KING ECGBERT SCHOOL PROSPECTUS 2024 SIXTH FORM

You only pass through sixth form once, so it’s vital you choose the right one. At King E c g b e rt S c h o o l , w e a r e h i g h l y experienced at supporting students through the sixth form year in and year out, and we are rightly proud of the reputation we have grown over decades and the trusted academic performance our experienced teachers deliver. We see the sixth form as the pinnacle of our work with students. Across our school we talk about our ‘ERA’ values: academic Excellence, showing Respect to everyone and having clear Aspirations for life after school. These values are lived every day and role modelled to others by our sixth form students. From day one we treat our sixth formers as adults to prepare them for university and employment. They no longer wear uniform and they manage their own time when not in timetabled sessions. When our sixth formers leave, and most go to university, they tell us how happy they were with the choice of sixth form they made and how well it set them up for their university years and the independence that requires. Because of our focus on academic excellence, they take with them superb examination grades which open up many doors for them. But they take so much more away than academic knowledge. WELCOME MR PAUL HAIGH HEADTEACHER 3

Thanks to their wider experiences of enrichment, leadership, a tutorial programme and expert careers guidance they progress to great universities - we provide highfliers with additional support in the curriculum to successfully apply to Oxbridge, medicine, veterinary science and dentistry. They talk also about how well they were cared for by the pastoral team who helped them achieve their best no matter what life threw at them in the years between adolescence and adulthood. We are proud of our broad and inclusive curriculum and entry requirements that are genuine drivers of social mobility in our community. Many of our students who go on to university are the first in their family to do so and then become the first to begin professional managerial careers. Through our respect value, our students are charged with the mission to leave school and go on achieve great things, and do nothing less than to make the world a better place. We hope you choose to join us and live out your aspirations at King Ecgbert School Sixth Form. HAPPY TO HAVE YOU AT KES 6 A warm welcome to the next members of our family! This prospectus has been designed to give you all the information you need to make an informed choice about joining us here at KES Sixth Form. Our promise to you is that we will look after your loved ones as if they are our own and support them as they develop the skills and achieve the results they need for their future. EARLY APPLICATIONS “Early application classes have allowed me to be inspired by others and to gather a range of interesting ideas for medical work experience. It made me feel so much more prepared for applying for Medicine. Early applications and A levels can be a struggle but with the help of expert staff and fellow students it was a lot more manageable and enjoyable for me!” Katie Gage (studying Medicine at the University of Nottingham) 14

Those wishing to consider studying at the universities of Oxford or Cambridge or for courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science will need to have their competitive applications ready at the start of Y13 and have a programme of activities running throughout their time in sixth form. As well as actively encouraging students to take up opportunities outside of school such as work experience, research posts and university conferences, students meet for regular sessions outside curriculum time with their peers. These are designed to prepare students for the rigorous application processes. We look at critical thinking, developing academic talk, the importance of supercurricular exploration, preparing for admissions tests and what to expect in an academic interview. All sessions are rooted in information coming directly from university admissions tutors and from the experience of previous students. A CREATIVE 24

SPARK Regardless of what subjects you study, being creative is hugely important in a number of careers from Architecture to Journalism, Drama to Engineering. "Nobel laureates in the sciences are seventeen times likelier than the average scientist to be a painter, twelve times as likely to be a poet, and four times as likely to be a musician." Royal Holloway's Professor Kate Normington. King Ecgbert drama department actively encourages students to take part in school shows and productions and volunteer as ambassadors in lower school. An opportunity to develop your writing skills, stretch your imaginative powers and share work with fellow writers. Superb opportunity for budding journalists. DRAMA MUSIC CREATIVE WRITING CLUB Concert pianist or just like to join in? Come and find out about the wealth of groups running in the school and see how you can get involved. 25

“I HAVE ENJOYED MEETING NEW PEOPLE, BEING IN LESSONS THAT I ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT AND HAVING MORE FREEDOM THAN IN LOWER SCHOOL.” CURRENT SIXTH FORM STUDENT 27

“THROUGH THE PAIRED READING SCHEME I ENJOYED BEING ABLE TO HELP A YOUNGER STUDENT GAIN CONFIDENCE IN READING AND SPEAKING. THIS WILL LOOK GREAT ON MY CV AND UCAS APPLICATION TO STUDY ENGLISH AT UNIVERSITY. I GAINED CONFIDENCE MYSELF BY TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND EXPLORING THE PROCESS OF LISTENING AND LEADING.” EX STUDENT GROWTH AND 28

DEVELOPMENT EPQ EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION PAIRED READING Dedicated to improving the reading of new Y7 starters, sixth form students play a pivotal role in developing their confidence and their reading skills through this six week programme. Our Y7 students need role models and students who can help them adapt to the incredibly different environment of secondary school. In this scheme students are taught explicit mentoring skills to use with younger students on a one-to-one basis at this crucial time in their education. PEER MENTORING ADVANCED PEER MENTORING Complete a child protection course, ideal for anyone considering a future career in working with others. Work on a 1 to 1 basis communicating positively with younger students. The extended project is highly sought after by universities as it demonstrates your true interest and independent academic skills such as research and referencing. This qualification allows you to conduct an independent project in an area of interest. Designed to stretch and challenge, this is strongly recommended for students who wish to show universities they have more to offer and stand out at interview. FIRST AID Become a practical first aider with our course that gives you the skills to save lives. Highly recommended for students considering a career in nursing or working with others. 29

“THERE IS A GREAT SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH OR JUST SUBJECTS IN GENERAL. THERE IS ALSO A LOT OF LOVELY PEOPLE INCLUDING BOTH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AND I HAVE MADE SOME GREAT FRIENDSHIPS SINCE JOINING IN YEAR 12.” CURRENT SIXTH FORM STUDENT 31

A SENSE OF We have a highly successful football team who compete against other sixth form schools on a Wednesday afternoon. It is a great way to meet friends and socialise. Sixth formers have use of the school facilities and we encourage any student to set up their own team and/or support with lower school. Sixth form is about becoming more independent and more aware of the world around you. This student led club looks at controversial issues that are discussed by teams. Great for developing communication and oratory skills. Community is very important to us at King Ecgbert and we value our students' opinions. Join one of our many committees, including newsletter, publicity, social, sport or fundraising and help develop the student experience. This qualification gives students essential skills in planning, organisation, team work and perseverance. A committed course which links into many career pathways. This is a four week programme in the summer holidays. You will take part in a community project, two residential trips and a graduation. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends, live away from home and develop your independence. BELONGING 33

EX SIXTH FORM STUDENT HI, I'M LUKE AND I'M STUDYING PHYSICS AT OXFORD. OXBRIDGE WAS NEVER EVEN UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR ME UNTIL I RECEIVED SO MUCH ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT FROM THE KES SIXTH FORM FACULTY. THEY GOT ME TO THINK ABOUT AND APPLY FOR IT, DESPITE MY OWN DOUBTS, AND HERE I AM! THAT'S NOT EVEN MENTIONING THE SUPPORT OF THE TEACHERS IN ALL OF MY SUBJECTS WHO HELPED ME ACTUALLY ACHIEVE THE GRADES TO GET HERE. I'M CURRENTLY SPENDING THE SUMMER BACKPACKING IN COLOMBIA AND PERU BEFORE RETURNING FOR MY FINAL YEAR. AFTER THAT, WE'LL SEE. THE CURRENT PLAN IS TO MOVE TO LONDON AND GET INTO THE TECH INDUSTRY AND I HOPE TO BE ABLE TO LIVE AND WORK ABROAD FOR A WHILE. 34

36

EX SIXTH FORM STUDENT HI, MY NAME IS MAY AND I LEFT KES THREE YEARS AGO! I HAVE NOW GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD WITH A FIRST CLASS DEGREE IN ENGLISH LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE INCREDIBLE SUPPORT AND BELIEF THAT MY TEACHERS AT KING ECGBERT HAD SHOWN ME, I WOULDN’T HAVE EVEN APPLIED TO OXFORD, LET ALONE COMPLETED A DEGREE. I HAVE MADE LIFE-LONG FRIENDS HERE, LEARNED FROM SOME OF THE MOST TALENTED WRITERS IN THE WORLD, CAPTAINED A ROWING SQUAD AND TAKEN PART IN SOME REALLY WEIRD OXFORD TRADITIONS! BUT AS I WAS WRITING MY FINAL ESSAY ON KING LEAR, AND REMEMBERED THE MANY, MANY LESSONS WE SPENT READING IT IN A LEVEL ENGLISH, I REALISED HOW MANY OF THESE EXPERIENCES I OWE TO THE SEVEN YEARS I SPENT AT KES. NOW I’M MOVING TO LONDON WITH A JOB IN PRODUCTION AND SCRIPT-WRITING FOR A MARKETING COMPANY. I’M SUPER EXCITED TO GO INTO THE WORLD OF WORK, AND START ADULT LIFE WITH MY FRIENDS IN A BRAND NEW CITY! 37

38

EX SIXTH FORM STUDENT I HAVE JUST FINISHED MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE AND I AM NOW WORKING ON A SUMMER RESEARCH PROJECT ON THE MOTION OF ANISOTROPIC CARBON NANOPARTICLES IN SHEAR FLOW, BASED AT THE MATHS FACULTY. I ENJOYED MY TIME AT KES AND HAD A LOT OF SUPPORT FROM THE SCHOOL WHEN I APPLIED TO CAMBRIDGE. THE STEP CLASSES DURING SIXTH FORM AND BEING ABLE TO ATTEND THE CLASSES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD WERE BOTH ESSENTIAL IN ENSURING I WAS ABLE TO PASS THE ADMISSIONS TEST FOR MATHEMATICS. 39
