welcome

to tenleytown Main Street

Matthew Frumin Leigh Catherine Miles
Board President Executive Director

As we enter our fourth year, Tenleytown Main Street is proud of what we have accomplished and excited by
the possibilities for the future of our business community. In the past three years we have:

welcomed new businesses and supported legacy businesses, some of which have served this
community for more than 70 years
upgraded storefronts, maintained sidewalks, and initiated a multi-year project to create urban
parks that are community gathering places
marketed Tenleytown’s 150+ businesses through special events and promotional campaigns,
reaching hundreds of thousands across the city each year
celebrated our neighborhood’s creative, family-friendly brand through events like Art All Night
and Tenley WinterFest
advocated on behalf of our businesses to ensure they have the resources to thrive for years to come

Ours is an incredible community with distinctive businesses whose owners join us in being invested in the
Tenleytown neighborhood. It is a privilege to serve them as we seek to fulfill Tenleytown’s potential.

Please join us in the effort to strengthen the business district at the heart of our community. Together we can
make a positive difference for all who live, work, learn, and create in Tenleytown.

- Matthew and Leigh Catherine

OUR MISSION

Tenleytown Main Street is a community-based nonprofit organization that works with
residents and local businesses to strengthen the economic vitality of Tenleytown. We
seek to achieve a business district that is a thriving, walkable, and friendly neighborhood
center that retains its small town feel with up-to-date urban amenities.
Since launching in January 2016, TMS has developed a portfolio of programs designed to
meet the unique needs of the Tenleytown business community, including marketing and
special events, public and urban green space maintenance, small business consulting, and
financial support for physical improvements to commercial buildings. As a welcoming
hub of community life, our Main Street nurtures a vibrant local economy and culture that
can only be found at our own “top of the town.”
Tenleytown Main Street is a Main Street America™ Accredited program and a recognized
leading program among the national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and
communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to
building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development.

OCAL ECONOMY highlights

Pop-up Shop
TMS recruited Femme Fatale DC for a pop-up shop and event space,
featuring 50+ local women makers, creators, and entrepreneurs. The five-
month pop-up filled 8,000 sq ft of vacant retail space at 4620 Wisconsin
Ave., which was empty pending redevelopment as a mixed-use project.
The new Broadcast building, with 146 rental units and 11,000 sq ft of
retail, is slated for completion in 2020.

MARKETING ASSISTANCE
Tenleytown businesses overwhelmingly cite marketing support as a top
requirement for business growth. TMS responded by partnering with the
small business experts at local firm Popcorn & Ice Cream. Participating
businesses received a customized marketing plan, providing a roadmap
for driving new foot traffic to their business and staying engaged with
existing customers.
The new Tenleytown Main Street mobile app connects customers and
businesses with a searchable directory of local businesses, special
offers, and calendar of events – all in the palm of your hand. Businesses
can update and manage their profiles directly through the app, while
customers can quickly find a business to meet their needs.

small business PROFILES
A new video series highlighted the people behind the businesses that
make Tenleytown unique – and encouraged other business owners to
take a look at our commercial district. Part of the “Tenleytown: Open
for Business” initiative, the video series has reached 10,000+ viewers and
will expand in 2019.

improving visu

Urban parks, historic storefronts, walkable streets, and eclectic design are part of
why Tenleytown is an appealing neighborhood. TMS invests in programs that foster
a clean and green business district and make it welcoming and attractive to visitors.

Façade Improvement Program
TMS’s new Façade Improvement Program funds exterior upgrades to improve business visibility
and better engage customers. The National Diving Center (4932 Wisconsin Avenue) and Young’s
Nails (4936 Wisconsin Avenue) benefited from fresh paint; repointed brickwork; new gutters
and downspouts; new or repaired windows, doors, and frames; and new signage and awnings.
Not only do the current businesses look great, but as a result of the upgrades, a vacant retail
bay at 4936 Wisconsin Avenue will welcome a new tenant in 2019. The façade program offers
larger scale upgrades than the TMS Storefront Improvement Project (SIP) small grants, which
continued to help businesses purchase signs, awnings, and windows.

“[I] moved to Tenley in 2001 and have really noticed your organization’s work in the last several years. It has
made a notable positive impact on the feeling of the place.”

URBAN PARK RENEWAL

The renewal of the 110-year-old Fessenden
Park continued as Tenleytown Main Street
piloted new seating as part of a multi-year
effort to redesign the park. Over several months,
community members were invited to test out the
furniture and share feedback on the styles and
colors they preferred. The temporary installation
will inform future permanent upgrades TMS will
begin designing in 2019.
“Thank you Tenleytown Main Street for [this] pilot program so we human beings, who want to
connect to others, can sit & talk to each other. Yes, people still do that & we are so grateful!”
- Molly M.

clean team
Through summer heat and winter
storms, the three-member Wisconsin
Avenue Clean Team works year-
round to keep sidewalks litter-free
and accessible; clean up unsightly
graffiti; and care for more than 300
street trees along the commercial
corridor. Staffed in partnership with
Career Path DC, the Clean Team
also provides skills training and job
opportunities to returning citizens.

TMS produces signature events for all ages that showcase local businesses, celebrate
the unique spirit of Tenleytown, and attract thousands to our shops and restaurants.

bastille day
Fessenden Park became Tenleytown’s own “French Quarter” on July 14 as
TMS’s Friends of Fessenden Park celebrated Bastille Day. Local restaurants
Le Chat Noir and Matisse, which both overlook the park, served crepes and
profiteroles as 150 guests sipped Perrier and Orangina, played the classic
French lawn game pétanque, and enjoyed French-themed crafts and music.
French flags, provided by Tenleytown’s Kengla Flag Company, decorated
the park, adding a pop of red, white, and blue to the lawn.

tenley winterfest
The 6th annual Tenley WinterFest kicked off the holiday
season with a winter restaurant week, Yeti Scavenger Hunt
at local shops, festive window displays, seasonally-themed
music and films, and the Winter Market at Janney. The market
even earned a spot on Curbed DC’s list of the coolest holiday
markets in the city. More than 2,500 people attended Tenley
WinterFest events, which TMS hosted in partnership with 42
community groups and businesses. Participating shops and
restaurants saw increased sales as well as a boost in customer
awareness of their offerings.

“[Tenley WinterFest is] growing in popularity every year and provides a fun
experience for us and the families in the neighborhood.”
– Sullivan’s Toys & Art Supplies

ART ALL NIGHT

The annual Art All Night festival celebrates the visual and performing arts, showcasing the diverse
talents of the city’s creative community. Public and private spaces along Wisconsin Avenue transform
into pop-up galleries and performance stages. Nearly 13,000 festival attendees enjoyed exhibits,
performances, and interactive art experiences from more than 140 artists and performance groups.
Crowds filled local restaurants and shops, leading to record sales at some locations.

“[Art All Night] was an amazingly fun, energetic night that was run so smoothly that everyone has had nothing but good
things to say. I personally had a blast, and so did everyone who came out for the event.”
– Pamela G.

get fit at fessenden
The new Get Fit at Fessenden series highlighted local businesses that
cater to the neighborhood’s active lifestyle. Throughout the spring
and summer, TMS offered yoga, dance, and interval training classes
at Fessenden Park, furthering the goal of making the park a gathering
place for all in the community.
