In the first round, Mike Foster-Atkins faced Anne-Marie Tinone, Mike emerging victorious with an 11-9 win. However, in the second round, Mike was narrowly defeated by Michelle Green, 10-11. Carlinda Roberts also faced an early exit, losing 6-11 to Pana Jahanmard. James Noble had a promising start, defeating Rene Koome 11-5 and Ivo Žarnić 11-6, before capitulating to Craig Fairbanks. Craig, after defeating Terry Marston in the first round 11-3 and receiving a bye in the second, bested James Noble in the third round. He then edged out AJ Marquette 11-10 in the semis to advance to the final. The final, held at Galbraith's Alehouse, saw Craig face Julie Hillis in a challenging match. The game was intensely competitive, coming down to the final point. At 10-10, Julie held a 24-point anchor while Craig was bearing off his checkers, with his 6-point clear, two checkers on his 5-point, and his 4-point clear, along with a cluster of checkers on the 2-point and 3-point, and only 4 or 5 checkers off. Julie rolled a 65 and moved 24/13. Craig then rolled a 42, hitting 5/1* as the 4 was forced, and played 5/3 with the 2.Julie had a formidable 6-prime on the opposite side of the board, with her 1 and 2 points open and a couple of checkers controlling the outfield. The match hinged on Julie rolling a 1 from the bar to hit Craig’s blot. The outcome was determined by a single roll of the dice. Julie rolled a 54, concluding the game.Craig continued to bear off, while Julie raced around the board, but catching up proved too challenging. On a different day, had Julie rolled a 1 from the bar, the outcome might have been in her favor. As Craig remarked, \"What a finish. A fabulous match. Well played Julie, thanks\"2026 Auckland Backgammon Tournament Results:First: Craig Fairbanks—Shore City Rollers Backgammon Club IncSecond: Julie Hillis Third: AJ Marquette - Auckland BG [email protected] Shore City Rollers Backgammon Club Inc Wednesday, 4 March 2026https://shorecityrollers.wixsite.com/backgammon-clubThe Kiwi - Gold Partner2026 Auckland Backgammon Tournament final: Julie Hillis (left) Craig Fairbanks (right) shake hands, ready for battle.
[email protected] Shore City Rollers Backgammon Club Inc Wednesday, 4 March 2026Thursday Takapuna Backgammon from 6:30pm Hobby Lords Takapuna, All welcome, Non-members welcomeA Time-Limited Afternoon In the competitive arenas of gaming and sports, tournament formats are pivotal in shaping both participant engagement and spectator experience. Among the diverse array of formats, the four-game time-limited blind draw tournament emerges as a particularly innovative model, blending excitement, fairness, and efficiency. By randomly pairing players and imposing a strict time limit, this format cultivates a dynamic competitive environment that promotes participation, collaboration, and skill development.Waitangi Day provided an ideal occasion to implement the fourgame time-limited blind draw tournament. The day began with sunny and hot weather, tempting many to the beach. However, as the sun reached its zenith, players arrived to participate. Opponents were indicated by numbers on drawn cards, requiring players to locate their adversaries for each of the four matches. The tournament commenced at 1pm, initially in a quiet atmosphere, but as the afternoon progressed, a social and light-hearted ambience enveloped the event. The short format—four matches to 5 points or a 1-hour time limit—facilitated camaraderie among participants. Without a traditional live chart, excitement mounted as scorecards were collected only after players completed all four matches. Once the final card was submitted and scores tallied, the podium finishers were announced. Although no player won all four matches, four individuals achieved three victories: Carl Dell, Morty, Chris Taylor, and James Anderson. Carl finished in fourth place, Chris Taylor secured third, and a mere two \"points against\" differentiated second from first. James, with 3 wins, 17 points for and 12 points against, claimed second place, while Morty, with 3 wins, 17 points for and 10 points against, ascended to the top of the podium.Carl faced a challenging start, losing his first-round match (0-5) to Miranda Starck. Chris was defeated (0-5) by the eventual winner, Morty, in the third round. Both James and Morty experienced losses in the final round of the day; James was defeated (2-5) by Anne-Marie Tinone, while Morty fell (2-5).to Carl.Jennifer Jameson had a difficult day, losing all four matches, including dropping a “Backgammon” against Miranda Starck. However, her optimism shone through as she concluded the day positively by winning the \"mystery place getter\" prize, which included a cash reward.Overall, the tournament was another success for the Shore City Rollers Backgammon Club. The format, which allowed all players to participate in every round and be present for the prize-giving ceremony, was well-received and is certainly one to be repeated.Waitangi Day Tournament Results:First Place: Mortez (Morty) Hosseini (3 Wins, 17 points for, 10 points against, 0 Backgammons and 1 Gammon)Second Place: James Anderson - Shore City Rollers (3 Wins, 17 points for, 12 points against, 0 Backgammons and 1 Gammon)Third Place: Chris Taylor - Shore City Rollers (3 Wins, 15 points for, 9 points against, 0 Backgammons and 2 Gammons)Mystery Place Getter: Jennifer Jameson - Shore City Rollers (drawn from the bottom half of finishers)Tournament Organiser Terry Moverley (left) with Waitangi Day Tournament winner Mortez (Morty) Hosseini (right). It may have been a short notice tournament but that didn't stop a class field assembling for a full on afternoon of play.

[email protected] Shore City Rollers Backgammon Club Inc Wednesday, 4 March 2026Thursday Takapuna Backgammon from 6:30pm Hobby Lords Takapuna, All welcome, Non-members welcomeLady Luck & Success!!! On Sunday, February 22, The Good Home Birkenhead hosted what may just be Auckland's, if not New Zealand's, first Women's Open Tournament in recent years, and it was nothing short of spectacular! This brilliant event was the brainchild of Shore City Roller Carlinda Roberts, with invaluable support from the Shore City Rollers Backgammon Club, who contributed to the prize money and provided amazing volunteers.Sixteen incredible women gathered, bringing diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience, some travelling from as far as Pukekohe and including Shore City Rollers Anne-Marie Tinone, Princess Montano and Jennifer Jameson. The competition was electrified by the vibrant presence of several Iranian ladies, whose cultural flair added a delightful twist to the friendly atmosphere. It was an afternoon filled with laughter, mingling, and a shared passion for backgammon, all in pursuit of the coveted $100 top prize. The tournament featured a thrilling 16-player Main Event knockout draw, with 5-point games that kept even the most seasoned players on their toes while offering newcomers a fair shot. First-round losers moved to the plate knockout, with the chance to enjoy a friendly game or two afterwards. Advancing through the first round of the Main Event were Afsoon Ahovan (5-3), Julie Hillis (5-3), Sheri Javadian (5-3), Princess Montano (5-1), Erika Lackey-Ruwald (5-4), Sepiideh Aghaeipour (5-2), Manuela Garcia (5-3), and Jennifer Jameson (5-2).The second round delivered a stunning upset as Shore City Rollers' Jennifer fell (1-5) to Manuela. Erika triumphed over Sepideh (5-3), while on the opposite side of the draw, Julie edged out Afsoon (5-3), and Sheri defeated Princess (5-1).In the semifinals, Julie continued her impressive streak, overcoming Sheri (5-2), while Manuela secured her spot in the final, defeating Erika (5-2).In the thrilling 7-point final match between Julie and Manuela, Julie's experience truly stood out, securing a solid (7-2) victory. Meanwhile, Sheri clinched third place with an impressive (7-2) win over Erika.Over in the Plate, the first round saw wins from Leila Rahim (5-2), Winnie Mercader (5-0), Anne-Marie Tinone in a nail-biter (5-4), and Niaz Farahani (5-1). In the semis, Anne-Marie defeated Niaz (5-2), and Leila did the same to Winnie with the same score. The final showdown featured local favourite Anne-Marie against Leila. Anne-Marie, determined to overcome recent setbacks, charged into the final match of the Plate and emerged victorious with a (5-2) win, earning some well-deserved cash to celebrate her triumph. While cash prizes were up for grabs, Carlinda made sure every participant left with a special memento to remember the day. Despite some initial scepticism about the need for an exclusive Women’s Tournament, the success of the event on Sunday, February 22, clearly showed there's a demand and a rightful place for it in the backgammon calendar.
