Stuart was an Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music where he studied piano, organ and
conducting before spending most of his teaching career in London schools, as a Director of Music in
three of them, before moving into school management roles. He retired from his post as Second
Master/Senior Deputy Head at the John Lyon School in Harrow at the end of 2015 and now teaches
part time, combining this with performing work. He has taught at the Junior Department of the RCM
and been a member of the RCM Union where his focus was on securing funding for undergraduates to
have access to fine instruments to help them launch their professional careers. For many years Stuart
was also a part time lecturer and tutor at the University of London Institute of Education helping in the
training of music teachers at the start of their careers.
