LEARNING & GATHERING

Jazz Vocal Icon Billie Holiday, 1952 ASPEN 1952

In the early 1950’s Aspen, Chicago visionaries

Walter & Elizabeth Paepke invited

great musicians, thinkers, designers and
world-leaders from Stravinsky to Schweitzer and
more, for creation, reflection & dialogue...the

birth of the Aspen Idea: Mind, Body &
Spirit. Meanwhile in 1952, the Red Onion

(built 1892) quietly achieved international
recognition presenting such iconic jazz legends as

Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar
Peterson and Ray Brown...suggesting that
jazz itself was a great American art form

and deserved a seat at the table.

A HISTORIC ASPEN GEM

VISION

Decades later, the JAS Center will be a new, permanent year-round
multi-purpose Creative Sanctuary. Imagine live music spilling out into
Aspen’s pedestrian core throughout the week. With flexible layout capabilities,
the JAS Center is a space for Legendary artists recording albums one week
and Music education classes the next. Interspersed between, there will be
TED Talk style meetings or gatherings of other community
not-for-profits…all seated, standing or both. All these programs will be backed by
21st century broadcast capabilities to fuel wider learning and engage new
audiences. The JAS Center will infuse Aspen’s core with new vitality and energy,

touching residents & visitors. Re-Imagining the Red Onion and creating a permanent seat at the

table for jazz & related forms of music for generations to come.

IMPACT

Your gift can help transform one of the last downtown historic
Aspen gems into a vital, year-round performance and recording
center and community gathering space. The JAS Center will positively:

» Enhance the Vitality of the Aspen Core through increasing cultural

and performance capacity to over 300+ days/nights of diverse annual usage.

» Drive Student Music Education through a permanent education and

recording center for both year-round local students and the all-scholarship
summer JAS Academy.

» Creating Recording & Broadcasting capabilities that will establish

the JAS Center as a nationally recognized venue.

» Support the Music Loving Community by providing a unique

performance center for diverse genres of music in the Aspen core.

» Include Residents and Visitors by offering a venue for multiple,

diverse community uses including meetings, seminars and special events.

PLAN

JAS is under contract to purchase the existing 2nd floor of the historic Red Onion building,
plus the adjacent spaces and the street level entrance that will all be remodeled to create

the JAS Center. The JAS Center will serve multiple uses including:

» Year-round Programming: Ultimately, JAS projects 300+ days/nights of annual

usage. JAS plans to significantly increase its own programming “of jazz & related forms of music”,
while also opening excess capacity for other organizations and individuals to use.

» JAS Recording Studio: A “Creative Sanctuary” equally for pop stars, legendary artists and

emerging next gen stars, the JAS Center will establish a world-class “destination recording studio”, with
multi-space production facilities. The studio is inspired by the handful of iconic, principally metropolitan
studios world-wide combining a “live room” (the JAS Café) & adjacent studio under one roof.

JAS aspires to create the same world-wide reputation for excellence in its recording projects as it has
achieved for its “live” concert presentations over 30 years of programming.

» JAS Local Music Education Initiatives: Create a space to host rehearsals,

lessons and performances for students and adults year-round.

» JAS Academy: Acquire a permanent home for the prestigious all-scholarship summer

JAS Academy presented by Jazz Aspen Snowmass in collaboration with Frost School of Music at the
University of Miami, under the direction of JAS Artistic Director Christian McBride and Frost Dean
Shelly Berg. The JAS Academy is supported annually by a multi-year gift from Sasha and Ed Bass, and
takes place in a variety of locations.

» JAS Café Performances: Expand dates from its current 36 nights annually winter and

summer to ultimately increasing to 75+ nights, including more weekend nights, holidays and prime
time, which currently are not feasible with existing venue partnerships.

» Programming for Next Generation Listeners: Expanding performance

programming aimed at introducing a younger audience to jazz and related forms of music with
accessible pricing. Plus, adding a recording studio with multi media capabilities to create an enticing
environment for student engagement.

» Event Space: With a capacity of (200) seated, or, (250-350) cocktail style, the JAS Center,

with its full Catering capabilities and permanent stage/sound/lights will be a one-of-a-kind Aspen

core venue. A much-needed venue for JAS collaborations with other not-for-profit
organizations, as well as for rental/usage for corporate, municipal or hosted private gatherings.

» Community Gathering: Create a space that is available to the public to mingle and enjoy

music on the many nights that aren’t programmed with private or ticketed events.

» Gallery: Add a 2nd floor above its entrance with a terrace to create a two-story Gallery hosting

rotating thematic exhibits of memorable Artist performances drawn from JAS’ 30 years of archived
photos, as well as, visiting iconic music photography collections.
