Leaders Leading Learning

A study by Mary Broad and John Newstrom examined the role the
manager has to play in the transfer of learning. The findings
showed that the most important role is that of the manager
before, who is key in setting expectations, ensuring commitment
and showing support and enthusiasm for the learners journey.
This is closely followed by the role of the manager after, again
highlighting the importance of supporting, challenging and
feeding back of the implementation of the new learning.

How can you support the learning?

MANAGER Before During After BEFORE AFTER
FACILITATOR • Brief the learner • Explore key learning
1 8 3 • Set expectations • Create opportunities
LEARNER 2 4 9 • Explain your input • Support implementation
7 5 6 • Role model behaviours • Monitor progress
