JAS ACADEMY

World-renowned bassist and 6-time Grammy winner
Christian McBride returned to his role as the JAS Academy
Artistic Director, leading 21 talented young jazz musicians
in the new Academy “Big Band” curriculum. Students
worked with McBride and other Jazz “Masters” including
Dianne Reeves, Shelly Berg, Benny Green, Russell Malone,
Peter Martin, Rey Sanchez, Terreon Gully and Reginald
Veal in this week-long all-scholarship program. The week
concluded with a live Big Band performance at the JAS Café
featuring the students under McBride’s direction.

JAS plans to enhance and expand the Academy residency
in association with the prestigious Frost School of Music
at The University of Miami starting in 2019. Under the
direction of 5-time Grammy nominee Dean Shelly Berg, the
Frost School of Music has become a nationally recognized
program for its focus on producing successful musicians
trained not just in performance but in the business of
music. The goal is to ultimately extend the Academy into a
summer long program.

JUNE

EXPERIENCE

Benedict Music Tent • June 21-30, 2018

A reformation of the JAS June Experience saw one less evening headliner at the Benedict
Tent, an additional JAS Café performance and the return of the free Gospel Brunch.
The Experience kicked-off on Thursday, June 21 at the JAS Café Upstairs at the Aspen
Art Museum featuring saxophone/vocalist Grace Kelly.

The following evening included a special presentation of “New Voices” at the Benedict
Music Tent in Aspen with performances from vocalist Lizz Wright and the Broadway
production of “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom, Jr. with special guest students of the Aspen
Music Festival & School. On Saturday Lyle Lovett made his return to JAS, this time with his
Large Band, including vocalist Francine Reed.

Based on previous years sales, JAS opted to move the Sunday night performance into the
JAS Café at the Cooking School of Aspen, with shows featuring Raul Midon. Earlier that day
Raul participated in a special Listen Up! artist talk with JAS President Jim Horowitz during
brunch in the VIP tent prior to the free gospel concert.

The following week included two nights of music at the JAS Café Downstairs at The Little Nell
with Canadian pianist/vocalist Laila Biali, and a collaboration with the Aspen Music Festival
& School at the Benedict Tent on Saturday, June 30: A Tribute to Ray Charles, featuring the
8-time Grammy winning acapella group Take 6 along with other special guests.

JAS once again hosted a free nightly lawn party on the Music Tent grounds June 21-22 prior
the main stage acts, along with brunch on Sunday.

LABOR DAY

EXPERIENCE

Snowmass Town Park
August 31 - September 2, 2018

It was a record-breaking season for the JAS Labor Day Experience which hosted its first ever
THREE DAY SELL-OUT for both general admission and VIP tickets! However, actual attendance
for the three days was closer to 26,000 vs. the 30,000 tickets sold, largely due to inclement
weather on the Friday night Lionel Richie show.

Three-day pass sales were once again up from the previous year with over 5,178 sold!

A new entrance and transportation system, put in place for public safety reasons, was tested
immediately during an emergency weather evacuation on the first night of the festival, which
cut Lionel Richie’s performance short. JAS has received much feedback based on attendee
experiences during the evacuation and was able to make immediate adjustments on Saturday.
Further public safely meetings are taking place this Fall to solidify the best possible evacuation
plans should we ever be faced with a similar scenario.

The new entrance did provide an opportunity for guests to enjoy the JAS Village for an
additional hour each day before the main field was open. Attendees were able to enjoy food
and beverages from the many vendors on-site, while also shopping and participating in various
sponsor activation areas.

Also new this year, JAS erected the “Upper Deck,” a private hospitality area in the VIP tent
reserved for JAS National Council members and sponsors. The deck offered ideal views of the
stage and site and will become a permanent part of the VIP experience moving forward.

The JAS Café continues to be one of the
fastest growing new cultural experiences
in Aspen. Over 6,500 attendees enjoyed
music this year in multiple intimate
venues in Aspen and Basalt: Downstairs at
The Little Nell and Cooking School of Aspen,
Upstairs at the Aspen Art Museum and
at The Temporary in Basalt.

JAS has long dreamed of finding a
permanent home for the JAS Café and the
numerous JAS In-Schools music education
programs that take place annually. That
dream will soon become a reality with the
purchase of a new building in the Aspen
Core, which will incorporate the upstairs
portion of the historic Red Onion Building
with new construction on either side.
The new JAS Café & Learning Center is
scheduled to open in 2021! Stay tuned for
updates on this exciting new development!
