REGIONAL CLUBS
Capital Region Flat-Coated Retriever Club, CRFCRC
CRFCRC members have had a busy year and a busier fall. In addition to our field training days
and a double hunt test, we were able to hold our Supported Entry over Thanksgiving weekend!
Our members were very happy to be able to get together again, and the ring was in a spacious
building without any crowding.
Fifty-seven of our members earned 171 titles during 2021. Due to continued COVID issues, we
were unable to hold our annual holiday party and membership meeting for the second year in a
row. We are hoping that our spring Supported at MD Sporting Dog (March 5 and 6) can be a
great and safe celebration, and we can distribute our beautiful rosettes. We have two FASTCAT
events scheduled for this year, on Wednesday June 15, and Monday October 10. We also have
a busy field calendar this year, with monthly training sessions beginning in March and
continuing through December (may the weather be kind to us!). A WC/WCX is scheduled for
October 9.
Our election of officers was simplified this year, as the nominating committee decided that in
this time of uncertainty, it was best to stay with incumbent officers. Thanks to all who stay
committed to our board.
Janet Boss, CRFCRC President
Flat-Coated Retriever Club of Illinois, FCRCI
Out of an abundance of caution, we cancelled our agility trial for 2021. We were able to hold
the rest of our events for the year, a live flyer event on a lovely April day, a well-attended
Supported Entry/Conformation show in July, and a WC/WCX. Sadly, our Annual meeting /pizza
party was held via Zoom. We are hoping for a healthy and safe 2022.
For 2022, we are planning on holding an agility trial January 22 & 23, Heartworm clinic, live
flyer/training day April 2, a Supported Entry early in July at Moraine KC, West Bend, WI.

Northeast Flat-Coated Retriever Club, NEFCRC
Greetings for 2022 from the Northeast Flat-Coated Retriever Club!
The NEFCRC sponsored five training sessions during 2021 at West Thompson Lake Park in North
Grosvenordale, CT. and Nod Brook WMA in Simsbury, CT. However, two of the sessions were
cancelled due to flooding or unsafe conditions at the training areas. Nevertheless, those
sessions that were held, attracted participants with puppies and adult dogs or who wanted to
learn about field activities.
We encouraged participants with puppies or dogs with no swimming experience to introduce
their pups to the water under safe and controlled conditions at each of the training areas under
the supervision of our instructors.
We also encouraged the inexperienced dogs and handlers to participate in the guided retrieving
activities.
Also, we offered to introduce those handler-teams with inexperienced puppies or dogs to
‘birds’ if they wished.
We encouraged and demonstrated how “new” teams might integrate these activities with the
basic or advanced training activities that they are using with their dogs from other performance
areas.
We are very grateful to Annie Catterson, Christine McClure, Bunny Millikin, and Mary Peterson
and Lorna Godsill for sharing their instruction expertise and for directing the sessions at West
Thompson and Nod Brook. Moreover, thank you Sally Nettleton-Smilas and Nancy Triou for
monitoring the “flood conditions” throughout the summer at Nod Brook to assure that our
sessions could be safely held.
For 2022, the NEFCRC field committee is in the planning process to hold at least four training
sessions and a 2022 WC/WCX. More information will be available in future issues of the FCRCA
Magazine.

OBITUARIES
CHCG Shasta’s Western Samurai JH CA DS WC HOF “Ronin” left us to cross the Rainbow Bridge
on July 21, 2021 at the age of 12 ½ years. He was the dog that brought us back to competing in
the conformation ring and introduced us to field work. Everyone has that special dog and Ronin
was ours. He loved when people applauded for him in the conformation ring and especially
loved the chicken used as bait. Ronin was introduced to the field at the age of 8 and earned his
JH at 10 years old. He loved to swim and often took his duck for a swim even if it was a land
mark. He knew how to find water! When traveling cross country, he was introduced to fireflies
and spent hours looking for them and jumping to catch them. He is missed terribly by his
humans and two adult pups. Goodbye our sweet Ronin. You left deep pawprints on our hearts.

Education
Dr Rebecca Wilkes will present a seminar on Progress in Diagnosis of Tick-Borne Diseases on Friday, June 10,
2022 at the Holiday Inn Purdue Ft Wayne (host hotel).
Vector-borne (tick-borne) diseases can cause serious, even life-threatening, disease in any dog, including Flat-
Coated Retrievers, whether in suburban households or out in the field. Accurate diagnosis of these diseases is
fundamental for correct treatment, but can be very difficult. Dr. Wilkes will be presenting information about
vector-borne diseases, including a summary of the bacteria that cause these diseases and an explanation for why
they are difficult to diagnose. She will present her new method for detecting the disease-causing organisms
associated with vector-borne diseases.
Dr. Rebecca Wilkes obtained her DVM from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in
2001 and her PhD in Comparative and Experimental Medicine from the University of Tennessee in 2007, with
emphases in virology and molecular biology. Dr. Wilkes is board certified by the American College of
Veterinary Microbiologists in both virology and bacteriology/mycology. She currently serves as the section
head for molecular and virology lab sections at the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, in the College of
Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University, and is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative
Pathobiology. Dr. Wilkes has an extensive background in molecular test development, and her most recent work
has involved design of targeted next-generation sequencing panels for detection of infectious diseases of
animals for syndromic testing. Rebecca is married to her college sweetheart, Nathan Wilkes, and they enjoy
spending time with their two 2-legged children and three 4-legged children (2 dogs and 1 cat).

We have some very special trophies and beautiful rosettes that we are re-purposing from the Covid Texas

dog did.
Trophy donations that were made for Texas that were not refunded will be carried over to the Ft Wayne
National.
There will be a page on the website to donate to the trophy fund to continue to help offset the costs. You are
welcome to have your donation in honor or memory of a special dog, person or something that is important to
you and your flat coat family. These will be included in the catalog. More info will be in the next specialty
insert as to where and how to donate. We look forward to seeing many of you next year.
Fundraisers/Auctions/Merchandise

Bruesewitz that was made for the Texas Specialty. If you paid for a ticket already, it is still good and is
transferred over to this raffle. Take a look at it on the website as color is needed to do it justice. Since this is
a one of a kind, tickets are limited to 150 tickets at $25 each and they may be purchased online at the
Specialty Store, or if any are left, at the Specialty. To date 49 tickets have been purchased. You do not need
to be present to win. We can mail it to you. This is truly a one-of-a-kind item!

OFA and Gonioscopy Eye Exams
Thursday, June 9, 2022 from 9:00 am- 4:30 pm
Dr. Rachel Davis, DVM, MS, DACVO Animal Eye Clinic, Westfield, IN.
Cost: $40 CAER $55 Gonioscopy $95 both exams same dog
OFA forms will be available at the exam. Please arrive 20 minutes before your appointment to dilate
the eyes and fill out paperwork.
OFA CAER exam can be used to establish a baseline and future exams identify any changes within
the eyes. OFA CAER exams involve drops and a waiting period of approximately 20 minutes for the
eyes to dilate sufficiently to do the exam.
Gonioscopy exams are painless and check the drainage angles of your dog’s eyes. It utilizes
anesthetic drops which do not take as long to work.
Gonioscopy and OFA exams can be done on the same dog. If you want both the Gonioscopy and
the OFA Eye Exams, it will involve 2 sets of drops with a short waiting time between exams. If both
exams are done, gonioscopy must be done first, before the eyes are dilated.
Please allow approximately 1 hour of time if you want both exams done.
Echocardiogram/OFA Cardiac Clearance Clinic
Thursday June 9, 2022 from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
Dr. Daniel Hogan DVM, DACVIM-Cardiology
Cost: Auscultation Exam $60 Echocardiogram Exam $250
Auscultation Exam Cardiac auscultation is the most expedient and cost-effective method for
identifying Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in dogs. While there are exceptions, virtually all common
congenital heart defects are associated with the presence of a cardiac murmur. Consequently, it is
recommended that cardiac auscultation be the primary screening method for initial identification of
CHD. This test is performed using a stethoscope.
Echocardiogram Exam A more extensive view of the canine heart performed with a Doppler. The
purpose of an echocardiogram is to assess for functional cardiac diseases, such as dilated
cardiomyopathy. This test is painless and non-invasive.

DNA Blood Draw Clinic • CHIC DNA Repository
Dates: Wednesday June 8, 2022 and Friday June 10, 2022 from 8:00 -12:00
Cost: $5 (National Specialty only) *
The Animal Health Trust (AHT) in the UK where previously collected Flat-Coated Retriever blood
samples are stored closed in 2020. All donated samples are currently being stored at the Kennel
Club University of Cambridge. In an effort to increase the number of DNA blood samples for Flat-
Coated Retrievers and make it easier for researchers to obtain these samples, DNA samples will be
stored at the AKC Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) DNA repository. The major advantage of
using CHIC is that the approval process is streamlined for research funded by either the AKC Canine
Health Foundation or the Morris Animal Foundation.
Your participation in this effort is extremely important and we urge everyone at the National to donate
their dog’s DNA blood samples, including dogs that have already donated to AHT, to support a
healthier future for our Flat-Coated Retrievers.
Please print out, fill in and bring the required DNA Repository Application and Health Survey
form with you to the clinic (www.ofa.org/about/dna-repository).
*CHIC is offering a discounted rate for samples collected at the Specialty, $10 per sample/per dog.
The FCR Foundation has agreed to pay half of that fee and therefore the cost to owners is only $5.
The FCR Foundation will reimburse $5 of the $20 fee for samples submitted after the Specialty.
Genetic Diversity Testing
Date: Friday, June 10, 2022
No Preregistration- Walk-ins only
Cost: $80
In conjunction with BetterBred and UC Davis VGL, we will again be offering Genetic Diversity Testing.
BetterBred will be offering a $10 discount to accompany the $25 rebate by the FCR Foundation. Final
cost $45. Members not attending the Specialty will also be eligible for this discount.
*All health screenings and DNA Blood Draw will be dependent on getting enough volunteers to manage each
clinic. FCRSA members are encouraged to volunteer for even an hour or two. Please consider volunteering to
hold dogs, help with paperwork, or draw blood.*
