Your 2024 Donor Advised Fund Statement Enclosed is your organization’s 2024 Donor Advised Fund (DAF) statement, showing activity through 9/30/24 and including earnings from the 2023 Purina Parent Club Partnership Program (PPCP). Want to know more about how your Donor Advised Fund (DAF) held at CHF works? When you direct your donations, you’re not just giving, you’re choosing to fund specific research areas. Your Donor Advised Fund (DAF) held at CHF is a powerful tool that allows you to steer your support towards the areas that matter most to you. Your DAF grows at CHF and your participation in the Purina Parent Club Partnership Program (PPCPP) maximizes those efforts, increasing your impact and investment in canine health. Purina tracks weight circle submissions for Pro Club members, and one-half of each club’s individual annual earnings is issued directly to CHF to support research. With your DAF, you have the flexibility to guide support towards CHF-funded grants or research programs whenever you choose. Simply contact [email protected] or call 888-682-9696 to explore impactful projects or complete a research sponsorship form to receive regular updates on your chosen research. These updates can be shared with your constituents, further amplifying the impact of your support. Per the Purina Participation Agreement signed in 2019, breed clubs participating in the PPCPP agree to move funds deposited by Purina into the DAF towards research that benefits their breed. If a club does not allocate funds within 24 months, 25% of the PPCPP earnings will be directed to general canine health research, noted under ‘Research Support’ in the statement above. MOTION made by Barb Shepard to refer this to the Health Committee for recommendation. 2nd by Vickie Margolis. MOTION PASSED. The Liaison will contact the Health Committee Chair with this information. JANUARY 2025 MAGAZINE: Bonnie is questioning whether I will be sending her the labels for the January 2025 magazine until the first few days of January 2025. With the old printer that was what was done as we must wait to see who renews their dues and remove the members that do not. I’m asking the board if they want the labels for the January 2025 issue sent at the normal time (December 15th) or to wait and remove the non-renewing people. If we wait to send the labels until the first few days of January, the magazine will not be mailed until early to mid-January. People do receive the pdf version. MOTION made by Carey Killion to delay the printing of the WCA Magazine by 2 weeks. Labels of those who have not paid their dues by the due date will not receive a January magazine. 2nd by Kayleen Klier. MOTION PASSED. AKC is offering a free litter registration to the Best Bred by Exhibitor winner at a designated specialty, all-breed/group show. MOTION made by Barb Shepard to offer a free litter registration at our National Specialty for the Best Bred-By Exhibitor. 2nd by Kayleen Klier. MOTION PASSED. Cindy received an email asking for a referral to Weim/GSP mix breeders. The board discussed the best response to such inquiries. Cindy was instructed to respond to the inquirer that the WCA is the parent club for pure-bred Weimaraners only. The Public Education Committee will be cc’d on that email. The liaison to the Public Education Committee will follow up with that committee. TREASURER REPORT: Robbe sent the year-end report of accounts. There was a question regarding the balance sheet and what is being listed as accounts payable. Tabled until Esteri can talk with Robbe. DELEGATE REPORT, submitted by Jennifer Martin Jen was not able to attend the past meeting due to surgery. However, she will be attending the December meeting in Orlando. She mentioned that the color issue is an ongoing issue, and continues to be a topic on the Delegate agenda. Jen is hopeful that AKC will allow the words “Non-Standard Color” next to “Blue” on the registration. Julie suggested the leaflet sent out with all Weimaraner puppies when they are registered with the AKC to include verbiage explaining the Blue Weim is not an acceptable color. A lengthy discussion ensued regarding the registration of Blue Weimaraner, and what if any future steps can be taken by the WCA to remove the color Blue as a registration choice. Jennifer will research if there is a way to rescind a previous letter allowing registration of Blue Weimaraners. There will be a discussion regarding smaller all-breed clubs being pushed out by larger clusters and what if anything AKC can do to help the smaller clubs who do not cluster with other clubs for shows. Legislation continues to be of great concern to all of us in the dog world. Jennifer wants all WCA members to please pay attention to the Legislation emails that the Chair of the Legislation Committee puts together. These issues affect us all, not just breeders, conformation shows, field trials, and EVERYTHING dog-sport related. All WCA members are invited to contact Jennifer if there are any questions or concerns regarding AKC. MOTION PASSED Activity Summary: • The committee monitored 198 legislative alerts from AKC through October 2024 and sent out appropriate alerts to WCA members or updates where action was needed. AKC monitored 1,805 pieces of legislation through October, 2024. The chair of this committee prepared an article for the WCA Magazine explaining the difference between AKC Canine Legislative Support Fund (CLSF) and the AKC Political Action Committee (AKC PAC) and encourage people to donate to both or either fund. We also responded to WCA members’ questions regarding legislation and answered questions regarding the CDC’s new import rules for 2024. We attended Webinars put on by AKC regarding legislation, including critical proposed legislation regarding torture breeding. Planned Activities: We expect to have a busy legislative session in 2025 due to the animal rights organizations teaming up with lobbyists to pass anti-breeder laws, anti-tail docking laws, torture breeding laws and other restrictive laws which may affect breeding programs and animal ownership. We will be monitoring all legislation from several sources (AKC, Legiscan, National Animal Interest Alliance, local legislation groups, etc.). We plan to continue to attend and learn from AKC webinars and to encourage local clubs and the National club to invite local politicians to attend dog shows and performance events so that they can see what they are about and put a positive spin on what we do. Most politicians have no clue about dog shows and performance events. The AR organizations only show politicians awful reporting on dogs, dog shows and performance events and then try to push through restrictive legislation limiting breeding, hunting, and any activity with dogs. Recommendation: • We recommend that the BOD continue to support our committee in letting members know that it is important to assist with the defeat or passage of laws when we send alerts. We understand that sometimes members do not want to read the emails and get involved. However, when it is legislation from their state, their participation is needed. Rationale: • Encouraging members to stay involved is extremely important. Miscellaneous: • We want to thank Executive Secretary, Cindy James Moore, for her timely forwarding of emails to the appropriate WCA members for each state when we send her the Legislative Alert emails. We also thank the BOD members who have been responsive to our committee’s needs. Judge’s Education, submitted by Mary Ellen Macke The Judges Education Committee has had no requests for a presentation since April. I am working on completing the Canine College Presentation and have just been notified that the photographers will be in Orlando for the Royal Canin Show. We still need some good movement video to complete the presentation. Anyone going to Orlando for the AKC show can make an appointment with the Canine College photographers and get the movement video done. This entire process has been long and we still need some good side gait shots as well as coming and going. I will continue to serve as the Judges’ Ed Chair and would like for the committee to be comprised of: Steph Meyer, Suzanne Burns, Derek Beatty, Autumn StewartZimmerman, Linda Bailey I have asked each of them if they will serve again but have not heard back from a couple of them yet. I will amend this report if needed. After discussion, the Board tabled this committee until the criteria for members to be on this committee has been reevaluated. It has been an honor to represent the WCA and to hopefully contribute to communications about Weimaraners. The other day I realized that I have held this position for fifteen years, written seventy columns and done various other writing assignments for the WCA. I want to thank the WCA for entrusting this responsibility to me and I hope that I have added good solid information with an occasional touch of humor. The next column is not due until January 15, 2025, and I will be happy to work with the new correspondent in the transition. All previous columns have been transmitted to the WCA magazine when they were published in the Gazette so there should be no additional files to be sent. Thank you for the opportunity to write about our wonderful breed. Carole Lee Richards The board wishes to thank Carole for her years of wonderful articles that represent the Weimaraner. MONTHLY CONFERENCE MINUTES are local people that can help Kelly set-up and/or break down for MTB our committee would appreciate that greatly. All assisting in this event will be publicly recognized by the Committee in our report following MTB. There will be a signin and sign-out book to make sure everyone is involved is recognized. Susan will be shipping Kelly a flip-book to have for the event on January 11. We will likely have a video of still pics that can continuously run during the event. Melissa Hampton has contacted me and will be addressing her local club regarding participation in the MTB event, and that is appreciated. We will be uploading any up loadable materials used during MTB to the password-protected “Public Education Materials” section on the WCA website to be available for future committee members. 2. “Weims Just Wanna Have Fun”: An article will be submitted for the next issue by Kelly Ann Kwiatek on Rally. We would like the following article to be on Dock Diving and Susan is in discussion with Dundee’s owners (Dundee was a dock diving finalist in the Hydro Dash Division recently). We will continue to actively pursue future submissions. 3. Weim National 2025: The Committee would like to have a presence in the form of a manned “Weims Just Wanna Have Fun” booth at the Weim National in 2025. Rationale: • For the manned booth at the National: to further promote the fun activities aside from conformation at our national specialty week. To bring awareness to many people who might just be there with their show dog (s). MOTION made by Barb Shepard to approve the committee as submitted. 2nd by Kayleen Klier. MOTION PASSED Field Committee, submitted by: Mary B. Brown Activity Summary: • The committee requested donations and held an online auction for the Derby Stipend in November 2024. A hearty thank-you to Camille Rice for setting up the auction and to all who donated. This raised approximately $1900.00 for the derby stipend fund. The final amount is pending. San Francisco Weimaraner Club is interested in hosting the 2025 Western Classic and the WCWDCA is exploring dates for the 2025 Eastern in late March or early April. San Antonio Weimaraner Club hosted the 2024 Mid-America in November and offered two regional stakes for OGD and AGD. The Committee approved and forwarded to the Board a request from Orange Coast Weim Club to host an All-breed Regional OLGD Stake in January 2025. The Committee chair reached out to the Ex. Director at the National Bird Dog Hall of Fame. Provided names of two dogs and people nominated for induction into the National HOF in February 2025, following Board approval in October. Currently working on information for the Booklet that the HOF puts together for the induction ceremony. The committee was notified that rent/annual contribution for HOF was not paid in 2024. A private donor covered this for 2024. The Chair requested clarification re: amount and date it is to be paid. An email will be sent to the Chair in January 2025 and will be due by the beginning of February. Space to hang current, as well as incoming, dogs & people in the HOF is limited. Our practice of hanging pictures of the winners from the WCA National event is time limited due to the need to ensure we have space to hang pictures of those inducted into the hall of fame. We are the only breed to use space to hang pictures of the winners at our national event. We were informed that we “do not have space” to hang pictures of people who were inducted into the HOF last year. Last year we were asked to downsize pictures of HOF dogs to 8X10’s. We are working on an inventory of pictures to determine whether there are pictures of former winners at our national event that need to be returned to owners. This will free up space to ensure that HOF inductees are hanging and then is feasible we can continue hanging the most recent winners at Nationals. Planned Activities: 1. Confirm balance in derby stipend fund with money raised in auction. We had limited donations and response to the auction. A discussion re: interest in the derby stipend and whether the committee can continue to be successful in raising funds will be set for an agenda in 2025. 2. Continue to work on host clubs for Classic events in 2025. 3. Continue to work with the National Bird Dog Hall of Fame re: 2025 inductees and ensure ren/annual contribution is covered in 2025. 4. Complete an inventory of pictures at National Bird Dog HOF and return pictures to owners of former winners of the National Field Trial(s). Date TBD. 5. Gather feedback from host clubs re: the option to have the AKC Regional Stakes in conjunction with a Classic Event. Recommendation: • Approve list of WCA members willing to serve on the 2025 WCA Field Committee. (See attachment) Committee Chair: Mary B. MOTION PASSED. An application from the SFWC to host the Western after I had already submitted the committee report to you on 11/20. I emailed the Field committee and have approval from a majority of committee members. I know the club is anxious to get approval since they want to host an AKC Regional OLGD stake - to avoid late fees for the application the Board needs to review and approve the request in December if possible. In my committee report, I shared that SF was working on the application. I just did not have it time for the initial report. Please let me know if this can be forwarded to the Board as an addendum to what I sent. Mary Mary joined the in-person meeting on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. There is a time issue from when local clubs can secure grounds and the timeline required by AKC to submit applications for AKC Regional Championship Stakes. The Field Committee is asking for a way to expedite the process. The Board can approve applications for field trials by local clubs via Unanimous Resolutions. The National Bird Dog Hall of Fame (BDHF) is expecting the annual donation to be paid prior to February 1, 2025. Failure to pay may result in losing the front wall space. The WCA Treasurer will send the donation to the BDHF. There is limited space available to the Weimaraner, and the space needs to be prioritized and kept as a Hall of Fame display. Members should be reminded that all donations to the Bird Dog Hall of Fame need to specify that the donation is for the Weimaraners. Motion passed. The Board discussed succession planning for the committees and those serving on the committees. To keep the organization running Communications Committee, submitted by Bonnie Hill Committee Chair: Bonnie Hill Members: Amanda Frutos Activity Summary: • We have come up with our editorial calendar for 2025. We firmed up pricing for 2025 and have it implemented for the new year. We created a new opportunity for the Annual Stud Dog issue (DEC) to add a directory which consists of 3 dogs per page in alphabetical order. This was a success in other breeds and we felt it would be a great way to help members who would like to support the club by advertising but needed a lower price point. It looks to have been well received by the WCA members as well. Planned Activities: • We continue to source relatable content that is relevant to the main feature of each monthly issue of the magazine. Where we have a TBD as the listed “feature” we are looking for content ideas that the members would like to see. Recommendation: • We would like to get a response if the Field Committee or the Club would want the digital magazine mailed to Field Judges. Rationale: • We already send an electronic version of the WCA Magazine to Conformation judges. We can also send to Field Trial approved Judges if the want is there. Miscellaneous: • We want to thank the committees that have been diligent in sending content monthly. It has been a great addition to the magazine and we have had wonderful comments from judges The Board discussed the merits of having the sub-committees that fall under the Communication Committee should be included as members of the Communication Committee. This will be under New Business at a future meeting. • Bremar Pedigree Database: IP attorney contacted, referred to Estate attorney. After further discussion, more clarification is needed regarding conditions upon the passing of the property. There is more information needed as to the underlying data being put into the database. The Patunoff would like the language of what the Board would like to make this happen. • Frequency of email blasts: Explore options to decrease the frequency and number of email blasts to the membership. A discussion of the number of email blasts sent to members was reviewed. The members seem to respond positively when reminded of issues needing their attention. There will be no change in the frequency at which they are sent. • Perpetual Trophy Storage: We need to explore the WCA policy on the liability of stored trophies. Currently, trophies not won or not taken by the winner are kept with the club hosting the event. Clubs and individuals are reluctant to store the trophies because of liability issues in case of damage or theft. This is being forwarded to the Field Committee for recommendation on how to proceed. The board will provide the Field Committee with the value of the trophies, the insured value, and how often the trophies are taken into possession by the winners. • Informing Membership of Election Results: Standardize the method and timing of informing the members of the election results. The membership will be notified of the election results after the Secretary notifies the candidates who are running for a Board position. The voting results will be published with the vote tallies in the Board minutes. A Standing Resolution will be made “Results with vote tallies will be published in the Board meeting minutes. The membership will be informed of the election results after the candidates have been informed.” NEW BUSINESS • WCA Magazine Editor’s proposed contract. MOTION made by Julie Aune to approve the WCA Magazine Editor contract as submitted. 2nd by Carey Killion. MOTION PASSED. • Review magazine policy and pricing Current Magazine Policy sent as an attachment Tabled to January • Select Nominating Committee Chair MOTION made by Vickie Margolis to nominate Carey Killion as Nominating Committee Chair. 2nd by Esteri Hinman. MOTION PASSED. • By-Laws: Possibly seating an ad hoc committee to review and advise what if any changes to the WCA By-Laws need to be updated to conform to current practices and AKC policy. AKC By-Laws binder is attached for reference. Barb Shepard will review AKC’s policy/template for By-Laws and the WCA By-Laws and report back to the Board. • Review process for upgrading to family membership: Currently at dues renewal time, a single membership may be upgraded to a family membership without the added family member going through the membership vetting process. After some discussion, the Board maintains that all potential members must go through the membership process whether as a new additional family member or an individual applying as a new member. • Review allowing non-members to receive WCA Ratings without first becoming a member. Getting a Ratings title is a privilege of membership. In keeping with the WCA Ratings rules, all owners and co-owners of dogs running in WCA Ratings must be current WCA members. John will compose a directive to all local clubs informing them of the rules, and they will be enforced. The Executive Secretary will mail the directive to all Local Club Secretaries. • On-Line Project Management Application: The possibility of using an On-Line project managing application to help keep track of all the tasks, committees, and projects. There was a discussion. Esteri will look into using a free project app for the Board to use as a prototype system to keep track of projects, and responsibilities of board members and committees. MOTION PASSED. Meeting adjourned at 12:42 pm Central Time Respectfully Submitted, Vickie Margolis WCA Secretary We continue to monitor legislation and attend AKC webinars regarding legislation targeted at making it illegal to breed or sell an animal that has a birth deformity that causes suffering, such as brachycephaly. As previously discussed, people assume this legislation is directed strictly toward brachycephalic breeds; however, it also covers ANY breed who had any “birth defect” and no real definition of birth defect (this could be as simple as a cleft palate) and provides criminal offenses for the breeder. This legislation was not defeated and we can expect to see it reintroduced and spreading across the country along with legislation for mandatory spay/ neuter, no artificial insemination, no tail docking, no ear cropping, no removal of dew claws, etc. The Animal Rights (AR) groups have subtly been conditioning the public in many ways, including “no tail docking” via a movement to have breeders not crop tails and show the dogs at AKC events and other venues, even though their breed standard calls for tail docking. There is a Facebook Group, as an example, called “Tales of Judging Tails” where people who choose not to dock tails in accordance with their breed standard, enter AKC shows and then post which judges will ignore it and which judges to avoid. They have a ToJT List (To Judge Tails) of AKC judges to show their dogs/bitches to at AKC shows. On another front, AR uses advertising (and influence on companies) to condition the public to view dogs with their natural tails. Recently IAMS dog food had a commercial with a Weimaraner who had an undocked tail. I looked up the commercial to confirm that it was a Weimaraner with an undocked tail, after seeing this ad run during the playoffs. If breeders are now supporting undocked tails not in compliance with their breed standard, then it won’t be long before we will see AR succeed in their proposed legislation to ban docking tails. As a club, the WCA needs to strongly encourage its members to support the breed standard. By WCA members showing their dogs with undocked tails in AKC shows, they are playing into the hands of the AR movement, whether they realize it or not, and doing so does not support the breed standard. I realize it is a serious fault and not a DQ, but it supports the AR’s position of undocked tails. Another hot topic this year is “torture breeding.” This would include artificial insemination or any “unnatural” breeding. If AR is successful in banning artificial insemination under its broad definition of torture breeding, then frozen semen will be out and also any AI for a bitch that may have issues breeding naturally. As we begin the new legislative sessions, we will be inundated with AR sponsored legislation that must be opposed. The AR movement is well funded and is against crating, dog shows, breeding, AI, training, agility, performance, hunting and just about anything one would do or enjoy with a dog/cat. When you receive a Legislative Alert for your state, we appreciate anything you can do to help defeat it. 2025 Legislation – Here We Go! BY: Susan Shrigley Reprinted from THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE, JULY 2010 For those who don’t know me I have been involved with Weimaraners for the best part of 40 years and have bred successfully under the GHOSTWIND prefix in Australia. I am an International All Breeds Judge approved to judge All Breeds under all countries rules and regulations including In the early 2000s the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) joined forces with the intent of preventing tail docking in Australia. These two bodies canvassed the Australian government and garnered support in their quest and soon we saw several states in Australia succumbing to a tail docking ban. Because all states in Australia have their own independent government, legislation in the states varied. When the issue was first brought to the attention of the dog fraternity, many of us were of the belief that the ban would never get through. However, as there were some dog people who supported this action, the movement gained impetus, and ultimately resulted in the total ban of tail docking in all states in Australia, with the only exception being docking for therapeutic reasons. Prior to the total ban, the state of Western Australia still allowed breeders to dock tails for prophylactic purposes, as long the procedure was done by a registered vet. This option was available to anyone in Australia who wanted to dock, but required the pups to be born in WA and have the docking performed there. This was not an option for most breeders. Hence, the majority of breeders either didn’t dock, or only tipped (removing just the top few vertebrae) the tails and hoped that they got away with it. For those who did dock in WA, (myself being one), we were vulnerable to complaints by those in favor of the ban, which were lodged with the RSPCA. The resulting action was RSPCA Officers visiting our property and the property of other breeders to investigate allegations of cruelty to animals. These complaints were NOT founded as we had the supporting documentation from the vet to legalise the docking procedure. Unfortunately, this situation brought out the bad sports in our chosen hobby. If they couldn’t beat you in the ring then lodge a complaint with the RSPCA and you might get rid of the opposition. IF YOU DON’T STOP THE MOVEMENT NOW YOU MAY LIVE TO REGRET IT. I understand there has been some dialogue by members of the WCA requesting that dogs with undocked tails be allowed to be exhibited without penalty of fault. To do this they want the Weimaraner Standard changed to state that an undocked tail is not a fault. If you allow these changes to go through you will see it is the tip of the iceberg that may well lead to a total docking ban in your country. PETA and other animal rights groups will view this action as a division in the Weimaraner community and act to take advantage of a perceived weakness on the WCA tail docking position. The total ban on tail docking in Europe began in just this way. YOU MUST ALL STICK TOGETHER and fight this movement! In New Zealand, the dog exhibitors had witnessed what happened in Australia, and they rallied the farmers for support. The farmers feared that that crutching of sheep and mulsing would be the next procedures to be banned after tail docking. With the support of the farming community, and its numbers, the NZ Government backed down, and tail docking remains legal in New Zealand. You must remain vigilant; we weren’t vocal enough in Australia and have now paid the price, a total ban on tail docking. Note: the majority of breeders in Australia and Europe are extremely unhappy with the docking ban. Natural Weimaraner tails are thin and weak, and subject to frequent and painful injury. The fancy is also very unhappy with the departure from historic breed type, and in addition, some pedigrees produce tails which are carried high and when undocked, curl over the dog’s back. Please think long and hard about your position on this important issue. Remember that exhibiting a Weimaraner with a natural tail is allowed, although subject to a fault. There are only 3 disqualifications in the standard; height, coat color and coat length. Tail Docking: An Australian Breeder’s Perspective THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 1 5 ▬

Health HEALTH Is it really necessary to test your pets for certain diseases at the annual veterinary visit? And what about paying for vaccinations and monthly preventive medications? Dr. Gene Pavlovsky, director of Veterinary Medicine South Clinic, part of the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, asserts that these measures can’t be skipped when it comes to heartworm and Lyme disease. Both are potentially life threatening. Prevention and Testing Keep Pets Safe from Heartworm, Lyme Disease Pet Pulse May 11, 2024 by Lauren Bryan WHAT IS LYME DISEASE? “Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that commonly affects dogs and only rarely cats,” explains Dr. Pavlovsky. “The bacteria, from a genus called Borrelia, are transmitted via a bite from a tick.” For this reason, the Lyme disease vaccination is recommended for dogs that frequently go outdoors where there are ticks. Lyme disease may not cause noticeable symptoms right away, or ever. However, it may cause chronic illness resulting in arthritis, nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys), or even kidney failure. “Most dogs infected with Lyme disease do not show any clinical signs. In many cases, one finds out that a dog was infected by seeing a positive result on a routine screening test,” says Dr. Pavlovsky. “A small proportion of infected dogs, between 5% and 10%, may develop problems several months after infection. The signs usually include fever, reduced appetite, swollen joints, limping, vomiting, increase in thirst and urination, or lethargy.” Because most pets do not show signs of having Lyme disease, early detection is particularly important. Routine screening can detect Borrelia antibodies in the blood, and when treatment is necessary, it involves a course of antibiotics. WHAT ARE HEARTWORMS? Heartworm disease results from a parasitic worm, not a bacterial infection. “Heartworms are blood-borne parasites that infect dogs and cats,” Dr. Pavlovsky states. “When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it will ingest heartworms in the early immature stages of life along with the blood meal. Then that mosquito will transmit the heartworms to other animals via a bite.” Dogs are more likely than cats to become infected with heartworms. However, no treatment options exist for heartworm disease in cats. Therefore, it’s important to prevent heartworms in our feline friends by administering preventive medications. In contrast to Lyme, which poses a higher risk for pets that go outside often, heartworm prevention is important for both indoor and outdoor pets. “Mosquitoes are present in most parts of the country, and they are able to gain access to indoor environments. Even dogs and cats that rarely or never go outside are still susceptible to the disease,” says Dr. Pavlovsky. After entering the pet’s body through the mosquito bite, the worm grows to maturity within the animal. “Over a period of several months, heartworms can reach several inches in length. They take up residence in blood vessels around the heart and sometimes in the heart itself,” Dr. Pavlovsky explains. HEARTWORM DISEASE SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT “Presence of these worms incites inflammation and subsequent damage to the heart, surrounding blood vessels, and lungs. In severe cases, heartworms can be numerous and large enough to cause obstruction to blood flow and sudden death.” Symptoms of heartworm disease include coughing, weight THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 1 6 ▬

HEALTH loss, and reduced activity levels. Heartworm treatment requires time and can be expensive. “Treatment of heartworm disease is quite involved and is available only for dogs. There is no effective and safe treatment for cats. Treatment may involve injectable and/or oral and topical medications to kill the various stages of worms and is usually administered over several months or longer,” Dr. Pavlovsky states. In severe circumstances in which the worms completely block one of the heart valves, the surgical removal of heartworms can be done as a last resort due to high risk and the cost of surgery ranging between $1,000 and $3,000. THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTIVES Thankfully, preventive products for both Lyme and heartworm disease are available for purchase by pet owners. Heartworm preventives come as a monthly oral tablet, as a topical liquid, or as an injection that can last between 6 and 12 months. “The goal is to provide consistent prevention during the times of the year when heartworm disease can be transmitted. In most part of the country, this is all year round,” says Dr. Pavlovsky. Mosquito control is also instrumental in preventing heartworm in pets. Vaccination and various flea and tick protective products, such as collars, topical solutions and oral medications are available for protection against Lyme disease. “Lyme disease does not cause problems in the majority of dogs. However, in those that do get ill, the disease can be serious and potentially life threatening,” Dr. Pavlovsky cautions. “Vaccination is safe and effective, preventing illness. Tick control is an extra step in prevention but alone isn’t usually sufficient. Dogs and cats bitten by ticks may be infected with other tick-borne illnesses, so Lyme disease is not the sole concern.” While options such as those listed above are important for preventing illness, they do not guarantee that a pet will never be infected with Lyme or heartworm disease. Annual testing fills that potential gap. THE IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL TESTING “Heartworm prevention products are not 100% effective, and many pet owners do not use prevention or use it irregularly. Screening for heartworm and Lyme disease allows us to identify animals carrying the diseases so we can treat them during the early, more treatable stages of disease,” Dr. Pavlovsky states. Treating infected pets helps to prevent the spread of these diseases to others. Screening also makes it possible to determine whether infections in an area are high or low, which allows veterinarians to evaluate the effectiveness of the prevention strategies being used. Annual testing is especially important in areas where heartworm and Lyme disease are common. Dr. Pavlovsky recommends the Companion Animal Parasite Council website (capcvet.org) as a reliable resource to discover prevalence of these diseases in your area. (Prevalence is defined as the proportion of a population who have a specific condition in a given time period.) To keep pets safe, veterinarians recommend both preventive measures and annual testing to keep heartworm and Lyme disease at bay. THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 1 7 ▬

My first foray into dog sports was agility, which I began with my first Weimaraner, Scout, in 2006. We had a great time, and I quickly became hooked. Around the same time, I was active on the Weimaraner Addict Online Forum, learning from Weimaraner greats like Anne Taguchi. This led me to dream of one day competing in field events. I think my life goal was to get a Junior Hunter title on a dog! I had hunted with Scout, and she had a lot of natural talent but didn’t range more than a hundred yards. I was also an ICU nurse and I worked with some GSP guys that ran in American Field Trials. They hadn’t seen many good Weimaraners and were more than happy to let me know. I convinced myself Scout didn’t have enough range even for a hunt test, so I gave up rather easily on this lofty dream. Fast forward to 2018 when Avy came into my life as my new agility prospect. Of course, at this time, I also met Judy Owen and Shirley Nilsson, Avy’s breeders, and became introduced to other members of the Trax crew. When Avy was 10 months old, she saw her first game birds—wild pheasants. She heartily chased them around the countryside, and she was so happy. I had no idea how bird-crazy she was! Avy is descended from some very talented field trial dogs, so it shouldn’t have been surprising. A couple of months later, I finally entered my first Junior Hunt Test! Avy ran okay in her first brace but didn’t find any birds. I watched other Trax dogs Bailey and Brava run and couldn’t believe their range. Much to my surprise, in her second brace, Avy also ran huge! She found birds and pointed with incredible style. I received some great feedback from the judges and from Shirley, and I decided to enter a Field Trial Puppy Stake in Kennewick, Washington. When I saw that the puppy stake had English Pointers, Brittanys, GWPs, and Setters, I figured we didn’t By Stacie Roberts THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 18 ▬

have a chance but were determined to have fun. Well, Avy won the puppy stake and her first two FC points. Needless to say I was hooked! She proceeded to have a hearty derby career, catching many birds. It took a lot of work, but with Shirley’s help and a summer at Todd Yamamoto’s camp in the White Mountains of Arizona, Avy was ready for her broke dog career. Although I really enjoy agility, the competitive nature of field trials appealed to me. Where agility was something that Avy did for me, field work came so natural . It was so fun to watch her work, and we had a lot of success. Coupling that with a fantastic mentor (Shirley), a general love of the outdoors, and the chance to ride horses and watch field dogs in action made field trialing my new favorite thing! I had no idea how much hard work, traveling, and literal blood, sweat, and tears would be involved. However, having such a great dog to get me started in the sport really made it rewarding. As most people know, the sport of field trialing is currently facing many challenges. Most people getting into the sport now can’t afford horses, let alone the property, trucks, and trailers needed for them. Walking trials are a great option, but I routinely drive 10 hours to find one. I have been able to enter some horseback trials, borrowing or renting a horse or just walking. Other challenges include difficulty finding judges, horses for bird planting, and manpower to run field trials. To me, the most valuable tool in getting new people involved in field trialing is a solid mentor. Having that support is crucial. Besides offering advice in training and handling, a mentor can help the person know what stakes to enter, introduce them to people at trials, encourage them when things don’t go great, and be excited for them when they do. Just having this kind of friendship makes it so much easier to get started. For most of the last six years of trialing, I have been the one on the receiving end of that mentorship. Now that I have some experience, I am trying to pay it forward, whether to puppy people, other Weimaraner enthusiasts, or anyone showing interest. Thanks to everyone who has shown me friendship in the sport, and thank you for passing that same camaraderie on to other newer handlers. It is also important for new people to step up and help clubs put on these trials. Volunteering to help at any trial is very important and appreciated, and you can learn a lot while you are at it. Even as a newer person in the sport, I have seen firsthand how impressive a truly gifted Weimaraner is in the field. I believe it is so important to keep this talent alive in our breed. Weimaraners are great in Sports like tracking, agility, and obedience. Conformation is also important as a structurally sound Weimaraner is able to perform its job best. I have competed in all of these sports and enjoy them and believe they are all very good ways to show the versatility of our breed. I also believe that we can thank Field Work for creating the need for such an athletic intelligent dog. Field trials are so important to really bring out the best in Weimaraners. I am also really excited about the regional championships we have now because a Weimaraner that is competitive in hour stakes is even more special. It is so important to preserve field talent in our breed and I am happy to be joining other breeders who have been doing this for many years. I also currently have a couple of young trial prospects getting started and look forward to seeing everyone out there again this year! THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 19 ▬

The 2024 Weimaraner Club of America National Field Championships and Field Futurity was about tradition. This was the 75th running of the National Open Championship. Once again the event was held in the first full week of December, commencing this year on December 7th. And as has been the case since 1968, we held the event at the field trial grounds at Lake Murray State Park near Ardmore, Oklahoma. We have a new National Open Grand Champion, Robber, and a second time National Grand Amateur Champion, Indy. Robber has been competitive for a couple of years, with several previous placements at Nationals and wins at Regional Classics, before breaking through this year. But Robber’s win continues a bit of a tradition since his grandsire, Saga, won the 50th National Open Championship. Indy has now solidified his stellar reputation with two National Amateur titles to go along with his 2021 National Open title and 2023 National Walking Championship. This year we continued our tradition of attracting accomplished field trial judges. The panel for the Open Championship/Open Walking Puppy/Field Futurity was Ken Chenowith and Cliff Mesnard. The panel for the Amateur Championship and Open Derby was Kevin Donahue and Bob Thompson. And Terry Zygalinski, our wrangler for the event, also served as our Judges Marshall for the Open Championship. We thank all of these experts for giving us their time and the benefit of their experienced eyes. We also recognize the tradition of the professional handlers that have competed so well in our National events over the years. This year we were pleased to see Tim Hidalgo again, and welcome two new pros—Ryan Johnson and Travis Schuler. But once again, Diane Vater prevailed, winning her record 16th National Open Championship, surpassing the record she tied just last year with Bird Dog Hall of Fame Weimaraner trainer, the late Tom Hansen. Our thanks to Diane for her dedication to the sport and her continued demonstration of excellence. As is always the case, our event benefited from a large cast of volunteers, some veterans and some newcomers. Once again, the glue that held it all together was our Field Trial Secretary, Esteri Hinman. Our NFT Committee of John Bonner, Kim Fowler, Chip Glennon, Carey Killion and April Mallon worked through the year planning for this event and pulling it together. Each of them contributed in too many ways to list here, but they all displayed teamwork and generosity. (But one of them does deserve a special shout-out. Once again, April designed our 2024 logo, which appears prominently on our trophies as well as our merchandise.) Once the trial commenced, we benefited from the ‘can do’ spirit of a lot of people that simply stepped in and got the work done. A new person stepped in and helped to keep us fed—Shonagh McVean led a small and changing cast of volunteers and produced hearty breakfasts and lunches through the week, often doing magical things with leftovers! As has been the case for several years now, Kory McGaughy was selfless as the bird planter. But when work called Kory away after the first half of the event, a new volunteer, Mindy Brown, stepped in and took the wheel of the ATV. And speaking of taking the wheel, Anna Doornink displayed true volunteer spirit driving our dog wagon: she does not own a Weimaraner, but she spent the week at our event more than capably playing this crucial role. Frequent passengers on this year’s dog wagon included J.R. Mallon and Michael Stahl who not only pitched in handling dogs but who also documented much of the action in pictures. Anna learned her dog-wagon driving skills from her friend (and Weimaraner owner) Steph Meyer. Steph so capably piloted the dog for many years that she was honored with the 2024 Charlie Williams award. While Steph was not on site with us this year, she accepted her award by Zoom call at the banquet. And despite the tremendous efforts of the people that volunteer to put on an event like this, we also need financial support. We would like to thank the sponsors and donors that contributed to this year’s event: Purina, Dogs Unlimited, Gun Dog Supply, DSG Outerwear for Women, Haggis Saddlery, Ruffland Kennels, and The Saddle Guy. The San Antonio Weimaraner Club sponsored the belt buckles for the winners of the Open and Amateur Championships, and the Weimaraner Club of the Washington DC Area sponsored a dinner for all attendees, We would also like to thank the many generous donors of raffle items, and those of you who purchased raffle tickets of all kinds. Finally, we would like to thank everyone that took the time and made the effort to come to Ardmore, some from great distances, whether it was to run a dog, volunteer, or support those in attendance. Many people have been coming to this event every year for years. But this year it seemed like we had a greater number of people in camp for the whole event. Let’s keep this tradition going. THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 27 ▬

The Lone Star Weimaraner Club and the Weimaraner Club of America proudly kicked off the 75th running of the WCA National Field Trial with back-to-back conformation events. Held at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, OK, this celebration brought together Weimaraner enthusiasts from across the country, showcasing both the beauty and field capabilities of these magnificent dogs. Members of the Lone Star Weimaraner Club arrived early to set up the venue for the shows and the Dual Welcome Party, sponsored by Purina. Once again entries were up, with dogs and their owners traveling from far and wide to compete, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy the versatility of our breed. The WCA Sweeps and Juniors were expertly judged by Ms. Anna Vaughn, followed by the regular classes under the esteemed Mr. James Fehring. Ensuring the smooth running of the event, WCA Vice-President Barb Shepard served as the on-site Secretary, ably assisted by Member Pat Gannon and Secretary Vickie Margolis, who organized the exhibitors and supported the judges as Ring Stewards. In honor of the WCA’s 75th running of the National Field Trial, Purina sponsored a fantastic Welcome Party. Attendees enjoyed a delightful meal and a spirited Calcutta with a unique blend of show and field Weimaraner enthusiasts in a festive atmosphere charged with excitement, fun, and togetherness. THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 35 ▬

This year for the AKC Meet the Breeds event held January 25th and 26th at the Jacob Javits Center, our booth focus was all about our motto, “Weims Just Wanna Have Fun!” We decided to showcase all of the venues our beloved breed can learn, excel at and compete in all while educating the public en masse about the importance of purposeful, ethical breeding. Our committee appointed a Booth Coordinator and reached out on social media to and via email / during club meetings to the local-ish to NYC clubs for Weim owners who would like to be a part of this HUGE event and help the WCA showcase purebred weims. Big Thanks to Kenan Young from Massachusetts, Jen Pryor from New Jersey, as well as to local rescue leader (and my partner in Weim) Susan MacDonald for all their hard work both days with me speaking to countless people! Both Kenan and I also had invited previous (rescue adopter/puppy people) to stop by and they, too, shared their own personal Weim experiences with the public. We had beautiful displays sent up north from Pub Ed committee member, Susan Wallace including her Tri Athlete Rosettefrom a previous National, a photo flip book of various title certificates earned and personal photos of all the “things” one can choose to do with a Weim. We had tons of personal photos, historical books, awards, and on loan, a lovely digital frame carefully put together with photos from GSWC board members, Michelle Ostrander, Lauri Austin, Jen Pryor, and myself added to the booth. Taking a lesson from Jennifer Martin in “less can be more for elegance”, we added in a weim statue, a pop-up banner with photos of dockdiving, Fast CAT’ing and hunting, copies of the WCA magazine with WJWHF articles…. BUT the ABSOLUTE draw to our booth and STARS of the weekend were our Weim-bassadors, Chocolate with Kenan on Saturday and Mikki with me both Saturday and Sunday. (Violet came in season early Sunday morning, so Mikki flew solo the second day.) While we spoke to THOUSANDS of people each day, these rockstars exhibited their amazing solid temperaments and entertained kids of all ages with their tricks and our stories. One visitor came with a “blinged out” Wegman Weim on her shirt, explaining she specifically came to our booth to show us and to tell us that her mom had Weims growing up and she felt that they were her spirit animal! PUBLIC EDUCATION COMMITTEE Submitted By KellyAnn Kwiatek The Public Educations Committee Takes Manhattan! “...this event is a big undertaking to coordinate, it is the BEST OPPORTUNITY to really explain our passion.” THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 3 6 ▬

We were thrilled to take her photo with Mikki, who was also blinged out! We encouraged so many to step into our booth and chat while petting our Weims and gently approached several people in wheelchairs or with crutches /canes. Handling this type of excitement, commotion and stimulation isn’t always easy for some dogs, but ours not only took it all in stride, Mikki earned her AKC CGCU title demonstrating grace under pressure and passing each of the 10 Urban CGC test criteria! We showed everyone who stopped by to see the “Wegman/ Sesame Street Dogs” that they can be more than just a pretty show dog! They can also be an amazing hunting partner, super-fast “CAT”, a personal trainer (take them for a daily jog/hike, a mermaid (can’t keep mine out of the water!), therapy dogs, or a “grayt” addition to the family while also explaining that these sporting dogs tend to have a higher energy level than most and may NOT be the breed for everyone. Although this event is a big undertaking to coordinate, it is the BEST OPPORTUNITY to really explain our passion for preserving our versatile breed and it should not be skipped! So many other breed clubs had quite a few volunteers and dogs each day from ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. Next year, we aim to have even more amazing Weimbassadors spreading the word and spending a day or two in the “big city” … won’t YOU consider joining us? We look forward to continuing our mission of public education at more venues where we can show everyone that ... Weims Just Wanna Have Fun! THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 37 ▬

I am also a rally judge so I can tell you the tricks to get better scores. I have put two RACH titles on my girls as well as OTCH with Ocean. Summer, my 1st Novice A dog, did not start formal obedience until she was 2 so any dog can do it. Let me help you get started or help continue your training. Send me a message or email me at: [email protected]. Hope to hear from you or see you very soon in Obedience! Janet Valentovich WCA Breeder Referral Program A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service. A few things you might like to know about this service. I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies. The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and some have also done a little research on the breed. The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup, though I encourage them to consider greater distances. The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder. If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for any local clubs nearby as well. This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed on the list. Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed! Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state, email and phone number. Please send this information to: [email protected] Thank you, and best of luck with your litters! Billie Thompson • WCA Breeder Referral THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ MARCH 2025 ▬ 40 ▬
