Wyatt and I have come a long way together and our bond and teamwork is what sets us apart. I am deeply honored to be one of only three female amateur handlers in the last 76 years to take the top spot in the Open Championship. And to do it with Wyatt, the grandson of a German import (and longhaired, to boot) is extra special. Wyatt’s pedigree brings in unique genetics, sound health and longevity and exceptional versatility. I hope he will continue to make a lasting contribution to the breed and leave an impact for generations to come. Maga is a once-in-a-lifetime girl who simply has a knack for getting it done. It really is quite humbling. She really loves the grounds at Ardmore and even when she drew the toughest course to navigate and handle through, she excelled. She has the biddability to handle shorter in the tighter areas and the drive to range out when the course opens up and allows her to lay it down. She is honest in that she may be gone and out of sight at times, but invariably, you ride up to find her standing picture-perfect with style to die for. I want to thank Justin Buehring for scouting and pointing her out to me multiple times, standing in cover. I also want to thank Perfection Kennels for their guidance. It is amazing what these dogs can do when they don’t develop bad habits and learn in a step by step program with an easy to understand foundation. Lastly, I want to encourage everyone to enjoy the ride. This sport is FUN! ON THE COVERTHE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 5 ▬

Greetings,The Board of the Weimaraner Club of America held a productive and forward-moving meeting on Wednesday, February 11. Here are some key highlights from the work underway to strengthen our programs, improve the member experience, and support our club’s future.Conformation Futurity RulesFollowing additional member feedback on the Futurity & Maturity Program published in December, the Board approved an update to the Conformation Futurity rules. The revised rules will now include awards for Best Dog and Best Bitch. Vickie Margolis is updating the full Futurity/Maturity Program rulebook, and the new version will be posted on the WCA website under Events → Futurity/Maturity.Electronic Voting for JudgesThis year, voting for judges for the National Specialty and the Futurity & Maturity Program will be conducted electronically.Members will receive a ballot directly in their inbox—quick, secure, and easy to complete in under five minutes. No more postage, no more waiting for mail to arrive at the WCA office. Watch for your ballot next week.Financial Update• December net income: $41,887.34, driven largely by membership dues.• January results: a modest loss of $2,238.59—still an improvement over prior years.• The loss from the magazine continues to decrease; in January it was $1,150, an improvement from the losses associated with the former print magazine, which in FY25 averaged $4,802. November costs showed a profit of $112 due to ads for December. • Once the improved member portal is launched, financials will be published quarterly for easier member access.• The FY25 resulted in a loss of $45,030. The report will be added to the member portal of the WCA website.Technology ImprovementsEnhancing our technology platforms remains a top priority. Tamara Brower presented the results of her comprehensive review and recommended a solution that improves member experience, security, and administrative efficiency. The Board requested a few clarifications and anticipates being ready for a vote in March. This upgrade will mean:• Stronger protection against phishing• Improved access to the Bremar database• Individual member passwords for the member portalA more modern, secure, and user friendly system is on the horizon.Recognizing Volunteer Impact & Looking AheadThe strength of the Weimaraner Club of America comes from the dedication of our volunteers—committee members, event committees, and individual contributors who give their time, talent, and passion to support our breed and our mission. Our primary sources of income continue to be membership dues, the National Field Trial, and the National Specialty.• The 2025 National Field Trial netted $3,000, thanks to fundraising, entries, and many individual contributions.• The 2026 National Specialty will be held in Bennett, Colorado in May, and the National Show Committee is already hard at work. There will be many opportunities to support the National Specialty—through fundraising, volunteering, or entering your dogs. Every contribution strengthens the event and the club. The WCA currently has openings for three committee chairs. Membership, Legislation and Breeder Referral. You can find more details about these committees on the WCA website under About Us →Committees. HealthSubmitted by Debra Konkol, Health Chair Non-Surgical Treatment for Bladder Stones: Cystoscopic Laser LithotripsyA new minimally invasive treatment option called cystoscopic laser lithotripsy is changing the game for pets with bladder and urethral stones. The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital is among the first veterinary hospitals in the U.S. to offer lithotripsy using state-of-the-art thulium fiber technology.“Historically, bladder stones were removed surgically or, for larger dogs, via laser therapy,” says Dr. Joseph Bruner, a board-certified small animal internist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. “We now offer the newest laser technology, which allows us to treat most dogs and female cats noninvasively. No surgical incisions or sutures are involved, making pets’ recovery faster and easier.”The procedure uses a thin scope and a tiny laser fiber to target and break apart bladder or urethral stones while the patient is under anesthesia or heavy sedation.“The laser beam shatters the stone into small pieces that can be flushed out,” explains Dr. Bruner.New Laser More PreciseThis advancement is possible thanks to the thulium fiber laser. This newer generation laser is more energy-efficient and precise than previous systems.“The holmium laser was the workhorse for years,” Dr. Bruner says, “but it required a lot of power and produced heat that could cause tissue damage.“The thulium laser uses less energy and generates less heat. Since the fiber is smaller, we can now treat dogs anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds or more, and female cats around 10 pounds or more, noninvasively. Before, laser lithotripsy was an option only for large dogs.”The ability to perform this procedure without surgery is a major step forward, especially for patients with recurrent stones. “For pets that keep getting stones, this gives us a way to remove them without putting those pets through multiple surgeries,” explains Dr. Bruner.Dr. Joseph Bruner is a board-certified small animal internist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. HEALTHWhen to Choose Laser LithotripsyNot every patient is a candidate, though. “The ideal cases are pets with five or fewer stones, or one large stone that can be fragmented and flushed out in a single session,” Dr. Bruner notes. “If there are too many stones or the stones are very large, surgery may still be the better option.”Additionally, the procedure cannot be performed on male cats because their urethras are too narrow. The procedure is performed under anesthesia, and pets typically go home the same day.“We always do a consultation first to make sure the patient is a good candidate,” he says. “Once cleared, the patient will typically come in for the procedure the next day and go home that evening.”Side effects are generally mild. “Some pets may have a little blood in their urine or mild discomfort after the procedure,” Dr. Bruner explains. “We monitor for infection, since stones can harbor bacteria, and we usually prescribe antibiotics afterward to help prevent issues.”While costs vary depending on case complexity, Dr. Bruner says it’s comparable to the cost of a traditional surgical procedure done at a general practice. With noninvasive cystoscopic laser lithotripsy, however, there’s no incision, which minimizes pain and speeds recovery.Management to Reduce Risk of Bladder StonesAs with all bladder stone cases, long-term management is key.“Some stones simply can’t be prevented due to genetics or metabolism, but diet and infection control are critical,” Dr. Bruner clarifies. “We always recommend a nutritionally balanced commercial diet and close follow-up with your veterinarian.”Dr. Bruner encourages owners to ask about non-surgical treatment options if their pet develops stones.“Our internal medicine service is introducing noninvasive and interventional procedures,” he says. “If your pet is diagnosed with bladder stones, talk to your veterinarian. Laser lithotripsy could be a good alternative for your pet.”Dr. Insung Chun, a veterinarian pursuing a residency in small animal internal medicine, uses cystoscopic laser lithotripsy to punch a hole in the surface of a very large bladder stone. The laser tip emits a neon green light. At right, the stone begins to break apart after many holes have punctured it. (The featured image shows radiographs of a dog with bladder stones (the pile of little white objects at center) at left, and the same dog after the stones have been removed non-invasively via laser lithotripsy.)THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 11 ▬

EIMARANE WCLUB OF AMERICARNATIONAL FIELD TRIAL

This year’s National Field Trial was certainly a lesson in “it takes a village.” In the space of days, this trial went from “this is the easiest trial in the last 25 years” to what will be known as “The Year of the Horse.” First, our assistant Wrangler was significantly injured in a riding accident, halving the number of horses our Wrangler could bring. Then a bunch of horses at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event went home with EHV-1, a fairly common equine virus, but very contagious. All of a sudden, impacted states were requiring more frequent vet checks and certifications for traveling horses. It was a bridge too far for our Wrangler, who had to pull out the day of the drawing. Then something special happened. The committee, participants, judges met right before the drawing. How do we handle this? Do we postpone? Do handlers without horses have to walk? How is that fair? How do we make this equitable? Then someone with a horse turned to a competitor without and said “I will make sure you are mounted.” And someone else said “I won’t ride out to watch, put a Judge on my horse.” And a third person said “I think I can find one more horse to bring out.” We all reached common agreement on Equine Biosecurity measures. The trial was on.So, we start this write up not thanking the volunteers who work so very hard to make a National event happen. Instead, we first thank the Hero Horses (and Mule) of the National Field Trial. These horses worked long days under Judges, Marshals, Handlers and Scouts, often with multiple rider changes in a single day. Because they were closely monitored, no horse became sick, and no horse came up lame. But they sure were tired by the end of the trial.Thank you, Hero Horses (and Mule): Iceman, Festus, Grace, Dakota, Whiskey, Zoey, Perfect, Comet, Monday, Rattler, and Pistol (the Mule). You worked hard so we could have a great event. And Thank You to their owners who so generously allowed them to be ridden by, well, everyone. That spirit of collegial competition and sportsmanship carried on through the entire event. Everyone pulled together. The “I need a Horse” whiteboard saw everyone mounted. The entire camp was Johnny-on-the-spot for Terrifying Tuesday when we successfully navigated a brace of Open, off-site Open Callbacks, the entire Futurity, Photographs, a Judge changeover, AND the first two braces of the Amateur. All four of our judges, Ashley Uffman, Jeff Singewald, Sherrie Moseley, and Mick Cheshire, commented upon it. “This breed really has something here. Everyone has come together; competitors, but also helping each other with a whole heart. Other breeds don’t have this.” They also commented upon the quality of the dogs we presented them. “The Weimaraner has really come a long way as a field trial dog. These are all quality dogs. It was a difficult decision for all the right reasons.” We did ourselves proud.WEIMARANER CLUB OF AMERICA2025 NATIONAL FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS & FIELD FUTURITYDECEMBER 6, 2025 TO CONCLUSION | LAKE MURRAY FIELD TRIAL GROUNDS, ARDMORE, OKTHE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 16 ▬

NATIONAL FIELD TRIAL Many thanks to our judges who traveled distances short and long, hauled horses in challenging circumstances, and spent hours in the saddle watching good dogs make good and good dogs make mistakes. But, they were all good dogs.A large group of volunteers, a combination of veterans and newcomers, brought both experience and new ideas helping make this a great event. On the Field Trial side, were our Stake Managers: Mindy Brown (Puppy), John Bonner (Open), Esteri Hinman (Futurity), Jeff Brown (Amateur), and Carey Killion (Derby). Months before the event, significant work was performed by the OFTCA to maintain the grounds with WCA participation from Bryan Reynolds and Jeff Brown. This cleaned up courses, giving us two equitable 1-hour courses. Bird Planter Kory McGaughy deftly balanced the need for birds being found with ensuring they’d be found in places that showcase a dog’s talent. Dog Wagon Lead Anna Doornick and her posse of regular dog wranglers, Michael Stahl, JR Mallon, and Darcie Godwin kept the trial moving. Our Gunners Rodney Moon, TJ Hidalgo, and Gene Moseley, brought their experience and expertise, never missing a bird.A great National event is more than just a field trial though, on the Event side were “Cruise Director” Shonagh McVean and her Galley Hands: Board members Barb Shepard, Kayleen Klier and Pat Gannon with Kay Walker and Wendy Moon kept the camp fed for the week through three daily meals. Shonagh also organized the delicious Dual Welcome Party dinner on Friday. Chip Glennon led our Shotgun Raffle, which is often the difference between making and losing money on the event. Michael Stahl and JR Mallon were quick on the shutter and created our Facebook presence for those who could not attend. Finally we had April Mallon, who went from co-Secretary to taking on the entire role when Esteri Hinman stepped into the Chair. April brought a new vision to the National Field Trial with branding, catalogs, running orders, and curating our Facebook page. After 27 years behind the Secretary table it was a very different experience for Esteri to be part of the trial in a different role. She didn’t know what to do with herself half the time. Thank You.Congratulations to all our winners:Charlie Williams Service Award: Diane Vater & Chuck CooperNational Champion: Wyatt with Breeder/Owner/Handler April MallonNational Amateur Champion: Maga with Breeder/Owner/Handler Bryan ReynoldsNational Open Puppy: Starlight with Breeder/Owner/Handler Justin BuehringNational Open Derby: Whodi with Handler Diane VaterNational Field Futurity: Filly with Owner/Handler Stacie RobertsMany thanks to our Participants, Volunteers, Committee, Judges, Owners and Hero Horses, each of you contributed to this great event.National Open Puppy (8 Starters)Judges: Ashley Uffman & Jeff SingewaldBrace 1Boozey – (Chip Glennon)Charli – (Carey Killion)Following a 3 hour fog delay, anticipation was high for both dogs and handlers at the start of the Puppy stake. The first brace broke away at 11:23 am under cloudy skies, with a light fog still remaining. Both dogs got off to a solid start, hunting well for their handlers. At the 5 minute mark, Charli made a nice move hunting the cover with a big forward cast. Boozey was working the cover well, staying ahead of her handler. At the 9 minute mark, both puppies were lucky to miss the cottontail that zoomed out behind them and in front of the gallery, delivering laughs for both the handlers and judges. Nearing the airport, Charli made another smart forward cast following the brush line. Both puppies finished strong and forward, still working the cover when time was called.Brace 2Sassy – (Bryan Reynolds)Starlite – (Justin Buehring)Brace 2 of the Puppy stake broke away at 11:48 am, a bit of fog still remaining. Both had a great start with no puppy shenanigans, and were off to the races. At just a minute in, Starlite makes a big move up the edge of the cover and briefly goes out of sight, with Sassy not too far behind her. Starlite is displaying a lot of zip, making big moves. Not to be outdone, at the 6 minute mark Sassy turns on the afterburners to catch up with her bracemate. At 9 minutes, Starlite makes another big cast forward and out of sight. Sassy is forward and working the cover hard, convinced that someone must have forgotten to put birds out for her. At the 5 minute mark, Artu makes a big forward cast, and is out of sight. Both puppies are digging deep into the cover, showing the true grit of bird dogs in the making. Time is called with both pups showing an athletic run and a keen desire to hunt for their handlers.THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026▬ 1 7 ▬

Brace 4Kaiser – (Kevin Engle)Mabel – (Chip Glennon)The last brace of the Puppy stake broke away at 12:45, and still no sign of the cloud cover lifting. A clean breakaway with both puppies moving forward and getting down to business, the future is bright for Weimaraners, and this crop of puppies will surely be leading the way. After a turn in the course, Mabel is seen hunting in deep cover. She works her way out into the open portion of the course making a nice move up the brush line, with Kaiser not far behind working the edges. National Grand Amateur Championship (29 Starters)Judges: Sherrie Moseley & Michael CheshireAfternoon, Tuesday December 9, 2025. The Amateur Championship started a bit later than planned due to the time taken Tuesday morning to complete the Open Championship, including the call backs, followed by the running the Futurity Stake after lunch.Brace 1Avy – (Stacie Roberts)Rain – (TJ Hidalgo)The brace broke way at 2:40 pm with sunny skies and a temperature of 55 degrees. After a nice break away for the pair down the chute and past the trees across from the oil wells, Rain started the action with a find before the duck pond at the 15 minute mark, Avy backing. As the pair made the first horseshoe turn south at the road, both dogs darted across the road onto what will eventually be course 2, where Avy was found standing at 29 minutes at a swath of grass and Rain was whoa-ed into a back. After a relocation Stacie was unable to produce a bird and took a non-productive. On the relocation TJ took Rain back onto course 1, where she moved ahead and had a find at the 34 minute mark on the left end of the first crossing waterway. In catching up, Avy produced a find at the other end of the same waterway at the 36 minute mark. At the far end of the field Rain had a stopto-flush at the 41 minute mark. Both dogs worked north, made the second U-turn and worked the west edge southward until Rain had a find at 50 minutes along a grass edge with Avy backing at distance without a word from her handler. The dogs worked steadily for another 5 minutes until divided find at the 56 minute mark. Both dogs finished the busy hour.Brace 2Robber – (Mary Brown)Raffi – (Kelly Bagley)This brace broke away at 3:50 pm in the field headed toward the stand of trees before the Bear Trap. After 5 minutes Kelli picked up Raffi, who was not ranging to the handler’s expectation. Robber moved on alone with a series of big casts, briefly out of sight but showing to the front three times. As she crested the hill headed to the airfield, Mary found him standing on a grass edge off the course to the far left. Mary quickly kicked up a bird for a find at 20 minutes. Robber moved ahead past the airfield and was found standing at 25 minutes off the big point. Mary was unable to find a bird and took a non-productive. Robber made a series of big forward moves and was found standing at 50 minutes on the brush edge in the field below the second set of oil wells. Robber stood stylishly while Mary did a thorough search of the brush and eventually produced the bird. Robber resumed his big forward moves and stuck to the far left hand edge barely visible as the light faded. He stopped 58 minutes at the end of the thick grass edge but Mary found nothing but feathers, resulting in a non-productive. Robber finished the hour.Brace 3Zip – (Chip Glennon)Shiner – (TJ Hidalgo)Zip and Shiner broke away at 7:55 am under partly cloudy skies and 45 degree temps. After a pleasing break away for both dogs, Shiner was found standing in the grass on the LHS of the chute, with Zip backing. TJ was unable to find a bird and took a non-productive. Both dogs resumed a generally forward run and at 37 minutes Shiner was found buried in the woods at the end of the big field after the first U-turn. After a lengthy search TJ found birds running in the woods for a find. While Shiner was working in the woods, Zip made the turn up the big field and had a find on the edge at 41 minutes. After the second U-turn, Zip failed to handle a bird and its day ended at the 45 minute mark. Shiner finished the hour.Brace 4Lancer – (Wayne Cowles)Graf – (Tom Koehler)The brace broke away at 9:00 am at the Bear Trap. Lancer made a big cast and was out of sight for a while but the scout put him on the course in the big field behind the fireworks stand. Moving down the big swath of grass that bisects the field Lancer got under a bird and his day was over at the 9 minute mark. Meanwhile Graf worked at a steady big gun dog pace. At the 22 minute mark, he made game across from the big point past the airfield, then stood. After a relocation Tom moved Graf on and took a non-productive. Graf resumed his steady work until he stopped in tall grass at the 50 minute mark. Tom relocated Graf twice and he eventually recorded a find. National Open Derby (5 Starters)Judges: Michael Cheshire & Sherrie MoseleyBrace 1Sage – (Keri Cassinelli)Whodi – (Diane Vater)To kick off the last stake of the 2025 WCA NFT, the first brace of the Derby broke at 10:54 am under sunny skies. A light breeze, and a perfect day for a field trial. Both dogs wasted no time getting down to business, working to the front for their handlers. At 5 minutes, Whodi is seen standing on the edge of the cover with Sage buried inside. As the handlers approach, there is movement and a bird is produced. Whodi pushes hard to the front, and both dogs are getting hot. Whodi’s handler gets him to the pond for a quick water break, and before his cooldown he cards a find at the water’s edge. At 19 minutes, Whodi is found standing the edge of a small island, intense and stylish. His handler has to work hard to find the birds buried deep in the cover, ultimately producing two. Whodi is off on the chase, and while his scout rounds him up Sage continues to work forward. Whodi cards another find along the edge at the 28 minute mark, and both dogs finish strong and to the front when time is called.Brace 2Charm – (Deanna Beach)Friedrich – (Michael Stahl)Both dogs broke away fast and forward at 11:28 am, temperatures warming up rapidly. The handlers and dogs quickly separate, each working one edge of the cover. Charm displays caution working the breeze coming off the lake, and is rewarded with a covey find at 9 minutes. Friedrich continues working forward, with finds at 19 and 25 minutes. Charm has a find at 17 minutes and another just before time is called. Both dogs finish strong and to the front.Brace 3Filly – (Stacie Roberts)ByeThe last brace of the 2025 NFT broke away during the warmest part of the day at 12:15 pm, running as a bye. Understanding Field Trialsby Stacie Roberts & Shirley NilssonA field trial is a competition that showcases a breed in a simulated hunting event. In the Weimaraner Club of America, dogs compete in pointing-dog field trials to find, point, and retrieve upland birds. Birds can be wild or planted, and usually consist of chukar or quail. Dogs run in braces and are judged on range, style, and application. The juvenile stakes, puppy and derby, emphasize natural ability and potential as future competitors, while the broke stakes (All Age and Gun Dog) require demonstrated manners and polished bird work. In retrieving stakes, a bird may be shot for the dog on course or in a callback, where steadiness and retrieving are judged. Field trials are similar to hunt tests and ratings tests in many ways, but the biggest difference is that field trials judge dogs against each other for placements rather than against a fixed standard for pass/fail.What the field trials reveal about the WeimaranerField trials showcase a Weimaraner’s natural instincts and trained abilities. They reveal a dog’s capacity to find, point, and retrieve birds and to pursue hunting objectives. In All-Age stakes, a bigger, more independent run is desired, reflecting the breed’s endurance and self-drive. In Gun Dog stakes, dogs should hunt at a reasonable gun-dog range and handle kindly, demonstrating steadiness, range control, and cooperative behavior with the handler. Taken together, field trials illuminate athleticism, drive, temperament, and style traits that breeders and judges seek to sustain and improve within the breed.A typical day at a Weimaraner field trialField trials are long commitments, often spanning a weekend for regular trials and extending to a week for National or large regional events. There are several stakes offered each day, and events may run on one or two courses. Run orders are posted ahead of time based on a random draw conducted after entries close. Competitors often camp on site, and dogs rest in crates or on stake-outs while waiting for their turn. Run orders can change, and braces may end early if either bracemate is picked up for infractions. It’s wise to arrive well before your run time. Spectators may walk or ride with braces, provided they stay behind the judges; if a bird field is used, spectators must stand outside to avoid interfering with gunners. If callbacks for retrieval are required, they’re usually held near camp. Spectators are welcome but must wear orange and stand at a safe distance. During callbacks, the top dogs in contention for placements are notified. Dogs are brought up one at a time; a planted bird is then flushed and shot as the dog remains steady through the fall and retrieves to hand. When the day’s placements are announced, the horns signal attendees to gather and hear the results. The rhythm, prep, run, report, defines the field-trial day for participants and supporters.Roles you’ll encounter in a field trialTwo judges are required for each stake and are typically mounted on horseback, though judging from ATVs is permissible on some formats. Handlers may be owners, amateurs, or professionals, guiding the dogs from horseback or on foot while avoiding over-handling. When a dog goes on point, the handler dismounts and works the bird, often using a blank gun to signal the flush. In broke stakes, the handler must walk back and collar the dog or advance the dog’s position onto the course as needed. A Scout may accompany the handler, riding away from the gallery to locate a dog that is out of sight. The Scout cannot handle the dog but can communicate with the handler, carry water, and hold a horse during bird work. A good Scout is invaluable for safety, pace, and communication on the course. Why field trials matter to the breed’s purpose and functionField trials matter because they let Weimaraners demonstrate both natural ability and finished bird work in a competitive THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 30 ▬

setting. Breeders and enthusiasts can observe titles earned by field-trial dogs and watch them in action—seeing athleticism, drive, and style in real time. These events help ensure the breed retains its essential function: finding, pointing, and retrieving with independence, reliability, and refinement. By showcasing range, steadiness, bird work, and temperament, field trials contribute to the breed’s ongoing development and quality.A closer look at the experience and its broader valueFor participants and spectators, field trials offer a living demonstration of the Weimaraner’s capabilities and temperament. The blend of instinct and trained performance provides practical insight into breeding decisions and training methods. The structure of the event, two judges, a cadre of handlers and scouts, and a clear sequence from point to flush to retrieve also reinforces safety, humane handling, and respect for the bird. Observing a dog under field-time pressure illuminates how breeding and training choices translate to real-world hunting scenarios.Takeaways for new and returning attendees• Field trials are full-day or multi-day affairs with multiple stakes and potential schedule changes.• Spectators participate safely and respect flight lines, gunners, and judges; orange vests or other visibility gear are typically required.• Watch how dog, handler, and bird interact—steadiness, range, and retrieving success come from disciplined execution.• The Scout role enhances safety and communication on the course.• View outcomes as a snapshot of the breed’s ongoing development and a benchmark for future breeding and training goals.• These events serve as a bridge between the breed’s ancestral purpose and its contemporary roles in sport and companionship.Field trials are important to Weimaraners in that they offer a rigorous, authentic arena where instinct and training converge. They illuminate the breed’s purpose—finding, pointing, and retrieving with style, independence, and reliability—while inviting owners, breeders, and enthusiasts to learn, observe, and contribute to the Weimaraner’s evolving legacy.A note for members and readersIf you’re curious about field trials, consider attending a trial as a spectator to see the Weimaraner’s capabilities firsthand. For those interested in getting involved, check with your regional Weimaraner club about volunteer opportunities, such as assisting with Scout duties, helping with handlers, or coordinating spectator areas. The sport thrives on community participation and shared commitment to the breed’s well-being and development. Field Trial at a Glance (quick reference for a two-page spread)FIELD TRIALS AT A GLANCE • What it is: A competition that tests a dogs ability to find, point, and retrieve upland birds in a simulated hunting environment.• How it differs from tests: Field trials judge dogs against each other for placements, while tests are pass/fail against a fixed standard.• Stakes you’ll hear about: Puppy, Derby (juvenile), All Age, Gun Dog (broke), and Retrieving stakes.• Key people and roles:◊ Judges: Usually two per stake, on horseback (some formats allow ATVs).◊ Handlers: Owners, amateurs, or professionals; guide the dog to the bird and manage the course flow.◊ Scout: Rides with the handler, locates dogs out of sight, communicates needs, and helps with safety.• What happens on the course: Dog points a planted or released bird; handler dismounts to work the bird; a blank gun signals the flush; in broke stakes, the dog is re-collared or steered to the next area; retrieves are completed to hand. • Spectator etiquette: Stay behind judges; wear orange; respect the gunners and the flight lines; do not interfere with the birds or dogs. • Practical takeaways for attendees:◊ Arrive early, bring appropriate gear, and be prepared for a full or multi-day event. ◊ Watch the interaction of dog, handler, and bird to understand how training translates to fieldwork. ◊ Appreciate the Scout’s role as a safety and communication link.THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 31 ▬

It’s a perfect time to take advantage of your WCA Breeder Referral service.A few things you might like to know about this service. I do not screen inquiries. Instead, that is up to each individual breeder. Breeders have individual preferences for selecting potential homes for their puppies. The greater number of inquiries comes from people wanting a well-bred puppy and some have also done a little research on the breed. The majority of inquiries are from people that do not want to travel far for a pup, though I encourage them to consider greater distances. The majority of inquiries indicate they want to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder. If no one has listed a litter in an area preferred by an inquiry, I give out contacts for any local clubs nearby as well. This service is available to all WCA members. Futurity litters are automatically placed on the list. If your litter is not nominated, simply email your information to me to be placed on the list. Everyone is welcome to notify me as early as pregnancy is confirmed! Your information should include - sire and dam, approximate due date, your city, state, email and phone number. Please send this information to: [email protected] Thank you, and best of luck with your litters!Billie Thompson • (acting) WCA Breeder Referral THE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 44 ▬

Winter Boredom BustersPet Wellness Clinics/Jan 2026Fun Ways to Keep Pets Active Indoors When the snow piles up and the sidewalks turn to ice, cabin fever can hit pets just as hard as it hits people. Fewer walks, shorter days, and chilly temperatures can all lead to restless energy — and maybe a little mischief. The good news? There are plenty of indoor activities for pets that keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching all winter long. Whether you’re looking for ways to keep your dog active in winter or entertain your indoor cat, these winter boredom busters will help your furry friend stay happy, healthy, and mentally sharp until spring returns. Hallway Olympics If outdoor walks are short and snowy, move the fun inside! • Play gentle fetch in a hallway or large room. • Roll tennis balls for cats or smaller dogs. • Hide favorite toys and challenge your pet to find them. • Stack pillows, lay down towels as “balance beams,” or set up low jumps with broomsticks. • Use treats or toys to guide your dog through. These quick bursts of play help release pent-up energy and strengthen your bond. Pet Puzzle Power for Bright Minds Mental stimulation is one of the best forms of pet enrichment during winter. Problem-solving games provide valuable indoor exercise for dogs and cats while keeping boredom at bay. • Try treat-dispensing toys, puzzle feeders, or snuffle mats. • Make your own by placing kibble inside a folded towel or empty box. Learn Something New Cold days are perfect for brushing up on manners or learning a fun new trick. Practice simple commands like stay, shake, or spin, or teach a creative cue like tidy up your toys! Training builds confidence and reinforces the bond between you and your pet, plus, it’s great mental exercise. Cabin Fever, Cat Edition Cats can get restless, too, especially indoor-only felines. • Rotate toys every few days to keep things exciting. • Create a birdwatching station by placing a perch near a window. • Use feather wands, laser toys, or cat tunnels for mini play sessions. These easy indoor cat enrichment ideas provide both exercise and entertainment when outdoor adventures aren’t an option. A Healthy, Happy Winter Starts with You Winter can be long, but it doesn’t have to be boring. With the right mix of movement, mental enrichment, and relaxation, your pets will thrive no matter the temperature outside. Photo: FriedmanTHE WEIMARANER MAGAZINE ~ March 2026 ▬ 49 ▬
