CHEF ALEXANDER KIM began his cooking career
following a grand tour of great European kitchens and
two apprenticeships working with the inspiring and
notable French chefs Paul Bocuse and Roger Verge.
Upon returning to Colorado in 1985, Chef Kim was
selected in 1988 by the Grand Chefs of America for “Finest
Restaurant – Outstanding Chef 1987–1988.” Following his
heart to the mountains in the early ’90s, he accepted
a position as executive chef of Syzygy in Aspen, where
he was selected by Distinguished Restaurants of North
America to receive the “DiRoNA Award” in 1993 and 1994.
Alex was also selected as “Discovery Chef of 1994” by the
James Beard Foundation.

In 1995, Alex and his wife Laura decided to diversify
their cooking and hospitality talents and start their
catering company: Fusion Design and Catering. With
a notable background as a manager in the restaurant
and nightclub industry since the early ’80s, Laura takes
care of the business details from beginning to end.

For the Kims, cooking is art. Their boutique catering
business model and philosophy is “one of a kind, one
at a time.” Celebrating 26 years of professional catering
in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley, Fusion describes
their style of cooking with their love for many cuisines: a
harmonious blend of colors, textures, tastes, and aromas
together with a mixture of cooking techniques and
ingredients obtained locally and from around the world.

CHICAGO DRAMATURGY CHICAGO: GIN, GUNS & GLAMOUR

By Vanessa Vivas,
Directing and Writing Apprentice

The potent cocktail mix of Prohibition, the suffrage movement, and the Jazz Age left a bittersweet
taste in the mouths of the inhabitants of Chicago, kindling the “women in murder” phenomenon that
lives on through the voices of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly in the Tony-Award winning musical Chicago.
These women were based on the real murderers that captivated the entire city as they blurred the lines
between celebrity and criminal. The sensation grew to such an extent the women claimed, “Murderess
Row”, their own section in the Cook County Jail. Their allure razzle dazzled the rest of the 20th century
into a new cultural zeitgeist: to sensationalize, rather than villainize.

Befitting of their celebrity, the ambiance in “Murderess Row” was comparable to an afternoon in a salon.
The women would receive gifts, flowers, fan mail, and attention from newspapers. There was a lingering
instinct that beautiful women would never be prosecuted by an all-male jury.

The Chicago Tribune, a male-dominated
workplace at the time, shifted its
attention to female reporters, to gage
a “female perspective” on the cases.
However, the Chicago Tribune would
commonly side with the prosecution,
writing in favor of their conviction.
Conversely, the Hearst Papers would
side with the defense, focusing their
stories on the women, rather than
the victim. The term “sob sisters”
gained popularity as these female
reporters would emphasize the human-
interest perspective, highlighting
empathy and sentimentality in their
journalistic coverage.

One particular Chicago Tribune reporter
named Maurine Dallas Watkins, did the
exact opposite. She went to “Murderess
Row” to interview multiple criminal
celebrities in hopes of writing a piece
that would incriminate them in the eyes
of the public. Her writings became a
play titled Brave Little Women, later
renamed Chicago.

Beyond the courts of the Windy City
nearly 100 years ago, modern society
remains obsessed with fame, greed,
superficiality, all that jazz. These eternal
qualities are immortalized through the
talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb, Bob
Fosse, and now Theatre Aspen.

OUT OF REAL ESTATE ...

CALL DOUG LEIBINGER

“Doug is world class. This is a competitive market, and it pays to
work with people who have an unparalleled understanding of each
micro-location. Understanding the details, knowing all the players,
investing time in each client — you can’t ask for more in real estate.
And, on top of bringing expertise and savvy, it was actually a lot of

fun working with Doug and his team!”
