(The Shepherd Boy and The Wolf)

There was once a young Shepherd Boy
who tended his sheep at the foot of a
mountain near a dark forest. It was
rather lonely for him all day, so he
thought upon a plan by which he could
get a little company and some
excitement.

ครั้งหนึ่ ง มีเด็กเลี้ยงแกะซึ่งอายุยังน้ อยผู้
หนึ่ ง ทำการดูแล (ฝูง) แกะของเขาอยู่ที่เชิง
เขาใกล้กับป่าทึบ เขารู้สึกค่อนข้างจะเหงาใจ
อยู่ตลอดวัน ดังนั้ นเขาจึงคิดแผนการณ์ขึ้น
อย่างหนึ่ ง ซึ่งแผนการณ์นี้ จะช่วยให้เขามี
เพื่อนแก้เหงา และมีความสนุกได้บ้าง

He rushed down towards the village calling out Wolf, Wolf. And the villagers
came out to meet him, and some of them stopped with him for a
consideration time. This pleased the boy so much that a few days afterwards
he tried the same trick, and again the villagers came to his help.

เขารีบวิ่งไปยังหมู่บ้าน พร้อมกับร้องขึ้นว่า (ช่วยด้วย) หมาป่า (มาแล้ว)
ช่วยด้วย หมาป่ามาแล้ว ฝ่ายพวกชาวบ้านก็ออกมาหาเขา (จะช่วยเหลือ) และบางคนก็
อยู่ด้วยกับเขาเป็นเวลานาน สิ่ งนี้ ทำให้เด็ก (เลี้ยงแกะ) คนนั้นพอใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง
ดังนั้นอีกไม่กี่วันต่อมา เขาจึงเล่นตลกเหมือนเดิมอีก และก็อีกนั่นแหละ ที่ชาวบ้านได้
ออกมาเพื่อจะช่วยเขา

But shortly after this a wolf actually did came out from the forest and began to worry the
sheep, and the boy of course cried out wolf, wolf” still louder than before.
ครั้นหลังจากคราวนี้ ไม่นาน หมาป่าตัวหนึ่ งได้ออกมาจริงๆ จากป่า แล้วก็เริ่มรบกวนฝูงแกะ แน่ นอน…
เด็กคนนั้ นก็ร้องออกไปว่า “ช่วยด้วยหมาป่ามาแล้ว ช่วยด้วยหมาป่ามาแล้ว โดยร้องดังยิ่งกว่าคราวก่อนอีก

But the villagers, who had fooled twice
before, thought the boy was again
deceiving them, and nobody stirred to
come to his help. So the wolf made a
good meal off the boy’s flock.

แต่คราวนี้ พวกชาวบ้าน ซึ่งถูกหลอกมาสองค
รั้ง ต่างก็คิดว่าเด็กคนนั้ น กำลังหลอกลวง
พวกตนอีก จึงไม่มีใครโผล่หัวออกมาช่วยเขา
อีก ด้วยเหตุนี้ หมาป่าจึงได้กินอาหารอร่อย
ปากจากฝูงแกะของเด็กคนนั้ น

นิทานเรื่องนี้ สอนให้รู้ว่า (Moral of the story)
“Liars are not believed even when they speak the truth.”
“ผู้ที่กล่าวเท็จจะไม่ได้รับความเชื่อถือไว้ใจ …ถึงแม้ว่าเขาได้พูดความจริงก็ตาม”
