6 LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING: EPHESIANS 5:22-33 A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Ephesians Wives submit to your husband’s as to the Lord. Forthehusband is the head of the wife as Christ is the headoftheChurch, his body, of which He is the Saviour. Nowasthechurch submits to Christ so also wives should submit totheirhusbands in everything. Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the churchandgave Himself up for her make holy, cleansingher bythewashing with water through the word, and to present hertohimself as radiant church, without stain or wrinkleoranyother blemish, but holy blameless. In this same way, husbandsought to love their wives as their own bodies. He wholoveshis wife loves himself. After all no one ever hatedhisownbody but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ doesthechurch – for we are members of His body. For this reason, aman will leave his father and mother and be unitedtohiswifeand the two will become one flesh. This is aprofoundmystery – but I am talking about Christ andthechurch. However, each one of you must love and respect hiswifeashe loves himself and the wife must respect her husband. The word of the Lord Thanks be to God.
