Re-Imagining Firkin Crane

Re-imagining Firkin Crane is a grand plan to open the building on all sides and create
state of the art studios, performance and exhibition spaces.

From January through to Easter 2018, phase one of this exciting re-development will
take place. On the ground floor the changes will be spectacular as we develop the
façade of the building to reveal what’s taking place inside by creating a new glazed
entrance and foyer leading to a refurbished Musgrave Theatre with new layout,
upgraded technical facilities and increased seating capacity. The Musgrave Theatre
will also be an exhibition space that is open every day to the public, a place where
people from all sectors of the community can come and experience a wide range
of accessible dance interactive experiences. Improvements in the Smurfit Theatre /
main auditorium will include extending the stage and a new motorised retractable
seating system. The fact that Firkin Crane stands on the site of Shandon Castle built in
circa 1183 and presently is contained within the original exterior walls of the building
designed by Sir George Benson in 1852 remain an important consideration as we
sensitively reveal hidden elements of the heritage building.

During this work Firkin Crane will remain open for business but some elements of our
programme will need to be re-located to alternative facilities locally. Information on this
will be available on our website and social media channels.

: This work is carried out with capital grant aid from the Department of Culture, Heritage
and the Gaeltacht, Cork City Council, and the generosity of the Musgrave Family. The team

Cork City Ballet has been based at Firkin Crane since 1992, Image: Ankie Janssen

CCB promotes and encourages the ethos that ballet is for
everyone. This is achieved by its diversity of programming, which
includes not just the well-loved classics, but also modern and
contemporary choreography, including works specially created
for the company by the Artistic Director Alan Foley, former dancer
with Irish National Ballet – Patricia Crosbie, and Bolshoi-trained
dancer and choreographer Yury Demakov.

Cork Youth Ballet Company was founded in 2015 by Sinead
Murphy, Director Cork School of Dance, and is based at Firkin
Crane. CYBC provides opportunities for young Cork dancers to
train as a company, producing creative and dynamic new dance
works. Company members work with local dance professionals
as well as internationally recognised teachers, choreographers
and dance artists. While performance and production is the
primary aim, the dancers in the company are trained classically
and in alternative dance styles that challenge them and give
them opportunities to develop their own creativity. This training
supplements the dancers’ work in their own private dance
schools, while committing to developing and subsequently
maintaining high artistic qualities and standards, through focusing
on the dancer’s individual potential.

The company of dancers is drawn from Colaiste Stiofáin Noafa
Dance Course, Cork School of Dance, Lucy French School of
Dance, UCC, and Montford College of Performing Arts. With
ongoing support from Firkin Crane the company rehearses every
Wednesday night.

Croí Glan Integrated Dance Company is a professional

for the company.

In November 2017 as part of Jess Curtis/Gravity’s Intercontinental
