CN INSIDER

The month of November was memorable due to multiple reasons. The final event of
SUWA was held in Seewali Maha Vidyalaya in Wanathamulla . It marked the end of
a successful project by the organizing committee of SUWA. Multiple Outgoing Global
Teacher and Talent realizations in the month of November showcased the unwavering
commitment and enthusiasm of the leadership Body and the membership of the Outgoing
Global Teacher and Talent function. The interactive IR events such as Lost in Paradise
and Story land by the Outgoing Global Volunteer Function enhanced the cross cultural

understanding of the involved parties.
Last but not least, after a long and a challenging process the Executive Board for the term

22/23 was elected.

As the primary goal and vision for their term, the Executive Board 2008/09 was focusing more on the
number of exchanges they could realize within their time as they strategically utilized AIESEC’s capacity to
facilitate student exchanges. Led by Mr.Akila Wijeratne, the Local Committee President for the said term,

the Executive Board worked as a closely knit team with a goal that was collectively aimed by them.
In terms of the new initiatives they introduced within the term, they could efficiently plan out the recruitment
process in order for the new members to strongly grasp the essence of AIESEC and its core values. Similarly,
their efforts made way to the achievement of numerous realizations which made way to the present state
and growth of the Local Committee as a strong entity. The foundation laid by their inputs has evolved itself
into the base that keeps AIESEC in Colombo North a highly potential entity. According to Mr.Akila, it is
their inputs to the current membership that they take up every single opportunity offered by AIESEC to get
inspired and continue to live a successful yet a vibrant life. Their legacy continues to influence the future of
the entity to perform even better through the examples set by them as they maintained an impressive and

suwa

Project “SUWA ‘’ is the largest CSR project that was initiated by AIESEC in University of Kelaniya. The
project was based on SDG goal 06: Clean water & Sanitation. However, other than focusing on the said SDG,
the Organizing Committee also creatively implemented the initiatives that acted as portals to showcase the

creativity of the general community.
Consequently, the project included a timely webinar series and after the series of the said virtual events,
the project was conducted and concluded physically at “Seewali Vidyala”, Vanathamulla. The webinar series
was implemented with a children’s day event with the participation of 1500+ children across the country.
Following that event, a novel webinar called “suwa manasak” was held on the 04th of October as it intended

mainly to promote the importance and maintenance of optimum mental health among its audience.

13

ISSUE VII | NOVEMBER 2021

The Organizing Committee then included a webinar session on the timely and less discussed topic: “female
hygiene education” on the 08th of October to the series which was called “Yeheliya”. Similarly, with the aid
of Dilah Conservations, the valued partner of project “Suwa’’, the sub project “Green Heart” was held on
the 13th of October along with the participation of numerous school children who gained many valuable
insights by being a part of such an innovative initiative. Furthermore, a panel discussion under the name
“Suwa Wiwarana ‘’ is intended to be held under the objective of creating awareness on SDG 06: Clean water
& Sanitation. There will be informative discussions on soil transmitted helminth disease to plan out effective

precautions for this disease.

14

The project “SUWA ‘’ was eventually concluded by providing essential sanitary facilities to Seewali Central
College wanathamulla as a great community service initiative. On the 10th of November 2021, the school
was gifted with liquid hand sanitizer, surgical masks as well as sweets for the young school children. They
also provided free sanitary napkins for school girls of and above Grade 06 as a core initiative of the whole
project. In addition, upon the valued request of the principal, the Organizing Committee provided the

school with an up to date lawn mower that was received under a mutually content situation.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the project contributed highly to recognizing the intellectual skills of
its audience through a poetry, photography, quiz and a drawing competition of which the winners were
awarded with valuable e-certificates. The resilient contribution of the OC members as well as the valued
contribution of the event partners helped make the event an astounding success as it was a project of longer
duration. It is with pleasure that the entity acknowledges its presence as a great opportunity for the growth
of AIESEC in University of Kelaniya and hence the potential of Incoming Global Volunteer function as a

space full of unique individuals.

the core contributors of it.

4. During your EB term, have you been through hardships, if yes what kept you going?
The days were really challenging in every aspect especially in consideration of the
civil war going on and the economic implications coming along with that. AIESEC
was small back then, not many members. The best recruitment campaign we ran
was able to attract 40 members but we had only less than 10 active members halfway
in the term. That small membership was a closely knit family. We knew everything
about each other, their likes, dislikes, passions, strengths, weaknesses, about their
families… We worked together, had fun together, shared sorrows together.

You all got to experience every single element of
AIESEC and you don’t know what you are missing
until you do all that. Go to an induction day, work
in a project, take up a leadership role, go for an
exchange, party with AIESECers, go on trips with
AIESECers, go for an airport pickup, don’t miss
a single conference, write a sugar cube, date an
AIESECer, sit around with some alumni and listen
to them bragging and the list goes on.

6. How do you think AIESEC helps one in real life?
If you look at lives of true AIESECers a few years after their AIESEC

enjoy life. Their lives are more colorful and vibrant than the rest.

Stepping out of iGT, the roles that truly added colour to my story were the experiences I was
fortunate to gain through the Organizing Committees I worked in. From being an OCVP of National
Conferences and Congress Committee member of an International Conference to leading my very
own OC at LDS 2020, these experiences transformed me as a person and morphed to becoming
a better leader. Walking the streets on Bambalapitiya and Colpetty desperately trying to raise ER
partners, travelling all around Gampaha and Down South on rented vehicles in search of venues,
spending overnight weekends planning and jiving in MC Office, going on OC trips, sleepless
nights and panicking during conference days, were some of the climaxes. The challenges we
faced were paramount but this was where our passion, vision and leadership was truly tested.
The experience one can receive and lessons that could be learned through an OC experience,
especially conference OCs are unparalleled and tremendous.

24

CN INSIDER

Coupled with the functional experience and OC experiences, instilled a great sense of passion
and drive within me, which fueled me to achieve great roles such as being a Data Analyst for
the Global Support Team of 2021 and also becoming an LCVP. This is one of the greatest
traits of AIESEC’s Leadership Development Model, where we can create a support system
of ourselves and constantly as well as consistently drive to empower those around us while
developing ourselves in order to reach our full potentials. This value of “empowering others”
was one of the driving factors which later encouraged me to step forward as a candidate
for the role of LCP, as I wanted to empower 200 more people and create disruptive change-
making leaders for society.
