30. ENABLING SPORTS TO BE SAFE AND ENJOYABLE SASMEC SPORTS MEDICINE INITIATIVE
Sports injuries among athletes and weekend warriors occur almost every day. As healthcare

quality service for them. SASMEC Sports Medicine Initiative is our Strategic Planning for
2021-2022 for Department of Orthopaedics. To avoid working in silo, formation of Sports
Medicine Team will be the initial part of the initiative, which will consist of sports medicine
specialist, sports surgeon, emergency physician, medical oficers, musculoskeletal radiologist,
physiotherapist and others. Collaboration with related external bodies such as Institut Sukan
Negara, Akademi Mokhtar Dahari, and Majlis Sukan Pahang will be made to promote our services
and create opportunities for knowledge transfer programs for our staffs and the
counterparts. Besides services and training, high quality researches and articles will be
produced and published in medical journals as well as in mainstream publications.

31. ISLAMIC SPIRITUAL CARE PROGRAM (INSPIRE)
Despite the beneit of good spiritual care toward speedy patient’s healing process, spiritual care
support is still a neglected service in medical care in Malaysia. Moreover, Islamic Spiritual Care
framework which is based on Shariah principles and teaching of Islam is not available and no
certiied courses and programs exist in the country. Burden to provide proper spiritual care must
be shouldered by not only medical staff, but also by community leaders, religious leaders or
volunteers in the community. It is a need for multi-disciplinary team approach to handle patients’
and relatives’ needs. SASMEC @IIUM Islamic Spiritual Care (INSPIRE) Program will proiling a
spiritual care service base on Islamic principles and teaching. As a major teaching hospital in the
region, SASMEC @IIUM will produce a highly skilled and experienced healthcare providers in
spiritual care through trainings and knowledge transfer in between the collaborators. As a
Shariah-based Quality Management certiied Hospital (MS ISO 1900:2014), it will give opportunity
to conduct high quality research in spiritual care support to patients, relatives and community.

32. SPORTS FOR ALL, ALL FOR SPORTS
The strains of modern day living, busy hectic lifestyles and the pressures of juggling a
demanding job, family and social life are unavoidable and the majority may not have time to involve
in physical activities. A hectic lifestyle that causes stress plays a major role in
responding to all the diseases whether it is diabetes, high blood pressure or mental illness. This is
rapidly growing in the age group of 20 to 40 years.
Therefore, Human Resource and General Administration Department is taking the initiative to
introduce “Sports for All, All for Sports” programme for all Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre
@IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM) staff. The main objective of this program is to get all SASMEC staff to
participate in the programme in order to improve their itness level and maintain good health.
Through this programme, it will create well-balanced lifestyle and positive working environment
among staff where they can enjoy their favorites sports or recreational activities at anytime and
anywhere.
Weight management, social interaction and enjoyment are common reasons for participation in
sport and physical activity. Concerns about good health and maintaining a slim body shape
motivated participation among SASMEC community. Apart from that, some identiied the
importance of sports and physical activities in staving off the effects of aging, maintaining good
health and providing a social support network. Challenges to identity such as having to show
others an unit body, lacking conidence and competence in core skills or appearing overly
masculine were barriers to participation.
Clearly, sports and physical activities can help everyone to reach their itness goals and
maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle and even make one happier. By the end of this
programme, we hope to document the Happiness and Wellbeing Indices which includes the 6
broad conceptual elements that encompass evaluative and experienced well-being, including
physical health, emotional health, healthy behaviors, work environment, basic access, and life
evaluation which relects happier and active community in SASMEC.

skills in MRIs and CT scan are one of the crucial skills that are needed in radiology area in order to

37. ANNUAL BASIC NATIONAL OCULAR BIOMETRY COURSE

Precise biometry is essential for accurate outcomes in cataract and refractive surgeries. The
measurement of axial length by ultrasound was the gold standard for many years. With the
introduction of optical biometry in the US in the year 2000, this technology has become more
popular and is now the most common method for the measurement of axial length. Optical
biometry uses a partially coherent wave that has approximately 9 times the resolution of a 10 MHz
sound wave, making the measurement of axial length very precise. It helps to avoid operator
variations in measurement and also to increase the accuracy. Due to the important knowledge in
the ophthalmology area, Department of Ophthalmology is looking forward to initiate organizing
the course yearly.
