Frederick Irwin
Anglican School

A school of the Anglican Schools Commission (Inc.)

PROSPECTUS

26 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
1991 - 2017

Frederick Irwin Anglican School is one of the oldest Independent schools in the Peel Region. The School opened in Feb-
ruary 1991 with 175 students and in 2017 has over 1500 students.

The School is a co-educational, Kindergarten to Year 12 day school, serving Mandurah, Rockingham, Pinjarra, Waroona
and surrounding districts. It is located on a 17 hectare site bounded by Oakmont Avenue and Gordon Road, Mandurah.

The School Council, comprising representatives of the Anglican Church, parents and the community, set the strategic
direction of the School and is responsible for its overall development and management. The Principal is responsible
for the operations of the School and reports regularly to School Council. The Business Manager is the Secretary to the
School Council. Frederick Irwin is one of fourteen schools of the Anglican Schools Commission (Inc).

The School grounds and facilities have developed considerably since foundation, with the most recent additions of the
Year 7 Transition Centre and the Rush Chapel, which was completed in July 2016.

The School has continually aimed to improve and provide excellent facilities to further student academic, cultural,
sporting and musical opportunities within the School.

SCHOOL MOTTO AND CREST

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE is from
John’s Gospel Chapter 8 v.31-32.
“If you hold to my teaching you are really my
disciples. Then you will know the truth and
the truth will set you free”

SCHOOL AND CHURCH

Frederick Irwin is located in the Diocese of
Bunbury but is not affiliated with any particular
Anglican parish; however, links are maintained

with parishes from which the School draws
students. All students attend Christian Studies
lessons and Christian values are stressed in all

areas of the curriculum.

The Christian ethos is the foundation of school
life and a Chaplain is employed full time in the
School to encourage students to be thoughtful

and considerate of others, respectful of
differences and aware of their own personal

worth as individuals.

Worship is given great importance, not only
in formal School Assemblies, which are held
regularly and include Anglican observances, but
also in smaller groups and in innovative ways

which appeal to younger children and
adolescents, so that it is a natural and
enjoyable part of the life of the school
community. The School Chapel is available

for prayer and quiet contemplation.

PASTORAL CARE AND
THE HOUSE SYSTEM

Pastoral Care underpins all that we do at
Frederick Irwin, and as such the School

recognises and respects the individuality of
each child by requiring each teacher to be

charged with pastoral care.

Before a child starts at the School he/she is
allocated to a House. The six (6) Houses are:

ARNOLD (Teal) BARRETT (Purple)
ELLIS (Marl Grey) GORDON (Green)
JAMIESON (Blue)
ROSE (Red)

In the Primary School, the Head of Primary,
Deputy Head of Primary and each class teacher

take pastoral care responsibility for the
students and are assigned to a particular House.
House Coordinators are responsible for organising

House Activities within the Primary School.

In Secondary School, each student is a
member of a House Group which is assigned
its own teacher. The House Group meets each

morning and ideally the same teacher will
remain with the group for much of their

secondary schooling. Heads of House have
pastoral responsibility for each House, in which

their role is to provide support in all aspects

of a student’s life at school by helping them

to achieve academically whilst overseeing their

social and emotional health and well-being, and
to be the contact person for parents to discuss

any concerns regarding their children.

The Principal and Deputy Principals also
undertake pastoral care within their role.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Student leadership, mentoring and
providing positive role models are important
in all aspects of our School.

In Primary School, each House has two House
Captains, a boy and a girl from Year 6. Year 6
students also have the opportunity to become
Junior Councillors through the City of
Mandurah, representing the School through
leadership and governance workshops.

In the Secondary School, our senior students
in Year 12 can be selected as School Prefects
or House Seniors. They provide support and
leadership throughout the School and also to
their House through House Councils.

Year 11 students can be selected as House
Assistants in support of the House System.
Selected Year 11 students also provide
support and leadership to our Year 7 students
as Peer Support Leaders.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ACCESS

With a strong emphasis on responsible and
eSmart behaviour online to enable
students in becoming good 21st Century
citizens, Frederick Irwin staff and students are
encouraged to apply new technologies to the
curriculum, personal study behaviours and
classroom activities.

Primary students have access to SmartBoards
in every class, iPads which are incorporated
into lessons, and specialised Digital
Technology classes.

With the introduction of the Bring Your Own
Device programme, Secondary students are
able to access workable documents, email
teachers, monitor their homework and
assessments, and research their assignments
while in class. Students also attend
‘CyberSafe’ interactive lessons to complement
their online knowledge and behaviour.

Additionally, parents of students at the School
are encouraged to download the free School
Skoolbag App, which sends out alerts and
notices in real time. The Parent Portal,
accessible through the Frederick Irwin
website, is available to submit online
Absentee Forms, Update Contact Details
and pay Term Fees.

As Digital Technologies continually improve,
Frederick Irwin aims to stay at the
forefront of school technology innovation, to
the benefit of all students, staff and parents.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

SPORTING
Frederick Irwin maintains a strong commitment

to providing the opportunity for students to
represent their school and participate in sport

in both local and Inter-School competitions.
One of the goals of the School is to provide all
students with the opportunity to participate in
sport, have some fun, be active, develop their

sporting skills whatever their previous
experience and partake in some success.

The School is also focused on providing
students with a pathway that supports their

achievement of excellence in their chosen
sport, recognising that through participation

in quality sports experiences, students can
develop personal skills related to commitment,

determination, perseverance, support,
encouragement and resilience. Participation
in a Frederick Irwin team demands exemplary

conduct and sportsmanship.

CULTURAL
Cultural experiences are a fundamental part

of Frederick Irwin which help our students
to grow as observant and thoughtful young

adults.

In Primary, students have the
opportunity to participate in programmes such
as Opti-Minds, Robotics Club and BeeBots, the

Primary School Newspaper, Chess Club,
Extension Challenges.

Secondary Students also have the opportunity
to embark on Service Learning Pilgrimages, as

well as curriculum based and extra-curricular
national and international excursions such as

the Ski Trip to Jindabyne, the Japanese
Exchange Trip and the New York and

Washington DC HASS and Mathematics Journey.

MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE
Music and the Arts are an integral part of

Frederick Irwin that includes a holistic
approach to teaching. Music and Performance

are learning areas in which students are
engaged from Kindergarten to Year 12, and we

strive to foster this engagement.

Opportunities including Tuition, Choir, the Year
3 Musical, Whole School Performances, Music
Evenings, Concert Bands, Chamber Concerts,
ATAR Drama and General Drama Productions,

International Musician Performances, plus
many more, allow students to demonstrate
their own abilities within the School’s Oakmont

Theatre and Performing Arts Centre.

CURRICULUM

A school’s curriculum is the total of all activities,
both formal and informal, which take place inside
and outside the classroom, and before and after
the hours of instruction.

Kindergarten to Year 2
The Early Learning pedagogy encompasses
intentional teaching through play and is based on
the Walker Learning Approach which is an
Australian-designed, developmentally appropriate
pedagogy that embraces the concept of the
‘whole child’. The Western Australian Curriculum,
available through the School Curriculum and
Standards Authority, underpins all the explicit
teaching across all Learning Areas.

Years 3 - 6 Engagement Matters
Engagement Matters is a personalised learning
model that continues to develop and foster the
key principles of the Walker Learning Approach
across the middle and upper years of the Primary
School (Years 3 – 6). It encompasses developmentally
appropriate practices to continue to engage
students in their learning and to develop the skills
necessary for 21st Century learning.

For Secondary students the goal is to provide a
broad general education. The following areas and
activities form the curriculum though the list is
not exhaustive:

Christian Studies, English, Mathematics,
Humanities and Social Sciences, Home
Economics, Digital Technologies, Design and
Technology, Music, Drama, Japanese, Art, Health
and Physical Education and Outdoor Education.

In Senior Secondary, a wide range of WACE and
VET courses are offered to prepare students
effectively for University study, TAFE and
employment.

There is a variety of out-of-classroom
activities such as music and choir, sport, drama,
camps and excursions.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

All subjects use a variety of assessment types -
such as written assessments and tests, folios of
work, individual projects and group activities,
and oral presentations - with the emphasis
varying from subject to subject.

The information gathered by assessment will
be formally communicated to parents on two
occasions during the year, with detailed reports
provided at the end of Terms 2 and 4. Years 3-7
parents are also invited to attend Learning
Journeys throughout the year.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Frederick Irwin has a commitment to
academic and musical excellence and

achievement.

The awarding of Academic and Music
Performance Scholarships for students
entering Years 7 and 11 is an expression of

this commitment.

Scholarship information and registration can
be found online on the Frederick Irwin
website throughout the year.

PARENTAL PARTICIPATION

Parents, on accepting an offer of a place for
their son or daughter, take on shared

responsibility with the School to achieve its
spiritual and educational goals.

The staff will, from time to time, call upon
parents to assist in a wide variety of ways. It

is essential that all parents participate in the
programme of practical support for the

School. Active support is basic to having and
holding a place in the School. This is both a

precondition and a continuing condition of
enrolment.

A compulsory Fund Raising Levy of $20
(including GST) per family per term is billed

on the School Fee Account.

SCHOOL BUILDING FUND

The School has established a School Building
Fund to which parents are encouraged to
donate. These funds are used to provide

additional facilities e.g. The Rush Chapel, The
Year 7 Transition Centre.

The fund is approved by the Australian
Taxation Office and therefore all donations

over $2 are eligible tax deductions.

Enquiries regarding the School Building Fund
should be made to the Business Manager.
