Milestone Idea Card
‘I can explain how to cross the road safely’
If you go out a walk and pass any traffic lights ask your
child what each colour means. Ask your child when is it
safe to cross the road, and what each colour means.
Also ask your child if there are no traffic lights what
they would do to check it is safe to cross the road.
Reinforcing the 3 rules Stop, Look and Listen before
safely crossing the road.
You can make a pretend road and set of traffic lights at
home, using some paper or cardboard and practise this
skill through role play.
Another favourite activity at nursery is to play the
traffic light game. When someone says green, they can
run around. When someone says amber they jog on the
spot and when someone says red they stop. This is a
great game for all of the family and also develops listening
skills. Why not take it in turns to give the instructions.
You can also sing this nursery rhyme with your child to
help them remember what to do when the traffic light is
green and what to do when it is red.
Twinkle twinkle traffic light
(sung to “Twinkle Little Star”)
Twinkle twinkle traffic light,
Standing on the corner bright.
When it’s green it’s time to go,
When it’s red its stop you know.
Twinkle twinkle traffic light,
Standing on the corner bright.
