NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

“The job is what you do when you are told what to do. The job is
showing up at the factory, following instructions, meeting spec,
and being managed. Someone can always do your job a little bet-
ter or faster or cheaper than you can. The job might be difficult,
it might require skill, but it’s a job. Your art is what you do when no
one can tell you exactly how to do it. Your art is the act of taking per-
sonal responsibility, challenging the status quo, and changing people.
I call the process of doing your art ‘the work.’ It’s possible to have a job
and do the work, too… The job is not the work.” – Seth Godin, Linchpin:
Are You Indispensable?

Our mission is to connect and build a bridge between artists and art lovers by providing and

tors or others taking pleasure in art and design.

This idea was embraced by 155 artists from 25 countries all over the world and this is why we

Born in Uzhorod, Ukraine in 1960, Joseph Coban moved with his family to Czechoslovakia
in 1972. Then, in 1999 he moved to Ottawa with his own family. As a graduate of three col-
leges in the Czech Republic, he studied art history, technology and design. Joseph updated his
education in 2002 at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Ottawa. After
years of working for companies in different fields, Joseph decided to try working on his own
and is now working on many projects and commissions, which involve a variety of aspects
to create artworks. Over the years his painting style and techniques have developed and

broadened. Joseph’s favorite style is realism and
portraiture, as well as that of old masters’ paint-
ings as they have stories and hidden messages
to tell. From one day to the next, Joseph is able
to switch to completely different subjects and
styles. He says, “Life would be very boring if
one does only one thing over again and again”.

Alexandra is primarily inspired by the beauty of nature around her. Her
tightly rendered flowers show a great attention to detail, an eye for de-
picting delicate petal textures, and a love for bright color combinations.
Light is a central theme in Alexandra’s paintings. The play of light and
shadow give her work great visual appeal and interest. Alexandra be-
lieves that works of art should be uplifting and stimulating to the senses.
Her aim is to captivate the viewer by capturing flowers in their most
vivid form.

he had a keen interest

childhood, he began
to paint in the eighties, attending a private
school in Florence. After four years spent in
school, he felt exhausted and went to hos-
pital for art therapy in painting. From 1994,
he paints again. His works during this peri-
od reflect a grande love for his family. For a
while he paints large canvases, especially in
remembrance of childhood memories, sensa-
tions and dreams: his virtual storytelling mix-
es fairytales with inner visions, combining
imperfection with sharpness and abstraction
with figurative. Sometimes feeling everything
farce around, Francesco is striving to find
sense in turmoil through painting.

SPB 05 I have always been interested in
oil on canvas art, spending hours drawing since
94x94 cm early childhood. I went to art col-

SPB 02 most important thing for me was
acrilic & oil on canvas to be able to develop my indi-

2011 the specific things taught there.
I work in oil or acrylic on can-
vas, and am inspired by the world
around me. I create landscapes
which sometimes verge on ab-
straction. I am continually search-
ing for perfection, not worrying
about particular subjects but rath-
er on composing something that is
‘right’ in an inexplicable sense.

This abstract series explodes across the
canvas thriving upon new and illumi-

modern paints, such as interference,
pearl, and chrome, with more tradi-
tional colours I’ve managed to create
a revolutionary concept of introspec-
tive depth. This gives an unprecedent-
ed element of movement and change
that cannot be captured on film. The
luminous pigments and reflections in
the paint cause it to glow and shift, en-
gaging the recipient with extraordinary
patterns that transform with light and
perspective.

Painter and Photographer, after a period living in Berlin, established her
atelier in Brasilia. Art critic Emanuel Von Lauenstein Massarani wrote:
“What is striking about the art of Analu Mikosz is the extreme coher-
ence of style which results from a previous painstaking analysis of forms.
Analu Mikosz creates a whole new world, where a sober and geometric
landscape comes to life by means of evanescent tones which articulate
a chromatic rhythm pattern. Gateways, arches, porticos, insinuate an
illusion of depth and a mysterious atmosphere. Her works achieves a
consistent symbiosis of two forms of expression: photography and paint-
ing.” Catalogued artist, One can find her works in art collections in Eu-

PhilipLawrenceSherrod www.philipsherrod.com

Hiromi Iuchi
79x46 inches

1995

Philip Lawrence Sherrod has been painting
raw, earthy expressionist pictures for more
than two decades. ERRATUM: 5*DEC-
ADES(!) Now that expressionism is back in
vogue, one would expect his work to be
hailed by critics as a typical manifestation
of the new spirit, but that hasn’t happened.
It may be that his work is too authentically
expressionist and that the new fashion in
expressionism calls for a self-conciousness
and hip reference to sources that Sher-
rod’s painting doesn’t contain. It isn’t that

his work is without
sources: Delacroix, Van Gogh, Ensor, Soutine come immediately to
mind. And it isn’t that he is naive; like most artists he takes what is useful
to him from imagery around him. But his paintings are direct expressions
of what is going on inside his mind. They are uncalculated, unedited,
and some-times almost unbearably vulgar outpourings of his psyche,
diametrically opposed to the contrived emotionalism of the more so-
phisticated ’neo-expressionists.’ Sherrod’s paintings/-often embarrass us,
for they allow us to peer more deeply into the churning mind of the
artist than is comfort-
able. There are feel-
ings and yearnings revealed that we would,
perhaps, rather not know about. But isn’t
that what authentic expressionism is really
about? Expressionism is not a particular
style or manner of painting, but a sponta-
neous outpouring of the ideas, images, and
emotions at the core of the artist’s life. That
is what Philip Sherrod is giving us; whether
we like it or not, whether the critics rec-
ognize him or not. It is the only way he
can paint. Excerpt from Foreword/-Sherrod
