the course hard, taking edges in front. At 10 Sammy was picked up after mishandling a stop to flush. At 19, just before the Old Cotton Fields, Leonard was seen on point along the tree line, covey went up, Leonard with excellent manners. At 36 Leonard was on point on the edge of an island in the middle of the Old Cotton Fields, Lisa produced a bird, and Leonard was released. At 40 Leonard was standing firm on another tree line, judge pointed out the running bird, Lisa shot, Leonard and Lisa continued on their way. Leonard was serious about his job, confidently hitting edges, and was found up front on point in the middle of the field in the scrub, about 300 yards from the bridge, Lisa attempted to flush, but time was called and she elected to collect Leonard, with a nice clean run. BRACE 2020A INDIAN OUTLAW “P” H: MARK AUMAN20B B & T’S SONNDANCE KID ROCK “ROCKY” H: TRASA FOWLERCastaway was at 1:05 on Course 2, dogs were cruising along, Rocky making some big moves, P staying a bit more collected. Both dogs went around the Fish Hook and just past the Old Bridge the dogs dug into the corner, Rocky came back out first and we moved on. P surfaced and Mark elected to pick up. Rocky headed through Parrish field, cruising along the large island on the left. Trasa called point and rode quickly to the island, shot, and moved Rocky on. Rocky went on to make a large move along the tree line. His scout came up and consulted with Trasa, and went off to find Rocky, which he did. Scout called point at 53 along the road on the far side of Parrish Field. Trasa pointed out the running birds, flushed and shot, all handled well by Rocky. Rocky was released and finished the run strong. BRACE 21 21A SOVEREIGN LEGENDARY POWER “BRIGGS” H: BOB BURCHETT21B GLADE RUN GHOST “GHOST” H: MARK AUMANBrace cast off from the Bridge at 2:25, and it was over by 2:26, shortest brace of the stake, the score being gauntlet 1, dogs 0. Briggs established point, Bob started to ride over. Not noticing Briggs, Ghost flew through the area, and not having had enough time to turn on his nose, he put birds up as he went. Briggs couldn’t resist as it looked like fun and off, he went also on a merry chase.DAY 5 (Another fog delay today, but only for an hour) BRACE 2222A RED GRANITE’S HENRY WILL BE A STAR “HENRY” H: BOB BURCHETT22B MY LIL CLASSIC MERCEDES “CEDES” H: RICHARD BEAVERAnother overcast day, humid and damp, almost no wind, a balmy 43 degrees. Dogs did a lovely job up front, providing entertainment as they worked the edges. The dogs were gathered up after the barking doghouse to make the S curve and then both shot off into the next field. The dogs took the far bottom left edge of the Old Cotton Fields, Richard went off to the left by an island expecting to find Cedes on point, but she wasn’t there. Both handlers called point at 37, but when we got to the dog buried in the scrub, we discovered it was Cedes, Bob and Henry were still on the move. After The American Brittany ▬ 14 ▬ April 2026
attempting to flush birds for Cedes, Richard elected to grab Cedes and move on. As we were riding along, about to catch the front, Cedes again snapped to a pristine point at 43 at the River Bottom Fields. Richard attempted to flush, and with no success relocated Cedes. She went on point again a few yards away in the middle of a motley scrub Island, and surely birds would be found there. But no birds were located, and Cedes was picked up. Up ahead Henry was on point at 52 along the right side almost to the bridge. Henry handled the flush like a pro and was released to finish up his few minutes. Running out of real estate before the bridge, we took a hard left before the bridge and finished out time with no additional bird work. BRACE 23 23A HURRICANE JAZZ “JAZZ” H: BRUCE HEITER23B PINEY RUN SMANTHA OF HYBRITTIN “SAMMIE” H: BEN LORENSONDogs broke away at 10:10 on Course 2 and ran like the wind! Birds were tough to come by today; scenting conditions were lousy. Through Island Field Sammie took a nice left edge on the island, Jazz took a nice edge on the right-hand side of the road down the tree line. Both dogs looking like they had earned the right to be there. Ben called point at 45, with Sammie ahead in Parrish Field on the right-hand side, on the tree line. Ben got off his horse and elected to take Sammie on. Shortly after Sammie was released, Bruce called point on Jazz at 50, near where Rocky’s only find was the day before. As we rode up, birds went up, and Bruce fired. Jazz was perfectly steady and we moved on to finish the course. BRACE 24 24A GATTON’S CLASSIC STAR HEDY “HEDY” H: BOB BURCHETT24B SARADAC’S DIAMOND FACET “JOJO” H: LISA POLLOCKWith still no sign of the sun, dogs went on the hunt at 11:28 on Course 3. We made it through the Gauntlet unscathed, at 7 Lisa’s scout called point on Jojo on the other side of a swamp. Winding our way around the swamp, we got to Jojo, Lisa started to flush and birds went up easily, and more birds went up, and more birds went up, it was an extra large covey. Jojo had good manners, and off we went. Hedy was running hard, but got a little hung up at times. Near Mario’s Hill, Lisa elected to pick up Jojo as she may have mishandled a stop to flush, it was uncertain. Hedy went on point just after the Pavillion at 31, but our day was ended as the bird popped and she took some steps. 1. 2xNFC NGDC NAGDCGFC3 GAFC2 RFC RAFC3 DC AFC Tequila Chica Bonita “Chica” owners: Amanda & Richard Beaver handler: Richard Beaver Breeder: Ed Tillson2. The Dog Wagon at any event is a center of activity. At a National Event it is the center of the social snacking universe, (and of course transports the daily braces). At our Walking National, the Dog Wagon takes on a unique atmosphere. Not only is it transporting the dogs needed to run, but it carries handlers coming up, handlers done(happy or mulling over the performance), every relative of the dog running, and every old timer that shows up. This creates a rocking and rolling event of oohs and aahs, supreme snacking and lively conversations. For the entire three hours……… LOVE IT!For the horseback events in Booneville AR, the dog wagon can vary from 1 person riding to 30 on any given day. Since we’re all a little older now, the brandy wagon name doesn’t quite fit anymore. BUT, the snacks and beverages are still done above and beyond. That morning and afternoon breaktime is THE center of a social tradition that travels way back in time and across generations. Everyone knows you run 2 hours and then it’s to the wagon for Donuts. Potty time, talking time, snacking time, discussion time, getting ready time, it’s all done in that 15-20 minutes. People suddenly appear that you didn’t know had arrived, practical jokes are high on the list, announcements are made, and hopes are stored away till day’s end. The competition is not limited to the field. Many are seen throwing elbows to get first choice of donut favorites. From fillings to sprinkles to tootsie pop flavors, to the correct shape of a donut, there is something for everyone. In most recent years Linda Thomas has been a dedicated hospitality provider. She has kept records that actually portray the changes in the sport. Who knew you could gauge change by dozens of donuts?2021 – TOTAL ENTRY 197• 64 dozen donuts- reflects higher entries?2025 – TOTAL ENTRY 146• 35 dozen donuts, 600 cups of coffee, 12 dozen hardboiled eggs, 15# apples/oranges, 27 dozen homemade cookies (donated by Darlene Dow, Jennifer Phillips, Patti Johnston), 10# candy/tootsie pops, 8 dz snack cakes, 16 cases water/pop.Averages 38 people at each morning / afternoon break. Volunteers pick up the donuts every morning on the way to the grounds. The wagon is now pulled by a Hummer, driven by Ed Kostka all day, every day. It used to be pulled by a tractor and could follow most places on the courses. Now it has made a few route modifications but still provides a decent view of the braces and bird work.An AED provided by IBC, MBC, HBC, NVA & BDR. First Aid kit by Dr Pepin. Dedicated volunteers clean out dog boxes at beginning and end and maintain the Hummer. Remember to thank them and everyone else that run these events. From Olympic Dreams to Field Glory By Mary TysonThe conclusion of the Winter Olympics got me reflecting on my own high-stakes competition: attending the American Brittany Club (ABC) National Gun Dog Championship. As a first-time participant with my little female Brittany, DC AFC Rebelflame Brazin’ Danica MH (\"Dani\"), it felt like stepping into the canine equivalent of the Games.SIGNIFICANCEThe ABC National Gun Dog Championship is the pinnacle for Brittanys, much like the Olympics for athletes. Both demand excellence under pressure, years of preparation, strong support from coaches and handlers, and adherence to traditions. Champions become legends of mastery, discipline, and peak performance under pressure.Field trials highlight the unique partnership between dog and handler. Unlike stadium spectacles, these unfold in quiet fields, guided by a handler's whistle and focused teamwork.A NEWBIE'S UNBELIEVABLE JOURNEYAs a newcomer to horseback trials and the nationals, every moment was thrilling—and unbelievable. I'd heard the event was near Booneville, Arkansas, but never imagined attending, especially without a horse. Yet with a great dog and mentors, I was there, watching Dani run in brace # 1 of 24 braces in the National Open Gun Dog Championship with pro handler Scott Johnson. Unbelievable? Absolutely! It was a memorable adventure—and if a newbie like me can dive in, so can you.FIRST IMPRESSIONS: PRIDE AND HONORStaying 20-minutes away, in Booneville, I turned into the field trial driveway and the first thing I saw was the \"Welcome American Brittany Club National Championship\" banner—I got chills down my spine. Next, front and center was the haybale podium for winner photos with placements, handlers, and owners. As I drove around the clubhouse, it was quite the sight to see: rows upon rows of vehicles and trailers which served as homes for people, horses, and Brittanys. I heard Dani's bark withing a few moments, so I found her for a quick hello and a few special treats.Inside the clubhouse, trophies gleamed beside prizes, historical photos, and tributes. A communications area posted meal schedules, running orders, and \"posted\" top contenders, building buzz over the multi-day event. Tables overflowed with raffle items including a flat-screen TV (shipping included). There were lot of good items GET BUSY, ENDURE: THE RHYTHM OF THE TRIALSMultiple national championships are held sequentially each year with schedules shaped by entries and weather. Dogs compete in hour-long braces morning and afternoon, with breaks for lunch and horse switches. I arrived early to possibly catch part of the All-Age Championship and explore the grounds. On Tuesday, the final day of the All-Age event, I bundled up in Wisconsin layers, boots, and scarves to watch some braces. I was impressed with all the folks from Southern states heated vests and gloves. The grounds buzzed: Dogs are loaded onto the wagon, horses brushed and saddled, and the dog truck is stocked with coffee, food, and supplies. Linda From Olympic Dreams to Field Glory The American Brittany ▬ 20 ▬ April 2026
Thomas ensured the food was ready, and Teresa Richmond hooked me up with a thick, comfortable horse pad to sit on.We bundled tight as we zoomed down the highway a quarter-mile, anticipation building as we passed Lick Creek Cemetery, a neighbor's yard, and crested the hill to the starting line. Our group, Patty, Moe, Denny, Darlene, Linda, and occasionally others laughed, joked, and swapped lots of stories while watching the dogs' work. The driver knew the best vantage points, and it was mesmerizing to see the dogs navigate the terrain, responding to their handlers' cues. Watching these national level dogs is different than hearing about it. The fast, forward grounds coverage, and stylish intense points are amazing.AMAZING AND HEARTBREAK: THE THRILL OF COMPETITIONThe competition unfolded over three consecutive onehour courses, spanning miles of ground with bridges over streams. It's formal: A field marshal announced each pair, then dogs bolted, followed by handlers, scouts, judges, and gallery of observers. National-level runs were super impressive: fast coverage, intense points, and stylish handling.About two hours, is a beloved tradition. What time is it? It’s \"donut time\"—Linda's spread of eggs, cookies, coffee, fruit, donuts, and Patty Johnson's mini pecan pies. Beautiful runs abounded, but heartbreaks hit too: broken points, failed stops, or errors, showing the fine line between success and disappointment.Wednesday, the first day of the Open Gun Dog Championship, Scott and Harlene lent me a horse to ride in the gallery for Dani's brace. From horseback, I recorded the field marshal formally announcing, “the start of the 2025 American Brittany Club Open Gun Dog Championship,\" the judges, and \"Brace 1: top dog, Rebelflame Brazin’ Danica, handled by Scott Johnson.\" I will forever cherish those 29 seconds of video! It still fills me with unbelievable pride for what my little Brittany has achieved. Dani had a divided find, a non-productive point, handled a covey well, and finished the hour. In unfamiliar terrain for her first nationals, she has more to learn—but she'll be back.CAMARADERIE AND FUN: THE SOCIAL SIDEThe 2025 Open Gun Dog Championship opened with a clubhouse dinner: prayer, meal, and rules review. The Calcutta auction sparked friendly bidding and banter on potential winners. I bid on Dani and a few experienced dogs, hoping for a payout. The next night celebrated last year's winners, Richard and Amanda Beaver, whose My Lil Classic triumphed, in a pink party room with gifts, drinks, and chatter. It's a close community; Richard handles, but they're Amanda's \"girls.\"Banquets continued, including the Purina-sponsored Magnum Masked Man Award Dinner and Garminsponsored Garmin Award Dinner, with trophies, paintings, cash prizes, and many congratulations. JOIN THE ADVENTURE: WHY YOU SHOULD COMEI've always loved Brittanys and outdoor training, earning them Master Hunter titles. In 2021, local walking field trials suited Dani's talents; she became a Show Champion, Field Champion, and Master Hunter. To reach nationals, I sent her to pro trainer Scott Johnson—she bonded quickly and qualified despite being away from home.If you love dogs, birds, and camaraderie, join in. Nationals represent the breed's highest working standard, but they're accessible. Most dogs belong to everyday owners who started with a well-bred puppy. Success comes from thoughtful training, mentorship, consistency, and belief in your dog. Start with a local trial, seek ABC resources, or find a trainer—it's rewarding, welcoming, and could lead to your own unforgettable adventure. The American Brittany ▬ 21 ▬ April 2026
One of the traditions that makes the American Brittany Club National Championships special is the fellowship that happens off the field. While the competition showcases the very best Brittanys in the country, the evenings during the National often bring competitors, owners, handlers, and spectators together to celebrate the sport and the people behind it.At the 2025 American Brittany Club National Championships in Booneville, Arkansas, that spirit was on full display as the 2024 National winners hosted dinners throughout the week. These gatherings have become a welcomed part of the National experience, offering an opportunity for participants to relax after a day in the saddle and share stories from the field.Past champions’ 2024 National Gun Dog Champion, NGDC GFC5 GAFC2 RFC6 RAFC5 FC AFC My Lil Classic Mercedes, and the 2024 National Amateur Gun Dog Champion, NAGDC GFC RFC2 RAFC FC AFC Ru-Jem’s Grand Touch Bourbon were honored as their owners welcomed people to the clubhouse for food, conversation, and camaraderie. The dinners served as both a celebration of the previous year’s accomplishments and a gesture of appreciation to the many volunteers, judges, handlers, and supporters who help make the Nationals possible. Many past winners view the opportunity to host as a way to thank the sport that has given them so much and to contribute to the welcoming atmosphere that keeps people returning year after year. We continue to celebrate the dedication required to compete at the highest level and the friendships that make the Brittany world feel like home.Gun Dog DinnersThe American Brittany ▬ 22 ▬ April 2026
For those people that have not experienced the Welcome Nights at each National, you are missing the best night of each event!Owners, handlers, scouts, judges, spectators and Brittany lovers arriving with hearty greetings from all across the country. Stories are being traded from the past year and many before. Grace is said and dinner is served with constant excited conversation as many only see each other this one time a year. Judges are introduced and guidelines laid out. Culminating the evening, we are now ready to start the “Calcutta”. This is one of the largest fund raisers for our events. The Calcutta is a longstanding ritual. More than a fundraiser, it full of tradition and celebration. Sires and dams are studied on a special run order for the serious bidders. Then there are those that bid on their own dog or because they like the name (LOL). Each dog is called out and the bidding takes off! If you’re lucky, you buy the winner or placer! The last few years we had the privilege of Chris Bourjon, an actual cattle auctioneer, to head the festivities. Chris enjoys the crowd and always looks for ways to “get the last drop” from the crowd. Chris was ill for the last event in 2025, so we had the totally capable “head honcho” Scott Johnson, as the stand in. Scott always takesany job he does seriously and started his research of the AGD immediately. He and Darlene found the following stats for an impressive 18 dog field in the AGD. • 14 dogs have at least one one-hour placement• 8 dogs have a National placement• 5 dogs have WON a National ChampionshipThese stats gave Scott the fuel to really get the bidding going. Great job and response! He’s hired! The Welcome night is a night that should not be missed for our National Field events. Be sure to attend in 2026! See you there! The American Brittany ▬ 23 ▬ March 2026

Are you training your dog, or are you training an athlete? The difference in perspective can revolutionize your approach to canine fitness. Have you ever watched videos of dogs running and playing in slow motion? All dogs are amazing athletes! Imagine your dog as a professional athlete. What kind of athlete would they be? A cross-country runner? MMA fighter? Pole vaulter? Thinking and training like an athlete is a powerful framework that can transform how we approach everything when it comes to training both sport and working dogs.UNDERSTANDING THE ATHLETE IN YOUR DOGJust as a human athlete needs a comprehensive training program, your dog benefits from a holistic approach to training. This involves integrating not just physical exercises but also considering nutritional, mental, and recovery aspects crucial for a top-performing athlete. If you were to train your dog like a professional athlete, what gaps might exist in your current training program that might be holding them back? Below are some key areas that you might want to consider.TRAINING LIKE A PRO: BEYOND BASIC EXERCISEIn the world of a professional athlete, whether human or canine, the approach to training can mean the difference between mediocrity and excellence. It can also be the difference between injury and early retirement or a long, productive career. Here are some tips and strategies used by professional athletes that can also be applied to our dogs.Multi-Pronged Training Approach: To develop a top-tier athlete, diversity in training is crucial. Like a gymnast who must balance strength with flexibility, or a marathon runner who combines long runs with speed work, your dog’s training should be multi-faceted. Incorporate a blend of strength training to build muscle, agility exercises to improve coordination, and a variety of cardiovascular exercises to improve both stamina and endurance. This holistic approach ensures that your dog develops a balanced program, preventing overdevelopment in one area at the expense of another. Lifestyle Focus: Training like an athlete extends beyond the training field. For dogs, as for human athletes, nutrition and rest are foundational elements that drive performance. Ensure your dog has a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support muscle recovery and energy levels. Hydration is equally crucial, as it affects every cellular function. Rest is not merely downtime. It's an essential Train Like a ProErica C. Boling, PhDNortheast Canine Conditioning, LLCTHINK LIKE AN ATHLETE, CANINE FITNESS: The American Brittany ▬ 32 ▬ April 2026
component of muscle repair and growth. Establishing and maintaining a routine that includes consistent sleep patterns and regular, peaceful rest periods will support your dog’s overall health and vitality, enabling them to perform at their best.Goal-Oriented Training: Every training session should have a clear purpose. Begin by defining what you want to achieve—whether it’s improving endurance, increasing strength, or enhancing agility. Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for each session can help you track progress and make informed adjustments to the training. This approach ensures that every activity is targeted and effective, contributing directly to your dog’s development as an athlete.Injury Prevention and Recovery: The physical demands on our sport and working dogs are high, and the risk of injury is real. Integrating preventive measures into your training plan is essential. Connect with veterinarians, canine sports therapists, and canine fitness trainers to understand the most common injuries found in your sport or canine job and begin implementing strategies to prevent them. This includes warm-up routines before intense activity, cool-down sessions to aid recovery, and incorporating rest days into your training schedule. Proactive injury prevention not only extends your dog's athletic career but also enhances their quality of life.Regular Assessments: Continuous evaluation is key to a successful training program. Monitor your dog’s performance and condition regularly, noting any signs of progress or regression. Use tools like video analysis to study their form and technique during various activities. Regular health check-ups can help catch any emerging issues before they become serious. Adjustments based on these assessments ensure that your training remains appropriate as your dog grows and develops, maximizing their potential and preventing injuries. THINK AND TRAIN LIKE A COACH: ANALYZE AND ADAPTEmbrace the mindset that every dog, irrespective of their competition level or job, is an athlete deserving of thoughtful, professional-level training. When your dog faces challenges or seems off their game, resist the urge to write it off as just a bad day. Instead, delve into the underlying causes—why is your dog not performing well today? Could there be an injury or a need for a different approach? This analytical perspective (and not blaming the dog!) is key to evolving your training strategy. Training like an athlete isn't about sticking to one rigid program. It's about being adaptable and responsive. As your dog develops, their training needs will change, necessitating regular evaluations and modifications to avoid plateaus and prevent injuries. This cyclical process of assessing, adapting, and revising your training program is crucial for maintaining and advancing performance.WANT TO LEARN MORE?Did you miss our free, online workshop, The Canine Athlete’s Formula for Success: Mastering Strength, Speed & Stamina? ABC BOOTH2026 National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic FEB 20-22, 2026 | MINNEAPOLIS, MNThe 2026 National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic put on by Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever was held February 20-22, 2026, in Minneapolis, MN. Over 28,000 people came to the event which promotes habitat, conservation, upland bird hunting, and, of course, bird dogs. It is the largest gathering of upland bird hunters in the world. The event introduced new gear and technology to hunters, as well as brought awareness to conservation efforts that support habitat. However, the stars of the weekend were the bird dogs, especially the American Brittanys. The American Brittany was once again promoted as a premiere upland bird dog for all three days of the event by ABC volunteers. Thank you to ABC members Mary Tyson, Shelly Wenberg, David Hamilton and Doug Ziegler for displaying Brittanys in the booth all three days and talking “bird dogs” to the many visitors. The 3-day event kicked off with a Bird Dog Parade which featured breeds from Brittanys to Vizsla’s. All breeds were greeted with a shout of “ROOSTER” when they crossed the stage. Information was provided to booth visitors on breed standard, breeder selection, and how to choose a puppy. The two local regional ABC clubs, St Croix Valley Brittany Club and Minnesota Brittany Club, also provided information on local resources for current Brittany owners. Conversations were mostly about bird hunting over a Brittany, and how great they are doing that job; however, it also included how fantastic companion dogs they make for any family. We provided information to the ABC website and direction on how to locate a regional club in their area. This is the 9th year that the American Brittany Club has sponsored a booth. If you are interested in participating at next year’s Pheasant Fest in Omaha, NE, March 5-7, 2027, please reach out to Doug Ziegler at [email protected] by: Doug Ziegler, Minnesota Brittany ClubThe American Brittany ▬ 34 ▬ April 2026
The Bill Oliver Memorial Kansas Championship was held at the William Oliver Ranch near Eureka, Kansas. The Oliver Ranch never disappoints in its beauty. The Club would like to thank the following for their support of the trial; Mrs. Oliver for the use of the grounds, and our sponsor Purina, our judges Lisa Pollock and Scott Thielen. This season the rains that have been received over the summer proved to be beneficial to the cattleman; however, the Brittanys, handlers and scouts were dealing with tall prairie grass and other vegetation cover. This demonstrated to be a difficult situation for judges, handlers and scouts to be able to keep a watchful eye on the dogs. It was exciting to see a dog out front after not knowing where the dog was at times. Even better was when a dog was found on point demonstrating their capabilities of adapting to the terrain. THE RUNNING: BRACE ONE: 8:00 A.M.PC MIKE DROP, HANDLER, STEVE CHANG BAMAJAMA WILLY’S SASSIE SADIE, HANDLER, BOB BURCHETTPC Mike Drop was traveling through the area, well, established point which resulted in a non-event, no birds were produced. At the 35-minute mark handler, Steve Chang requested the tracker. Sadie was on her game. She had two successful bird finds showcasing her stellar work. Later in the brace she had not been seen for a while and handler asked for the tracker. BRACE TWO: 9:08 A.M.ASTRA LUCKY PEPPER SEVEN, HANDLER, SCOTT JOHNSONNOBEL SOUTH PAW, HANDLER, STEVE CHANGAstra Lucky Pepper Seven (Ghost) was taking the terrain well and established point at 20 minutes into the brace, this resulted in a relocation and no bird activity. At 33 minutes into the run there was a breach of manners that unfortunately ended the run for Ghost. The territory proved to be a little difficult for Noble South Paw. The handler asked for the tracker near the high post gate. BRACE THREE: 10:13 A.M.WIND MOUNTAIN TEQUILA SENORITA ESPECIAL, HANDLER, STEVE CHANGSNIKSOH DIAMOND JACK, HANDLER, SCOTT JOHNSONThis brace proved to be a little more exciting with bird work, with both dogs continually being to the front however the all-age range we all love to see wasn’t well presented. Wind Mountain Tequila Senorita Especial had a nice run with her first established find resulting in several quail popping up on the flush. She shared two divided finds and another independent find, all while holding her manners well. Sniksoh Diamond Jack, handler Scott Johnson also had a nice run during the brace. There were the shared divided finds with Rita, a stop to flush and bird find at 54-minute mark, all while containing his manners well. BRACE FOUR: 1:30 P.M.BIG MACK XIV, HANDLER, STEVE CHANGSIGBRITS GRACIES LIL SECRET, HANDLER, SCOTT JOHNSONNeither dog saw any bird work in this brace. At the 20-minute mark Bee is on point. Handler flushes several birds; all manners are in check. Bee finished the hour. Starlight's Iris In Mercury Rising (Iris), wasn’t making the money in this brace and handler Burchett made the decision to end her run and picked up early. BRACE SEVEN: 7:53 A.M.RED GRANITES HENRY WILL BE A STAR, HANDLER, BOB BURCHETTWINGRA’S INDY GO, HANDLER, ED TILLSONAt the 20-minute mark, Henry established point and proved his manners in good faith. He had his first find at or near the 10-minute mark, handler relocated the dog and no birds were produced. The next established point was at the 27-minute mark with a covey find, manners contained. Next point was a few minutes later with a single bird taking flight, again manners are held well.
