Madam Chung Iee Lan In Loving Memory ACCOLADES AFTER ACCOLADES FOR SPI Gone too soon Pn Chung Iee Lan You served above and beyond the call of duty, dedicated and ever-willing to lend a hand. We always looked to you when a Paulian was ill or injured –you were our Dr in the house. How ironic life is. Rest in Heavenly peace, dear Pn Chung. SPI and our St.John Ambulance unit - will be forever indebted to you. - Madam Shantini Thilaga Lingam The angels looked down from heaven one night They searched for miles afar And deep within the distance They could see a shining star They knew that very instant That the star was theirs to gain So they took you up to heaven forever to remain Look down on us from heaven. Keep us free from hurt and pain You’ll always be within our hearts Until we meet again We will always miss you … 50

The Song Has Ended But Your Melody Lingers On The late Mdm. Chung Iee Lan was the teacher-in-charge of SMK St. Paul Combined Division since it was founded in 2013. It was the first time ever that SMK St. Paul had a separate Adult Division to cater to the Form 6 students, who were made up of students from various backgrounds and secondary schools. Though a relatively new division at the time, the SMK St. Paul Combined Division has been an active and significant unit in the Pre-University Unit of the school. Since it was founded, its members and teachers, under the leadership of Mdm. Chung, have served and aided the school during the Annual Sports Day, Cross-Country Run, Telematch, and OPA Games. Its achievements in various activities such as Flag Day Collections and First Aid Competitions are proof of the dedication and commitment of Mdm. Chung as the teacher-in-charge. One significant victory was when the Ambulance Adult team bagged the second place in the Biennial Singapore-Malaysia First Aid Competition held in Singapore in 2017. Mdm. Chung was also appointed by the State Education Department to serve as the Technical Chairperson for St. John Ambulance of Malaysia Negeri Sembilan, and she has been supportive of all the initiatives and activities organised at the state and district levels. For seven years, Mdm. Chung had dedicated her time, energy, and commitment not only as a teacher advisor to the Division but also as an officer of the St. John Ambulance of Malaysia. QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE RECIPIENT OF THE TAN SRI CHAN CHOONG TAK AWARD 2020 MASTER KEERTAN MURUGESAVARAN Martin Luther King Jr once said the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Being a recipient of this prestigious award is an honour and an absolute recognition in life. Life is full of wonders. Being open to unexpected turns in the road is a significant part of success. If you try to plan every step-in life, you may miss those wonderful twists and turns. I’m onto finding my next adventure in Universiti Tenaga Nasional. Do it well, enjoy it, and then don’t think about what comes next. I’m truly honoured and humbled to be the recipient of the Tan Sri Chan Choong Tak Award for the year 2020. Being an introverted individual, life in high school hasn’t been easy. I had to constantly struggle and fight to shine among others. It was truly a learning process to explore my abilities and talents, and overcome my insecurities. I’ve faced failures, rejections, achievements, responsibilities, and a clump of lessons. These lessons will reflect my life in the upcoming years to be a great citizen. To be honest, the way to this award was no child’s play. I had to go through and deal with various complex obstacles. Furthermore, bringing an idea to reality requires a great deal of effort. Also, various challenges and problems arose along the way. With regular and gradual persistence, all the problems were solved one by one. Furthermore, I was able to overcome every obstacle that came along the way. Moreover, I was absolute that my efforts would bear fruits and enhance the lives of many people. Thinking about how my actions will benefit people was the motivation behind my hard work. I would love to dedicate this prestigious award to my parents. I am what I am today because of the efforts of my parents. Furthermore, my parents left no stone unturned in providing me with the necessary resources in life. I can never pay back what they did for me. My seniors have a major role in my success. They had a profound role in my skill development. Moreover, their training will come in handy in different stages of my career. My friends hold a very special place in my life as well. Your warm company is a source of inspiration in my life. The support of friends has been valuable in encouraging me to work hard. This award will always be dear to me. It will always be a reminder of the hard work that I have put into my school life. Moreover, this award will only motivate me to achieve more success in the future. A short message or reminder to my dear Paulians, life may be a struggle at a times but remember there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Keertan Murugesvaran 52

RECIPIENT OF THE TAN SRI CHAN CHOONG TAK AWARD 2021 MASTER DIVESH MAHDEV TATA Allow me to start by saying that it is an absolute honour to be given the opportunity to give a few words and share my experience from receiving the Tan Sri Dato’ Chan Choong Tak award for the year 2021. I bid my sincere gratitude to the Editorial Board for inviting me to do so. Before I go on any further, I must proclaim that our school magazine has always been our pride and a place where we can all reminisce and experience nostalgia together. A huge, heartfelt congratulations from the bottom of my heart to the team for doing an amazing job at making our school magazine so profound. I remember the day I got on stage to receive this award and it was such a surreal feeling. The Tan Sri Dato’ Chan Choong Tak award caught my eye when I was in Form 2, a young Paulian at the precipice of reaching my full potential. I attended the Annual Old Paulians Association Dinner as a prefect and that’s when I saw my senior receiving this award on stage. That really inspired me to work hard and persevere through a varied array of challenges hoping that I could be an exemplary figure to younger Paulians. At this moment, it fills me with utmost joy to say that all my hard work and sacrifices have paid off. It was certainly not an easy journey to reach the destination but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. These years at St . Paul’s have been my most formative – with experiences and life lessons I will cherish and carry with me as long as I live. I hope that this will be of inspiration and motivation for my fellow Young Paulians to pursue what they want in life. Dream big and work hard. As I said before, the journey is not an easy feat, but to get there and once you achieve what you want, it is the best feeling in the world. Words can never truly describe the feeling, you have to chase it, and find out for yourselves. A wise man once told me, “ Don’t stop until you are proud”. Of course, I owe it all to my parents and brothers, without whom I would not have been able to soar and reach for the stars. Their unending support, love and guidance have made me the person I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful. I would also like to thank my friends, from the bottom of my heart, who have been there for me since day one, through rain or shine, day or night. My friends really play a huge role in my journey in life, in the wildly bizarre and beautiful dynamics of human connection, and without them I don’t think I’ll be where I am today. They have taught me so much about life, of the hardships, trials and tribulations that awaits me in my future, but at the same time, I know for certain that they will always be by my side to get me through it all. This is undoubtedly the best part of being a Paulian. The friendships you make and cultivate, the seeds you sow and the effort you put into your friendships – these will all last a lifetime. I am happy to say that I have found the best people I will ever meet in my life at St . Paul’s, and I know that they will always be there for me. Last but not least I would like to thank my teachers who have guided and moulded me to be who I am today. The teachers at St Paul’s are nothing short of brilliant, and their support and love all these years, have taught me so much about the power of kindness and knowledge. They have sharpened my skills, equipped me with tools needed to shape myself into a better human being, independently. Their support has been monumental, and significant throughout my journey in life. Being a Paulian is a beautiful and formative experience. St Paul’s is not merely a school– for most of us, it is home. Within those corridors we have laughed, screamed, cried, and shared beautiful memories that will forever live on in the echoes that we leave in our wake. Before I end, let me quote something that will be engraved in my heart forever. “ ONCE A PAULIAN, ALWAYS A PAULIAN”. This quote has never been more profound to me than it is today. QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE SMK ST. PAUL, SEREMBAN ANALYSIS OF stpm 2020 RESULTS 57

ACCOLADES It was year 2017. A 15 year-old boy was at the award giving ceremony for SPM top scorers .When the top scorer was announced, it just left him speechless. Literally the entire hall of ECM Libra was shaking from thunderous applause from the audience. It gave him massive Goosebumps. He told himself that he would one day be on top of that stage experiencing the same scenario. The rest is history. I AM THAT BOY. Put it this way. This path is similar to the full marathon of 26.2miles. Your parents and teachers can only help you to a certain distance, the rest is all on you. When lactic acid starts building up, your legs feel like jelly and your heartbeat goes through the roof, I just want you to know that you have come too far to quit, my dear Paulians. Get a reward out of it. There has never been a better feeling than succeeding in what you put your heart and mind into. I always knew that I will make it to the top, not immediately but eventually. To be frank,I am not the smartest person in the classroom, but I sure am the hardest working person there. My advice to young Paulians is to firstly identify your WHY. Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure. Secondly, there is a difference between learning and studying. Be a life long learner. Thirdly, have a laser-like focus on what you want to achieve and believe in it. Nothing else matters. Next, keep in mind that you are in this for the long run, train your stamina. Pay the price of working day in and day out. Last but not least, do not forget to live a life on your journey to success. Treasure the times spent with your family, friends and teachers. If you choose to be like me, who goes to school every day to just enjoy, have fun and be worry-free, you can. But be prepared to grind and work insanely hard behind the scene. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. Paulians, do whatever it takes and shock everyone! Best of luck, my brothers. Ong Chun Jet SPM 2019 58

ACCOLADES 28 November 2019, Yes! The day had finally come. It was the last day of the SPM Examinations, 2019. Finally! I was done with the SPM examination after months of hard work and burning the midnight oil. All the hard work paid off when I received my results on March 5, 2020. Always believe in the saying “No Pain, No Gain”. Looking back on the 5 years as an active student in SPI, it was definitely a sweet and memorable experience, one that if I am given the chance, will want to experience all over again. Of the 5 years, the final year was the most hectic and intense of my secondary school life, from the increased amount of homework to the extended timetable in school. This was to ensure that we were armed to the tooth to face the final hurdle, the SPM examinations. It was all worth the sacrifice when I received my results slip. It is very vital for us as students to manage our time wisely. It will not only help you save time spent on unnecessary activities, but also relieve you of stress from doing last-minute revision. Always have a break in between your study sessions, do not stress yourself out as it will only have an adverse effect on you instead.  Always refer to your teachers or friends on any questions related to the syllabus which you are uncertain of. This will help you understand the topics better and not cause further confusion. There are going to be times in our lives when we face obstacles that give us the urge to give up, but if we persevere, success will find its way towards us eventually. The satisfaction that follows can even be used to fuel us to aim higher and do better in the future. There is always something to be learnt in the process of chasing our goals. What matters most is to enjoy the process, even if the outcomes are not as expected; at least we know that we have given our best. If you overcome the failures and keep going, it is going to be better than before. As Barack Obama once said, “The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won’t. It’s whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.” Yam Ee Sean SPM 2019 59

ACCOLADES ‘Life iis full of ups and downs’, this also perfectly describes my journey in St. Paul’s. I still remember when I first got my UPSR results; my mother immediately brought me to St. Paul’s Institution because in her point of view, St. Paul’s would be an excellent secondary school to improve my English. At first, I was not used to the surroundings as my primary school only had around 60 students for each year. It was really uncomfortable at first, seeing so many students in a small classroom but who knew those were the people who will make my experience in St. Paul’s truly amazing. It wasn’t an easy task achieving success because I was a playful boy. Play time was essential for me. I would waste my time hanging out with my friends rather than using my precious time studying. Even when exams were right around the corner, I still couldn’t resist playing games on my smartphone. Although I seemed to not pay attention in my studies, I would still pay attention both in class and at tuition. In my point of view, listening to the teacher teaching is more useful than studying the specific topic by yourself. Teachers have more knowledge and experience in their own profession. Therefore, paying attention in class is one of the secrets for me to survive these five years. Of course, processing all the information given by the teacher and asking relevant questions are also equally important. Even asking questions that are not related to the syllabus makes the learning environment more fun and it somehow increases our efficiency in studying too. Asking silly questions can somehow help us to memorize facts. Some questions help us recap what we have learnt. So, do ask questions, I believe teachers are willing to give a helping hand to solve our curiosity. During my final year in St. Paul’s, I acknowledged that I needed to change to prepare for SPM. I started to reduce my time spent playing but I still played a bit of sports to stay healthy. I also increased my time spent for revision. I started to ask more questions in class especially for my weaker subjects. These helped me to understand better. After class I would seek the teachers personally to solve any study-related problems. SPM is just a checkpoint for us. There are more to come and we shouldn’t stop improving ourselves. Learning to cope with our surroundings and learning to step out of our comfort zone would come in handy to face the outside world. “The journey is never ending. There’s always going to be growth, improvement, adversity; you just got to take it all in and do what’s right, continue to grow, continue to live in the moment.” (Antonio Brown) Gavin Lim Zhen Yao SPM 2019 60

ACCOLADES First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers for their efforts in teaching and guiding me. I would also like to thank my parents and friends for their support and encouragement in my journey. Many people told me that Form 6 is not a good choice since Form 6 is very challenging and the duration of study is longer compared to other routes. However, I still decided to choose Form 6 and give it a try. I think Form 6 is the right choice because STPM is widely recognized and the syllabus in Form 6 is useful when I pursue my degree at the university . I believed that I can pass the STPM examination with my effort and determination. I focused in class and asked questions if necessary. I also wrote down the important notes so that I would not forget  important facts. I created my own extra notes and summarized the notes to ensure that I understood every part of the topic. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. Answering questions is important to apply the knowledge and discover the new knowledge in the topic. These are the study techniques which helped me in my STPM examination. Everyone has his or her own study methods. You can use any study methods that are suitable for you. Time management was an important skill required in my journey. I planned the time for revision for every subject. Leisure time is also necessary in our life. You should do something which can help you relax and also have enough rest. Sufficient rest and relaxation can reduce your stress and keep your body healthy. I also built self-discipline and determination. I would always make sure I finish the tasks given before the due date. I would not give up when I was not satisfied with my results, instead I would work harder to achieve my target. To all Paulians, trust yourself and do what is necessary to achieve your goal. Remember that perseverance is the key to success, so never give up . I wish you all the best for the future. Thank you. Fung Kaah Yong STPM 2019 61

ACCOLADES Well, I personally decided on doing Form 6 when I was in Form 4 itself…maybe compared to others a younger age to make my pre-U choice. The main reason was that I did not have the courage to consider other options. However, I do not regret my decision, as during my time in Form 6 my social relationships and my determination in studying had improved. I admit that during my time in Form 6, I studied much harder than during my time in Form 5, as the Form 6 syllabus was a huge leap from what I learned in Form 5. Still, I took this as a challenge, and I tried hard to push myself further. During semester 1, I was quite convinced that my best result will only be passing all subjects, based on my trial Semester 1 exam results. I was glad that I did not give up during this hard period, and luckily my actual Semester 1 result was not as bad as I predicted. I believe that being mentally strong is needed to survive in Form 6. Besides, I tried to concentrate in class as much as possible, because due to financial constraint I did not attend tuition classes. I tried to take as much notes as I could during class and constantly did revision based on my notes and the reference books. Life in Form 6 can be quite stressful, as students not only need to focus on the tough academic subjects, but also need to focus on co-curricular activities to get enough co-curricular marks for university application. Nevertheless, some entertainment is still necessary, as humans are not robots. For example, I watched television shows when I was feeling overstressed in my studies. I believed that a suitable amount of entertainment helps Form 6 students to maintain good mental health. I would like to take the opportunity to thank my family. Without them, I could not make it to the end. Of course, I would also like to thank my alma mater, St. Paul’s Institution, and the teachers. Their dedication towards every student will always be remembered. Finally, I would like to thank my friends for supporting me academically and emotionally during my time in Form 6. My final advice for future Form 6 students: “Either do not attempt at all, or go through with it.” Ovid, Ars Amatoria, Book I. 389 Thank you. Lai Yee Kang STPM 2019 62

ACCOLADES Growing up as the youngest child of the family, I was forced to study hard and get excellent results since I was a kid just because my brother and sister had excellent academic results. During my primary school years, I really hated studying because I didn’t really understand the importance of studying. Other than that, I didn’t participate actively in sports and co-curriculum activities. My primary school years ended with 3’A for UPSR and not having any honorable achievement in co-curricular activities were quite an embarrassment because my siblings obtained 6’ and 7’A for their UPSR. Moving on, there wasn’t any improvement to my academic results during my first year in secondary school. At the age of 14 , my attitude changed when I started to show interest in basketball due to my friends’ influence. It was the first time where I was so passionate about something. I trained day in and day out hoping to join the school basketball team. The process of training hard to enhance my skills helped me to develop strong self-discipline. I think it might be a ‘resonance’ effect whereby when I started to work hard to train, unconsciously I started to revise on my academic subjects without having my parents forcing me. Eventually, I obtained 8’A for my SPM. I took the opportunity to do STPM because I didn’t have a clear path about my future yet. My parents agreed that the two years in Form 6 will allow me to have a more mature mindset and clearer path about my future. To be honest, I didn’t really hope to get straight A’s in STPM because everyone was saying that it will be very difficult. The first semester was tough because I was so stressed up with the new studying environment and intensity. Fortunately, I was blessed with wonderful teachers who helped me along the way. I was grateful that I made amazing friends whereby we helped each other in our studies. These two years really were a life-changing experience for me. I finally realized that studying to get excellent academic results is not the only  important thing in our life. What is important is that we need to have a good attitude when facing problems, always learn from our failures and appreciate the people around us who have helped and supported us. The real purpose of studying in school is not learning to get good academic results only but to prepare ourselves with the correct skills and attitude to face the society in the future. ACCOLADES Journey to Success         I never thought of experiencing life as a Form 6 student in St Paul’s Institution. Form 6 was not my choice but after careful consideration, I chose to do it. To be honest, doing Form 6 was not easy but it was not completely hard either. It needs good time management, self-discipline, determination as well as passion.         Let me share with all of you what I did to score such good grades. First of all, I formulated a detailed study plan and short-term goals. I was able to manage my time well by having an effective timetable. Setting a goal motivated me to be more enthusiastic in my studies. No doubt, there have been obstacles along my way as I took this journey to success. To overcome those obstacles, I tried not to pay attention to them and think of ways to keep going without them affecting my way to reach my goals.         To do well in my STPM, I did not end up becoming a hermit and forget my social life. I managed to strike a healthy balance between my studies and entertainment. I have wisely spent my time watching movies, hanging out with my friends, or even exercising. These help me wind down and relieve stress.         From my point of view, everyone has their own study style. Just figure out which styles suit you the best and do what works for you. Most importantly, be positive about your ability to succeed. Do not give up easily as there is no failure except in no longer trying.         I would like to end here by quoting Winston S. Churchill, the former prime minister of the UK, “Success is not final;  failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”         God bless you all. Stay safe and healthy. Ngo hui Waen STPM 2019 64

ACCOLADES First and foremost , I would like to express my utmost gratitude to the teachers who had sacrificed their time and energy to guide and educate me throughout my 5 years of studies in SPI . I definitely would not have achieved what I have now without their dedication and guidance.       I think we would all agree that the year 2020 was an extremely tough year for everyone , especially for the students who were forced to attend online classes at home. From my own experience, I lost concentration in my studies due to the temptations of the online games or even social media apps installed in my mobile phone. However, my family and teachers constantly reminded me of the importance of my SPM results, which will serve as a passport for me to gain entrance to prestigious universities where I will pursue my tertiary education. Since then , I created a timetable for myself so that I would do a little bit of revision everyday instead of spending all my time playing games.       Other than revising daily, another effective way to prepare for the SPM examination is by doing past year or trials examination questions so that you are able to understand how the marks are given for each point in your answer. As for my last tip , never be afraid to ask if you ever have a doubt regarding a certain subject. You may ask your teachers or even friends who have a better understanding on the topics as this would definitely help to reinforce your understanding.       My primary motivation that kept me going is my parents. They have been spending countless money and time in nurturing me to become a better person even until now. That is why I had made up my mind to excel in the SPM examination to repay them and thankfully, I achieved it to be the pride of my family. Besides,  I was eager to attain the best results possible to ensure that I have the opportunity of receiving a scholarship to pursue my tertiary education without causing enormous financial burden to my parents.       To all Paulians, bear in mind that with knowledge comes power. If you are craving for success and satisfaction in life, make sure you work harder and smarter than anyone else as success is no accident. I sincerely hope that all of you will strive for the best in your future undertakings. God bless you all. Ng jing Xuan SPM 2020 65

I had no idea what to do after my SPM and Form 6 was the best choice for me. I wanted to take up this challenge and of course, to explore my potential in other areas too. I had gone through ups and downs in my Form 6 life but I am glad that these experiences made me a better person. After one and a half years, I know myself better and it has boosted my self-esteem. I have never regretted my choice for pursuing Form 6. When I was asked about study tips, to be honest, there is no alternative to success. All I had done was to try my best to understand all concepts and techniques. Understanding is better than just memorising the facts, so I tried to retain the knowledge in my memory for a longer time while making sure I utilised it. Drawing mind maps and taking down short notes helped me to understand the lessons and I could refer to it any time. I made sure to revise and solve all my doubts right after every lesson to ensure that I understood what I studied. Time management and self-discipline are important in order to achieve success. I did part time jobs during my free time and this was where I learnt good planning habits. I had to complete my work efficiently within a limited time frame so I could have enough time to rest and concentrate on my studies.  I was addicted to the MOBA game King of Honour but I played it only after I finished my homework and revision. I knew that my education was my priority so I planned my time well to balance both my studies and hobbies. Everyone is different in terms of hobbies and habits. Thus, we must also take time to relax as it helps to have better concentration. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family, teachers and friends. I am blessed to have such responsible teachers and friends who were always willing to give a helping hand when I faced any difficulties throughout my Form 6. I will never forget all of you and the memories we created together at St. Paul’s Institution. Wong Xiao hui STPM 2020 ACCOLADES 66

BAHASA INGGERIS ‘We will never stop fighting for this planet’ – Greta Thunberg. How can young people make change happen? This essay was awarded the Bronze Medal in the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition 2020 “ STOP POLLUTION !!!” “ SAVE THE EARTH !!!” “ TIME IS RUNNING OUT !!!” Those are the chants we hear and signs we have seen for decades but were any changes implemented? Did anyone even notice those who were preaching the truth? Unfortunately, people of this century and the last one were blinded by greed. Would humans sacrifice their hard-earned money for the environment? “Of course”, they would say through donation but if you exchange the word “money” with “wealth”, the answer might change to “Maybe not the wealth that I worked hard for”. My point is the method we use until now is inefficient and not effective. What about social media? I guarantee at least 50% of users just like, share and all talk but they would take no real action. That is not the way to do it, so here I am to share my opinion that will lead the younger generations onto the right path in saving our planet and future. What would be a great leap in the progress of saving our planet is through young entrepreneurs. “The rich listen to the rich” , a concept that I thought of and observed. Through these young leaders, we could use them as a media to spread awareness in the business realm where most of the problems first arose. Aside from that, young entrepreneurs can propose business schemes that go hand in hand with our mission to save planet Earth, whether it is an initiative to inspire the younger generation to partake in activities pertaining to the conservation and preservation of the environment or inventing and innovating technologies that are eco-friendly. With those contributions, it serves as a push for younger generations to start making a change. Therefore, we definitely need to produce more of these young entrepreneurs to inspire creative and innovative youngsters to join venture in our mission to save our environment as a step towards our main goal. Young people generally have strong competitive spirits. With a good mix of hard work and diligence they would turn out to be champions and leaders in the competitions they take part in. Hence, Earth would benefit if young people join environmental themed competitions such as Toyota Eco Youth, International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX), and International Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Competition. Through these platforms, the younger generation are encouraged to bring their ideas to life and present it to inspire the public and update the minds of the older generations on innovative ways to save the Earth. No doubt that competitions serve as awareness platforms too because presenting ideas comes with proofs in the form of statistics and facts. Hence, everybody including toddlers who watch these competition’s presentations will gain some knowledge on the Earth’s current debilitating condition. The more the merrier I would say for joining competitions because at the end of the day, it only brings benefit to society and the environment. Ah yes, the greatest enemy of young people - Procrastination! Stop giving excuses. Stop saying that we are powerless young people. No matter how young we are, no matter how long it takes, we can and will reach our goal to save Earth. Hope is what we need as it leads us onto the right path. Giving up is a curse from the devil to lure us into darkness and denial. What I am trying to convey to the younger generations is never lose the hope you have for Earth. Hope is the greatest energy source we have to sustain Earth and without hope in everyone of us, Earth dies faster than even the most pessimist of scientists could expect. Aside from hope, we need perseverance to drive us away from procrastination. Perseverance in every action we take is the key to save Earth. No matter what comments the give us or the limits they set, with perseverance, hope and the right knowledge, everything is possible including changing the faith of the future. Project is in every youngster’s dictionary if they have been through university. Mostly everyone who participated in a project knows how hard and tedious it is, research papers messy on the floor, Google Chrome with ten or more tabs yet students always have fun doing it. The reason why I mentioned project is because I see its potential of being a medium to raise awareness on saving Earth. Students can generate ideas that inspire their juniors by incorporating environmental awareness in their thesis. I did notice that students in certain fields such as Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Petroleum Engineering incorporate environmental problems in their project to help reduce pollution and water usage as a way to curb the climate change. However small percentage of students would not make a major impact in saving the Earth. Hence, those students can create a movement to encourage other students from different faculties to incorporate environmental issues in their project to raise more awareness in the university and the community around it. “Lack of doctors”, “Lack of engineers”, why not “Lack of environmental specialist”? Yes, I agree we need to modernize this world but at the same time, the environment should not be jeopardized. Balance in all aspects of life is important for humanity to sustain its existence. Through this point, I encourage young people to explore careers related to the environment. Anyway, we have our best polymath, Mr. Google hence no excuse can be given. Youngsters can use it to find information on career related to environment that they might not have heard of. Of course, some communities might not consider environmental related career as a good one but without them, do we even have an environment suitable for humans? For instance, Environmental, Health and Safety (HSE) officers play an important role in making sure that modernization projects do not affect the environment. As a result, we still have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe till this day. To sum up, there are no perfect ways to save the Earth but here we are with our strong spirits and belief that Earth can survive. Young people should be worried about the Earth’s condition because we still have decades to live on it. Thus, we should be pioneers in saving the Earth so that the following generations can also experience the surreal beauty of nature. People of the near or distant future should never have to experience nature through a mere picture book or any other synthetic medium. Nature should always be something that anyone can experience whenever they so choose. Teoh Ren Nee 6A1 86

BAHASA INGGERIS Essay topic: How the pandemic has changed my life The whole planet has come to a halt and the cause is the pandemic Covid-19. Due to the unforeseen circumstances, it seems we are a part of a scary movie. The nefarious coronavirus is murdering thousands of people and we are feeling defenseless. It has turned our entity topsy-turvy. Even in our wildest dreams, we could not have visualized ourselves restricted to our homes, with no trips and unable to stay connected with our friends and relatives. I had a different prespective of the entire situation. In the opening, this lockdown was measured as holidays by some children like me. Once prolonged it has made me understand the advantage of attending schools. I cherished the struggles of my teachers who are putting their best to teach us through online classes and preparing us with study materials. Teachers will move heaven and earth so that we do not waste our valuable time being slothful. While at first taking online classes was a challenge for them, they have speedily adjusted to it. They adressed some of the common study problems that can afflict students at any stage in their education, and discuss some strategies for dealing with them. This has educated me never to avoid any difficulties in life and to try to adjust in accordance with the condition. During the difficult times, the pandemic has taught me the importance of essentials in our daily lives. I am acquiring new knowledge to respect our growers and the sellers who are bringing the necessities to our doorsteps. I have noticed that come daylight, the struggle for daily sustenance becomes obvious because many people go on an empty stomach each day. In addition, it has also taught me delectable food can be cooked at home too and living on junk food day in day out is not healthy for me. I have become more vigilant about personal hygiene and cleanliness. This lockdown has also made me respect my parents who make ends meet to satisfy my sometimes impractical demands.Hanging out with them gave me a chance to appreciate them too. Life does not only involve studies, TV and computer games. It is about compromising with each other during any stage of life. My parents also impart knowledge to me to value In a nutshell, this lockdown has taught me how to adapt to the challenging circumstances and learn to deal with the ordeal effectively. Name: Jethro Im Hong Yan Class: 1 Austin TIME MACHINE One Monday morning, Azray went to the market to run some errands for his mother. On his way home after doing the errands, he discovered a new antique shop just around the corner of a street close to his house. Azray got so excited as he loves collecting antiques. Azray decided to check out the shop since he was very curious and inquisitive to know what was inside the shop. There was a young man standing right in front of the door. He smiled and greeted Azray. The young man brought Azray and showed him around the shop. Azray was amazed looking at all the lovely rare antiques in that shop. As Azray was browsing through the antiques something caught his attention. It was an antique watch which Azray did not have in his collection. Azray decided to add that antique watch into his collection. He bought the watch and headed home. He was thrilled and excited to explore the antique watch. Once Azray reached home, he sorted out the groceries he got from the market and went to his room to fiddle with his antique watch. Azray was trying to figure out the functions of the buttons on the watch. He came across a strange and weird big red button on the watch. As soon as he pressed the red button a hologram appeared. Azray was shocked! On the screen of the hologram, it said ‘select date, time and year’. He figured out that this watch is a time machine and he could go back in time to know about the past or to the future to see what is in store. Azray remembered watching a movie which was about a time machine. Azray was in deep thoughts on what to do with the watch. In his mind, there were so many things running as to whether he should use the time machine or not. He had so many places he could go back in the past and was also curious to know what was in store for him in the near future. Just then, Azray’s mother called him to come down and have dinner together. Azray kept the watch in his drawer and went downstairs. Just as he sat at the dining table to have his dinner he spotted a family picture which was taken at Hong Kong Disneyland. Azray just smiled. Did he actually go back in time to relive his Disneyland moments? Only Azray would know. Name : Gajenranath Class : F1 Anselm |Date : 10th June, 2021 87

THE JOURNEY OF AN ASPIRING MUSICIAN As quoted by Stevie Wonder, music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand. It is not only a form of expression of your feelings but also a special type of medicine that could heal tormented souls. Essentially, to me, music is life. After all, even our hearts can’t help but letting out beats. I can’t live a day without music. Imagine a world without it, how dull would it be? I believe that it would be as dark as a starless sky on the night of an eclipse. All in all, music is love, love is music. I could feel the warmth of the golden rays that gently touched my face as I woke up to a soothing tune. It felt quite foreign to me as I was used to hearing my mother’s shrill voice bringing me out of slumber instead. It created a tranquil atmosphere, a bubble of impenetrable solace. I immediately rushed downstairs to find the source of the wonderful music. That’s when I came to realize that it is the sound of the piano that was being played by my cousin. The sunlight that flooded the room through the windows further brought out the brilliance of her performance. Without much hesitation, I decided to sit next to her just to catch every note of the lovely piece called River Flows in You. I, being a cheeky boy naturally started to press the keys at the edge of the piano. My cousin gave me a helpless smile but didn’t urge me to stop. She continued to play the piece as she was too immersed in it to pause. At that moment, I didn’t even have an inkling that this trivial incident was going to be a life changing spark. My parents were astonished to see their mischievous son quietly enjoying the music. That is when I got to know that music has been always a part of me since birth. On my first birthday, my parents asked my little self what I would like for my birthday. To their surprise, my chubby fingers pointed towards my cousin’s piano. That was when my parents bought me my first musical instrument, a keyboard. My music journey started thereafter. Taking into consideration about my passion and love towards music, my parents allowed me to take piano classes with Mr. Rex, my first piano teacher. He is a very compassionate and dedicated teacher. The endless hours of practising the piano bloomed into a love so deep and sacred for music. The joy and satisfaction each time I pressed the piano keys is an out of the world kind of experience regardless of the song I play. The sound of each key never fails to elevate my mood and give me peace of mind. Relentless effort, practice as well as failure accompanied me throughout the years. I always sought to break the norm such as playing same old nursery rhymes. I tried to play many songs by ear. Trying to match the melody with the actual song was a challenge I willingly took on. The absence of music sheets gave me more room to improvise and leave a trace of my unique style on the music. Furthermore, my parents took the liberty to set up a music studio in my home for me to compose proper music. As the years went by, my love and talent in music became more prominent. I started to do musical cover videos and unabashedly sent them to my relatives. Music can never be boring- believe me! People usually get tired if they stayed in the studio for a long period of time but that is not the case for me! I had a blast making music even if it took several hours to complete a single track. I wouldn’t mind living in my studio if my parents allowed me! To top it off, I would even watch YouTube videos to learn how to improve the quality of my music every single night before I turn in for the day. I had many sources of inspirations as I grew up with music. The awe-inspiring musicians who ignited my fierce passion for music are A.R.Rahman ,Lydian Nadhaswaram, Peter Buka and Santhesh. I would wake up and doze off to their songs. Sometimes, their music would even grace my dreams. My parents just shook their heads when I reenacted our phenomenal meetings from my dreams. I always pondered on what I can do to share a stage with them in the future. That is when my parents gave me the idea to post my music and covers on YouTube. We created a YouTube channel and Thiiran Studios was born. We started to post new covers diligently at least once every month. Recently, I even collaborated with a few of my friends to make a song cover. YouTube is the perfect platform to show the world what I am capable of. It is also a fabulous medium to inspire people to find their very own spark. It can be music, art or anything else, for that matter as long as it makes you happy. It will be quite the ride but I promise that it will definitely be worth the effort. I have always possessed a deep desire to learn all types of musical instruments, from Strings to Woodwinds. Besides piano, I am also learning the electric and acoustic guitar. Apart from western instruments, I took the initiative to learn Indian Classical Vocal, Carnatic theory for piano and ‘dholak’, a traditional Indian instrument. In the future, I am aiming to be a well-rounded musician in terms of producing music, becoming a dexterous pianist and sound engineering. How I wish I could be an Academy Award winning music composer in the near future. After all, dreams become reality when we put our minds to it. My dear friends, dare to dream and never stop searching for your LIFE CHANGING SPARK!!!! Thiiran Murugan 1 Anselm BAHASA INGGERIS 88
