Welcome to the Hope International University family. I want to tell you how happy we are that you have chosen HIU to pursue your degree. Whether you are a recent graduate from high school, or transferring from another institution, you are in for an amazing experience. Our intimate environment fosters deep connections and friendships that can last a lifetime. Founded in 1928, HIU exists to serve the Church and impact the world for Christ. We prepare men and women to make a difference in society by leading humbly. We expect our graduates to impact society in profound ways no matter their major or career choices. My wife, Leslie, and I are both alums of HIU. We also both earned our Master’s Degrees here. We are all in. In fact, we met here. One of the things we both have always appreciated about our experience here was the opportunity to get to know faculty and staff at a very deep level. The faculty, advisors, staff, R.A.s, and Student Government peer leaders are committed to getting to know you, and to serve you. The most important piece of advice I have for you as you begin your journey is to go to every NSO event that is scheduled. Remember that every new student is anxious about starting this chapter of their life and that at least half the group is shy. So let me be even more bold: pretend you are not shy. Trust me, it works. Go to everything, initiate conversations, and have fun. If there is anything you need, please contact the Student Affairs team or your Academic Advisor, and we will get you what you need. Again, welcome to Hope. We are Royals! Welcome Dr. Paul Alexander A Letter from our President HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Letter from our President / 2

In one of my favorite movies, the Emperor's Club (2002), the headmaster of a prestigious boarding school is giving his opening speech to a fresh, new crop of incoming students. "Finis origine pendet" he declares to them in Latin, or "the end depends upon the beginning." He wisely understood that beginnings matter. In their book, The Outrageous Idea of Academic Faithfulness, Opitz and Melleby suggest that "expectations have profound implications on what we actually find at college" (2007). Our expectations of what college will be like can powerfully shape our lived experiences by directing our focus, energy, and activities. You probably expect that you will attend classes and do homework. If you are an athlete, you understand that much of your time will be committed to practice and improving your game. You may even expect to make a few friends along the way, especially if you plan to live on campus. What you may not expect is that God is actively at work in your life, right now, drawing you into a deeper relationship with Him and paving the way toward a good future. We are more likely to meet God, to be further shaped into His image, and to embrace the good future he has prepared for us when we expect this of our college experience. May your beginning be bursting with anticipation for what God has in store for you this year!
