Helping Teachers Make A Difference® After three rounds of the game, turn over the
game mat and play three more rounds. This
repeated play exposes students to a greater
variety of words and also helps them to build
words more quickly. The same prefixes and
suffixes appear on the two sides of each
Game Mat, but they are in different positions.
This challenges students to use their word
knowledge instead of relying solely on affix
position. Repeated play also makes the game
more interesting, because each round offers
the possibility of scoring more points.
Extension
After playing the game, have students record
the words they have made using each prefix or
suffix. Discuss how the words with a common
affix are alike. Have students brainstorm
additional words that can combine with each
prefix or suffix.

Tic-TAKE-Toe™ Prefixes and Suffixes
Tic-TAKE-Toe Prefix and Suffix Game
2 students or 4 students if playing in pairs
Object: To build words using affixes in order to fill
three spaces in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row
with X or O Cards.
Materials: 1 Game Mat, 1 corresponding set of
Word Cards, 10 X Cards, 10 O Cards, 1 Scorecard,
1 Dry-Erase Marker
Directions:
1. Place the game mat between the players. Shuffle
the Word Cards, and place them face down in front
of the game mat. Give X Cards to one player and O
Cards to the other. The player with the X Cards
goes first.
2. Player 1 turns over a Word Card, reads it, and places
it next to an affix to make a new word. Player 1 then
places his or her X Card in the box.
3. Player 2 turns over a Word Card, reads it, and
places it next to an affix to make another new word.
If Player 2 decides to place the Word Card in a
space already occupied by an X Card, he or she can
stack it on top of the existing card to make a new
word, take the X Card, and place his or her O Card in
the box.
4. Players take turns in this way.
5. If a player places a Word Card in a space that he or
she has already occupied with his own X or O Card,
the player stacks the Word Card but does not place
another X or O Card in the box.
6. The game is over when one player gets three X’s or
O’s in a row.
7. Players tally their points on the Scorecard. The
player with fewer points goes first in the next round.
8. Play three rounds on each side of the game mat,
then tally the points at the end. The player with the
most points is the winner.
