Cruises), explains why cruise lines have upped
the ante when it comes to on-board activities.
Choosing a cruise ship these days can be tough. They
all offer pretty spectacular activities and entertainment.
You may still encounter traditional on-board activities on a
cruise line—croquet, anyone?—however cruise ships have
expanded way beyond simply adding a basketball court
to attract younger guests. People are so much more active
than they used to be, not to mention the way we travel has
evolved and changed. Cruise lines, therefore, realize that if
they want to capture a new clientele and appease an existing
fan base—and to keep them all coming back—they need
to make sure there is enough to keep guests of all ages
entertained and engaged.
From families with small children, right up to the zoomers, NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE
here is a mere sampling of all the fabulous activities there
are to enjoy these days on a cruise ship. Many activities
are included in your ticket (check to see if they require
reservations), while others may require an extra fee.
Princess Cruises tailors its activities to the destination because
it believes “live performances, music and dance lessons,
local foods and more will give you a deeper connection
to the places you visit.” For example, you can learn to play
the ukulele in Hawaii or take street pan drum lessons in the
Caribbean.

Hanoi’s French influence blends in with
the rest of the city’s bustling culture
Words and photos by Diane Slawych
O n one of Hanoi’s main thoroughfares, a group of
friendly-looking Vietnamese youths are holding up a
sign that grabs my attention: “Ask me anything,” it reads.
I had been circling the neighbourhood searching for
the Weekend Night Market and I find their presence a
welcome sight.
Eager to help, they cheerfully point me in the
direction of Hang Dao Street, but not before answering a
long list of other questions from where to get a quick bite to eat, to what time the water puppet
show takes place, all of which they answered capably and in perfect English. Then they
had questions for me. Where was I from and how did I manage to get around on my own in
countries where I didn’t speak the language? “I ask people like you,” I replied simply.
Minutes later, I’m haggling at a brightly lit stall selling beautiful purses embroidered
with flowers. In between fruit vendors attired in their conical hats and shops piled high with
neon-coloured pollution masks (the air quality can be stifling at times), I find racks of elephant
pants—loose, cotton garments imprinted with images of the pachyderm that so many tourists
seemed to be wearing.
I was in Hanoi on the final stop of a 15-day Viking River Cruise along the Mekong
River. Our introduction to the city began with an electric car ride through the Old Quarter with
its narrow alleys, tall slender buildings known as tube houses and tiny shops crammed with
every type of merchandise imaginable. At outdoor eateries, adults sat in kid-sized plastic
chairs while motorbikes zipped in and out of traffic. The bustling scene was a shock to the
senses after days on the tranquil Mekong.

pretty fountains. No wonder Princess Caroline

sales of rosés have surpassed sales of white wines.
Various combinations of family members also go
on day trips, including to the Camargue and the
hilltop town of Les Baux, with its spectacular views
of rolling vineyards. The latter is about 30 minutes

a medieval stronghold around the 12th century,
it’s been named one of the most beautiful villages
in France. The children all love exploring the
crumbling Les Baux-de-Provence fortress (and
are treated to bonbons from one of the charming
shops, too).

to stroll or bike for our daily baguettes, what’s better than being able to sip a
glass of wine or two over a lingering lunch in a café without having to worry
about driving back?) The villa was just a 15-minute bike ride from the village
of Eygalières—home to Chappelle Saint-Sixte, a 12th century chapel made
famous by van Gogh, who painted it in 1890.
The villa is breathtaking. There’s a main building with five bedrooms and
three bathrooms, plus two additional, stone-turreted buildings, each with
a couple of bedrooms and a bathroom to accommodate a family of three
or four. The expansive grounds, full of June blooms, are like something out
of an impressionist painting. This is entirely fitting, given that the beauty
of Provence has often been depicted by artists, including Cézanne, Renoir,
Matisse and many others. The property features statuary, an area to play
boules and countless rows of fragrant lavender just coming into bloom. And
the pool! Needless to say, it becomes the focal point for us all when we need
respite from the desert-dry heat.
The family also makes the most of the patio’s large stone barbecue for al
fresco dinners. Some mornings, a few of us bicycle to the corner
boulangerie for breakfast coffees and pain au chocolat. Other days, we
venture out to a winery. My husband and I manage to grab a romantic lunch
one day at a pretty café on Eygalières’ main street that features simple dishes
with deliciously Provençal accents, such as a warm goat’s cheese salad with
olives and fresh herbs. One evening, we go en masse to the village’s Brasserie
du Progrès, which serves up French classics: prix fixe meals that even the
kids love (I choose velouté au légumes, steak frites and crème brûlée—how
French is it that?). We also enjoy beautiful Provençal wines, which are so
