WCA Breeder Referral Expecting Puppies? by Billie Thompson A new litter of puppies fills us with excitement, hopes and dreams. It’s a perfect time to take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service. A few things you might like to know about this service. • I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies. • The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and some have also done a little research on the breed. • The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup, though I encourage them to consider greater distances. • The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder. • If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for any local clubs nearby as well. This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed on the list. Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed! Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state, email and phone number. Please send this information to [email protected]. Thank you, and best of luck with your litters! Billie Thompson WCA Breeder Referral • [email protected] 4

At 6 years of age Graf has 23 placements on the board to include the MAC Open Gun Dog champion 2019, MAC Grand Open Limited All Age champion 2021, MAC Amateur Gun Dog Champion and 3 placements at the Weimaraner Club of America National Championships. As well as AKC Graf won the American Field, Weimaraner Championship in 2020 and Runner up in 2021 and Champion again in 2022. Graf is big running dog that loves to show to the front after giant moves. He is easy to handle on course whether on foot or on horseback. He has extremely high prey drive and the only dog I have known who killed a Porcupine. He is a phenomenal retriever on water and land. On top of all of that he is a great hunting companion on upland game. Graf is also the Sire to the 2022 WCA Open Champion MAGA. Keeping and improving this miracle line we also own a daughter and a grandson from Graf. 6

He has intensity on point and is mannerly. He looks as good when honoring a bracemate as he does on point. He is well on his way to earning his AFC and will continue to work on GFC points as well. At home, he loves to ride in the truck, swim in the pool during the summer or lay by our wood burning stove or fireplace in the winter. His first litter was born in March of this year. Wanted to let everyone know the board voted to change the late fee for futurity nominating a litter from $250.00 to $100.00. So, with that in mind I would remind everyone on a few of the due dates for nominating a litter and puppies. A litter can be nominated within 30 days of the whelp date and the fee is $40.00. If you miss the first deadline you can still nominate your litter after the 30 days for additional 30 days. There is a $100.00 late fee for a total of $140.00 for the futurity. The Maturity nomination fee is $20.00 for the first 30 days and $20.00 plus a $10.00 late for the second 30 days. Also do not forget that all owners and co-owners must be members of the Weimaraner Club of America. Puppy nominations are due on or before the last day of the month the puppy turns 4 months old. The individual nomination fee is $30.00. If you miss the first deadline you can still nominate the puppy. You have up to the last day of the month the puppy turns 5 months old. The fee is $30.00 plus $10.00 late fee. Also do not forget that all owners and co-owners must be members of the Weimaraner Club of America. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Delegate Report submitted by Jennifer Martin To the WCA Board of Directors, This past weekend March 12,13,14 I attended the AKC Delegates meeting in New Jersey. I attended the committee meetings on Monday in advance of the official Delegate “voting” meeting on Tuesday. I was assigned a mentor, Chris Sweetwood, an AKC Board of Director. His advice and knowledge was/is deeply appreciated. The Parent Club, All Breed Clubs, Canine Health, and Dog Show Rules, Bylaws and Delegate Advocacy & Advancement committees were well attended. Companion Events, Field Trial and Hunt Test Events, and Herding, Earth Dog, Coursing and Scent Work Events had very low attendance. On Tuesday at 7:30 am, I attended the Legislative Meeting hosted by Sheila Goff, VP Government Relations. This meeting was well attended and described the “extremely disturbing” (her words) about the current legislation happening around the country. All committees addressed the growing issue of legislation as it relates to the AKC and canine events. The Field Trial & Hunt Test committee was focused on ways to increase participation. Canine Health mostly focused on the “Canine Semen Preservation Bank” outlining some of the legal issues. A small discussion regarding brachiocephalic breeds and future testing. Only a few Dog Show Rules were officially voted on along with nominees for new BOD on Tuesday. I spoke with each nominee personally on Sunday/Monday and there were NO rule changes per se, instead changes in verbiage to be “more inclusive”. On Tuesday at 7:30 am in advance of the Delegate meeting, I attended the Legislative Meeting hosted by Sheila Goff, VP Government Relations. This meeting described the extremely disturbing (her words) about the current legislation 11

happening around the country. As I become more familiar with each committee and their Chairs, this report will have more information. I was proud to hear MANY comments regarding Judy Colan and her long tenure as the WCA delegate. She is very respected and missed by all in the Delegate body! Committee Reports: Nominating Committee: Sarah Chvilicek reported there has been no response from the membership willing to serve on the Nominating Committee. She has asked Shirley Nilsson and Esteri Hinman to serve and they have confirmed they will serve on the committee. Sarah will ask the Executive Secretary to send out another email blast requesting the membership to serve on the Nominating Committee. Health Committee submitted by Debra Konkol Activity Summary: Continue to coordinate the Donor Inspired Study for Wobblers and Cervical Instability through the Morris Animal Foundation and partnering with the Doberman Club of America. The Morris Animal Foundation has agreed to match all funding for the initial study of this project in hopes of fitting it into the fiscal year 2024 Request for Proposal calendar. A Research fund request has been submitted to the Weimaraner Foundation Fund (WFF). Planned Activities: All research donation funds from private individual WCA and DCA members will be accepted and applied to the Donor Inspired Study for Wobblers and Cervical Instability. Research donation funds for the initial Donor Inspired Study will need to be committed prior to June 2023. Motion made by Vickie Margolis to donate $10,000 from the WCA to the Study for Wobblers and Cervical Instability through the Morris Animal Foundation and partnering with the Doberman Club of America. 2nd by Jill Paige. Motion passed. Legislative Committee submitted by Christine Boldrick Activity Summary: Most of the states still have legislatures in session and we are monitoring proposed bills and updates from those bills. We also did a legislative round up for the WCA Magazine but I do not think it is effective in that by the time it is in the magazine, the legislation reported on is stale. We may come up with something different to report with regard to legislation. We have been very active with proposed anti-breeder legislation in Florida. We are very pleased with the WCA members who have jumped on board with contacting the Representatives and Senators opposing this legislation – however, we must keep the pressure up to defeat this. There is also antibreeder legislation in other states that we are monitoring and encouraging members to assist in defeating. The committee will continue to monitor available legislation through AKC and other legislation monitoring groups and encourage members to assist with opposing legislation that affects breeders, etc. Thankfully most sessions will end soon. There has been approximately 80+ pieces of legislation that we have monitored since January 1, 2023. Planned Activities: Continue monitoring legislation in all states related to topics that affect breeding, ownership, licensing, health, etc. We are still monitoring the alerts regarding AR groups attempting to add detrimental legislation to irrelevant bills in an attempt to get around obvious monitoring. In particular, we are monitoring any bills related to banning docking or removal of dewclaws which is a very hot topic at this time. Also, we continue to be on the lookout for any federal legislation that may include limitations regarding animal ownership, importation or other issues. Recommendation: In light of the fact that some members have questions regarding legislation, and that the alerts come from the Executive Secretary, members seem to think that the Executive Secretary has answers for them. I am not sure what the answer would be on this in that my name and email and phone number is at the bottom of each alert – I just recommend that the BOD think about 12

any possible solution to this. I am sure the Executive Secretary has been busy enough forwarding the alerts without having to field questions, etc. Field Committee submitted by Mary B. Brown Activity Summary: The field committee has held two meetings this calendar year. Please approve the following members to serve on the committee: Camille Rice, Anne Taguchi, Shirley Nilsson, Rodney Moon, Diane Vater, & Russ Settell. Motion made by Sarah Chvilicek to approve the committee as submitted. 2nd by Frank Sommer. Motion passed. 1. Regional events: The WCWDCA agreed to host the WCA Eastern Classic in Dillwyn, VA at the end of April. The committee explored options for clubs to host the 2023 Western without success. It is reported that west coast clubs are not able to make a commitment to host a 2023 classic. A local club will volunteer to host the field futurity to support breeders who have nominated litters on the west coast. The Board discussed the possibility of a local Weimaraner club hosting a Field Futurity without holding a Classic or a Field Trial as per the Futurity rules. The Board may grant an exception if there is no other option. It would also depend on AKC’s position since this is a non AKC stake and whether or not we would need an event number. The Executive Secretary will look into any AKC restrictions. Questions regarding not being able to hold a Western Field Classic, per the rules The question was asked about the $600 that is given to clubs holding Field Classics. Those funds are set aside for Classics, not a single stake within a Classic. San Antonio is working on dates for MidAmerica that will likely be in November in the same location it was last year. We are waiting on further details from the club & the application. 2. National Bird Dog Hall of Fame The committee is working on nominations for two individuals and two dogs for entry into the National HOF. We plan to have nominations ready by September 2023 to forward to the board for approval. We are working with the HOF to assess the status of our displays. The Browns are in the process of coordinating a visit to the museum to assess needs. This will tentatively occur in the May-June time frame. We have been informed that the video display is not working. It is not clear whether this is due to broken equipment or other problems that may have surfaced during the pandemic when the museum was closed. The committee appreciates the board covering the annual rent, Thank-you!!! 3. Updating results for classics In process of gathering information that is out of date since 2018. 4. Field Seminar or “Introduction to Birds Seminar” at the National. Specialty The committee was not contacted this year which may have been due to the change in venue or a decision to no have such an event embedded in the National Specialty. For future planning the committee would like clarification about what the committee’s role should be. Our experience is that planning for a field seminar or activity works well when the committee working on the show is collaborative, as well as local clubs since resources such as access to grounds, birds, etc. has to be addressed. 5. Increasing Field Futurity participation This topic is complex and controversial. The committee invited two members, who developed suggestions for change in the field futurity regulations to our last meeting. We are summarizing our discussion and will have recommendations based on information gathered. This will involve revisiting the current timeline for nominations, fee structure, as well as other possible changes. Current breeder incentives are not highly valued and does not provide an incentive to nominate litters. If there is not an interest in 13

revising the FF to meet needs of breeders and owners, we will continue to have limited participation and/or a possible decline in future nominations. If the WCA moves to one FF at Nationals, we are likely to see a decrease in nominations by breeders on the west/east coast who do not attend Nationals. Club members can reach out to the FC committee members to provide input on the field futurity. Planned Activities: 1. Confirm which local western club will host the Western FF embedded in a local trial and date 2. Confirm application by San Antonio to host a Mid-America in 2023 3. Update results of regional classics 4. Visit to National Bird Dog Hall of Fame to assess exhibit and identify needs, if any. 5. Complete Bird Dog Museum Hall of Fame nominations and remind membership of criteria. Nominations can be made by all members. The burden for nominations has been on the F.C. to research and complete nominations. Place article in WCA magazine to remind/educate the membership about the criteria for the HOF 6. Summarize recommendations to be considered re: change to the Field Futurity Recommendation: Request at least one WCA Zoom account be set up for committee work. The Board discussed the possibility of opening Zoom accounts. Possibly 1 for Board use, and 1 for committees to share. Vickie Margolis & Sarah Chvilicek will look into Zoom subscription possibilities. Communications Committee submitted by Bonnie Hill As of this date, this is a committee of one. If The Magazine is to have more content, it will need to be provided to the editor. The Weimaraner Magazine continues to request submissions from committee chairs. Monthly reminders are sent, with replies on a regular basis from the same 3 or 4 committee chairs. It is embarrassing and a waste to pay to produce a publication with dated stats and no backing form it’s members. Liaisons Sarah Chvilicek, Frank Sommer & Editor Bonnie Hill will meet to set up a committee. Public Education Submitted by: SaraRenee Activity Summary: Initial, and individualized outreach efforts seeking out club members to join the Public Education committee have been a slow go and have not garnered much interest. Most contacted state they are not interested and do not have time, whereas some members stated they do not feel comfortable with the idea of “giving back” to the WCA or they’ve been burned in the past and are not keen to give their time promoting a group they are on the fence about. So, I’ve decided to create a callout poster that can be sent to the entire membership, as well as be posted on Facebook and shared to help garner interest. The poster is also an invite to be included in an upcoming Zoom meeting (April 17th @ 8pm EST) to learn more about the PubEd committee, what it looks like, and goals. Planned Activities: April callout meeting to members that would be interested in joining the PubEd meeting. From this meeting, monthly meetings would be set, as well as strategic plan/goals for rest of year. Delegation of planning/goals/articles/etc. Old Business • PayPal Account – John has contacted PayPal again. The only way to change the admin on this account is to close the account and open a new one under the WCA. We will need to wait until there is a lull in payment activities. • Update Signers on Bank Accounts – A resolution from the Board is needed to add or remove a person from any account, and will require new signature cards to be sent to all signers. 14

• Financials need to be sent to the membership Robbe will do this at the end of the fiscal year. • Magazine Cover – Sarah and Frank will readdress the questions the board had. • F/M trophies- Greg Dielman will ship trophies 2 weeks prior to the date of the event, and will confirm via email with the recipient they will be at the address. He will also make some adjustments in the manor the trophies are shipped to reduce risk of breakage. • Western Field Futurity Trophy – In accordance with the By-laws and Roberts Rules of Order a letter will be sent notifying Kim Burnell-Fowler of a hearing date set for May 24, 2023 at 6:00pm Mountain Time. There being no further business Motion made by Vickie Margolis to adjourn. 2nd by Billie Thompson. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 MT. Respectively Submitted, Vickie Margolis WCA Secretary Special Board Hearing of the Weimaraner Club of America Wednesday May 24, 2023. 8:00pm Eastern Time, 7:00pm Central Time, 6:00pm Mountain Time, 5:00pm Pacific Time President John Bonner called the meeting to order at 6:01 MT. In attendance: President John Bonner, Vice President Sarah Chvilicek, Secretary Vickie Margolis, Treasurer Robbe McAlexander, Directors: Frank Sommer, Julie Aune, Billie Thompson, Suzanne Honeyman, & Wayne Cowles. AKC Delegate Jennifer Martin. Absent Director Jill Paige. John brought everyone up to date: In November of 2020 Ms. Kim BurnellFowler acknowledged the Western Field Futurity trophy went missing while in her custody. A replacement trophy was commissioned by the Board and the invoice for the replacement trophy and case was sent to Ms. Burnell-Fowler. After several attempts to collect were made and payment promised, the Board set a hearing date. On April 14, 2023 a formal notice of the hearing was set for May 24, 2024 and was sent to and acknowledged by Ms. Kim BurnellFowler. Ms. Burnell-Fowler elected not to attend the meeting. Motion made by Vickie Margolis. That, in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order and the Weimaraner Club of America bylaws, Ms. Kim Burnell-Fowler be suspended from all benefits and privileges of the Weimaraner Club of America (WCA) due her failure to remit payment for the replacement cost invoice presented to her for the Western Field Futurity Trophy and case lost while in her care. This suspension shall remain in effect until Ms. Burnell-Fowler is either brought before the membership for expulsion at the annual meeting as outlined in ARTICLE IV of the bylaws, or until she fulfills the following conditions: (1) payment of the outstanding invoice, (2) submission of a petition for reinstatement to the WCA Board of Directors, and (3) WCA Board of Directors approves reinstatement. 2nd by Julie Aune Motion passed. Motion made by Frank Sommer to adjourn. 2nd by Julie Aune. Meeting adjourned at 6:27pm MT. Respectfully submitted, Vickie Margolis WCA Secretary 15

HEALTH Every year the reports of diagnosed tickborne illness increase in number and geographgic location. It is important to understand that tick-borne illness is more than just Lyme, Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Just recently a case of Heartland virus was diagnosed in the midwest. As dog owners and more importantly as competitors that travel the country, it is crucial to remember that ticks can be transported on untreated dogs to areas of the country where they are not normally seen. Not only can this delay an accurate diagnosis for an individual dog or person, but also greatly contributes to the spread of the disease across the US. In fact, this is exactly why Heartworm disease in dogs is now reported in all 50 states. In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, thousands of dogs were relocated / “rescued” to all other 49 states. Many of these dogs were already heartworm positive or unfortunately missed multiple doses of monthly heartworm preventative during the relocation efforts. Once these dogs were in their new environments, Heartworm disease began to spread by the very first mosquito bite of an infected dog. As the warmer weather approaches it is a good idea to review the information below and be tick savvy ! Diseases Transmitted by Ticks In the United States, some ticks carry pathogens that can cause human disease, including: • Anaplasmosis is transmitted to humans by tick bites primarily from the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in the northeastern and upper midwestern U.S. and the western blacklegged tick (Ixodes pacificus) along the Pacific coast. • Babesiosis is caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells. Most human cases of babesiosis in the U.S. are caused by Babesia microti. Babesia microti is transmitted by the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and is found primarily in the northeast and upper midwest. • Borrelia mayonii infection has recently been described as a cause of illness in the upper midwestern United States. It has been found in blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Borrelia mayonii is a new species and is the only species besides B. burgdorferi known to cause Lyme disease in North America. • Borrelia miyamotoi infection has recently been described as a cause of illness in the U.S. It is transmitted by the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and has a range similar to that of Lyme disease. • Bourbon virus infection has been identified in a limited number patients in the Midwest and southern United States. At this time, we do not know if the virus might be found in other areas of the United States. Tick Borne Disease - is more than just Lyme Submitted on behalf of the WCA Health Committee 16

• Colorado tick fever is caused by a virus transmitted by the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni). It occurs in the the Rocky Mountain states at elevations of 4,000 to 10,500 feet. • Ehrlichiosis is transmitted to humans by the lone star tick (Ambylomma americanum), found primarily in the southcentral and eastern U.S. • Heartland virus cases have been identified in the Midwestern and southern United States. Studies suggest that Lone Star ticks can transmit the virus. It is unknown if the virus may be found in other areas of the U.S. • Lyme disease is transmitted by the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in the northeastern U.S. and upper midwestern U.S. and the western blacklegged tick (Ixodes pacificus) along the Pacific coast. • Powassan disease is transmitted by the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and the groundhog tick (Ixodes cookei). Cases have been reported primarily from northeastern states and the Great Lakes region. • Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis is transmitted to humans by the Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum). • Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is transmitted by the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni), and the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sangunineus) in the U.S. The brown dog tick and other tick species are associated with RMSF in Central and South America. • STARI (Southern tick-associated rash illness) is transmitted via bites from the lone star tick (Ambylomma americanum), found in the southeastern and eastern U.S. • Tickborne relapsing fever (TBRF) is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected soft ticks. TBRF has been reported in 15 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming and is associated with sleeping in rustic cabins and vacation homes. • Tularemia is transmitted to humans by the dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), the wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni), and the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum). Tularemia occurs throughout the U.S. • 364D rickettsiosis (Rickettsia phillipi, proposed) is transmitted to humans by the Pacific Coast tick (Dermacentor occidentalis ticks). This is a new disease that has been found in California. TICK IDENTIFICATION BLACKLEGGED TICK Ixodes scapularis WHERE FOUND Widely distributed across the eastern United States. TRANSMITS Borrelia burgdorferi and B. mayonii (which cause Lyme disease), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (anaplasmosis), B. miyamotoi disease (a form of relapsing fever), Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis (ehrlichiosis), Babesia microti (babesiosis), and Powassan virus (Powassan virus disease). COMMENTS The greatest risk of being bitten exists in the spring, summer, and fall in the Northeast, Upper Midwest and mid-Atlantic. However, adult ticks may be out searching for a host any time winter temperatures are above freezing. All life stages bite humans, but nymphs and adult females are most commonly found on people. 17

LONE STAR TICK Amblyomma americanum WHERE FOUND Widely distributed in the eastern United States, but more common in the South. TRANSMITS Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. ewingii (which cause human ehrlichiosis), Francisella tularensis (tularemia), Heartland virus (Heartland virus disease), Bourbon virus (Bourbon virus disease), and Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). COMMENTS The greatest risk of being bitten exists in early spring through late fall. A very aggressive tick that bites humans. The adult female is distinguished by a white dot or “lone star” on her back. The nymph and adult females most frequently bite humans. Growing evidence suggests that alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) may be triggered by the bite of lone star ticks; however, other tick species have n o t been ruled out. AMERICAN DOG TICK Dermacentor variabilis, D. similis WHERE FOUND D. variabilis is widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains. Newly described D. similis is found west of the Rocky Mountains. More research is needed to understand the role of these species in disease transmission. TRANSMITS Francisella tularensis (tularemia) and Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain spotted fever). COMMENTS The greatest risk of being bitten occurs during spring and summer. Adult females are most likely to bite humans. BROWN DOG TICK Rhipicephalus sanguineus WHERE FOUND Worldwide. TRANSMITS Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain spotted fever). Primary vector for R. rickettsii transmission in the southwestern United States and along the U.S.-Mexico border. COMMENTS Dogs are the primary host for the brown dog tick in each of its life stages, but the tick may also bite humans or other mammals. GROUNDHOG TICK Ixodes cookei WHERE FOUND Throughout the eastern half of the United States. T R A N S M I T S Powassan virus (Powassan virus disease). COMMENTS Also called woodchuck ticks. All life stages feed on a variety of warm-blooded animals, including groundhogs, skunks, squirrels, raccoons, foxes, weasels, and occasionally people and domestic animals. Photo courtesy of Steve Jacobs, PSU Entomology GULF COAST TICK Amblyomma maculatum WHERE FOUND Distributed primarily in the southeastern United States, with focal populations in the northeastern, midwestern, and southeastern United States. TRANSMITS R. parkeri (R. parkeri rickettsiosis), a form of spotted fever. 18

COMMENTS Larvae and nymphs feed on birds and small rodents, while adult ticks feed on deer and other wildlife. Adult ticks have been associated with transmission of R. parkeri to humans. ROCKY MOUNTAIN WOOD TICK Dermacentor andersoni WHERE FOUND Rocky Mountain states. T R A N S M I T S Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain spotted fever), Colorado tick fever virus (Colorado tick fever), and Francisella tularensis (tularemia). COMMENTS Adult ticks feed primarily on large mammals. Larvae and nymphs feed on small rodents. Adult ticks are primarily associated with pathogen transmission to humans. SOFT TICK Ornithodoros spp. WHERE FOUND Throughout the western half of the United States, including Texas. T R A N S M I T S Borrelia hermsii, B. turicatae (tickborne relapsing fever [TBRF]). C O M M E N T S Humans typically come into contact with soft ticks in rustic cabins. The ticks emerge at night and feed briefly while people are sleeping. Mo s t people are unaware that they have been bitten. In Texas, TBRF may be associated with cave exposure. O. hermsi tick, before and after feeding. Photo taken by Gary Hettrick RML, NIAID. WESTERN BLACKLEGGED TICK Ixodes pacificus WHERE FOUND In the Pacific Coast states. T R A N S M I T S Anaplasma phagocytophilum (anaplasmosis), B. burgdorferi (Lyme disease), and very likely B. miyamotoi (Borrelia miyamotoi disease, a form of relapsing fever). COMMENTS Larvae and nymphs often feed on lizards, birds, and rodents, and adults more commonly feed on deer. Although all life stages bite humans, nymphs and adult females are more often reported on humans. Tick Bite Prevention • Know where to expect ticks. Ticks live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or on animals. Spending time outside walking your dog, camping, gardening, or hunting could bring you in close contact with ticks. Many people get ticks in their own yard or neighborhood. Soft ticks that spread tickborne relapsing fever (TBRF) most often live in caves and rodent-infested rustic cabins. • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5% permethrin. • Treat dogs and cats for ticks as recommended by a veterinarian. • Check for ticks daily, especially under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and on the hairline and scalp. • Shower soon after being outdoors. 19

To the WCA Membership, Just returned from the June 12-13 Delegates meeting held in New Jersey. I attended the Canine Health, Parent Club, Dog Show Rules, All Breed Clubs, Field Trial and Hunt Tests, Dock and Crop, Government Relations and Legislation, and the Coordinating Committee meetings. In advance of this meeting, I started conversation on the Delegates List regarding “off color registrations” by the AKC. This quickly became a hot topic with several Parent Clubs weighing in. Heated discussion in the Parent Club meeting and along with Labrador Club of America, American Bulldog Club and several others, will follow up with Mark Dunn, AKC Executive Vice President Registration Department. Canine Health covered updates on ongoing research and briefly touched on the Purebred Preservation Bank aka “PPB”. On Tuesday, Dr Charles Garvin held an in depth forum with more details about this new endeavor. More information to follow. Parent Club covered many subjects, also voting to forward specialty reserve major to the BOD. Dog Show Rules continue to amend various language in premium lists. Juniors are no longer bound by coownership and are free to show any dog of their choice. The group realignment was determined to be not necessary at this time and will be reviewed in the 4-5 years. A proposal is moving forward for a 3 point major to be awarded at a specialty when the total number of dogs exhibited in either sex equals 1/2 the number required for a 5 point major. This will ONLY be at the discretion of each parent club to offer at various independent specialties and MUST BE applied for when seeking parent club approval for the specialty. This is proposed to support low entry breeds. Dock and Crop updated Doberman Pinscher Club and AKC program to visit veterinary schools to explain importance and reasons for docking and cropping. I would suggest the WFF support this effort with a donation. Field and Hunt tests covered the impending loss of lands and the controversial words “hunting dog”. Lots of conversation about the legislation affecting field trials. The Coordinating Committee meeting is to review ALL the committee meetings and the high points from each. Again, the most riveting of all is the Legislative and Government Relations meeting. To date, the number of “retail rescue” dogs imported last year almost EQUALS the number of REGISTRATIONS. The AKC along with local dog federations across the country have struck down major legislation that affects us ALL. In summation, we all complain about the AKC and what we “think” is their focus. I can share that there are some very positive things happening and the support of the fancy is needed! JM AKC Delegete Update Jennifer Martin 22

The Weimaraner Club of the Washington DC Area held the 2023 Eastern Field Classic in Dillwyn, VA on Slate River Farm beginning Tuesday April 25 and concluding Thursday April 28, 2023, with a water test. The weather was reasonable for the time of year. Rain held off until Friday which only impacted those of us cleaning and packing up following the trial. The event had 59 entries and was our largest entry at a regional classic in recent years due to a solid juvenile entry. We had three fantastic judges: Mark Calder, Melissa Thomas, and Andrew Campbell. Each judge stepped in to cover additional assignments when one of our judges could not attend at the last minute. Joe Petroski was able to judge the non-regular Field Futurity stake. Our judges were amazing with not just covering multiple stakes but doing so in a friendly, positive manner. We had new people attending, for some this was their first field trial experience and others handled their dogs off horseback for the first time. The committee had very positive feedback from individuals participating on how helpful and supportive the judges were to them. Judges provided coaching as needed on and off the course. One of our judges noted “You have new and young people here running their dogs! This is great! You have more new faces than I have seen at other all-breed trials all year. Keep up the good work!” We were very fortunate to have handlers from Florida, North and South Carolina, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania as well as Virginia. It was also very exciting to see a face familiar from the past. Mark Beaven and his daughter, Julia, who came from Ontario, Canada to run their Futurity dog, Nellie. We hope to see everyone back next year and can’t wait to see how dogs running this year progress. A special thanks to professionals Diane Vater, Chuck Cooper, and Andrew Campbell for their support. Becky Fockler helped organize the trial, arranged judges and supplies for the event. She was not able to attend the trial in person due to having a litter of pups on the ground. Our small committee which consisted of Joe Petroski, Jeff Brown, Danny Gooch, and Meredith Wadsworth covered on-site work. Danny Gooch managed bird planting throughout the trial and served as Captain of guns. Randi Kohl and Calvin Boersma deserve a hearty “Thank-You” for all their help during the event. Calvin helped with bird planting and the dog wagon. Randi helped with picking up breakfast items daily, setting up lunches and line marshalling. Each were ready to help with any task needed! We appreciate you! Horses for rent this year were outstanding and provided by Mark Calder. A special thanks to Purina for being a sponsor for the event! 2023 WCA EASTERN FIELD CLASSIC & FIELD FUTURITY HOSTED BY THE WEIMARANER CLUB OF THE WASHINGTON DC AREA April 25-28, 2023 Joe Petroski & Becky Fockler, FT Co-Chairs and Mary Brown, FT Secretary 28

Ashbrooke's Joy of Violet Gray (GCH The Delaware Valley Weimaraner Club held sweepstakes and specialties the weekend of 4/29 and 4/30 in conjunction with the Wilmington and Penn Treaty Kennel Clubs’ allbreed shows at Lums Pond State Park, Bear, DE. We’ve enjoyed holding our specialties at this lovely campground location for quite a few years. It’s always a guess what the weather will be for this first outdoor weekend and this time was certainly challenging. Despite being damp and drizzly on Saturday, the rain held off and we were able to hold the sweepstakes and regular classes. Unfortunately, Sunday was a different story. Rain came down in buckets, further saturating the ground that was already soggy, causing the show to be cancelled immediately after completion of our sweepstakes. Saturday’s Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes were judged by Ms. Libby Naimo and Dr. Eric Liebes presided over the impressive Regular and Best of Breed classes. Sunday’s sweepstakes judge Ms. Elizabeth Greenfield was able to hand out puppy and veteran ribbons just in the nick of time before things were shut down. In typical dog show fashion, though, judges, dogs and exhibitors were all good sports, took things in stride and made the best of an unfortunate situation. Melissa Hampton once again did a great job as trophy chair and created a lovely raffle basket, the lucky winner of which was Roseann McLaughlin. Congratulations to all ribbon recipients, winners, and new title earners! Thanks to DVWC members and all the exhibitors who contributed to the success of the shows despite the inclement weather. Looking forward to seeing everyone in September for our Fall Sweepstakes and Specialty to be held in conjunction with the Westchester Kennel Club show in Bridgewater NJ. Let’s all hope for nice weather! 39

How to Keep Your Dog Cool in Extreme Heat Without Air Conditioning By Jan Reisen | Used with Permission akc.org The summer heat can be stifling for both dogs and humans. And when we lose power, it is not only stressful on our own bodies but on our dogs’ as well. There are a few steps you can take to keep your dog (and you!) safe and cool in extreme heat. Most Dogs Aren’t Built for Heat Most breeds are built to conserve rather than dissipate heat. They don’t have sweat glands, and most of their body is wrapped in fur with little or no exposed skin. As a result, they lose heat through the pads of their feet and through their mouths by panting. While sunscreen is important for all dogs, some breeds need special consideration when it comes to the sun. For example, white or fine-coated breeds, like Bull Terriers and Greyhounds, are especially vulnerable to sunburn, while the black coats of dogs like the Schipperke absorb heat, adding to the danger of overheating and heatstroke. Keep Water Available • Let your dog drink as much water as possible • If you have a working freezer, make cold treats, like frozen chew toys or dog-safe ice pops How to Help a Dog Cool Down Along with plenty of cool water, the most important thing to do to keep a dog cool is to stay indoors or in the shade. If your air conditioning turns off on an extra-hot day (and you can’t get it back on), go to the coolest area of the house you can, such as the basement. If possible, stay at a friend’s house until your air conditioning is restored. There are other ways you can relieve your dog from the heat by having dog cooling supplies on hand in advance, such as: • Battery-operated fan • Cool cloths made of chamois, like those used to dry cars at a car wash. If this happens at a dog show, put a moist chamois on your dog’s back without getting them too wet, take it off, and present them to the judge, who probably will only feel a tiny bit of dampness when going over the dog. If you keep your cool cloth in a cooler, don’t put it directly into the ice. You don’t want to put anything ice-cold onto a dog, because that shrinks the blood vessels and actually generates more internal heat. • Cooling vest, which deflects the heat and cools the dog through evaporation • Cooling crate pad or a cold, wet towel that you can spread out for your dog to lie on. You can also have them stand on a damp towel to help their paw pads release heat. • Rubbing alcohol, which you can dab behind your dog’s ears, on their stomach, or on their paws. Rubbing alcohol cools faster than water and can draw out heat. 44

• Spray bottle filled with cool water. Spray the underside of their body that’s not exposed to the hot sun (such as the groin area, where the hair is less dense), the bottoms of their feet, and inside their mouth. • Rectal thermometer with lubricant. Your dog’s temperature shouldn’t rise above 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the high end of normal. • Unflavored pediatric electrolyte solution for the dog to drink if they get dehydrated Signs of Heatstroke In spite of your best efforts, your dog could develop heatstroke. Here are the symptoms: • Unusual breathing (rapid and loud) • High rectal temperature (103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) • Extreme thirst • Weakness and/or fatigue • Frequent vomiting • Disorientation • Dark or bright red tongue and gums • Skin around the muzzle or neck doesn’t snap back when pinched (dehydration) • Difficulty breathing • Thick saliva • Rapid heartbeat • Heavy drooling • Agitation If you suspect that your dog is overheated, immediately take them to a cooler area or to the vet. Once in a cool room, separate their fur with your fingers so the cool air can penetrate the skin. To cool your dog down as quickly as possible, pour cool water over their head and body, gently hose a very gentle stream of cool water over them, or, where possible, submerge them in a tub of cool water. Even if your dog seems stable, it’s a good idea to take them to the nearest vet for evaluation and treatment if necessary. Stay Cool This Summer 45
