• Regular monitoring and maintenance are very Risk Analysis
important to ensure the service life of the tunnels.

• The main aim of the research is therefore to develop a
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for tunnel Visual Inspection & NDE Analysis & FEM:
Prediction of Remaining
Tests: Systematic
lining and also to predict its remaining service life. Guideline & Rating Life
• The program is divided into four main projects
comprising of visual inspection, prediction of service
life, video-based image risk analysis for tunnel lining
and safety and developing SHM system for real-time
monitoring.

Concrete Repair Technique using Pre-Tensioning Steel

Straps Confinement

Researcher:

Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ma Chau Khun

The repairing of damaged columns has become more
important since the failure of damage column contributed
to the serious consequences in structural stability. Steel
strapping tensioning technique (SSTT) is the new technique
to repair concrete.

Features

• Effective for HSC

• Customizable layer and spacing
Benefits

• Pre-tensioning confinement will provide effective lateral
confining pressure
• Enhance the strength, stiffness and ductility

• Prevents sudden failure
Cost effective and sustainable

• Use low cost recycle steel straps

28

Structure Strengthening using Pre-Tensioned Steel

Angle Confinement

Researcher:

Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ma Chau Khun

The strengthening of non-seismic designed structure is vital
to be implemented in seismic prone area to ensure the
safety of lives and properties. Pre-Tensioned Steel Angle
Confinement (PTSAC) is the new techniques to
strengthening structure

Features

• Effective to be implemented in real structure

• Fast and easy to retrofit structure
Benefits

• The retrofitting strategy able to increase the seismic
behavior of deficient structure
• Strong column-weak beam design is satisfied

Cost effective and sustainable

• Less labour required

• Minimise the disruption of existing structure

29
