LE FREAK LOUNGE
SUMMER BENEFIT

To celebrate JAS’ 25th Anniversary, the Ranch of Soledad and Bob Hurst was transformed into
the Le Freak Lounge, featuring the best freakin’ dance party in JAS’ history. The night started with
a beautiful cocktail hour on the lawn looking at the pristine views of Aspen and then the big
unveiling of the lounge struck as Christian McBride started his DJ set. Event Co-Chairs,
Rick Crandall and Laura Welch, did an amazing job in creatively designing a chic lounge with
the help of Shawn Thomson and her team at Rocky Mountain Connections. Very appropriately,
Kathryn Fleck Peisach, 25 for 25 Honorary Chair, introduced the video that showcased a
few of the highlights of the 25 years of JAS. Then, Jim Horowitz, the President/CEO, stood and
honored Tom Bailey and Mark Whiston of Janus, JAS’ Title Sponsor from 1994 – 2005. Janus
was instrumental in building the steel girders of JAS as an established not-for-profit organization
in Aspen/Snowmass. It was a heartfelt night of gratitude to those that have supported JAS in its
25 years. Not to miss a beat, as soon as the speeches were over, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers
hit the main stage for an unforgettable performance that went into the late hours of the night.

JUNE
EXPERIENCE

Benedict Music Tent: June 24-July 6, 2015

The 25th Anniversary JAS June Experience was an outstanding kick-off to a
very memorable season! Friday’s double bill started with the Count Basie

Orchestra (who performed at JAS’ very first festival in 1991) with special guests
Kurt Elling and Roberta Gambarini, in a tribute to Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday,

followed by a later performance from Maceo Parker.

On Saturday sold-out crowds enjoyed hits from Chicago, while Sunday saw hundreds of
attendees dancing on the stage during the Rodrigo y Gabriela performance,
following the return of the acapella vocal wizardry of Naturally 7.

The annual collaboration between JAS & the Aspen Music Festival & School featured
Wynton Marsalis & the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, in a July 4th weekend
concert of jazz and the Great American Songbook.

The Free Lawn Party attracted hundreds of guests with live music, food and drinks,
creating a lively atmosphere on the AMFS grounds.

LABOR DAY This year’s JAS Labor Day Experience sold a
EXPERIENCE record number of three-day general admission
passes AND Patron (VIP) tickets. Overall
Snowmass Town Park: attendance numbers were similar to 2014, with
September 4-6, 2015 the big difference lying in the fact that all three
days were equally popular and close in sales.
With the Patron Tent having sold-out the prior two
years, JAS expanded the size, thereby increasing
the capacity to 1,750 people per day. With the
addition of new Patron amenities, the increase
worked well. As did the new “JAS Lift” which
was added onto the Silver Patron Patio, giving
attendees a better sight-line of the main stage.
All three days received high marks on event
surveys for both the performances themselves and
the overall ticket value. 83% of attendees felt the

ticket price was fair based on their experience,
up from 72% in 2014. Additionally 74%
of attendees plan to attend next year’s
event, compared to 65% the
year prior.

Fashion Show looks. Only Aspen and
Chamonix had access to this preview.
The collection was stunning and a
portion of the proceeds benefited JAS.

25TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECTS

Two very important projects took place in 2015 to help JAS celebrate our 25th Anniversary. First was the publication,
“25 Years of Jazz Aspen Snowmass,” a hard-cover, coffee table book featuring photos from staff photographer
Steve Mundinger, and stories from JAS Founder/President Jim Horowitz. The book was a gift to the many people who
helped JAS to get where we are today, as well as a selling point for future sponsors and donors.
Additionally JAS produced a 25th Anniversary Video with the assistance of Andrea Booher. The video
(which featured JAS friends, staff, former artists and students) premiered at the “Le Freak Lounge” Summer Benefit.
