Notes from the President Joe Droel I’m honored to have been elected by my peers to help preserve the history of the greatest bird dog. We had successful ABC National events in 2023 thanks to many talented volunteers, and we look forward to all sorts of exciting events in 2024. With so many wonderful people in our Brittany community, I urge you to volunteer where and when you are able. We all tend to have busy lifestyles, but ‘many hands make light work’. That being said we have some committee openings to fill, please see our committee page on the ABC website to see if any of these positions fit your talents, and contact me or the committee chair to express your willingness to help. If you have other special talents, but don’t know how they can be put to good use, please contact me and I will get you connected. The Board of Directors is working hard to make many updates within our organization. Being well into the digital age, many of our applications need a facelift. I would like to encourage you to support our new ABC Magazine Committee, Editor, and Publisher. We have already noticed some great changes, but it will take time and support to fully implement improvements. The ABC Board of Directors is looking at a new website/ webmaster, as our devoted webmaster of many years is stepping down. Some of the updates we are looking forward to in a new website is more online payment opportunities for clubs and members, Membership Database (so we may communicate with our membership via email), and more. I wish you a prosperous and blessed new year, and some new adventures with your Brittany. Joe Droel The American Brittany ▬ 5 ▬ February 2024
President Robert Rankin called the meeting to order at 8:09am on November 19, 2023. Executive Secretary J. Brooke Burlingame called roll, Directors present in the room were, Robin Tomasi, Joe Droel, Darlene Dow, Burton Wice, Bret Lindbeck, Ed Tillson and Leslee Masolotte. The Directors present on Zoom were Karen Hanson, Linda McCartney, Ron Gulembo, Jim Stevens, Vincent Anderson, Bruce Heiter, Jim Hammett and Helen Riggle. All Directors were present, and a quorum was achieved. Motion 1: Motion by Jim Hammet, seconded by Darlene Dow to approve the 2022 Board of Directors minutes from 2022. All 15 yes, Motion Passed. President Rankin started by speaking about all the people retiring from their positions as officers as well as committee heads including insurance, webmaster, treasurer and legal advisor. The BOD then started to move through the list of agenda items and reports. If there were no questions or discussions, we moved on to the next report after questions were recognized. The reports were not all given in order, as some people showed up in person and wanted to give reports and get on the road to home or other areas. Motion 2: Motion by Helen Riggle, seconded by Linda McCartney to approve the reinstatement of the Golden Empire Brittany Club and the Sunland Brittany Club. All 15 yes, Motion passed. Jacqui Campbell spoke about membership and that the BOD could read her report in the agenda book. That right now membership is holding at a steady line. She explained how the %’s could be off due to members that hold a membership in more than one regional club. Motion 3: Motion by Bret Lindback, seconded by Ed Tillson I move to raise entries fees for national events from 200 to 225. 11 Yes (Hanson, Dow, McCartney, Droel, Heiter, Wice, Tillson, Masolotte, Lindback, Tomasi, Hammett) 4 No (Gulembo, Stevens, Anderson, Riggle) Motion passed 11 YES/4 NO 4th VP Mike Poehler also spoke about needing more help with the Walking Gundog nationals, the drive was very long, and cost quite a bit. President Rankin made the suggestion of appointing someone closer to the area where the event is being run to help with the coordination of the event. Sandy Malloy spoke next about the magazine and that she is trying to get all the information updated and back on track. She is worried that deadlines are being ignored and this causes a lot of problems. She spoke about the problem with reformatting and typing up all the field, specialty show results to get into the magazine. Another thing is that the results can be missing information. (this was heard about from other various committees including Mary Karbiner and other field trail secretary) Sandy also spoke about changing to a new printer to help save on the cost of the printing. The BOD wanted more specific information and requested that a proposal be put together for the zoom meeting on December 15, 2023. Third 3rd VP Joy Crisler came on by zoom so say that the National Specialty show went well and to let the board know the new mats and gates worked well. Also, to let them know that the storage unit had been cleaned out and redone and making them one again, and the process for that to happen. The process for that to happen. The other talk was a reminder that all show entries must be made through the superintendent only. Also, that all materials pertaining to the show entries and catalog must be handled with AKC rules in mind. Also, the NSS would like to have their own bank account to handle all the monies and receipts while having good tracking of the account. It would be handled by a volunteer CPA willing to be the NSS treasurer. The BOD was also informed of some changes that are being made with the National Specialty Show BOS trophy. Terry Hillard was next with the Delegates report. She spoke about needing better access to the membership when questions for voting arise. That there is a lot of information that needs to go to not only the DOB but the whole membership as the information being presented can affect lots of people in different venues. Right now, the ABC website does not have the needed capabilities for this role. There are talks in progress to help find a solution for the ABC delegate to reach out to the membership. Deb Rubert came in to talk about the problems she is having with people renewing their memberships. PayPal has changed their policies and does not include the information needed to keep her lists up to date. Next up was Nancy Clendenen with the Dual Dog Award information. There are some changes that she wants to make to update the point system. This would allow the show points to be more consistent with the field points. Allowing for the select dog/bitch to get points toward the dual dog award. This will be discussed again in December. Next, President Rankin spoke about the retiring of the current webmaster. Mark Claypool then presented a proposal for updating and implementing a new website. There was a lot of discussion and more questions needed to be answered. The BOD will be in contact with Mark for the next few weeks figuring out the information needed for an update. This will be discussed again in December. Next was executive Secretary J. Brooke Burlingame, the information for Parent Club Approvals was discussed, as well as the updating of all the ABC trophies for the insurance company. The next thing discussed was the way that the voting for the Directors of the ABC is handled. After the discussion of the website is completed if voting can be handled through the website that will be an option. Otherwise, the Ex. Sec. will contact other voting agencies to find the best protocol. Paper votes will be available to those that request them, but after all the mailing issues a different way should be found. This is another thing that will be discussed at the zoom meeting in December. Next up was Mr. Chuck Lawerence, the new head of the finance committee. Mary Karbiner came forward and kept the BOD abreast of stats and problems she is facing with incomplete information. Bad handwriting is also a constant problem for her while trying to read results. For the 2023 National All-Age Championship in Booneville, Arkansas, 46 dogs were entered. Our prestigious judges this year were Terry Chandler from Las Cruces, New Mexico and Justin Crook out of Jasper, Missouri. These two judges have been in pointing breeds for many years. Between the two of them, their expertise brought over 70 years of extensive knowledge in trialing and judging a variety of pointing breeds. Many thanks to Terry and Justin for their time in the saddle and contributions to the event’s success. Thank you to our sponsors Purina and Garmin. Brace 17 a) My Lil Classic Mercedes (Cedes) – Richard Beaver b) Big Mac (Mac) – Steve Chang After breaking away at the bridge Cedes made a classy cast around the field to be rewarded with a find. Cedes had an unproductive at 11, but at 38 scored a find as we left the Fish Hook. Big Mac was gone for a bit, then had a find at 42 with Cedes honoring. Cedes made a nice move around Parish field while Big Mac took to the front to cross over old 109. Going around the horse shoe, Mac looked a little tired as he finished the hour. Cedes was forward on the treeline going away for the finish. MONDAY – 34 DEGREES FOR A BREAKAWAY Brace 19 a) CVK’s Spartan King (Leo) – Jack Alexander b) HVK Turns Back Time (Mick) – Ed Tillson Mick was close running today and not getting much done; Ed chose to pick up at 30. At 18 and 35 Leo had unproductives that ended his running. Brace 20 a) Piney Run Zack (Zack) – Kent Patterson b) SS Rig’s Colorado Gun Runner (Riggs) – Tom Milam At 2 towards the left of the big mott Riggs had a big covey find. Zack took to the front. Point was called for Riggs at 18 before we would turn to the bridge. After a relocation we moved on; no bird was produced. As we crossed the bridge Riggs went right and Zack made a hard left. Zack showed up before making the hairpin turn. Point was called for Zack, however; no bird was produced. Zack had bird work in the Fish Hook at 56 then finished his run. Riggs was missing then showed up at the start of the Fish Hook where he completed the hour. Brace 21 a) AMJ’s N Willy’s Missouri Hellion (Elly)– Mike Poehler b) WWW’s Miss Corona (Rona) – Burton Wice Both dogs took the front nicely. Point was called for Elly at 10. As the birds lifted Elly went with gusto! At 19 Corona had a find and then released to the front where she stayed. She had a feather find by the skeet house. She took to the front again and as she was MIA when time was called, a tracker was given to Burton. Brace 22 a) Diamond Hill Dangerous Big Bang (Leonard) – Scott Johnson b) Urban American Legend (Urbie) – Steve Chang Urbie had an unproductive at 10 with Leonard honoring, then his second unproductive before Lick Creek and Leonard once again honored. As Leonard crossed the road at the Big Oak he went forward on the left. As he popped out to the front, he hit point hard on an evergreen for a huge covey find. Leonard started to look a bit tired and Scott chose to pick up at 42. Brace 23 a) Sniksoh Double Down (Spot) – Scott Johnson b) M&M’s Grouse Gunning Grace (Gracie) – Kyle Merrill At 2 point was called for Gracie in the corner after the double red gates; no birds seemed to be there that day. Spot had a nice find through the cut on the left tree line, while Gracie made a nice cast to the right before the bridge. At 18 there was a divided find; then at 20 Spot had his own piece of bird work. Gracie had another unproductive at 23 which finished her run. With Spot running a bit close, Scott chose to pick up and call it a day. AMERICAN BRITTANY CLUB 2023 OAA The American Brittany ▬ 12 ▬ February 2024

The 2023 running of the American Brittany Club National Amateur All Age Championship had an entry of 27 dogs with 27 coming to the line on Tuesday, November 21 at the Blue Mountain Wildlife Demonstration Area near Booneville, Arkansas. The one day delay was caused by a heavy morning thunderstorm on Monday November 20. The grounds were a little shaggy, but the number of coveys found on every single course was amazing and we thank the Arkansas groundskeepers and especially the bird keeper/planter for doing such a great job. This was Richard Beaver’s first year as 1st Vice-President, and he managed the multiple tasks of the Field Trial Chairman faultlessly. Richard’s wife Amanda had taken two weeks from her business to lend a hand when needed and to help keep Richard grounded (his words) from the onslaught of responsibilities that come with the job of running a National event. Darlene Dow served as National Field Trial Secretary for the All Age stakes and covered all her duties in an organized and efficient manner. Members of the Field Trial Committee consisting of Ed Kostka, Bob Burchett, Burton Wice, Mike Poehler, John Perry, Lisa Pollock, and Ed Tillson assisted Richard with the scheduling and coordination of all the amateur all age national activities. Scott Johnson again served as the Field Trail Marshall and Bret Lindback repeated as the Course Marshall. Bret with his group of volunteers kept the gallery moving in an orderly fashion. Praise to Ed Kostka and Darlene Dow for coordinating the multiple tasks associated with the management of the dog wagon. A big HOORAH for Paula and her personable crew who worked diligently to provide us with excellent food and beverages. This event depends on the support of our sponsors. For many years Purina has contributed financial support as well as Pro Plan dog food to help provide our incredible canine athletes with a platform to showcase their amazing abilities at this annual National event. Purina Pro Plan is a performance food second to none and one trusted to keep our hard working dogs exceling in all competition arenas. Purina Performance jackets were presented to the Judges and were well received. Garmin provided their quality locating device to the winning dogs. Most of the event competitors use a Garmin locating device trusting they will be able to locate should a dog go astray. Last but certainly not least, thanks to Kevin Parrish, The Saddle Guy for providing gorgeous, functional saddles for the winners of all our National Events. Events held at the National Amateur Championship began with the National Amateur Championship Calcutta on Sunday November 19. Tuesday night, November 21 Kent Patterson hosted a party celebrating the 2022 National Amateur Champion, NAFC2/GFC/RFC2/FC/AFC Piney Run Hilltop Blew. The clubhouse tables were decorated with centerpieces which featured cottonwood bases adorned with colorful sandhill foliage. Five flags adorned five of these centerpieces representing the states of South Dakota, South Carolina, Nebraska, South Carolina and Arkansas all places Blew had won Championships. For the celebration Paula and her crew offered Chicken Alfredo and smothered pork chops with all the perfect 2023 AMERICAN BRITTANY CLUB NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Nov 20 - 23, 2023 Blue Mountain - J. side dishes and a delicious Jello poke cake for dessert. After we had chowed down Kent walked around asking field trial related trivia questions at each table. Example: What was the name and burial place for the most famous Tennessee Walking Horse? Answer: Midnight Sun buried at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin, TN. It was a well-planned and well-received activity and required our food laden brains to reoxygenate so we would all have a chance to take home one of the incredible centerpieces. Thursday was Thanksgiving Day and after running the final five braces and making placement announcements, a mouth-watering Thanksgiving Dinner feast was served up by Paula and crew. This year’s judges were William Smith and Chris Weatherly who have both judged in Booneville for the American Brittany Club Nationals many times before. I have had the privilege of reporting with them both before and they are both very responsive to my requests for information I might have missed. Will is also a master of the pun. My favorites this year were: What language do fish speak? Finnish and Where do ghosts like to swim? Lake Erie. As judges both were attentive and looking for dogs with intelligent and diligent course application exhibited with athleticism and stamina, responsiveness to their handler and impeccable style and manners on birds. The Recognized:Champion: Top Dog Brace 1 NAFC DC/GFC2/RFC3 Bamajama Willy’s Sassy “Sadie”, Handler: Wayne Pepin. Owners: Wayne & Barbara Pepin. Sadie, 7 year-old white and orange female out of NGDC/DC/GFC/AFC Hope’s Chief of Crosscreek & GCH DC GFC Wild Mtn’s Midnight Rendezvous JH. 2023 has been an exciting year for Sadie. Not only was she crowned 2023 National Amateur All Age Champion she was also named the 2023 Purina All Age Dog of the Year. She also became a Dual Champion in her spare time. Her performance in the 2023 NAFC was exceptional. As soon as she was released Sadie exhibited a frontal application of the course which was rewarded with her first find at 19. As we rode to the sound of point we observed Sadie standing stylishly into a tree line on the left side of the road. The handler put a covey to flight with Sadie staying staunch and mannerly through the flush and fire. Sadie’s next 2 finds came at 27 and 35 and were shared with Kimber her running mate. Birds were put to flight in both instances with Sadie exhibiting intense style and manners. When released Sadie showed speed and range always hunting to the front. Point was called at 47 deep in the trees surrounding the Cotton Fields. We rode up and observed Sadie frontal to the tree line, tail and head high never letting down through the flush and fire. Sadie was released and finished her hour to the front maintaining the same speed and pattern she started with. RU Champion: Bottom Dog Brace 6 NAFC2/GFC/RFC2/FC/AFC Piney Run Hilltop “Blew”, Handler/Owner: Kent Patterson. Blew, 6 year-old white and orange male out of Piney Run Chalk & Piney Run Chicklet Blew also had a tremendous 2023 season and for his efforts was named the 2023 Purina Amateur All Age Dog of the Year. Two time NAFC Blew broke away over Course 3 his mission find some birds and boy did he hit the jackpot. Blew had covey finds at 12, 24, and a nonproductive at 49. Blew finished his RU Championship performance with a solid hunting ground effort and another stylish covey find at 55. 3rd: Top Dog Brace 3: RFC/FC Mr. Staley, “Doc”, Handler/Owner Dan Campbell. Doc, 3 year old white and orange male out of NFC/FC Bean’s Blaze and Janee’s Rush ‘N Past The Limit Doc was off like a flash on Course 3. After we rounded a bend in the road Doc was observed standing tall into a small roadside thicket at 15. A large covey was put to flight with Doc remaining stylish and mannerly. Doc went on to log a single at 28 and another The American Brittany ▬ 15 ▬ February 2024
covey at 34 both had birds hunkered down in roadside hidey-holes. With 23 minutes remaining Doc made a big forward cast across the road into the heavily wooded tree line only to reappear playing catch up through the gallery five minutes later. After that Dan kept him forwardly focused and at 57 Doc pointed staunchly into a large grassy meadow just off the intersecting crossroad. Dan stomped through the area thoroughly, but no birds were produced just as time ran out. Doc’s dynamic bird finding and pointing style were paramount to earning him the third place award. 4th: Top Dog Brace 2: RFC2/FC Piney Run “Zack”, Handler/Owner: Kent Patterson. Zack, 3 year old white and orange male out of GFC/FC/GAFC/AFC Piney Run Jake and Piney Run Candy This was Zack’s first visit to Booneville, and he ran over this unknown terrain with a smooth athletic stride at a medium race and range hitting the cover with drive and determination. Zack handled kindly for Kent and exhibited beautiful style and manners on his birds. Zack’s efforts resulted in a stop to flush at 42 and covey finds at 46 and 50. He also logged a nonproductive at 59. Overall, this young dog showed all the right stuff for a well deserved 4th place finish. THE RUNNING: FIRST DAY, Tuesday Morning, Dec 7, 2022, Temp range 50 to 52, 60% humidity, Gusty NW winds 10-20 mph27 Starters, Brace 1: DC/GFC2/RFC3 Bamajama Willy’s Sassy “Sadie”, Wayne Pepin and GFC/FC/AFC Jwb Artic Cat “Kimber” Jack Alexander Kimber and Sadie got this year’s National Amateur All Age Championship underway at 8 both making strong fast breakaways. (Sadie’s run is in the Recognized section above). Kimber hunted hard right to left showing only occasionally through Lick Creek when she was found sharing a find with her bracemate at 27. The birds were flushed with all OK and both dogs were released, and another divided find was called at 35. Birds were worked with all in order for both dogs. Kimber finished her final 25 minutes coming in from the rear after a long absence. Brace 2 RFC2/FC Piney Run “Zack”, Kent Patterson and GFC/FC/ AFC Rusty Ridge Where U “Been”, Claude Kilpatrick Zack and Been took off at 9:10 with Zack peeling off to the right (read about Zack’s run in the Recognized section above) and Been charging forward hunting hard for birds in far away objectives. Been showed to the front and was tuned in to Claude for 50 minutes when the string broke and quick as a wink Been was a dog gone. Brace 3 RFC/FC She’s Outa Control “Jessie”, Harlan Gerardy and GFC/FC Mr. Staley, “Doc”, Dan Campbell Doc’s run can be found in the Recognized section above. Jessie’s big, impressive breakaway was cut short when she bumped a bird at 11 thus ending her time. Tuesday Afternoon Temp 52, 80% humidity with gusty NW winds 10-20 mph Brace 4 NAGDC/GFC4/FC/AFC Sniksoh Hank’s “Hatch”, Adam Freeman and NAFC/GFC/DC/GAFC2/AFC Anj’s Ohio Hellion, “Hank”, Mike Poehler Hatch and Hank were off to the races at their breakaway. Hatch had a big covey find at 28 which he handled appropriately. Hank broke away to places unknown and was not returned to judgment. Hatch finished his hour at a moderate range making some nice moves with no further bird contact. Brace 5 AFC WW’s Gin and Tonic “Ginny”, Burton Wice and FC Sam Hill’s One Wild Ryde, Sam Thompson It was a short brace for Ryde who had bird trouble at 20 and for Ginny who was not pleasing Burton who picked her up at 27. Brace 6 2XNAFC/RFC/FC/AFC Piney Run Hilltop “Blew”, Kent Patterson and NFC/GAFC/RAFC/FC/AFC SS “Rig’s” Colorado Gun Runner, Tom Milam After a break, these two Super Stars took off looking hard for birds and I must say they did not have a hard time finding them. I have never seen so many coveys found on Course 3. Blew’s run can be found in the Recognized section above. Rigs started with a nonproductive at 15, but then hit the bird jackpot with three successful covey finds at 35, 39 and 45 which were all handled in a mannerly fashion. Rigs continued but this time he charted a course 2023 NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP The American Brittany ▬ 16 ▬ February 2024
of his own liking and was lost at time and not returned to judgment. DAY 2, Wednesday Morning, November 22. T 63 degrees 60% humidity Gusty NW winds 10-24 mph Brace 7 RAFC Jagoub’s Spell Caster “Tabu”, Tom Jagielski and M & M’s Grouse Gunning “Gracie”, Jack Alexander It was chilly at 8 when these two girls broke away. At 12 Gracie was found standing tall on the left side of the road in the magic tree line that always seemed to have birds holed up in. Gracie looked good standing staunchly and staying mannerly through the flush and fire. At 32 we rode up and observed Tabu standing spectacularly on the right after the turn into the Cotton Fields. Unfortunately, what was discovered was a very fresh pile of feathers. So, Gracie was released, and both girls continued their quests. Somewhere Gracie made a wrong turn so Jack requested the tracker at 45. Tabu continued hunting hard but finished her run with no birds. Brace 8 FC/AFC WW’s Miss Wendy Peffercorn “Wendee”, Burton Wice and NFC/NAGD/FC/AFC B & T’s Sonndance Kid Rock, “Rocky”, Trasa Fowler Wendee and Rocky were released on to Course 2 at 9:18. At 15 Rocky looked like a million bucks on his first find standing tall and tight as handler put flight to several birds. When released Rocky ran a short distance then locked up again at 20. The handler was unable to locate any birds so a nonproductive was logged. At 35 a call of point was called from behind the gallery and as we rode back Rocky was observed standing in the road pointing into a small section of tall grass and weeds. The handler approached but did not dismount just began urging Rocky to leave it. It was an awkward situation but finally Rocky turned back onto the course and continued his quest. At 45 Rocky worked a small covey with all in order. At 51 Rocky was observed just off the road standing in a tree line pointing outwardly. Logically Trasa moved around in the grass to the front of the tree line for a while but located no birds. She walked back to Rocky and just as she laid hands on him a single bird flew out a mere 2 feet from them. Trasa fired and Rocky finished out his hour with no further bird drama. Wendee had been hunting hard but had no bird contact. Brace 9 Roan Survivor “Rey”, JoAnne Perry and Accidental Encounter “Oliver”, Harlan Gerardy Rey and Oliver broke away with gusto. Unfortunately, Rey suffered 2 nonproductives, one at 7 the other at 20 thus ending her time. During Rey’s second nonproductive Oliver came whizzing by failing to honor which led to his unceremonious pick up. It was a short brace but provided an early lunch and a little extra rest for all involved in the afternoon braces. Wednesday Afternoon, November 22, Temp 57, 80% Humidity with gusty NW Wind 10-24 mph Brace 10 NGDC/DC Tequila “Chica” Bonita, Richard Beaver and Sam Hill’s Bel O’ The Ball “Bella”, Sam Thompson A gusty wind sprung up as Chica and Bella were released onto Course 1. Bella went stealth from the breakaway and was not returned to judgment. Chica’s performance was uncharacteristically erratic from start to finish. At 50 she posted a nonproductive and finished her hour with no birds. Brace 11 DC/NAGDC/AFC Hurricane Banjo, Todd Parmenter and FC Diamond Hill Dangerous Big Bang “Leonard”, Lisa Pollack Both Banjo and Leonard had nice smooth runs over Course 2. All objectives were properly searched, and both dogs found birds and handled them with upright attractive manners. Banjo found birds at 40 and 54 standing smartly and mannerly through the flush and fire. Likewise, Leonard posted finds at 6 and 42 both handled with proper manners and style. Leonard’s last point at 52 was a nonproductive. Both finished their hour moving at their established easygoing pace and range. Brace 12 RFC/RAFC/FC/AFC Ru-Jem’s Grand “Touch” Bourbon, Stan Williamson and GFC/FC/AFC TJ’s Black Diamond, “Coal”, John Perry Touch went misplaced from breakaway and tracker was requested at 20. Coal was in and out of sight staying wide to the right when a call of point went up at 25. Coal was pointing staunchly into a tall stand of grass close to the road and a large covey was put to flight with all in order through the flush and fire. When released Coal rocketed away and after a short absence was found standing to the front at 40 looking like a million bucks on the backside of a large grassy meadow. The handler kicked around aggressively for some time before coming back to Coal and tapping him on the head which was meant to instigate his relocation. Coal stood rock solid and as John tapped his head again two birds took flight from a distance of no more than a foot. A surprised John fired, and Coal remained rock steady with a look of “I told you so.” After his release Coal sprinted away and disappeared. Coal was still missing at time but up to that point it had been an exciting all age race. Casper scored at 16, with good style; though he shortened up in the high cover about halfway through the brace, he still showed some nice moves. Bee showed to the front well, scoring a nice find at the tree line at 38. Casper was rewarded at 47 with a nice piece of bird work, then an unproductive at 52 before finishing in close range while Bee finished very strong and forward. Brace 2 a) Find A Bird Dixie (Dixie) – Chris Selix b) Civil War (Stewart) – Mark Aumen At 15 minutes, Dixie scored a find after the hairpin turn by the bridge; she would later have another find by the broken tree. Stewart stopped and was seeming very birdie, but with no birds the decision was made to move on; he seemed to be preoccupied with other things, going birdless while Dixie accomplished bird work at 47 and went on to finish the hour. Brace 3 a) Sovereign’s Legendary Rascal (Alvin) – Bob Burchett b) Turning Points Ring of Fire (Johnny) – Julie Nelson Alvin handled the cover well with nice style on point and a find at 37. Johnny proved to be very independent being on his own quite a bit during the brace, thinking he had this with or without his handler. Johnny had a piece of bird work at 57, as Alvin honored nicely and both dogs finished the hour. Brace 4 a) Artemis Sunshine Von Huberhaus (Artie) – Travis Patterson b) St. Clair’s Prince of Darkness (Ozzy) – Scott Johnson Artie was gone from the breakaway and the tracker was pulled. AKC Delegate Report for December 2023 Submitted by Terry Hilliard I attended the AKC Delegate meeting in Orlando in December. The Royal Canine Dog show was the biggest show in the history of the shows being held in Orlando with 5700 entries in the show and a total number of 9800 entries. While attending the Delegate meeting I also assisted Jessica Carlson with the Judges Education. We had 35 new people interested in judging our breed. I also did ringside mentoring during the day. Motions that were passed by the Delegate body during the meeting were as follows: A motion was brought forward by the Gordon Setter Club of America with AKC Board approval. The changes states: It removes the restriction that if the club fails to hold a horseback championship, it may not lose the ability to hold the walking championship. The next item that passed will require the Parent Club to individually make a decision on how to handle this new rule change. Parent Clubs have the option to offer a 3 point major for Reserve Winners, Dogs or Bitches, at any specialty show that has 2x’s the number of entries in males or bitches to constitute a 5 point major for that area. Some clubs have opted to use this change in regional specialties. We need to decide if it will be awarded at all specialties that meet the number of entries or do we just award it for the Summer Specialty. We already have this at the National Specialty Show. This has been sent to the President and BOD for decision. New developments at the AKC include a new AKC DNA+Health testing. The test includes 201 markers of the original AKC DNA profile for genetic identity and parentage verification and also includes 328 markers for health and other traits. In December the AKC launched a new website to provide a valuable incentive to for dog registration. The AKC Pet Rx, an online pharmacy that sells more than 3000 prescription meds and other over the counter pet products. The service is provided by Allivet that is fully credited by the National Boards of Pharmacy. I will have a group of 5 adults and 6 dogs to represent our breed at Meet the Breeds at the Javitz Center in NYC the last weekend of January. I will again be setting up representatives from the ABC to represent our breed at Meet the Breed as it travels around the states. Last year I was successful at having our breed represented at each one of the Meet the Breeds with the exception of Dallas and no one would volunteer to man the booth. Again, thank you for allowing me to represent the AKC as Delegate. Terry Hilliard The American Brittany ▬ 24 ▬ February 2024

It was held at the prestigious Oliver Ranch in Eureka, Kansas with 38 dogs entered and good weather in the forecast. Our judges were Dr. Robert Rankin and Alex Jacobs. Thank you for all of your hard work and time in the saddle. Thank you to our sponsor Purina. Purina fuels many of the competitors and provides financial support for the event and complimentary bags of dog food for each entry. The champion received a beautiful bronze dog atop of a wooden base along with a purse; the runner-up received a purse and plaque. All placing dogs received a ribbon, plaque and Purina dog food. Thank you to the Oliver Family for allowing us to use these beautiful grounds. Thank you to Jackie Adrian for serving as the Field Trial Secretary, Joanne Perry as the reporter. Also thank you to the members of the Field Trial Committee: Scott Johnson and Matt Harris (co-chairs), Trasa Fowler, Jackie Adrian (makes awesome pies), Rick Wheeler (also drove the dog wagon and supplied snacks) and Matt Harris as the Marshal. A big shout out to Nathan and Amy Hopper who kept us well fed. To our sponsors, the competitors, the gallery and to everyone who volunteered, we greatly appreciate all that you did to make the event successful and fun. Thank you to all! The winners The Champion from brace 7 was Allie a) Allie – Ed Tillson b) Jack – Scott Johnson These two dogs were off and running from the start disappearing to the front. After a short absence, Allie was seen forward. Jack’s run started to shorten a bit. Then at 27 both dogs were together again hunting the cover. At 50, Allie hit point hard on the hillside; Ed flushed the bird and we were on the move once more. At 59:50 Jack hit point and finished the hour, while Allie finished out front. From brace 2 came the runner-up Sadie a) Sadie – Bob Burchett b) Smoking Joe – Scott Johnson Sadie had her wheels going from start to finish! At 19, point was called for Sadie and no bird could be produced. Joe was running a bit close and at 28, his handler picked him up. Also at 28, point was called again for Sadie as she came off an eye-catching cast along cedars. This time a covey lifted and all was in order. She scored again standing tall at 51 heading uphill to the prairie. With 2 minutes left in the brace she was seen standing a ways off on a lonely cedar. With a relocation she nailed the covey to finish the hour strong with good manners! Third place from brace 1 was Morris a) Morris – Steve Chang b) Flyer – Bob Burchett Morris and Flyer went straight to the front and were MIA for a bit. A large herd of deer were of no help at all; this is why good scouts are always appreciated. At 22 Flyer came around looking a bit tired before leaving again; Bob pulled the tracker at 41 for him. Morris was seen intermittently to the front. Point was called at 48 as Morris was standing with style! Birds lifted and all was good with Morris finishing to the front. Awarded fourth place from brace 16 was Buzz a) Harry – Bob Burchett b) Buzz – Scott Johnson Both dogs took their own side of the field. Harry decided not to tune into Bob and at 13, Bob picked him up. At 23 point was called for Buzz. A nice covey lifted and all was good. Buzz had a powerful run, continuing to listen well and move forward through a deer sighting at 35. As we went uphill by camp, he made another nice cast. Buzz went MIA for a short period before showing up to point a nice buck. The buck went left Buzz went right to finish forward. The rest of the running Brace 3: a) Caper – Lisa Pollock b) Indy – Ed Tillson Both dogs had moderate range. Caper and Indy had a divided non-productive at 16. Then at 34 Caper had a second non-productive to end her run. Indy pointed an animal’s den and then a rabbit. He continued in a hunting mode and finished the hour. Brace 4: a) Bets – Steve Chang b) Louie – Scott Jonson These two dogs hunted hard and forward, but neither could produce birds. Brace 5: a) Cedes – Richard Beaver b) Elly – Mike Poehler Both dogs ran well. At 22, Elly scored a nice find, then at 29 point was called; but with too many steps, she was out of contention. Cedes had a non-productive 29 then another at 47 to end her race. Brace 6: a) Lucy – Bob Burchett b) Jessee – Harlan Gerardy At 39, point was called for Lucy. Jesse failed to back and thus was up; and when Lucy chased the birds that finished the brace. DAY 2 Brace 8: a) Rey – Joanne Perry b) Eagle – Bob Burchett Eagle had a short run as he ran through a covey at 20. Rey’s run was at moderate range. She had a feather find at 15, continuing on to score a find at 25. She had a non-productive at the watershed, then a nice covey at 48 before finishing forward. Brace 9 a) Doc – Dan Campbell b) Coal – John Perry Doc and Coal took to the front. Doc checked in with Dan and then forward he went, with a non-productive at 15 before scoring a find at 20. Coal continued out to the front running wide. Down in the canyon he had a non-productive at 35, while Doc had his 2nd non-productive at the woods on the gun dog side which finished his day. Point was called for Coal at 52 with a covey, all was good and he finished his run forward. Brace 10 a) Hedi – Bob Burchett b) Nova – Scott Johnson Hedi had a rabbit find at 6, then took out birds at 22. Nova’s run was also short-lived as she was not pleasing Scott, so he chose to pick her up at 15. Brace 11 a) Big Mac – Steve Chang b) Roscoe – Bob Burchett This afternoon was getting quite warm but Mac handled it very well. He made very nice casts and always to the front. Unfortunately, he went birdless. Mac finished as strong as he began. Roscoe had a non-productive at 25 and also handled the heat well, making nice moves to the front before he shortened up and Bob chose to pick him up. Brace 12 a) Oudi – Ed Tillson b) Slick – Bop Burchett Oudi seemed to be close ranging today, while Slick was gone from the get go, he was sighted with a stop to flush at 25, then out he went to the Custar sign with no other bird work in the brace. Oudi had a find at 48. Birds were up and Ed went down, but recovered gracefully while flushing before calling it a day. - CONTINUED ON THE BOTTOM OF PAGE 37 - The American Brittany ▬ 26 ▬ February 2024

2023 American Brittany Club Pheasant Classic Harms Cattle Company | Valentine, NE | 48 Starters | Judges: Dave Capstick and Jim Lawless Kent D. Patterson 1st: Piney Run Zack, Male, By Piney Run Jake X Piney Run Candy, o/h: Kent Patterson 2nd Piney Run Hilltop Blew, Male, By Piney Run Chalk X Piney Run Chicklet, o/h: Kent Patterson 3rd: Windancer’s Smok’N Joe, Male, By Windancer’s Hammerin Red Rebel X Windancer’s Renegade Sweet Tea, o: Josh and Max Bambach, h: Scott Johnson 4th: Jagoub’s Spell Caster: Female, By Jagoub’s Buzz’n Bayou X Super Natural, o: Tom & Debra Jagielski, h: Tom Tracy The American Brittany Club’s Pheasant Classic was the first “bird” classic created by the parent organization. From inception, it was a west coast staple running from 1960 to 1971, except in 1967 when held at Baldwinsville, NY. In 1972, it was held at Green River, IL and moved about from Pennsylvania, Oregon, Iowa, and South Dakota over the years following. In 2016, it landed on a spectacular venue, the Harms Cattle Company south of Valentine Nebraska. Hosted by the St. Croix Valley Brittany Club, Steve Ralph and wife, Lori work tirelessly to make sure all the particulars are covered. Other club members, Sue Januska and Bret Lindback were also on deck to lend additional support. Lori Ralph, Alicia Harms, and Barb Harms make sure no one goes hungry. The Pheasant Championship is proud to be associated with Purina and Garmin. These fine partners provide equipment or product in support of this sport in a broad and generous manner. Steve Chang, Rob Rohner, Ed Tillson, Scott Johnson, Mark Auman and Tom Tracy brought their string of competitors along with amateur handlers John and JoAnn Perry, Robbie Myers, Dan Campbell, Richard Beaver, Joe Williams, Burton Wice, Jack Alexander, Stan Williamson and Kent Patterson. Owners Bob Rankin, Crystal Alexander, Tom Jagielski, Steve Ralph, Sue Januska, Brett Lindback, and Mary Karbiner came to see their charges on these beautiful grounds. Ray and Mary Jo Trimble came out from Illinois along with Dennis Sullivan from Wyoming for portions of the event. We were blessed to have two judges with a wealth of experience and knowledge look over the field of starters. Jim Lawless, based out of Illinois, spends the summer on this very ranch fine tuning his string of talented pointers. Missouri’s seasoned amateur, Dave Capstick, has judged many championships at Grovespring and other venues. 1st: The champion was found in Piney Run Zack. The 3 yr old was coming off a good spring season winning the Region 4 Amateur All Age and Dixieland Championships.. Bred by Martha Greenlee of Baskerville VA, trained by Ben Lorenson of Corinna ME, and handled by his owner Kent Patterson, Zack spent the summer in the Sandhills honing his skills on Prairie Chickens and Sharptail Grouse. Released in the 4th brace, he was ambitious as the gallery traversed the west pasture where he went east into the sandhills. As he rimmed the north meadow, he dropped out of sight in a depression near the fence line and was found standing. A pheasant was pushed north with all manners in order. At 25, he was stopped near Big Alkali Lake with a large group of sharptails all around him. They cackled away upset to be found. As he rimmed the marsh along the lake, he froze. Kent took one step into the marsh and a pheasant shot west. He came The American Brittany ▬ 28 ▬ February 2024
through the feed lot and west meadow staying connected with his handler and disappeared over a knoll as pheasants went everywhere…he was credited with a stop to flush. At time, he was going over the hill toward the Lord meadow. He carried his speed, power, and dimension evenly throughout the hour. 2nd: Piney Run Hilltop Blew was the reigning Pheasant Champion with a memorable performance over these grounds the previous year and a placement in the Chicken Championship the prior week. He is the current ABC National Amateur All Age Champion. Bred by Martha Greenlee of Baskerville VA, trained by Ben Lorenson of Corinna ME, and handled by his owner Kent Patterson, Blew also spent the summer in the beautiful Sandhills honing his skills on Prairie Chickens and Sharptail Grouse. Running in the 11th brace and released in the Alkali Meadow, he was wide over the early portions of the hour and was seen dropping off into a creek line. As he was coming out, he spun hard on the banks edge with a boisterous pheasant pitching and rolling to the north as the gun crack was heard. He was showy through the Lord meadow and seen infrequently as the gallery traversed the Trout Hills. He was seen along the Harsh meadow fence going east as the gallery was coming out of the hills and came across the front at the far end of the Harsh Meadow as time was called. 3rd: Windancer’s SmokN’ Joe is a 4-year-old owned by Josh and Max Bambach on the string of Scott Johnson. He is a product of Windancer’s Hammerin Red Rebel X Windancer’s Renegade Sweet Teaa bred by John Wencley. He was released at the west end of the Lord meadow and showed nicely leading to the Trout Hills. Just inside the gate, he was pointed in grass over his head with Scott working to get the pheasant airborne. A nice find with all in order. He maintained the front and made eye catching swings through the hills as the party turns north. He was strong coming down to the Harsh meadow where he was watered in the creek and was going away strongly as time was called. 4th: Jaboub’s Spell Caster (Tabu) is owned by Tom and Debbie on the string of Tom Tracy and was runner up in the Pheasant Classic in 2022. She is out of the litter cross of Jagoub’s Buzz’n Bayou X Super Natural. She was cast off in the South Hills and was showy over the first half hour of the brace. She continued her front running efforts and was rewarded with a find at 40 near the marsh gate on a pheasant that shot west. The hour ended near the west meadow bale yard with her going away at time. THE RUNNING Brace 1: El Grande - (Myers) ; Piney Run Patch - (Patterson). 57 degrees and blue skies greeted the assembled entourage as the dogs dashed away at 8:04. Truman is a nicely gaited dog who headed west toward the old stacker with Patch swinging into the far end of west pasture. Truman didn’t show after some time had elapsed with Robbie asking for the tracker. He was found standing along a ditch bank. Patch’s hour was a true prairie all age effort but with no birds to his credit. Brace 2: Cedar Valley Zeke – (Tracy); My Lil Classic Mercedes - (Beaver). Released near the feed lot, Zeke and Cede were at moderate range early but building as we entered the Lord Meadow where Zeke ran over a pheasant along the marsh edge and got a ticket to the dog wagon. As we were entering the marsh chute a bird was seen going into the marsh with Cede showing a bit too much interest. Brace 3: Mr. Staley – (Cambell); CVK’s Spartan King – (Tracy). Doc and Leo were released in the marsh chute with rising temps. They traversed the ground near the burnt baler and were flashy entering the Trout Hills. Leo extended his cast south with Tommy and scout working to get him turned north. Doc was in contact throughout the hills and watered at Trout Lake followed by a find along the shore cover. Doc had a nonproductive on a hillside to the west as point was called for Leo on the north end of the lake with no birds moved. Doc was pointed at 37 with Dan whistling him on and a bird lifted to end his bid. At 45, Leo was entering the Harsh Meadow and had a 2nd nonproductive at time at the base of the south hills. Brace 4: Piney Run Zack – (Patterson); HVK Turns Back Time – (Tillson). Zack’s hour was detailed earlier. Mick is a young dog and handful for Ed over the early portion of the hour. He decided to call it quits at 20 as the gallery went through the last gate toward Alkali lake. Brace 5: Spanish Dancer – (Myers); Windancer’s Smok’N Joe – (Johnson). Sassy and Joe were released near the Lord Meadow. Joe’s hour was detailed earlier. Sassy had a nonproductive near Trout Lake at 20. She was seen infrequently through the Trout Hills as the course turns north and was lost near the bog meadow at time. Brace 6: Silverado – (Rohner); Burning Rock Chasseur Breton – (Auman). Both dogs were away into the South Hills and The American Brittany ▬ 29 ▬ February 2024
The American Brittany ▬ 30 ▬ January 2024 maintaining contact with their handlers as we drop down into the meadow east of the State Hills. At 25, in the swells of grass along the south margins of the marsh Silverado was under a bird and shortly thereafter Breton suffered the same fate. Brace 7: Big Mac XIV – (Chang); JoWill’s Daniel In The Lions Den – (Williams). Fog delayed the start until about 8:45. Mac and Daniel were away to the west. Daniel was pointed stylishly along the creek at 5 with Joe flushing in all directions with no success. When tapped on, Daniel took 4 steps and a bird lifted to end his day early. At 25, Mac made a big move on the east end of the north meadow that took some time to unfold but he came out with gusto and shot toward Alkali Lake. At 45, there was a workman-like effort searching for him in the marsh that ended with a request for the tracking receiver eventually found in the area where he disappeared standing birds. Brace 8: Almaden’s Under Lock and Key – (Tillson); Prairie Wind Pistol Pete – (Tracy). Oudi and Pede were in and out of pocket near the old stacker with Pede showing his sneakers on a hillside as the gallery heads for the Lord Meadow. At 20, Oudi was stopped in a ditch near the culvert crossing but no birds were produced. She wasn’t pleasing Ed as we started into the Trout Hills to end her hour. Pede was seen sparingly across the Lord Meadow with Tommy asking for the tracker at 45 near Trout Lake. Brace 9: Knine Finale’s Way to Go – (Tillson); Green Acres Jazzee – (Rohner). After a morning break of Alicia Harm’s homemade cinnamon rolls, we were away at 10:40 with Ally and Jazzee. Kenny Seivert was riding the dog wagon watching his charge that goes back to his dog Lester. Both dogs were busy as we departed Trout Lake into the hills leading toward the Harsh meadow and continued their forward efforts northward toward the South Hills. Jazzee was the first to come out of the hills but was hot as Rob decided to pick her up. Ally handled the Ballard Meadow nicely but went with a bird in the State Hills as the gallery headed toward camp for lunch. Brace 10: Ru-Jem’s Grand Touch Bourbon – (Williamson); Phillips’ Sir Louie Louie We Got To Go Now – (Johnson). Touch and Louie were away under cumulus clouds and temps in the 70’s. Touch streaked west toward the old stacker as Stan worked hard to get him turned. Louie briefly pointed a nice cow/calf pair in the west pasture then turned on the jets rimming the north meadow. At 35, Touch regained the front but then went backwards to get a pass to the dog wagon. Louie was under a bird at 40 to end the brace. Brace 11: WW’s Miss Carona – (Wice); Piney Run Hilltop Blew – (Patterson). Blew’s hour was outlined earlier. Rona is a nice female showing maturity beyond her young age. She was a handful on this afternoon making big swings in the Lord Meadow making her scout (Stan Williamson) earn every cent of his salary. She regained the front in the Trout Hills and dropped down in the Harsh meadow showing no let down in speed or dimension as time was called as we neared the Harsh Meadow windmill. She had no bird work to her credit. Brace 12: Roan Survivor – (Perry); JoWill’s Sweet Mandolin Music – (Williams). Ray and Manie were released into the South Hills with point being called for Ray at 10 in a bowl between two hills. JoAnn flushed and relocated to no avail. Manie had everyone sitting up as he sailed north but eventually came back around and seen by the judge near where Ray pointed. Both dogs were watered near the Ballard meadow where JoAnn elected to pick up. Manie continued toward the State Hills and had a find at 47 with all manners in order. Another find was scored near the gate perpendicular to the marsh at 50. At 58, Manny was pointed as a pheasant was seen running and too great a temptation to end his bid. Brace 13: AK’s Line of Credit – (Tracy); Sniksoh Diamond Jack – (Johnson). Cash and Jack were away at 8:06 under clear blue skies and 51 degrees. At 4, Cash was pointed along the creek bank with Jack backing. Cash’s find ended his hour as there were a few too many steps as the birds erupted from cover. Jack was strong around the north meadow but began to moderate a bit as we headed into the west meadow where the hour was up and him not having any bird work to his credit Brace 14: Cedar Valley Luke – (Tracy); WW’s Miss Wendy Peffercorn – (Wice). Luke and Wendy were released at 9:28 near the Lord Meadow entrance. Wendy was seen headed south toward the Churchill property as Burton rode east toward the Trout Hills. She was returned after an extended absence and was picked up at the entrance into the Trout Hills. Luke showed nicely through the Trout Hills with a non-productive and a stop to flush on the north end of Trout Lake. His hour ended at the entrance into the South Hills. Brace 15: Supernova – (Johnson); Godfather’s F.N. Rockstar – (Chang). Nova and Rocky sped away into the South Hills with rising temps. It was apparent early that Nova was not fond of all things that poke and prod a dog in the Nebraska Sandhills. Scott elected to pick up at 7. Rocky
was taking the grand tour through the hills with Steve doing his best to maintain a connection. By the time we reached the Ballard Meadow, the connection was lost. Brace 16: Diamond Hill Dangerous Big Bang – (Johnson); JWB’s Arctic Cat – (Tracy). Leonard and Kimber broke away at 1:30 with Kimber having a find at 9 the west pasture gate while Leonard was probing the fence line to the east. Kimber went deep to the east with a big move around the lake as the scout and handler tried to coax her back toward Alkali Lake. Leonard had been at moderate range over the first half of the hour with Scott electing to pick up at 38. Kimber was credited with a stop to flush near Alkali Lake and was cruising the edge of the marsh with the wind at her back when she ran over a pheasant to end her bid. Brace 17: WW’s Gin and Tonic – (Wice); Urban American Legend – (Chang). At 2:28, Ginee and Urbie were released in the Alkali Meadow. At 10, Urbie was standing with Ginee backing near a clump of trees in the feed lot, no birds were produced. Both dogs sprinted out to the west meadow with Urbie going into a ring of cover and found standing. Steve flushed extensively with no luck and elected to pick up. Ginee was flashy over the next half hour and watered at Trout Lake as the teal and geese paddled away from shore. She continued her probing manners to the Harsh meadow where the hour ended with no bird work to her credit. Brace 18: Piney Run White Lightning – (Johnson); Roustabout Freddie M – (Tracy). Buzz and Freddie were released near the windmill at the base of the South Hills. Both dogs were flashy and forward through the rolling landscape that leads to the Ballard Meadow. They dropped out the hills together with Buzz being a handful to get turned back west. Freddie was posed regally along a clump of cover in the Ballard Meadow with Tommy moving pheasants. A pretty find. Freddie had a nonproductive at 32 as we entered the State Hills. Buzz was up at 37 after a stop to flush turned into a few too many steps. Freddie continued his impressive hour with a cast down the marsh edge and disappeared. The scout found him pointed on a ditch bank and he sat back as Tommy began his flushing attempt. Brace 19: Wild Wild Jax – (Tillson); Code of Noble – (Chang): Jax and Morris were away at 8:06 and moved nicely over the first quarter of the hour. As the gallery entered the north meadow, Jax went west and Morris took the east route as the course swings around the end of the marsh. Ed was having some difficulty get Jax turned and elected to pick up at 23. At 40, Morris had stop to flush in the Alkali meadow followed by a clean find in the feed lot. At 52, we entered the west meadow with a nice pheasant find in the cover at 54. The hour ended near the west meadow culvert crossing. Brace 20: Jagoub’s Whodat Say Whodat When I say Whodat? – (Tracy); TJ’s Black Diamond – (Perry): Whodat and Coal sailed away toward the Lord Meadow with point being called to the east near the bale lot at 20 for Coal. The birds had lifted by the time the judge arrived so a shot was fired and he was taken on around the north end of the marsh. Both dogs were together as we entered the Trout Hills and throughout the swing near the lake. At 52, we crossed the Harsh Meadow and into the South Hills where the hour ended. Brace 21: Jagoub’s Spell Caster – (Tracy); TMR’s Lucky Bets – (Chang). Tabu’s hour was outlined earlier. Bets was released in the South Hills and showed nicely over the first half hour as the course runs through the Ballard Meadow and State Hills. He probed the edges of cover as the course swings near camp. He suffered a nonproductive in the rolling grass hills south of the marsh at 38. The brace ended near the West Meadow bale yard where Bets had a 2nd nonproductive. Brace 22: Ripper’s Tequila Bandit – (Auman); Jagoub’s Pleistarchus – (Tracy). Bandit and Plei were away to the west at 1:06. Both are young dogs that were doing their bumper car imitations with Mark electing to pick up. Plei continued to play as the gallery was being entertained by Steve Chang’s scouting skills being thwarted at every turn by the youngster. They finally got order restored at about the 7-minute mark with Tommy picking up. Brace 23: Wingra’s Indy-Go! – (Tillson); Andre’s American Graffiti – (Chang). Indy and Andy were away from the west pasture windmill as temps were in the mid 70’s. Andy was under a bird at 5 to end his bid as Indy went west. Jessica was trying her best to coax Indy back to the course that runs east. She called point and as the judges were riding to the dog, it was seen running farther west with Jessica asking for the tracker at 11. Brace 24: Spartan King Kidd – (Williamson); Nobel Southpaw – (Chang). Kidd and Manny were away from the North Meadow gate. Stan wasn’t pleased with Kidd’s early application and elected to pick up at 8. Manny’s hour was filled with showy casts and smart moves. He put on a championship winning ground application and just needed a bird. The American Brittany ▬ 31 ▬ February 2024
I know, I know, the title of this story is a bit cliché, but it’s true, and all you need to get started is a new puppy! You see, I’m the “old dog” in this short story; I needed something to get me re-focused on my life and help me take my mind off what my doctors had just told me. At 56, I almost left this planet because my heart wasn’t strong enough to keep me going. Congestive heart failure was wearing me out until one particular night in the hospital. Divine intervention put a miracle worker with me, and he saved my life. I was literally given a second chance. My team of doctors was amazed as they didn’t expect me to regain consciousness. That second chance has allowed me to try and achieve some of the things I always wanted to do. At the top of the list was to have a champion bird dog at some point in my life. Well, my doctors told me that they expected my life expectancy to be about five years at best, so if I wanted to get things in order, now was a good time. I figured that I better figure out how and where to begin. The beginning was actually at the end, or at least the near end of my life. I had to evaluate whether I could achieve just part of my dream of having a champion bird dog. Fortunately for me, I have been blessed with a bride with endless patience and support. After months of getting back into the game of life and dealing with my new challenges, we started searching for a new Brittany puppy. I absolutely love the breed: anyone who has ever owned one knows why they are amazing companions. Debbie and I had a Brittany, “Doc” Holiday, for 15 and a half years before he passed away of old age. He was a great friend. Unfortunately, though, through all those years with him, I was never quite able to dedicate the time to train him properly for bird hunting. I spent too much time with my business chasing the dollar and the clock on the wall. Now, I have a totally different perspective on things. I am no longer chasing the dollar; I’ve accepted to be content with what I have, and as far as the clock on the wall, well, I’ve accepted that I can’t do a thing about that except appreciate and enjoy the time I have left. Here’s the part where I say that it’s true: you can teach an old dog new tricks. Shortly after Doc passed away, I began to long for another Brittany. Debbie and I discussed the possibility of a new puppy for quite some time and got down to the “what ifs.” What if the puppy is too much for me to handle? What if I get weaker? What if I can’t properly train and handle the dog? There was a long list of negative “what ifs.” Then, we made a list of positive “what ifs.” What if the puppy gets me motivated physically and mentally? What if the puppy challenges me to focus on the positive side of things? What if the puppy can teach me new things as I watch him grow and explore his world? We started searching casually for a breeder and decided not to get too excited because this new venture may take a while. We made a few phone calls, left a few messages, and even had a few conversations, but nothing felt quite right. We thought that the roadblocks were there for a reason and that we should not pursue the idea of getting a new puppy. We waited a while and then decided to check out the AKC website to see what they had to offer with regard to the Brittany specifically and to see if they could lead us in the right direction. We contacted a few breeders listed on the website and left a few messages, but we needed to be more optimistic that the stars would align with us anytime soon. Well, we were wrong! One evening, I received a phone call from a breeder who said, “My wife said that you called and that I had to call you back and talk to you.” When I called and left a message, I explained what I was going through and that I wanted to pursue my dream of owning a Brittany bird dog. The breeder and I spoke for quite some time. I spoke, and he listened carefully, as he took this very seriously; not just anyone will be blessed with one of his puppies. I am super excited that Debbie and I are now the proud owners of one of his orange and white Brittany You CAN Teach An ‘Old Dog’ NEW TRICKS by: DANA MASTERS Tales from our ABC Community The American Brittany ▬ 32 ▬ February 2024
puppies, “Johnny Ringo,” named after the infamous gunslinger of the Old West. Now, I’m returning to the title of my little story, “Old Dog, New Tricks.” Here are some of the tricks I learned. Trick #1: I redirected my focus to something new, exciting, challenging, and fun. No more “all work and no play.” Trick #2: I opened my eyes and mind, started exploring new things, and re-learning things that I “thought” I already knew. Trick #3: I started being more active and feeling better about myself, my feelings regarding my situation, and how it affected others. You see, carrying the news my doctors gave me was somewhat burdensome and, at times, difficult to deal with. Trick #4: I allowed myself to get excited about this new adventure of having a bird dog and started looking forward to the future regarding training days and hunt tests. Hunt tests were quite challenging for me as I was trying too hard to learn as much as I could and as fast as I could because I struggled to get past the thought of having maybe only a few years left to live; this is where trick #5 comes into play. Trick 5, I learned to have patience and regained a positive mindset. Trick #6 is finding and spending more time with my bride and sharing in something we both love to do. The “trick” list is quite long, but I think you understand where all this is going. One of the biggest things I’ve had to learn was to pace myself. I started out trying to accomplish too much too fast, and I was making a ton of mistakes, thus creating a lot of unnecessary frustration for myself. By utilizing the “tricks” I was re-learning, I started seeing that Ringo and I were making some steady progress during training. As it turned out, Ringo was training me as much as I was training him, all for the good, I might add. Phil Thayer of Birch Spring Brittanys, our breeder, has taken me under his wing (pun intended) and has helped Debbie and me with extra training, advice, and handling Ringo as I’m still not really where I need to be in the physical aspect of bird dog training. I don’t like to admit it, but I’m a little slow-moving in the bird field and struggle to keep up with Ringo; physical fatigue leads to mental fatigue, and things get complicated. Phil sees Ringo’s potential and wants to see him go as far as possible in fieldwork. Debbie and I worked with Ringo regularly on basics and on live quail; he was coming along great, but my anxiety, especially during hunt tests, was holding him back. This is where Phil made Ringo shine and helped build my confidence regarding training. He offered to handle Ringo for me on his upcoming junior hunt tests. Ringo achieved qualifying scores on three consecutive tests. This proved that we were doing something right during training and gave me the extra boost of confidence I needed to try handling myself again. Debbie and I scheduled the 4th hunt test and traveled to Connecticut for the last test of the season. Ringo received an excellent qualifying score and achieved his junior hunt title that weekend. Well, I’m 61 now and still on the planet; my doctors say that my heart is still in a serious condition, but they’re feeling more optimistic that if I keep doing what I’ve been doing, I’ll be able to stick around longer than they initially thought. I hope to reach my goal of having a champion bird dog. We can’t wait for the 2024 season, working with Ringo toward his next bird dog title. So, with all that being said, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. All you need is a new Brittany puppy! Do you have a story about your dog? Brace 15 c) Leonard – Scott Johnson d) Flash – Bob Burchett Leonard had a stop to flush at 11, then at 24 a nice covey. He was working closely for Scott but slowly tuned him out and was picked up at 30. Flash was gone from the breakaway. With no sighting at 14, Bob pulled the tracker. Brace 17 a) Hatch – Bob Burchett b) Olliver – Harlan Gerardy Both dogs hit the ground and were gone. Bob pulled the tracker at 15 for Hatch. Oliver came up after being out of pocket and headed for water. At 25 point was called. As Harlan was flushing, Oliver left point and was ordered up. Brace 18 a) Urbi – Steve Chang b) Hank – Mike Poehler Hank decided he was ending his day very early. At 2, he went through a nice size covey. Urbi backed the incident. Urbi handled nicely with a covey find at 7 by the watershed, then an un-productive at 15. He seemed to be a bit lateral and at 26, Steve opted to pick up. The American Brittany ▬ 36 ▬ February 2024
