ASDCA CODE OF ETHICS ANATOLIAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB OF AMERICA Approved 8-11-2021 by BOD The Anatolian Shepherd is a very special breed of dog, developed over many centuries under rigorous working conditions to perform a specific job – protect livestock. As owners and breeders of these dogs, we are dedicated to maintaining the working ability, temperament, soundness, and overall conformation these dogs have exhibited for millennia in their native lands. This Code of Ethics is established in accordance with the objectives of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America (ASDCA) as set forth in the By-Laws. It is established to set a standard of conduct by all members of the ASDCA. It is presented as a guideline for the use of ASDCA members and the general public when buying breeding, selling and exhibiting Anatolian Shepherd Dogs. The Code of Ethics outlines the essentials of responsible behaviors for Anatolian Shepherd owners, breeders, and potential breeders whose foremost aim should be the health and welfare of their dogs and the breed. As a member, breeder, or potential breeder, in good standing of the ASDCA, I hereby agree: 1. To abide by the ASDCA By-laws and the Rules and Regulations of the American Kennel Club. 2. To maintain the highest standard of canine health, cleanliness, and care. 3. That all advertising and social media shall be honest and not in any way fraudulent or misleading. Members should be responsible, respectful and professional on social media. 4. That no ASD will be knowingly sold to franchised commercial facilities, puppy brokers, puppy mills or agents. No stud dog will knowingly be bred to any bitch whose owner is directly or indirectly involved with any puppy broker, puppy mill or any other commercial enterprise whose business is involved in like activities. No ASD will be sold or donated to a research laboratory. No dog will be offered as a prize or sold at auction. 5. All breeding will be done with the intention of preserving the breed and not for purely commercial purposes. No registered Anatolian will be intentionally bred other than to a registered ASD. 6. All breeding Bitches and Dogs must be certified radiographic free of hip dysplasia by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or comparable agency. Preliminary results are not accepted. Copy of this certification to be provided to puppy buyers upon request. 7. All breeding Bitches and Dogs should be physically mature and at least two years of age with no disqualifying faults per the AKC standard. It is recommended that Bitches be limited to 3 litters in their lifetime and should not be bred after the age of 8 without Veterinary approval. 8. Puppies should not be removed from their mother and siblings before they are at least eight weeks old. 9. To realistically evaluate all puppies and to sell or place nonbreeding ASDs on contracts with limited registration papers (offspring cannot be registered with the AKC). 10. All breeders will take responsibility for all offspring produced and will assist in their lifetime placements and re-homing if necessary. ABOUT THE COVER On The Cover Pictured on the cover, Lucky Hit Sonra Genis of Cedar Rise (Lucky Hit DivaKiz Sonra x Gods Country Murray) Bred for and has superior proven working ability, the essence of the breed. Genis has lived his entire life with sheep, chickens, goats, llamas, geese, and ducks. He has raised several litters of puppies, including puppies from a different sire. Genis is incredibly nurturing and provides wonderful guidance for young Anatolians and incredible protection for his flock. Genis maintains a beautiful, proven balance between powerful protection and gentle nurturing, as all Breeding Anatolians should. Genis has spent his lifetime being tested by protecting sheep and/ or goats in a real world setting with serious predators. Only by testing for the essence of the breed and superior livestock guardian ability will our beautiful Anatolians be preserved as they were developed in Turkey. Anything less is just guessing. The cover shows Genis watching as a Nubian has a newborn, and the mom is bonding with it. Genis loves his goats and is particularly protective of newborns. Notice that Genis sits close enough to watch everything and still protects the newborn but is at a respectful distance so that the mom feels comfortable with him. 4 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES

I am sure it was a lovely event. I want to thank Laura Smith, Lesley Brabyn, and Leslie Sharp for their incredible work pulling this together. These are amazing women, and their dedication to the Club is inspiring. We will cover this show in the next Anatolian Times in early 2024. I am happy to announce that we have two new members, Regan Leston and Lesley Brabyn, who were able to fill vacant seats on our Board. It would be hard to find two people doing more for the Club. I am truly grateful that we have these hard-working women helping out. There will be an election in July. We will again be looking for members who have been active with the Club and are willing to step in and lend a hand to the many jobs needed to make our club work. If you are interested, please let the Board know. Of course, anyone who is eligible can run, regardless of ballot. More information on the election will be shared in an upcoming issue of the Times. Ron Arden, Leslie Sharp, Laura Smith, and Martha Davis, as members of the Bylaw committee, have put forward thoughtful Bylaw changes to help this Club run more smoothly. The Board unanimously supported all changes. Before the vote, we will email the proposed changes to our regular members to review and allow you to discuss any concerns you may have in a scheduled online meeting. Stay tuned for information on this in the upcoming months. We need your articles and photos for the next issue of the Times. The deadline for Volume I 2024 will be 1/05/2024. All submissions should be sent to [email protected] with details we can provide in the issue. I hope you are enjoying this fall weather. CHANGING GENIS FOR SONRA AND CAS Since DIKKAT was settling in so well and seemed quite happy here at LUCKY HIT, I decided it was time to remove the nurturing and sweet GENIS for two excellent puppy training dogs, SONRA (Genis’s mom) and CAS (Genis’s full sister). What I generally see in my Anatolians is that my females tend to insist that puppies behave in a more adult manner than my males. These females will enforce their requests for adult behavior in an escalating fashion. I was certain SONRA and CAS would not accept DIKKAT’S overly-insistent mouth licking. A quick lick is OK and shows the pup is being submissive but licking must stop immediately when the licking becomes irritating. And licking cannot continue as the pup matures! I reminded myself that DIKKAT was only four months old and was actually still just a young puppy! She weighed around 50 pounds so that made viewing her as a pup a bit more difficult. No matter how large an Anatolian pup is, it is important that the owner treat and interact with the pup as a pup... not as an adult dog. While their body might be quite large, their mental development progresses at a certain rate that isn’t changed by the overall size of the pup! To begin the change in adult supervision, I brought SONRA in with DIKKAT for about 20 minutes of supervised interaction. SONRA raised two litters and while she doesn’t tolerate excess puppy-like behaviors as the puppies age, she is excellent at an increase in force when she disciplines. DIKKAT ran up to Sonra and started excitedly licking SONRA’S mouth. SONRA just turned her head away, a clue that she was ready for the licking to stop. When DIKKAT continued licking with enthusiasm, THE TRAINING OF DIKKAT, AN OUTCROSS WORKING PUPPY AT LUCKY HIT RANCH PART TWO BY: ERICK CONARD, LUCKY HIT ANATOLIANS On April 8, 2021, hanging out with training goats, DIKKAT clearly has an exceptional conformation. 6 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
SONRA curled her lip and growled quietly. Wanting SONRA to accept her, DIKKAT continued licking, ignoring the curled lip and the quiet growl... a mistake. SONRA grabbed DIKKAT’S muzzle for just a second with a loud growl, then released it. DIKKAT stopped the licking for a couple of minutes but still danced around SONRA in a submissive puppylike manner. When DIKKAT started the licking again, SONRA grabbed her muzzle with a growl and pushed DIKKAT to the ground with force, held her down about three seconds, and then released her. DIKKAT didn’t have any punctures but two spots on her muzzle had the hair removed. DIKKAT seemed to get this message and, although she stayed near SONRA, there was no more licking. I moved SONRA out for a couple of days for DIKKAT to think about what happened and absorb SONRA’S lesson! A couple of days later I moved both SONRA and CAS in and GENIS out. This time, when either SONRA or CAS curled their lip and growled, DIKKAT stopped the licking and moved away! Over the next couple of weeks DIKKAT seemed to mature greatly. She rarely engaged in puppy-like excitement. Instead, she exuded a calm demeanor, a demeanor appropriate for a goat guardian! After about a week, she and CAS began playing together a bit... but I noticed that DIKKAT was always respectful of CAS even when playing! I liked seeing that! In addition to these two adult Anatolian females training DIKKAT, she was also being trained by the two dominant boer females. All of this training has worked together to make DIKKAT a calm young Anatolian puppy! DIKKAT still hasn’t shown the extreme lowered head I prefer in my dogs that indicates respectful submission to goats but she hasn’t been aggressive or abusive to them either. And best of all, she seems to genuinely like goats. What DIKKAT has that I really like is an even and steady temperament and very tolerant nature. She is quite fearless and I do like seeing that! She has a cousin that is also an outcross to my lines with some of her fearlessness and an even greater love of goats. He always wants to be in the middle of a group of goats and will stand still with his head lowered until even the tough goats accept him. In some ways they have similar styles. However, this boy was raised with livestock since he was quite young. I believe it helped him understand that when he “bows his head respectfully” his goats feel much more secure and comfortable! Just a reminder... if you are looking for a pup to protect your livestock it is vital that you choose your pup from two proven working parents. And it is important that the breeder raise their pups with sheep and/or goats from an early age. THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING A PUPPY WHAT “WAIT” MEANS! After feeding the dogs I came in. About 30 minutes later I heard my other dogs barking in an alarm call. I stepped outside and saw nothing! In a reassuring voice I said, “It’s OK. Nothing’s wrong.” and the dogs stopped barking. I started to step inside and heard a small yelp. The barking began again. All the attention was focused on DIKKAT, who was lying down by one of the gates to her area with her head almost on the ground. The two older anatolians with Dikkat, Kizzie and Cas, were standing over Dikkat, looking quite concerned but helpless to help her! “DIKKAT, What’s wrong? Is everything OK?” I yelled in a questioning voice. In response she yelped and whined while keeping her head down. She half stood up but kept her head almost on the ground. I immediately ran to her pen. I knew something was wrong but I couldn’t imagine what it was! Was her head stuck? Her head seemed in the wrong place for that! As I approached, I calmly and reassuringly repeated, “Wait DIKKAT. It’s OK. Wait... Wait...” DIKKAT lay still, appearing to feel better seeing I was coming. When I arrived I saw the problem. Somehow she had wedged her lower jaw between the gate and a wire that had not been tightened sufficiently 7 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
around the gate. Now, with her lower jaw jammed through the loop, the wire was quite tight! “My God, she could break her jaw!” I thought. If DIKKAT became too alarmed by how tightly her jaw was caught by the wire and began throwing her body around vigorously to jerk loose, breaking her jaw was a distinct possibility! I needed a wire-cutter to free DIKKAT and had to leave DIKKAT to get it. As I left I kept repeating as calmly with as much reassurance as possible, “DIKKAT, wait, wait!”, hoping desperately that DIKKAT had learned the “WAIT” command. From DIKKAT’S first day here, I made DIKKAT wait for her food. I do this every day for all my dogs. First, I bring the food for all animals in the area. I feed the goats first. The dogs have to “WAIT” and are not allowed to eat the goat food. While the goats are eating, I place a small amount of water from the tank in each dog food bowl. Next, I fill each bowl with the appropriate dog food (adult food for adults and puppy food for DIKKAT). Any time DIKKAT moves to eat from a bowl, I say “DIKKAT. WAIT.” (I try to use a specific command rather than always using “NO!”) I pick up and hand stir each bowl. I am not rushed so my dogs learn to lay down and watch while I prepare the bowls. When all the bowls are prepared, I pick up a bowl, say the dog’s name, and set the bowl down in front of that dog. To help DIKKAT learn to wait patiently, I give DIKKAT her bowl last. As they eat I occasionally pick up a bowl or reach in and move the food around. When I set the bowl down, I always pet and praise that dog. This method gives me a daily chance to teach each dog to have PATIENCE, SELF-RESTRAINT, and the “WAIT” command. Luckily, for the previous two weeks I had also begun teaching DIKKAT to stand still and “WAIT” for a treat. I first gave her the treat almost immediately but slowly extended the time DIKKAT was required to wait for the treat. As I ran for the wire-cutter, I hoped DIKKAT had grasped the concept of “WAIT” and would realize I was asking her to be still for a bit before freeing her! I certainly didn’t want her to break her jaw! I ran to the storage room but the wire cutter wasn’t there; it was even further away. However, I saw a goat hoof trimmer and, certain it would work, I picked it up and raced back to DIKKAT. She had remained relatively still while I was gone. As I drew near, she whined and moved a bit. “Wait... wait...” I said as calmly and soothingly as I could. I leaned over and smoothly cut the wire! DIKKAT was released! Of course, I held her to me, talking lovingly as I rubbed her body and head tenderly. I was so proud of her for handling this potentially jaw-breaking situation with such trust in me! She didn’t appear to have any emotional distress from the ordeal. After a bit, I looked at her mouth and was pleased to note that her mouth was in excellent condition! DIKKAT is a very intelligent Anatolian. As she has developed, she has been shedding 8 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
her earlier puppy behaviors and developing into a young Anatolian with a thoughtful and calm demeanor. The overly excited puppy play behaviors she engaged in when she saw me bringing her puppy food is fading away. Her more adult behavior not only is great with the goats, but since DIKKAT weighed 64 pounds at five months, her calmer demeanor makes her much easier for me to handle. I believe that DIKKAT’S excellent temperament combined with the training I gave her regarding the concept of “WAIT” were both instrumental in the successful outcome of this dangerous situation! As Anatolian owners it is our responsibility to teach our Anatolians as many different useful and practical commands as we can. While our Anatolians might choose to ignore the command when they don’t agree, they learn concepts quickly and you never know when a command might prove useful! TRIPS TO THE VET FOR PUPPY SHOTS Because I have so many Anatolians, for routine rabies vaccinations for my adults I tend have the vet come out for a Ranch Visit. It saves a lot of individual trips back and forth. However, a new puppy requires puppy shots which cannot be put off - puppy shots are on a completely different schedule than adult dog vaccinations. Pups require the multiple vaccine shots monthly. For the rabies vaccination I keep a two weeks minimum separation between the rabies vaccine and any other vaccinations to ensure the maximum immune response. (When vaccinations are “stacked” together the immune response of each vaccine is reduced. I want to make certain that my puppies obtain the maximum immune response possible when they are given the rabies vaccination!) As an additional benefit, these vet trips allow my pups to become less concerned, even comfortable, riding in a vehicle. And I make certain that my behavior only adds to the pup’s enjoyment of the trip. No harsh tones and no unpleasantness no matter what the pup is or is not doing!!!! I teach the pup to feel comfortable getting into the extended cab of the pick-up. I break these lessons into “steps.” Step one is designed to help the pup approach the vehicle door calmly. In my pick-up, the extended back seat is quite high off the ground (about 4 feet). If the pup acts apprehensive at being by the open door, we wait there about 30 seconds while I am petting and talking sweetly to the pup. Then we walk away a short distance and return. I repeat the sweet talk and petting. Soon, the pup isn’t nervous being at the open door. I was impressed how calmly and assuredly DIKKAT approached the open pick-up door. Step two is to help the pup feel calm with her feet on the floor of the pick-up. Generally I say “UP” in a strong and certain voice. I lift up on the lead and if the pup doesn’t step up I lift the pup’s front feet onto the floor board one at a time, praising effusively as I do so. With both of the pup’s front feet on the floor board, I praise and pet the pup, making certain the pup hears true enthusiam and happiness in my voice. I am willing to repeat this step until the pup immediately jumps up onto the floor board with confidence. It is vital that the pup understands that this location is a safe place and that the pup is in a safe position before you move on to the next step. Step three is to teach the pup to move onto the seat. I flip the lead around the headrest of the pickup’s front seat. DON’T TIE THIS LEAD. Simply hold it with one hand leaving the other free to help the pup! This time when the pup has her feet on the floor board, I say “UP.. UP” in an urgent and enthusiastic voice. Once I’m teaching this phase, I allow the pup to move forward but not backward. That is why the lead is secured around the headrest (BUT NOT TIED!). If the pup feels too afraid to go onto the seat and pulls back, the slip collar tightens. 9 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
DON’T LET THIS TIGHTENING CONTINUE! Immediately move the pup’s body through space (pick the pup up and place her onto the seat) in response to your command if she doesn’t move. It doesn’t matter if the movement is created by you or by the pup - what matters is the pup moves immediately! So if the pup pulls back, quickly reach down, pick up the pups body, and smoothly move the pup onto the seat! (I place my hand and forearm between the pups back legs to lift the pup.) The pup is quickly and easily moved onto the pick-up seat so what the pup realizes is that backing up led to discomfort and moving forward led to comfort. Imagine this situation mentally so you will be ready for what you need to do before actually attempting it physically! Naturally, once the pup is in the pick-up, I praise the pup enthusiastically and might even give the pup a tasty treat (like a bite of cooked chicken). After about 30 seconds, especially if the pup is acting nervous, I calmly tell the pup to get back out (I use “OK” and a hand gesture.) We walk away a short distance and then return and repeat this procedure as many times as necessary for the pup to feel comfortable in the back of the pick-up. It’s obvious that the pup begins to feel much better when she realizes she will be allowed to leave the pick-up at some point! DIKKAT has seemed completely at ease riding in the pick-up since I picked her up at the airport. However, the occasional “road trip” helps an Anatolian pup stay familiar with a vehicle ride and keeps the level of anxiety down as the pup matures. All lessons must be repeated occasionally as the pup matures to maintain the behaviors the pup has been taught. If I have another dog in need of a booster, or even just to see how the pup and another dog ride together, I bring another Anatolian. Generally, because I select for off-territory shut down, the two dogs (who have not lived in the same pasture) get along great. They are off-territory and therefore hesitant to make any rash decisions. The off-territory shut down helps them get along. They even seem to appreciate the company of the other dog. Each time I’ve taken DIKKAT for her shots she has gotten along beautifully with her companion Anatolian. Her time with SONRA (her grandmother) and CAS (her aunt) has certainly been beneficial, On May 12, 2021, hanging out with training goats and her granddam LUCKY HIT DivaKiz SONRA (SONRA), SONRA is a wonderful training female... Stern but fair with her granddaughter, DIKKAT. 10 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
as they both have given clear and measured guidance to DIKKAT regarding what behaviors are acceptable and what behaviors are NOT acceptable. If you only have one Anatolian pup and no adults (or no safe adults), Anatolian ettiquite might have to be missing from your pup’s training experience. If you have an excellent adult, that adult’s contribution to a pup’s training can be amazing! However, if I were afraid of an adult’s potential to engage in overly aggressive behavior with a young pup, I would not only keep that pup away from the adult but I would also NEVER BREED that undependable adult!!!! Anatolians that can’t be trusted with young pups are likely to be untrustworthy with young kids and young lambs! Of course, if you don’t raise your Anatolians in a working setting, reliability with kids and lambs might not be an issue for you! But I can assure you that it is an issue for those who purchase your pups for livestock protection. Both feriocity and nurturing are required in Anatolians. And guiding those two opposite behaviors is an Anatolian’s ability to make excellent judgement calls! So as a pup develops, I pay attention to the pup’s ability to correctly evaluate a situation and discern the best response possible. At the vet, DIKKAT demonstrated a calm self-assurance similar behavior in her dad, Gazi. After I opened the door to the vet’s office, I let DIKKAT look inside and size things up before I asked her to step inside. This few second pause allowed her to see the situation she was being asked to enter. Then she quickly steped inside. We walked to the scale (at 5 months she weighed 64 pounds) and I stepped on the scale to demonstrate that standing on the scale was OK even though the stainless steel felt different to her feet. Standing there, I asked DIKKAT to step on the scale with me. Once she was on, I stepped off and, standing right beside her, I reassured her so she would stay on and stand still. It is important when introducing your Anatolian pup to new and/or unfamiliar things that everything is sweet talk and petting. Any harsh tones or ugliness of any kind will be remembered, creating a negative memory that the pup will never forget! My vets and their entire staff know this and help make every experience at their office as pleasant as possible! The entire staff is excellent with baby-talk and petting! Using these methods, my trips to the vet become a fun adventure for both DIKKAT and me. I have the added bonus of knowing these trips develop DIKKAT’S behaviors in a fashion that will help me with DIKKAT for the rest of her life! 11 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
On September 12, 2023, Albert Joseph Suhajda left this world, leaving it a less colorful place without him. He was born on November 14, 1948 in Los Angeles, California, and lived for 74 magnificent years. His paternal grandparents emigrated to the US from Hungary and he was proud of his Hungarian heritage. He visited Hungary for the first time in May of this year, which he was super happy and excited about. He had two brothers and three sisters: Bob, Michael, Rosemary, Martha, and JoAnne. He grew up in Los Angeles, but after graduating from Junipero Serra High School in 1967, he decided to join the Air Force instead of going to college. After Basic training, he was quickly deployed to Vietnam where he served two tours. Albert loved the military and flew all over the US as a flight engineer. After meeting his wife Paula in 1974, he decided to retire from the Air Force in June 1975. They got married in October 1976 and were married for 46 joyful years. His sons, Gene (wife Verla) and Justin (wife Myriah), and grandchildren Dylan, Madelyn, and Hailey) always just saw him as a second father. The twins Madelyn and Hailey were born on Albert’s birthday, which made him super proud. He loved sports and was always looking forward to his grandson’s soccer games. During his lifetime, Albert worked as an auto mechanic, plumber and at McDonald Douglas, he was very proud to have worked as a hydraulic airplane mechanic on the first C17 cargo plane. While working full-time, he went back to school at Dominguez Hills University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree, with a concentration in accounting. We moved to Arizona in 1993, where he spent the next 21 years working as office manager and CFO at an electrical contractor before retiring in 2015. Albert had a big personality that could fill a room and he never met a person he did not like…He was a great talker and had many stories to tell. He could strike up a conversation with anyone about anything at any time. He could talk the ears off a brass donkey and often would. He was generous with his time for family, friends, and community. His sons looked to him as a trusted advisor for any type of home project they were doing, and usually, he would selflessly end up doing half of the project himself. If you look inside any of his sons’ homes, his handiwork is everywhere. In Arizona, Albert was the first President of his Homeowners Association, he served on the Whetstone Fire Station Board and was President of the local Kennel Club. Albert’s home in Arizona was built on 10 acres and since he was a man of many talents, he did many of the jobs on his own. Albert completed the plumbing, HVAC, roof, and even put up a few of the outside walls. He inspired and taught his sons to become handy and do a lot of their own home projects and repairs (but never as well as him). Albert loved animals. In Arizona, we had chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, sheep, a cow, and even a pig. His pride and joy were his Anatolian Shepherd Dogs. At one time he had six Anatolians, a German Shepherd, and two cats. Albert also showed his Anatolians at dog shows and most won their Championship titles. He also served as the Treasurer of the national Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club Association (ASDCA), which he did for three years.
AN INTERVIEW OF A WORKING DOG RANCHER: AMANDA RUSSO, A MEMBER OF THE ASDCA INTERVIEWED BY: DIANA MARTINEZ 1. Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you live? What are your hobbies? My name is Amanda, I’m 30. I live with my fiancé Colby, our 6-year-old son Logan, and our 4-year-old daughter Rylie. We live in Franklin, NH, and are building a new house as we lost ours to a fire in November 2022. My hobbies include crafting, making cups, blankets, clothing, and custom decals. I also love to read, write, do puzzles, and paint. My favorite thing is riding my horses with my friends and family. 2. Why and when did you get your first Anatolian? I got my first Anatolian shepherd in July 2018 after we acquired a small herd of goats. We already had rabbits and chickens we were raising and thought it wise to add protection for them since we had been seeing increasing pressure from foxes, hawks, raccoons, and other smaller predator animals. 3. How many working Anatolians do you currently have, and what are their ages? I currently have seven working Anatolian shepherds and one that is not safe with small livestock. Ch Stonecoat Kunai “Kunai” -5 years, Erelans Acres No Risk No Reward “Bryn” - 5 years Stonecoat Said Terrible Beastie “Kraken”- 4 years, FeathersGlen Bump in the Night “Bumpy”- 3 years, Fallenbranch River of Sundews “Ryka” -1 year, FeathersGlen Hurricane of Jacarandás “Pinkie Pie”- 1 year, Fallenbranch Aerial Ambush “Kestrel”- 8 months, Stonecoat Blazing Comet “Sozin”- 3 years. Not stock safe with small stock. 14 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
4. What kind of animals do your dog’s guard, and how many? My dogs currently guard goats, sheep, and horses. The numbers fluctuate, and we usually decrease before winter. Currently, there are ten goats, four sheep, and two horses. 5. What predatory problems do you have? At the end of 2018, we moved from our small farm to a 16-acre farm where we currently are in Franklin, NH. Our predators include two large packs of coyotes, black bears, foxes, bobcats, fisher cats, loose dogs, raccoons, skunks, hawks, owls, and skunks. The smaller predators are not really an issue since we no longer have chickens, but the dogs do not allow them anyway. 6. What qualities of the Anatolian do you appreciate most? I love their friendly and loving nature with my family and my stock, and anyone I tell them is “safe” but that they can instantly discern a threat and eliminate it. I am grateful they have an incredible sense of who is friend, neutral, and who is there to harm. I like knowing that my kid’s friends and the people working to rebuild our house are safe around the dogs, even if they want to touch them, but someone who is a real threat to me, my family, or my stock would be very sorry. I appreciate that my dogs are serious and constantly working on the property, but I can also take them off the property, and they are not savage killing machines. We can go to stores, shows, and the vet; they are perfectly behaved. 7. What do you think every working Anatolian should have or be taught? I think, above all, all Anatolians should be taught manners, leash manners, car manners, and manners for when they have to be in public. In my opinion, there is no excuse for a dog that cannot be handled at all, cannot safely be put in a car or taken to a vet. I think they should all be crate trained. I’ve had to crate several as they recovered from injuries/ surgery, and it was an invaluable skill so they were not panicked by having to be confined to a small space. I see many Anatolians and LGD in general that don’t even have a bond or trust with their shepherds, and it makes me sad. Of course, they should bond to stock, but I want all my dogs to bond to me and my family. 8. What kind of fencing, gates, or collars work best for you? We use a variety of different things. Some of my dogs are just on invisible fence collars and can come and go from pastures as they please. They do not test their boundaries and enjoy being free to patrol all our property. I also have pastures separated using ElectroNet and have yet to have a dog test those. They could jump over it but would rather remain with their stock and do their jobs. 9. Do you have any Vet/ Health maintenance recommendations? I fully vaccinate all my dogs as puppies, generally spacing out the shots so they don’t get multiple shots at once. I booster at a year and then every three years. I keep them on 15 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
monthly ivermectin for heartworm, and twice a year, I deworm and do coccidia prevention. I use Seresto collars to keep fleas and ticks off. Anatolians can be sensitive to anesthesia and should be dosed to effect, like a sighthound, rather than by weight. 10. What does your feeding and/or maintenance program include all year? My dogs all eat once a day, at night. Their bowls get filled, and they are given half an hour to eat. We get kibble discounted when bags come in ripped, so they aren’t on any specific food all the time and do great with the rotation. I have added a second meal for younger dogs, or dogs I think could use more weight. They seem to eat less in the summer and usually finish their food in the winter. If they finish it very quickly, I’ll increase their amount. I pay more attention to their appearance to gauge how much they get than just feeding them a specific amount each day. The older dogs maintain and choose to eat very little. The younger dogs almost always finish their dish of food. I fly spray my dogs in the summer, and I will put SWAT behind their ears if I notice flies bothering them. They get ivermectin yearround for heartworm, as mentioned before, Seresto for flea/tick, and dewormed/coccidia prevention twice a year. 11. What have been your biggest challenges and/or greatest rewards in using Anatolians as guardians? Our biggest challenge has to be our neighbor. We are pretty rural and surrounded by a lot of farms, but one neighbor is very anti-farm, anti-noise, and seems anti-animal in general. He often complains about the noise the dogs make while doing their jobs, even though they are not incessant barkers. They only bark if there is a threat or something is “off.” I’ve tried to explain their purpose, but he continues to call the police on us. The dogs are protected under our noise ordinance, so they don’t do anything, but it’s still frustrating. The biggest reward to having them is obviously that our livestock is safe, and I do not have to worry about them, but the love and bond I share with all my dogs is also incredible, 16 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES
and they adore me as much as I adore them. They are fantastic at their job, do not wander, do not bark constantly, and don’t pick fights with my house dogs. I also chose Anatolians because of their short, thick coats. It makes them fantastic for our climate, even in the cold of winter, and requires minimal grooming. They can be filthy, covered in mud, then dry, and everything falls off. They don’t mat or get stuff stuck in their fur. I only bathe once or twice a year and blow out their extra coat. 12. What advice would you give a newbie looking for a guardian dog? Do lots of research and talk to many different people who own/train them. There are multiple ways to accomplish something, and everyone has their own way of doing it. Take what works best for you, and file the rest away. They also may not be for everyone. Have a clear understanding of the breed you choose, and don’t try to force them to be something they’re not. That can create dangerous situations for both the owners and the dogs. I always spend days talking to people about their situations and what they expect from the dog they bring home before even deciding if placing an LGD with them is appropriate. They aren’t for everyone. 13. What have you learned from the breed? I have learned to be patient. Anatolians can be incredibly stubborn, but it’s usually me that’s wrong. I’ve had to change my training tactics; they are very intelligent and do not follow orders blindly. What I want has to be more important than what they want. I don’t force them to do things they are uncomfortable with, such as some of my dogs will not lie in public. As long as they are being respectful on leash, I generally do not ask for more in situations like that. We work together to accomplish our goals; we are partners. They help me and protect me and my livestock, and they are rewarded every day for the work they put in. They have shown me a completely different type of love from a dog. 2023 Annual Health Committee Report Purpose/Objective: The Health Committee is dedicated to preserving and promoting the health and welfare of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog. The goal is to maintain and preserve the Anatolian Shepherd Dog’s longevity, soundness and overall health and well-being. This goal will be achieved by promoting, educating and encouraging correct and ethical breeding practices and care that ensure the Anatolian Shepherd Dog’s ability, soundness and health through the submission of educational working articles, posting website references, producing educational pamphlets and other duties that will benefit the fulfillment of this goal. Members: Chairperson: Janet Dotson Committee Members: Natalie Thurman Accomplishments since last annual report: We continue to submit health related articles to the Anatolian Times, as well as additional health related articles submitted by members wishing to contribute. Old Business: None New Business: • Both Natalie and myself have attended numerous webinars on reproduction and other related health issues, including behavioral issues and genetic anomalies. The Kokopeli webinars we attended were self funded. We also try to keep up with current health concerns related to canines by reading health briefs. • We will continue to strive to have health related educational opportunities at ASDCA Sponsored events. • We will continue to reach out for other health related educational opportunities through breeders, Vets, and other venues. Financial Expenditures: None What can the BOD / Membership do to assist you: • As it is the 10 year anniversary of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog participating in the CHIC program. We are overdue for a current health survey, we would like the board’s support in setting this up. • Members may submit requests for select topics of interest. • We would also like the opportunity to review articles submitted by members prior to publishing to ensure that health information presented in these articles is accurate and not misleading. 2023 Annual Companion Events Report Members: Martha Davis, Companion Events Liaison Purpose/Objective: To promote participation of Anatolians in companion and performance activities. Accomplishments since last annual report: Summary of Performance titles awarded to Anatolian Shepherds in the past year: Canine Good Citizen (CGC) -11, Canine Good Citizen Advanced (CGCA) – 3, Rally Intermediate -1, Farm Dog Certified (FDC )- 2, Trick Dog Novice (TKN) -1, BCAT -1, Scentwork Advanced (SA) -1, Scent Work Containers Excellent (SCE) -1, Scentwork Interior Excellent (SIE) -1, Scentwork Exterior Excellent (SEE) -1, Scentwork Exterior Master (SEM) -1, Virtual Scentwork Beginner -1. Arrangements have been made with evaluator Ron Horn to do Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing at the 2023 National Specialty in Greeley, CO. Old Business: AKC has retained several policies implemented in response to the pandemic: the pilot virtual title programs, and some of the relaxed rules which assist clubs in hosting trials. New Business: I plan to make arrangements for CGC testing at the 2024 National Specialty at Purina Farms. Financial Expenditures: None. What can the BOD / Membership do to assist you: Submit for the Anatolian Times, any performance titles earned, as well as articles about your experiences or expertise with companion/performance events. Let me know what your interests are and I’ll try to address them. Other miscellaneous information: Training and behavioral issues are big factors in dogs becoming homeless. Owners who invest the effort in training for companion or performance activities enjoy a special relationship with their dogs; they are committed and unlikely to abandon them. Also participation in companion/performance events, where it is unusual to find Anatolians, can bring positive attention to the breed. It is an opportunity to educate any exhibitors, judges, and spectators who may be seeing an Anatolian for the first time. HOW I CAME TO OWN AN ANATOLIAN BY: JIM GERACE My wife first saw an Anatolian at a small farm when she stopped to buy some produce. They recently acquired an Anatolian pup to protect their goats. She searched the internet for information about the breed and, ultimately, for a breeder. One day, she announced that she bought a dog, which would soon arrive at the airport. About a year prior, she noted that Chance (from a movie) would be a good name for a dog. Now ten years old, Chance is a black female weighing 120 pounds. She created quite a stir in the neighborhood as no one ever heard of Anatolian Shepherds, much less ever seen one. Her coloring and markings are quite striking, and as it turns out, black is a rarer color. Lia, our second Anatolian, is eight years old, fawncolored, and weighs 112 pounds. Together, they are quite a dual, hiking desert trails and touring the neighborhood. Our backyard backs up to South Mountain Park in Phoenix, AZ, the largest municipal park in the United States and one of the largest urban parks in North America and the world. Chance is the most famous and photographed dog on the south side of South Mountain. We have been hiking there for ten years, and thousands of hikers and bike riders have seen her. Many paused to ask what breed, commented how beautiful and asked to take pictures. Lia also attracts attention and is very friendly and outgoing. She likes riding in the car and loves Home Depot and Sur La Table, where she gets treats. Chance is more reserved around strangers. My calm behemoths become quite animated when they spot coyotes or javelinas and love going after them. Ever alert, they bark when anyone approaches the house well before they get to the doorbell. Neighbors were so impressed they read up on the breed and got one, then a second one, and now we have 4 Anatolians in the neighborhood. Chance was very bonded to my wife, who sadly passed away four years ago. Wherever Linda was in the house, Chance was next to her and slept on the floor next to her at night. Chance lost ten pounds and kept looking for Linda for several months. She regained her weight and now is very bonded to me. Anatolians aren’t just for protecting other animals; they are also great family dogs. Anatolian Shepherds Rule! 23 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES

REGIONAL SHOW GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA My first time solo chairing a Regional was certainly an experience I will remember. I would strongly encourage club members to consider doing the same! The support I received from ASDCA, AKC, Cindy Stancil, Greenville Kennel Club, MBF, and fellow club members was amazing. A big thank you to Greenville and Piedmont Kennel Clubs for a wonderful Cluster! It is always good to see fellow Anatolian Shepherd Dog lovers. The lineup of ASD’s and presenters was wonderful. It’s great to see junior handled as well as veteran and puppy sweepstakes. The judges and ring stewards did an outstanding job. Huge thanks, and hats off to all! Despite several entrants’ emergencies necessitating them being absent, there was a good turnout. Good sportsmanship was evident, and the dogs were well presented and handled beautifully. My apology for the lack of individual class candid pictures. Most entrants were owner-handled, and the professional handlers were great, but no one had extra hands to take pictures. The person I had lined up had an unfortunate run-in with a yellow jacket beehive and could not take photographs. Luckily, the incident did not necessitate hospitalization. Such is dog showing; one never knows how things will happen. Thanks to those who did manage to take a few. Congratulations to all the winners over the four days of exhibiting!!! Wonderful lineup! Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, their breeders, and handlers Rock!! It’s the best breed ever! Nancy Wargas 25 PAGE ANATOLIAN TIMES

On June 10, 2023, in conjunction with a dog show, Kathy Gerlach and I participated in the Meet the Breed Booth. At our booth we displayed the traditional Turkish collar and the fancy collars – all imported from Turkey. Our ambassador for this event was CH Gerlach 2020 Kayden. Kayden was the star of the event and even sported the fancy collar and matching harness. He was very stunning dressed in his Turkish gear! Meet The Breed at Woofstock
