TMS Annual Report - FY21

Tenleytown Main Street annual report for fiscal year 2021 (October 2020 - September 2021)

ANNUAL REPORT 2021

October 2020 - September 2021

The past year was again filled with challenges for our business community as
the pandemic stretched into its second year. Tenleytown Main Street renewed
its focus on supporting and sustaining local businesses by:

Providing nearly 400 hours of technical assistance to help businesses apply
for grants and loans, develop new marketing strategies, build websites and
e-commerce solutions, and apply for business permits.
Awarding $40,000 in direct business grants to make interior and storefront
improvements, purchase vital business equipment, set up e-commerce
systems, and defray the cost of 3rd party delivery service fees.
Helping local businesses access an additional $2.9 million in financial
assistance and grants.
Launching the Tenley Bucks community gift card to encourage people to
shop, dine, and gift locally, keeping their spending dollars in our community.

As public health conditions improved, we reminded people that Tenleytown is
open for business, welcoming them back with special events. Those ranged
from outdoor fitness classes at Fessenden Park, highlighting local studios, to
the return of Art All Night, which celebrated community, connection, and
renewal through the visual and performing arts.
TMS could not do this work without the hundreds of volunteers and
community members who contribute their time and talents, and who
generously support not only TMS but the more than 200 businesses we serve.
With sincerest gratitude, thank you.
Our business district remains resilient, and we see evidence of the recovery
ahead. This past year, nine new businesses opened. Sidewalks are filling with
residents and students, daytime workers and visitors, shoppers and diners.
However, many businesses continue to face an uphill climb to recovery. TMS
will continue to provide them direct technical and financial support, as well
produce events and promotional campaigns that drive economic activity. I
invite you to join us in our efforts. Together we will foster a vibrant business
district that benefits all who work, live, visit, and study here.

During the spring and summer, Fessenden Park
hosted low-impact fitness classes taught by
instructors from Tenleytown fitness studios,
promoting health and wellness in the community.

After going virtual in 2020, Art All Night
returned live and in-person on September
25. Tenleytown filled with music, dance,
and art as 15,300 festival goers celebrated
this year’s theme of “Community,
Connection, Renewal.” More than 200
visual and performing artists showcased
their talents at 15 local venues.

Tenley Bucks, redeemable exclusively at
Tenleytown shops, restaurants, and salons,
supports local businesses and keep dollars in our
community. Since launching in spring 2021,
community members have purchased more than
$5,000 in these community gift cards.

TMS supported local businesses making
pandemic pivots, from new products to new
ways of doing business. Streateries, like this one
at Brandywine and 42nd streets, and outdoor
dining were a lifeline for many local restaurants.

The 9th annual Tenley After a year of virtual learning,

“Thank you for doing this! Tenleytown Main Street is the best TMS volunteers cared for
and I am so impressed with all you have done this year. It was Fessenden Park, a 115-year-old
a great year despite such lousy circumstances. We liked the park on Wisconsin Avenue, tending
scavenger hunt even better on the app. We did the walking plantings, cleaning park furniture,
tour in Armsleigh Park (we did St. Ann's last year- it was and removing litter each month
fabulous), got takeout from a new local place, checked out from spring through fall.

Welcome back! JTR Jujutsu International gave up
their storefront during the height of the pandemic,
but after a successful temporary pivot to online
classes, the martial arts studio was ready to find a
new permanent home in 2021. TMS proudly
supported their efforts to find a new commercial
space, welcoming them back to Tenleytown in
September 2021.
