Greenway Forest
By: Anika Brown
I was on my way to Florida for the
winter. I had been planning this trip
since last winter, so I was determined
to go, and I did not want anything to
get in the way. I had to wake up at
3:00 am to go to the airport, and to
catch my flight on time. My flight
leaves at 4:00 am, so I was in a little
rush. It takes an hour to get there.
I got there at 3:59 am, I was so relieved
that I got there on time. So I got on the
plane, and it was a little strange because
on the outside of the plane there were
leaves and trees painted on it. I just got
on and did not care about what I saw
outside. I was just so relieved that I had
made it in the nick of time.
I tried to open my eyes a little more
to see where my seat was. I
eventually found it and sat down,
and then this mean, grumpy, old lady
came up behind me and whacked me
in the back of the head with her
purse. I sat up as quickly as I could
and rubbed my head.
She said that her name was
Mrs.Stump and that she was going to
the Greenway Forest to get away from
the children that she has at her
orphanage. If I am being completely
honest right now, I do not think that
the children will stay at the
orphanage this whole time, but
something more caught me off guard.
I thought I had heard her say,
Greenway Forest. So I had to ask
again where she said that she was
going, but before I did I had to
protect myself from being attacked.
So I went up to her and tapped her
on the shoulder lightly and ducked
down right away in case she decided
to take a swing at me.
Lucky, she did not; she just looked at me
all mad and annoyed. So once I had
gained the confidence to ask her, I did in
a very high-pitched voice trembling
every word, and she said once more,
¨Greenway Forest.¨
I ran to the door, but it was too late. The
plane had already taken off. I was on my
way to Greenway Forest. I knew something
would get in the way, but I did not think it
would be something this major. I sat down
on the correct seat this time and thought to
myself this is the worst experience ever. I
missed my flight, and I got hit in the head
by a grumpy old lady who has some
attitude.
Why?
When we got to the forest, I got all of
my luggage from the plane, except for
my suitcase with all of my swimming
things: such as snorkels, and swimsuits,
towels, and goggles. Not that I need that
stuff anyway.
I was really hoping that that grumpy,
mean, old, annoying, scary lady was not
going to the same place as me. She was
not thankful. “Wheeo!” I got put in the
smallest tent because I was one person. I
thought that that was just crazy! I have a
lot of luggage if they can not tell. So I
need my space.
Once I got settled in, I asked a person
who works here at the camp, “Hi! Are
there any good places like hiking
trails around here?”
The person responded, “Yes! In
fact, we are known for all of the
trails.”
So then I responded, “Oh, okay.
Thank you for your help!” and off I
went.
As I was heading back to my cabin I ran
into that mean, old, annoying, scary lady
again. It was like she was looking for me.
LIke she wanted revenge for me
accidentally sitting in her seat. I thought
that she had already gotten her revenge
when she whacked me in the back of the
head with her purse. So I tried to hide,
and I think I succeeded because she did
not see me.
Once I got my hiking shoes on and
grabbed my water, I started on a trail. I
found this one that was really open just
in case I needed someplace to hide
from that mean, old, annoying, old,
scary lady, and I could see her coming
if she did find me.
I found this good place to stop and sit
down and drink some water for a little
while by a tree. I mean it looked like a
regular old tree. Green leaves, a brown
tree trunk. So I grabbed my water and
tried to take a drink but nothing came out.
It turned out that I had grabbed the water
bottle that had no water in it.
“How stupid can I be?” I thought to
myself. Then I realized that it was so
peaceful out here and quiet that I
could take a nap. I have never taken
a nap before because I am always so
busy with work that when I do get
home it is time that I should go to
bed because I have to wake up early
in the morning to get to work.
Anyways, I just started to relax and
think about nothing
Then all of a sudden I heard this noise. It
was coming from a bush. It was green and
had some red in it. I think it was poison ivy,
but we will never find out because I am not
going near it unless of course I really need
to. I did not know how long it had been, but
it felt like it had only been 1 minute. I looked
down, and I still had on my green shorts,
grey t-shirt, and my Nike tennis shoes. I also
still had on my black sunglasses which I
was relieved because those cost a fortune.
The noise had stopped a little bit and then it
started up again.
SHHHHHHH!!!
At first, I thought that it was
Mrs.Stump so I said, “Mrs.Stump is
that you?” but no response.
So I asked again, “Mrs. Stump if
that is you?” I asked, “If that is I am
not scared!”
Is that
you?
Totally lying to myself. I decided to be a
brave 31-year-old man and walk up to it as
if I did not care. As I was walking up to the
bush the sound just got louder and louder. I
was trembling in my shoes, I thought if I
trembled any more my shoes would fall off. I
reached my hand out to the bush ready to
move it to see what was making the noise,
but before I did that I needed a little pep
talk. “You are brave, strong, too young to die
young man!” I know not the world's most
convincing pep talk but it worked because I
moved the bush and there right in front of
my eyes was a …
Right in front of my eyes was a police officer.
So as a polite 31 year old man, I decided to
ask what she was doing here. “Hi! Police
officer, what are you doing here?” I asked. He
responded, “I am hiding from Mrs.Stump ever
heard of her?”. I said “Have I heard of her?
She whacked me in the back of the head on
the plane!” He said, “Really, she yelled at me
for losing one of her children witch she let
out of the orphanage.” We both agreed that
she was crazy. So after we talked for a little
bit we decided to go back to the campsite and
eat something.
As we were walking back to the campsite, we
ran into the mean, grumpy, old, annoying lady.
Mrs.Stump was acting a little bit weird which
was hard to tell because she's well, she’s
Mrs.Stump. Surprisingly, she came up to us and
asked us if we wanted to go have lunch
together. I was about to say, ¨Maybe let me ask
the police officer.¨ But before I did, I was going
to ask him. He was nowhere in sight. I thought
he had run back to the tent because he was
scared of Mrs.Stump. So I went back to the tent
and he was not there. Nowhere in sight. So I
left it and went back to Mrs.Stump to tell her an
answer.
I said, ¨Yes,¨ because she asked so
nicely, but I had a plane.
I was going to go to lunch and then
tell her I will be right back, but then
never come back. That lady is so creepy.
I told myself that if I ever saw her
again, I would have nightmares.
That was the last time I ever saw
Mrs.Stump. Thankfully!!!!
The
End!!!
