The ReBuild Program Brief

The ReBuild Program Brief

The ReBuild Program

Mission

The mission of ReBuild is to provide monetary support for the operating expenses and
building costs of the Fuller Center for Housing. This is accomplished through the
procurement, acquisition and resale of donated goods.

The store is marketed to the community as a retail store where you can find unique, quality
products at discounted prices. Our store benefits the community in general by providing an
alternative to purchasing at other retail outlets, and benefits lower income customers by
offering quality products for their homes at affordable prices.

The ReBuild, to be owned and operated by Fuller Center for Housing, is a retail venue that
offers building materials, appliances, and furniture for sale to the general public. Any
proceeds from sales of ReBuild products are reinvested into Fuller Center for Housing’s
mission of building homes for low income families. The ReBuild concept is particularly
attractive to building contractors, who often have small lots of timber, paint and other
building supplies when they finish a job. They can donate these to Fuller Center for Housing
ReBuild Stores rather than pay tip fees to dump them. These items can then be sold to
individuals for a lower price and the proceeds are used to support the administration of Fulle r
Center for Housing, which can then fulfil its mission of building homes for people in need.
When Fuller Center seeks donations from the public it can pledge that all donated money is
used in projects, not administration.

The ReBuild will generate funds to support Fuller Center's building programs while reducing
the amount of used materials that go to landfills. The ReBuild program accepts cans of paint,
paint accessories, timber, bricks, tiles, doors, windows, kitchens, furniture, tools and
appliances that are in good condition.

Sometimes home improvement stores, such as Masters and Bunnings can give floor models of
cabinets when they change their displays as well. Ikea could also donate floor stock and
seconds. All the material that the ReBuild takes and sells has a dual purpose: (1) helping the
environment by keeping furniture from going in the trash, and (2) making usable products
available at an affordable price. As consistency continues, ReBuild will be positioned for
tremendous growth in revenue and funding over the next five years.

The sustainable growth of ReBuild’s financial capacity is a major focus of this document. Six
main areas will need to be developed to see that need become a reality. First, we will need to
reach our target market of young adults ages 18-35. This market represents the majority
population of South East Queensland and metropolitan areas in the eastern states, and it
possesses the highest interest in the product range that we provide. We must tailor our
marketing efforts, donation procurement and store practices towards it. Second, we need to
expand our donor base. Research identifies the increase in the quality and quantity of
donations as a key factor to driving sales growth. Our focus will be to reach and retain more
donors and their donations through direct solicitations, meetings, and increased market
presence. The third approach to attaining sustainable growth is through increased quality
control; we want to develop the customers’ mindset towards that of a quality, trusted retail
outlet. Fourth, through increased product depth, ReBuild customers will be able to find a
sufficient quantity of particular items throughout the store. We will focus donation
procurement on building product depth for popular items such as major appliances, flooring
material, paint and paint accessories, and building supplies. This process will also be
supported through the fifth area to develop, which is the implementation of purchased
materials. Our customers will be able to know that certain items will always be stocked in our
store, and the higher quality and quantity of these products will raise our sales.

The last main area we will focus on is staff development. Because our most effective
advertising method is through word of mouth, ReBuild staff will participate in customer
service training in conjunction with ongoing development opportunities as they arise.

The work that volunteers engage in at ReBuild is essential to achieve Fuller Center’s main
goal of building homes from donated materials. Volunteers are drawn from the disabled
community and other disadvantaged niches who find it difficult often to even be considered
for employment. Working with ReBuild helps volunteers to rebuild their self-esteem as well
as their employment skills. The hard work, creativity, and dedication of ReBuild staff and
volunteers never goes unnoticed. The staff always makes sure everyone is having fun as well.
“We are absolutely convinced happy stores make more money and serve more families.
Happy stores provide better customer service, acquire more and better donations and have
stronger volunteer programs.”

With the help of volunteers, ReBuild’s national goal is to achieve $400.00 of donated product
sales per square metre for every ReBuild Store across the nation. This is calculated by taking
the total revenue generated by a store and subtracting the sale of purchased product. Take
that number and divide by the number of square metres in the store to get the sales per square
meter. Through this realistic goal, Fuller Center for Housing will be able to serve more
families through ReBuild’s net revenues and continue to give back to those in need.

ReBuild Plan of Action

In order for ReBuild to succeed in providing furniture and building supplies to the greater
community, while keeping a managed inventory, correct placement and marketing of these
outlets are essential. The ReBuild outlets will be located in those areas of the country with
higher levels of poverty; within a given community the outlets will be typically located in or
near low-income neighbourhoods that they wish to serve. Such deliberate placement helps
FCHQA offer resources to the population the organisation wishes to serve. This placement
also helps locate materials in areas likely to need rebuilding, which allows an easier access to
critical supplies.

Operating on donations from businesses, furniture stores, and private residents is a strong
feature that maintains a good value and wide variety for all types of customers. From
appliances to furniture, cast-iron bathtubs, jetted whirlpools and a wide selection of cabinets,
the inventory is endless and constantly turning over.

Between all these donations and customer outreach, the ReBuild program will continue to
grow but there is still a plethora of resources the ReBuild can further utilise as the marketing
plan expands.

ReBuild Guidebook

The layout of the ReBuild is to encourage customers to browse through the entire store and
view all the merchandise. In order to maximise ReBuild profit, 85% of the store must be
devoted to sales with no more than 15% of the store used for storage, offices, and bathrooms.
Research has shown that the average customer takes five steps into the store before he/she
decides whether they are going to continue to shop there, so a brightly lit atmosphere is
crucial to the success of a ReBuild. There are two main tactics that ReBuild utilises in order to
optimise the donor as well as the customer’s impression of ReBuild.

These strategies are called the “Donor Experience” and the “Shopping Experience” as they
both set guidelines on how to make the donors and customers time at ReBuild convenient
and hassle free. These strategies allow for the donors and customers to feel welcome at
ReBuild and continue coming back. Also, this makes for a good “word of mouth impression”
as this is how ReBuild gains its reputation in the community which leads to higher sales.

In the “Donor Experience” an accessible and convenient donation drop-off station is critical.
Although sending the ReBuild truck to pick up pricier items is essential, the donations that
come to ReBuild are just as valuable as there is no overhead invested in receiving the
donation. The probability that a donor will return with more donations is directly tied to the
outlet’s competence in solving that donor’s problem: getting rid of their stuff. Often these
donors will talk to the public more than any ReBuild affiliate will and having positive
feedback is vital to acquiring new donors. In the “Shopping Experience”, targeting women is
essential. Although ReBuild falls into the category of a hardware/ home improvement store,
women customers make the majority of purchases as they buy or influence the purchase of
close to 80% of consumer products. A quote commonly overheard is: “If a woman is in the
store and is on the phone with her spouse, she is asking for dimensions, but if a man is on the
phone, he is asking for permission”.
