Exactly 30 years ago REMA TIP TOP arrived in Australia. A small Automotive subsidiary,
run on a meagre budget, it paved the way for our expansion into what we are today. Over
the subsequent decades since 1988, this Automotive subsidiary consistently delivered
strong sales results built around a culture of family. This created opportunities for an
industrial business to muscle its way into a booming Australian market. Another decade
passed, and REMA acquired ConvaTech, and while the trials and tribulations of the past
two years have been arduous, and no doubt more challenges will come, it’s fair to say that
REMA TIP TOP Australia is really here today.
We are here in a big way, and long into the future we will support the growth and
development of our Automotive and Industrial clients in existing and new markets
through our innovative product solutions, delivered with the service that has been at our
heart since day one.
In the following pages of this newsletter, you will read stories that demonstrate our
unique offering. You will read about our investment in our people and equipment,
including replacing our existing fleet of vehicles. We have stories about great work, and
most importantly safe work, and some news about the future direction of the global
Automotive business and the successful launch of technologically advanced TPMS
products for the Australian market.

OH WHAT A
FEELING

That new car smell is finding its way around REMA TIP TOP
as the first of a fleet of new vehicles arrive at our Australian
branches.
On Friday, 23 February 2018, the first two brand new Toyota
Hilux utes arrived from the dealership at REMA TIP TOP’s
Warabrook office. The vehicles have been fitted out with
top-of-the-range gear thanks to TJM, Broadley Signs,
Automotive Holding Group and Toyota Australia and Cardiff
Toyota.
More are on their way to Western Australia, and in the
coming month a total of 62 vehicles will hit roads and sites
across New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.
Brendan Fordham and Greg Rollings were the lucky
beneficiaries of the first two rides, with call signs RTT01 and
RTT02, and promptly took them to site at PWCS and HVO.
Supply Chain Manager, Peter Burton, said the delivery of the
vehicles was the product of support across the business.
“These utes are a much-needed addition to our fleet. 62
new cars will make their way across Australia this year, with
additional utes coming next year to replace our existing
fleet,” he said.
“This investment in the business and its people is designed
to make serious improvements to our delivery of service,
consistently across the country.”

The Supply Chain team has also been successful in negotiating several new employee
benefit schemes with existing suppliers, including novated leases, car hire, and access
to corporate traveller benefits plus more for all employees.
“We have great existing relationships with our suppliers and business networks across
Australia. Using our buying power, we have been able to negotiate to deliver some of
these deals exclusively to our staff,” Peter Burton said.

AUSTRALIAN
HQ UNVEILED

More than just a building, the new REMA TIP TOP Australian headquarters in
Newcastle paints a picture of where the business wants to go in the future. Along
with opening a new, purpose-built WA warehouse, workshop, and office building less
than a year ago, REMA TIP TOP is demonstrating its intent to grow strongly in the
Australian market across all its business segments.
“What started as a sense of optimism in the market last year, is beginning to bear
fruit in 2018. This building will help provide the opportunity for that to happen,” Craig
Philpotts told staff and other key stakeholders at an event to open the building at the
beginning of March.
“We want to be able to double in size over the next 3-5 years. The epicentre of
what we do doesn’t happen here, but happens on the sites and the roads, with the
customers that we support and service. But here is where we can support our people
to help them achieve success.”
Joined by Newcastle State MP, Tim Crackanthorp, Craig cut the ribbon to officially
open the premise for business.

WOMEN’S DAY

International Women’s Day on Thursday 8
March saw people gather around Australia to
throw their support behind the 2018 theme,
'Press For Progress'. At a morning tea held
at the Warabrook office, we recognised the
importance of uniting as one team to help
end inequality, and raised some money for
Got Your Back Sista, a local charity helping
women escape domestic violence.

PORT HEDLAND
MOTORCYCLE CLUB

The Port Headland Motorcycle Club were
the proud recipients of a $3,000 donation
courtesy of our local crews.
Al Peddie presented Club President, Brad
Stillman with the cheque, who said the
donation was greatly appreciated and will go
toward further developing the club for the
future of the kids in the Port Hedland region.

SWEETHEARTS DAY

Sweethearts Day is a national day to raise
awareness and funds for children and their
families suffering congenital/childhood heart
disease. Sadly, for one of our own people, this
day hits close to home. Margaret McKee, who
has been with REMA TIP TOP for almost 10
years, has a granddaughter who suffers from a
heart disorder.

In February, for Sweethearts Day, the team
in Perth held a morning tea, and asked our
people from around Australia to help support
this cause by raising funds.
Altogether the team raised more than $1,300
for Margaret’s family.

SOFTBALLERS
HIT A WINNER

The U15 Gladstone softball rep team is on
its way to the Queensland State Finals in
Brisbane during the May long weekend. The
boys will be looking sharp in a set of new
polo shirts, donated by the REMA Gladstone
branch, which will be worn by players and
support staff during throughout competition.

community support.

DAMPIER TEAMS AMASS TWO
YEARS INJURY FREE

MATESAFE

A focus on family and getting home safely every day is integral to the continued safe work success of
the Rio Tinto Dampier Port crew who in March surpassed two-years injury free.
According to Area Manager, Scotty Hunter, the strong team culture and bonds of mateship paired
with their revamped Mate Safe boards have been instrumental in achieving these results.
“The board is a great tool that gives everyone the opportunity to speak up and talk about the job,
its hazards, and the controls we are putting in place. By reflecting on the shift, we can identify
what worked well and what has been set up to make the guys on the next shift safe and successful.
Communication is key with safety,” he said.
General Manager West, Tom Fraser said the team set the benchmark across the business.
“This is a great achievement from all the team at Dampier, and shows a great example for the rest
of our business. We are incredibly proud of their continued focus on our Mate Safe values. What’s
particularly impressive is their focus on continuous improvement and not taking safety for granted.”

ANDERSON POINT: ONE
YEAR INJURY FREE

In mid-February the Anderson Point team quietly slipped past one-year LTI and MTI free.

In the past year the crews have placed a strong focus on preventing hand and finger injuries
through preventative measures to remove line-of-fire hazards, and a focus through engagement in
toolbox talks and leadership safety interactions. The team continually drives its Mate Safe culture
to ensure that everyone goes home each day unharmed.

FMG Area Manager, Al Peddie, congratulated everyone for their continued focus and drive towards
zero harm.

“It is the strong safety culture displayed by everyone in this team, and the expectations you each
set for all others that come to assist on shutdowns and backfill that has allowed us to reach this
awesome target,” Al said.

“This team has greatly contributed to Hedland Operations, and FMG’s overall reduction in TRIFR.”

BHP OPERATIONS REACH
MAJOR MILESTONES

April saw our BHP Operations crews hit a number of important milestones.
On Monday 23 April, our Inland BHP shutdown crew surpassed 150 days injury-free, while the base load crew –
consisting of 47 belt and mechanical technicians, which has been partnering with BHP since December – ticked
over 146 days injury free, and the BHP Ports base load crew ticked over 132 days LTI and MTI free.
Totalling more than 147,000 man hours, this represents the largest stretch of injury-free time for the inland
crew since we took on this contract four years ago. As such, it was met with great feedback from all levels of
management at BHP.
Inland Operations Manager, Dean Lancaster acknowledged the leaders of all the crews for their commitment to
safety and their teams, signalling that the next goal was to bring the team’s TRIFR figure into single digits.
“Everyone played a part, and they all need congratulating: Ben Smith, Adam Croft, Dan Schuster, Wayne
Hunter, Nic Gallacher, Michael Wirihana, Simon Chaplin, John Thomson, Jordan Falconer, Jeremy Walsh, Troy
Staudacher, Carlos Restrepo, Steve Walters, Carl Winder, Damien Hutt,” Dean said.
“Stefan Thomson the newly appointed Area Manager has also worked tirelessly over the past 6 months
ensuring the success of the base load crews. Mark Dawson and Jarryd Perryman also continue to play a major
role in the way we structure our manning for the inland shuts and breakdowns. This is a great result, but it’s
important that we don’t become complacent or comfortable with what we have achieved.”

“NOT A MATESAFE
SCRATCH”

TRIPLE SHUTDOWN SUCCESS

Since 27 February the crews at Olympic Dam have successfully undertaken three shutdowns across the site
totally more than 11,000-man hours, “without so much as a scratch”, said Maintenance Coordinator, Gary Thomas.

The Clark shut was the first off the mark. A team of 17 worked across the seven-day shutdown handing back the
plant to production four hours early, with zero incidents. We even had the opportunity to support BHP and other
workgroups throughout the shut.

Nine guys from the Clark shut stayed on site to prep for the
Smelter shut, and a further 10 were mobilised to site. Another
week-long shut, the work on the Smelter was completed
successfully and safely 12 hours early.

This was all down to good hazard ID, performing a ‘first 15’ and
‘last 15’ and keeping up good housekeeping during the shift.

Finally, we mobilised 63 people for the Processing shut, more
than double the crew of any previous shut on site. This shut
combined rubber lining and surface protection work on top of
the traditional conveyor maintenance work, and drew on local
labour, interstate crews and support from our labour supply
partners to deliver another safe, successful and timely shutdown.

Former employee, now BHP Superintendent – Shutdown Execution, Mick Nelson, congratulated the crews on the
shutdown work, which was reiterated by State Manager Leo Piccinin.

A big thank you goes to: David Barrett, Anthony Pridgeon, Tanya Hick, Gary Thomas, Kaitlin Peterson, Ebony
Sayers, Michael Chaffey, Jason Barry, Nigel Jones, Lisa Stothard, Roslyn Jones, Bruce and Kelly Morale, Brenten
and Nicole Dwyer, Tama Querino, Alicia Waldron, and the more than 60 boys that were on the tools.

SCRAPER INPROVEMENTS CREATE
SAVINGS FOR PWCS

Belt scrapers act as a cleaning implement for belts by removing residual material as it passes
chutes or transfer points. An effective belt cleaning system will lower spillage and carryback which
improves the working life of the conveyor and its components.
Recently a collaboration between our personnel and the PWCS maintenance team at its
Kooragang terminal delivered scraper improvements on all the systems across the site. The
upgrade has delivered immediate results with one conveyor previously experiencing a carryback
rate of 112kg/hour, reduced to 10kg/hour, which equates to a spillage reduction of more than 670
tonnes of coal.
Industry East General Manager, Matt White said the result delivered on the East Coast’s business
plan with both product and service wins, whilst also generating a win for the customer.
“Through this improvement process we’ve been able to grow our revenue stream at PWCS,
improve on our EBIT results and increase our product to service ratio,” he said.
“Most importantly however, we’ve achieved a result that will save the customer money in the long
run by reducing their downtime and improving their throughput.”

shirt, casually fell down a tad, covering up his embroidered name. Never mind.

STACKER BELT
CHANGE STACKS

UP AT PWCS

Another notch in belt of the crew at PWCS was achieved
after they undertook a stacker belt change at the end
of February that was successfully completed incident
free, quality conformant, and under the scheduled shut
duration time by 20 per cent.
The day team was led by Brendan Fordham and consisted
of Graeme True, Luke Wilton, Joel Gay, Dereck Randle,
Andrew Pattie, and Mark Sullivan, while the night team
ran under the direction of Adam Bain, with Owen Gay,
Shane Dale, Brad Shelton, and Ivan Gobor.

FMG’s latest massive iron ore vessel, the Matilda is the fifth vessel to be launched in
its fleet. All the vessels are named after Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s family members,
and Matilda, was launched at a special event on 29 December 2017. A number of our
personnel attended the event and toured the ship including Jake, Winx, Damo and Duane.

STEP-UP GOES
PERMANENT

For five years Adam Hicks has been an integral part of the team at FMG Anderson Point.
According to Area Manager, Al Peddie, he has continually shown the leadership and culture that underpins the
values of the team and will help to drive high quality work in his new role.
“Adam has shown when slotting in as a step-up supervisor that he can get good results and importantly keep
the guys safe, and promote the Mate Safe culture through the team,” Al said.
“It’s great to be able to promote someone through the ranks, and we’re looking forward to Adam’s success in a
permanent capacity as Port Conveyor Maintenance Supervisor.”

In a first for REMA TIP TOP Australia, personnel from Germany, the Philippines and Australia combined forces
to complete a six-week rubber lining shutdown at Incitec Pivot’s Phosphate Hill.

The shutdown consisted of a number of rubber lining repair jobs to different vessels across the site, the largest
of which was completely re-lining the walls of a reactor with Chemoline 4B.

Eleven crew members worked on both the day shift and the night shift, made up of both a German supervisor
and an Australian supervisor, six Filipino rubber liners and three Australians.

Darrell Screen, who managed the project, said everyone learnt a lot from the multinational collaboration.

“The Germans and Filipinos have a huge amount of rubber lining experience that we can draw from and learn
from for the future,” he said.

“It was a massive shut, across six weeks since mid-March, and we were able to complete it with zero quality
incidents and zero safety incidents. The biggest endorsement for the team is that we are going back to do the
same job on a second reactor in the next week. The team make-up will be different, but the lessons learned
from our international partners will go a long way in ensuring success for the future.”

GLOBAL WORKSHOP TO
DETERMINE STRATEGIC DIRECTION

The brightest minds from REMA TIP TOP’s global Automotive subsidiaries gathered in Munich during
February to discuss the future growth and direction of the segment.
The broader automotive industry is beginning to go through major changes centred predominantly around
electronic vehicles, self-driving and automated vehicles, down to airless tyres.
The objective during the two-day workshop led by REMA TIP TOP board member, Patric Scheungraber, was to
determine how to adapt the traditional business unit to meet the needs of our customers of the future. At its
core, the workshop drilled down to discuss “What will Automotive mean to our future customers?”.
General Manager, Andrew Fisher, who was in attendance, said the key to the success of this strategy was the
collaboration between the subsidiaries to develop a stratagy that everyone can work towards.
“There are lots of new opportunities in the market, some of which we’re already tapping into, such as TPMS.
It’s about becoming more than just a supplier of consumables for the tyre repair industry,” he said.
“It’s about how we can have a positive impact on the mobility of people and things, while still championing
sustainability by living the value of ‘repair, don’t replace’.
The workshop decided on five key work streams that each of the global Automotive leaders were allocated to,
to help the company develop and live its new stratagy.

EXPERIENCE Uustalu and Technical Consultant, Peter Scobie
attended a technical training tyre repair standardisation
workshop in Germany. They were joined from around
the globe by 23 other REMA TIP TOP tyre repair
experts to discuss and share technical knowledge and
experience, that will help to ensure our global standard
of tyre repair service, advice and product offering
remains number one in its field.

Impressively, the 25 experts in attendance racked up
collectively almost 700 years of tyre repair experience.

INROADS AT
TYREPOWER

A meeting between Tyrepower’s top
brass and Automotive WA State
Manager, Rob Lack, has delivered the
potential for a big jump into the TPMS
game.

Rob met with CEO David Wilson, and
National Fleet & IT Systems Manager,
Mathew Ryan, in Melbourne to discuss the
wide-ranging advantages of TPMS.

Representing more than 300 stores,
Tyrepower is the largest independent buying
group in the Australian tyre industry, and prides
itself on its focus on innovation and being at the
forefront of technology.

Rob presented the TPMS tool, which REMA has
exclusive distributorship of in Australia, as a
precursor to the Tyrepower National Conference in
April.

The feedback from the meeting was very positive,
and armed with this information we went into the
conference in mid April with confidence.

It paid off, with the Auto team creating hundreds of sales
leads. This tradeshow demonstrated our market leadership
in TPMS product, service, and training expertise.

GOODYEAR NATIONAL CONFERENCE

In mid-February Rob Lack and Kristo Uustalu travelled to Hobart for Goodyear Tyre’s National
Conference. The pair launched and presented REMA TIP TOP’s new TPMS tool for the first time and a
selection of other key products to Goodyear franchisee owners and managers from around Australia.

NEW MELBOURNE WAREHOUSE

ITS and REMA Victoria have relocated their operations to 2 Venture Court, Dandelong South. The
shared warehouse space for both our REMA reps and ITS reps will deliver a more efficient supply
chain and support services so that these teams can continue delivering their same great product
and services to customers.
The move was carried out entirely by the Victorian team on time and with minimal disruption.
